From Halo:CE to Halo 5 - How Microsoft Secretly Annualized Halo

Pop Conflux's Joseph Rush breaks down how Microsoft turned Halo into an annual franchise without you even knowing. He also speculates that there will be a supped up version of Halo 4 on the Xbox 720 in 2013, a Halo 2: Anniversary in 2014, and Halo 5 in 2015.

why do every body calls out MS for milking their biggest game like know else does it. hell every game company has at least one game they milk, ubisoft = Assassin Cred, Activision = COD, Sony = GOW, Capcom = RE, EA = all of there sports games and need for speed, So why single out MS?

robavila954227d ago

Besides, every Halo made has noticable improvements from the last iteration, unlike other franchises like COD, which is full-on milking.

EVILDEAD3604227d ago

When keeping it fankiddie goes wrong..

You could EASILY point out MANY franchises that Halo doesnt even come close to matching it terms of releases, but it's not even worth it.

This guy is so desperate that he's counting ports from last gen on the PC as annualized releases.

You could easily destroy the premise of the article, but what does it matter.

At the heart, it's another troll, mad because millions of Halo fans are going to be in Halo heaven with a brand new Master Chief trilogy.

kratos174227d ago

i wouldnt call halo or GOW milked, but all the others you mentioned are pretty much spot on.

Shadonic4227d ago

idk about assassins creed mostely the 2 ezio centric sequals to 2 were to explain some plot points and to keep it relevent from what ubisoft said.

zebramocha4227d ago (Edited 4227d ago )

Sony gets excuse because the supposed "milked" games doesn't stop them from investing in new ip's.

ALLWRONG4227d ago

Supposed milked?

So SOCOM 18 and Ratchet and Clank 16 are a myth?

zebramocha4227d ago

Oh yeah, ratchet & clank slipped my mind, there was only two socoms on the ps3 and rest were on the psp( different platform ),like I said this doesn't stop them from investing in new ip's.

srcBFMVBMTH4227d ago (Edited 4227d ago )

@ALLWRONG

Well zebramocha does have a point. Socom only has like 2 releases on PS3.

And for every Ratchet & Clank game released this gen on PS3. Sony creates or publishes like 3 new IP's. If Microsoft invested as much as Sony has on new IP's. Then "milking" Halo wouldn't seem as bad now would it? The thing is, they don't.

whoyouwit044227d ago

well if thats the case then microsoft gets a bigger exscuse, why true sony has been launching new ips they have been laying off staff and closeing studios, And Microsoft, well lets see
they have been buying and opening new studios world wide make sure they can deliver the finale blow to sony. and there is no supposed milked, mliked is milked you sony fans just can't admit that sony does it.

DiRtY4227d ago

Well to be fair:

Motorstorm [PS3]
Motorstorm: Pacific Rift [PS3]
Motorstorm: Apocalypse [PS3]
Motorstorm: 3D Rift [PS3]
Motorstorm: Complete [PS3]
Motorstorm: Arctic Edge [PSP]
Motorstorm: RC [Vita]

Uncharted [PS3]
Uncharted 2 [PS3]
Uncharted 3 [PS3]
Uncharted GA [PSV]

Resistance [PS3]
Resistance 2 [PS3]
Resistance 3 [PS3]
Resistance Burning Skies [PSV]
Resistance Retribution [PSP]

MLB The Show is too much to list.

MS did a good job with Halo on the 360. They offered quite a few games and every title was critically acclaimed and sold well. Fans never felt like "oh I have enough now." Look at the hype Halo 4 is building right now.

ALLWRONG4227d ago

You forgot Uncharted.

LOL they wont be back now that they been owned. They will just try again on the next Halo news.

srcBFMVBMTH4227d ago (Edited 4227d ago )

@DiRtY

Considering those titles are all new IP's created THIS gen. I don't see your point LMAO.

MotorStorm, Uncharted, and Resistance were all created this gen. They've also got many more new IP's then just those. lol

@whoyouwit04

"hy true sony has been launching new ips they have been laying off staff and closeing studios,"

They closed BigBig (Very small studio), Zipper(They've been making meh to crap games and have completely ignored their fanbase this entire gen, they practically put themselves out of business), and Liverpool (Not really closed, they merged with Evolution). Recently, they've bought Sucker Punch, Media Molecule, Gaikai, created SuperBot Entertainment and have expanded Naughty Dog and Sony Santa Monica into multiple teams. I don't see your point either. Those 10,000 job cuts went to the T.V. branch bro. Had nothing to do with the gaming division.

"And Microsoft, well lets see
they have been buying and opening new studios world wide"

It would be helpful if....... you know, they actually made quality games and not just Kinect garbage.

@ALLWRONG

"LOL they wont be back now that they been owned. They will just try again on the next Halo news."

