Let's say for the sake of argument that sony choose to bow out of "consoles". That does not mean they bow out of gaming but could in essence allow them to transcend into another form of gaming.

No not the SEGA software route but actually using their assets to converge into one entertainment format. I could actually see them expand on the smart TV role by including either consolesq features but using the cloud delivery system.

So as their TV's come out newer and newer they essentially are upgrading the hardware for the gaming side as well. That isnt to say those who buy into the first gen are screwed because the games themselves are delivered via their streaming service.

So the games are effectively tailored to the set you play on. Better set comes out then the results will be improved than the previous one. Sony has an advantage that neither Nintendo or MS have.

They are a three way provider in the hardware, software and entertainment content. They hold movie and tv studios as well as different hardware divisions and software studios.

MS is predominantly a software company. You cant say they are in the hardware business when their main money maker is really the software.

Nintendo has always been about their hardware and software so they dont have any move/tv studios for non gaming content. All their stuff is through licenses and contracts. Same with MS.

If we were to go on the idea that this is sony's last generation then it would be a very narrow minded idea. They are a more flexible company than most people give them credit for.

Lol I thought the exact same thing. People don't understand a few things. For one Blu Ray disks are well established now and their costs are well down on that front. Theres new versions of the lasers that can read faster as well as read bigger disks.

Sony established a few great new IPs this gen and managed to get by with very little third party support so even if third party devs ain't on board with them at the start then they still have KZ, UC, GOW, GT, Infamous, The Last of Us and other new IPs probably in development so they can't go wrong there.

I can't believe the firing of half of Sonys PR staff has people thinking its the end of Sony lol. Yeah because PR dudes like the one that won the first tester series are very qualified PR dudes lol. Sonys done well enough with very little advertising this gen and the games releasing this holiday season for them weren't great anyway. Kids games IMO and million sellers at best.

What other product/brand/franchise does Sony have with commercial dominating potential?

Answer: Right now the only product Sony has that can dominate and put Sony in the drivers seat of importance, is the PLAYSTATION brand.

It's not TV's, because Samsung and LG and others have figured out how to make good TV's in the form of LCD's. Tube TV's are no more.
Camera's, music players, Cell phones....pretty much everything is the same way.

But the Playstation brand, while it did tumble some this generation....it's still well known, and with the right moves, it can once again be dominant, if not a commercial goldmine.

Sony's not leaving that behind....they can't afford to.

I sure hope it's not the end. Microsoft doesn't care about real gaming (kinect and no exclusives + rehashes of the same Halo/Gears model over & over); While Nintendo is for children and morons who can't see that Nintendo's heyday is over.

Now we also got Cable Company's vying for some of the gaming world too via streaming, and 3rd party company's beginning to make their own streaming services (Square Enix has already created it's own Cloud Service where u can play some of their games right now without a console system). And other 3rd party's like Sega are putting games on Cloud/Steam.

So, I hope SOny has a solid plan, and drops their TV division immediately. Kaz has always been a great businessman, and I've been following him before he was super famous, but is he willing to change the company in a way that redefines SONY (Less TV's and Camcorders, more Software, Game Hardware, consolidation of Sony Services (Sony Games division, Music Division, Movie Division, TV shows (not hardware) divisions, etc into all working together on ONE box (The PS 4))? I sure hope he does, because money is leaking out of SONY fast.

This article became the hottest topic of the day on N4G within an hour. Not bad for a small site that barely anyone had heard of.
Now, this send a pretty clear message. You want hits? Well, write a negative article on Sony and submit it here and we'll pimp it to the top. It's no wonder more and more negative articles on Sony are popping up when they become so popular easily. The ironic part is that most of the popularity is due to people that are Sony fans but choose to just comment about their frustrations rather than using the report/rating system... or better yet, just ignoring the garbage articles themselves.

As for who's been approving articles, look at the comment above by NYC_Gamer and the comment below by iamnsuperman. Do they look like they hate Sony? Well, they both approved the article. Will the PS4 be Sony's last console? I have a feeling it could be... but not in the sense that some would believe. Gaikai could be utilised to make it pointless to upgrade the consoles in the future and the PS4 could just become the hub for streamed gaming. It will get revisions (as sky boxes do) but not a completely different console. I'm not 100% certain but it's darn close to that in my opinion. SEN and PSN are where Sony are heading and that means distribution is key, not how powerful the hardware is.

There is still no evidence that the PS4 is in development, while we do have some bits of the next xbox popping up now and then. So I actually bothered to read why the author believes Sony should bow out next round and the author fails to elaborate on any of her points or offer up any points that make any sense to someone that knows anything about gaming.

For example...

One of her huge points one why this might be Sony's last gen is the continued support of the PS3 through 2015, or 2017/2018 if you asked the author. Now, I'm not a fan of logic and I hate hate hate being bothered to use it but here we go. If SCE did in fact have a plan to back out of the industry as the most successful console maker to date, why on Earth would SCE continue to support (ie. publish games, Gaikai, SOE, etc) the PS3?

Another point is the high price point, which has not been a factor for over 3 years. She (Sara Swanson, the author) claims that Sony intentionally crippled itself by offering superior hardware at higher price to run games (assuming mp games, as there are no XBox exclusives that outperform PS exclusives technically..) that are similar to what appears on Xbox. The author knows the answer to this but offered this point of evidence up for no apparent reason other than to tell us that the Xbox is on almost on par with the PS3 and that the PS3 is vastly more expensive than the Xbox.

She also brought up the firing of the PR department and how that somehow gives Nintendo's WiiU and automatic victory this holiday while largely ignoring the Xbox's presence this holiday. So were it not for Sony's lack of marketing, Sony clearly would have ran away with it this holiday despite lacking a flagship title like Halo going into this holiday.

I sincerely doubt this will be Sony's last generation. A company doesn't simply pull out the market when they have a respectable market share.

The problem Sony has had this generation has clearly be where their focus was when they were designing the PlayStation 3. Quite frankly, they focused on the hardware more than the software experience where as the Xbox 360 seemed to offer a good balance of both.

I think in Sony's next console you'll see a more concentrated approach towards software experience so they can attract more potential gamers and possible rival the service Xbox Live offer. You can see this already as Sony are already trying this approach with their Xperia smartphones; they are making it all about the user experience and the software.

Clearly Sony are in this for the long run as they are continuously trying to find alternative methods to reduce the cost of manufacturing the PS3 and just make the business on the whole more profitable.

When this generation started Sony didn't think that Online was going to be as big as it was. There was no universal friends list, no in-game messaging or private chat. You couldn't even bring up the XMB while in a game. Their next console will be built around online.

Sony also thought that people would pay an absurd price on launch just because of the Playstation name. They will have learnt from that for the next console.

They no longer have a stranglehold on the market, so they need to stop acting like they do. This generation humbled them, and they look like they're on track to building their way back up.

although I doubt it that Sony will give up their console division; you have to admit that Sony's been reporting loss from their consoles for years now ( $1+ Billion loss ever since they dropped the price to compete with the other consoles --- it fared better than their other products though). vita hasn't been selling well either.

Playstation as a brand with its own consoles might be on the way out after PS4, but Sony has already thought of this and this is why we are seeing Playstation Certified devices. By the time the PS4 will be on its way out, the Playstation brand will probably be well integrated into Sony´s laptops, which I believe by the year 2022 will have no problem running console games.

Well look at the realistic standpoint. Why would Sony sweep there marketing team? Knowing there heading into a very important year in the market. Why would Sony do such a thing?

Another question. Sony said they'll support the PS3 up until 2015 that's fantastic, but they hinted at new exclusives for the system? I find it hard to believe Sony's flagshipped titles will make an appearance on the PS3 that long in it life cycle.

So that leaves possible new Ip's for PS3? That'll be a step backwards for existing franchises and new possible franchises because the PS4 could already be out by then. So how is it gonna work then? Sony will advertise new exclusives for PS3 and for PS4? Not only will they be pouring loads and loads of money in campaigning but campaigning on both consoles is absurd when talking exclusives.

Anyone care to explain how Sony plans to pulling this off. Simultaneous released for new Ips for both PS3 and PS4 would confuse the market is a bad idea (IMO). Little to no PR team to market anything in the first place how does Sony planning on pulling any of this off?

Reason 360 was so big this gen was because of social aspects and piracy. PS3 is the better go to for exclusives and graphics but for the smoothest gaming experiences 360 wins hands down. Im a pc player myself but calling it like it is having owned all systems.
The ps3 isnt dead. It is the hardcore gaming rig imo. Sony doesnt leave fans in the dust with its move/kinect function. it still caters to the hardcore. I see sony doing even more with its tech down the line. sadly I think its time to quit consoles for myself. It is sad when you add up what you spend on games and say "We could go to brazil instead" :)