Don't think anybody has been owned here dude. While Sony may milk games, they have a plethora of new IP's to make up for it.

Sony milks games AND create new IP's.

Microsoft just milks games.

ALLWRONG4227d ago (Edited 4227d ago )

That's your excuse? They are new IP's so they don't qualify as milked? Out of the big 3 MS milks the least. Did you know there are like 30 Singstar games?

You lost this argument before you even began. I give you credit for coming back though, you failed, but you did come back.

DiRtY4227d ago

@srcBFMVBMTH

Wait, so it is okay to milk a franchise as long as the franchise is from this gen, but it is just wrong if the franchise is a couple of years older? Awesome logic.

So if there will be Uncharted 4 on PS4, this is a bad thing...

You really like to spin things, don't you?

srcBFMVBMTH4227d ago (Edited 4227d ago )

@ALLWRONG

"That's your excuse? They are new IP's so they don't qualify as milked?"

I never said they don't qualify. Lol. Can you read? Yes Sony DOES milk games. But that's not all they do. They create new IP's as well. How is that so hard to understand? LMAO. They've created A LOT more than just Uncharted, Resistance, and MotorStorm this gen.

"You lost this argument before you even began."

You covering your ears and stomping your feet doesn't make me wrong bro.
Like I said.
Sony milks games AND creates new IP's.
Microsoft just milks games.

@DiRtY

"Wait, so it is okay to milk a franchise as long as the franchise is from this gen,

What I'm saying is, when you start a new gen. And you create a new IP. It's fine if you milk it. But be sure to create SOMETHING ELSE and KEEP THE NEW IP'S COMING to keep the gen fresh. (That's something Sony has definitely done this gen, there is no denying that) But if those 2 or 3 IP's are all you rely on, (Halo, Gears, and Forza in Microsoft's case) whether it was a couple of years old, or just started this gen. Then that's pretty pathetic.

"So if there will be Uncharted 4 on PS4, this is a bad thing... "

Just like how Halo 2 Anniversary, Halo 5, and Halo 6 will be on 720. Difference is, Naughty Dog have taken a break. They've moved onto The Last Of Us. Like in an earlier article, PD have taken breaks and created new IP's as well (Omega Blast and Tourist Trophy). Sony Santa Monica? Don't even get me started lmao. They've got their fingers in so many pies, I have no idea how they find time to make a new God Of War. Media Molecule? Working on Tearaway and another Vita game. Sucker Punch? Just finished Infamous 2 and is making a new IP or Infamous 3. Guerilla Games? Working on a new IP and a Killzone Vita.

Like what I said to ALLWRONG
Sony milks games AND creates new IP's
Microsoft just milks games.

Lvl_up_gamer4227d ago (Edited 4227d ago )

@ srcBFMVBMTH

So MS didn't create:

The Gunstringer
Kinect Adventures
Kinect Disneyland Adventures
Kinect Joy Ride
Kinect Nat Geo TV
Kinect Rush: A Disney-Pixar Adventure
Kinect Sesame Street TV
Kinect Sports
Kinect Sports: Season Two
Kinect Star Wars
Kinectimals

So these games don't count because they are Kinect? That's a pretty narrow minded view. These are ALL new IP's to support a new peripheral developed by Microsoft Studios.

Should we then throw out Sorcery and Wonderbook as "NEW" IP's from Sony?

Your argument that ONLY Sony milks IP's and creates new ones is completely FALSE. MS ALSO milks IP's AND creates new ones. Just because YOU wouldn't buy them doesn't mean that they still don't exist.

Why wouldn't MS milk a franchise that people love? Just like why wouldn't Sony Milk a franchise that people love? I want more Halo and Uncharted. I want more Gears and Killzones.

Sony and MS BETTER milk these franchises because I like them and will keep buying them until they become boring to me. Until then, I can't wait for Halo 4-6.

I wasn't fond of Heavy Rain so am I happy that Sony made a new IP...Nope. Just because it's new doesn't mean it's good. But if it's being milked...then it's obvious there is a market for it because people are willing to keep paying for it simply due to it's fun appeal.

Author of the article here.

I honestly think that people DO call out the other companies disproportionally more than Microsoft. Fans tend to forget that Microsoft has done this with Halo when they get on their high horses to criticize other companies. And the way Microsoft has gone about it is unlike other companies.

With Ubisoft or Activision, you expect that there's going to be an Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty each year; they've already stated as much, but with Halo, Microsoft has pretended like every new release is the first one in years.

By the way, I'm a huuuge Halo fan, having bought every single release that's on that list. I'm guilty of making this business model work for Microsoft, but I still would like them to take a break and let the anticipation build and make each new Halo a special event, not an annual slog.

dragonrage004227d ago

Theres nothing wrong with releasing a game per year if they can polish it and make noticeble improvements. Take the prince of persia franchise last gen, they were annual releases but vastly different. The problem is releasing the same game every year. Gaming is a business. COD sells like water every year, so they release the same game cuz they know it will sell anyway. If you dont want ODSTs and anniversaries in the future, just dont buy them. Thats the downside of very popular franchises.

EVILDEAD3604227d ago (Edited 4227d ago )

'With Ubisoft or Activision, you expect that there's going to be an Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty each year; they've already stated as much, but with Halo, Microsoft has pretended like every new release is the first one in years.'

FAIL..Show us ONE link where Micrsoft pretend ANY Halo that has been released this gen was the 'first' one in years.

They promote every Halo as a big event, because it is. If you REALLY were an actual 'HUGE' Halo fan which I am then you would know they are to HALO fans.

They promote and give details on each Halo project as it comes. Nothing more nothing less and no different than anyone else.

See you are pretending there are 'secrets' when MS came out and said that htey'd like to see Halo release more frequently that every 3 years.

'Real' Halo fans know the differences between Ports, Map Packs, side projects from Ensemble & Bungie, HD reworkings 10 years later AND the true Halo major releases that take 3 years to make.

Halo 4 will be in development for 3 yeas and has 100-person dream team assembled to kick off the second trilogy.

People hate on Call of Duty for it's annual release seven more than Halo, but I guarantee the overwhelming majority of that criticism is not from 'HUGE' Call of Duty fans.

See the real hardcore Halo fans and COD fans will make up the huge crowds at each of the midight releases.

November is going to be an amazing month for gamers..can't wait for H4

I like how everybody calls down microsoft and sony for milking game franchises, but for some reason, nobody says jack-diddly-squat about nintendo living mostly off of mario and zelda for the last 20 years....

I would have said something, but the thing is, each new game is marked with really great additions and improvements. Take Halo 4, for example. Graphics have undergone quite a change for the better (the lighting is just phenomenal), there's an entirely new cast of enemies worked ground-up to behave in their own unique ways not yet seen in the Halo universe, there's Spartan Ops (we'll be getting 40 free missions with cutscenes after the game launches), Dominion looks like Halo turret defense or Halo Wars in Halo 4, Forge has undergone quite a tremendous improvement, and the Infection Mode is still under-wraps.

I'd say that keeps Halo out of the "milking" arena.

m234227d ago

Oh man, I didn't even realize Dominion as Halo Wars.......you just blew my mind.

GrahamGolden4227d ago

you forgot the metroid wannabe part
but i get it ms fans just cant accept ripoffs its ok have fun with halo for a month then it will be forgoten

aviator1894227d ago (Edited 4227d ago )

What are you talking about??

Halo 4 definitely has metroid elements, from some music compositions to the aesthetics of a few level designs. Surely you can't justify labeling Halo 4 as a ripoff of Metroid purely for such small elements??

To add further, the Halo community is wide and active throughout any Halo game's life. There are forging competitions, tons of unique custom games modes that people create to show to their friends, screenshots and machinima videos are constantly and painstakingly developed for the world to see, and there is a heck of ton of content in the game to keep almost any fan busy for years.

Heck, I still join up with friends to play Hal 3 infection in custom games and mess around in Forge. Just because Halo 4 is borrowing some elements from Metroid doesn't mean you can easily ignore all of the innovation and content that Halo itself gives to the fans.

Summons754227d ago

There may be a Halo every year but 343 and before that Bungie said that Halo now and will always have a 3 year minimum dev cycle. Unlike call of duty where they have maybe a year in a half but 6 months to make map packs.

bubblebeam4224d ago

It is complicated. Yes, there has been a yearly release since 2009, but I can explain.

2009: ODST, halo Wars. One was an expansion (ODST) made by a smaller team from bungie, while the big team was working on Reach. Halo wars was in development for about 3 years, by a DIFFERENT studio.

2010: Halo Reach. Had a 2 year minumum dev cycle, possibly 3 (Don't know how long it took for the main Halo 3 team to start work.

2011: Anniversary. Fans wanted it, they loved it. Wasn't a new game, wasn't milking.

2012: HALO 4. 3 year minimum dev cycle. Different studio again. Not milking, looks to be setting a new industry standard (Spartan ops episodic weekly release...FREE with the game).

While technically there has been a yearly release, it has been shared by different devs, and each have been high quality with 3 year dev cycles. If that is milking, than I hope to hell it is milked even more.

Peace out, see you star-side on November 6th ;)

TekoIie4227d ago (Edited 4227d ago )

Even though when we look at the games released annually they are all pretty different...

Halo wars brought the franchise to the RTS genre and did an amazing job of it for a console. Halo ODST was a Sandbox halo game with a really good SP for Co-op but it doesnt quite stack up to other halo games. (Also first time playing as a normal human).

These 2 ^^ were both released in the 2009 but are OBVIOUSLY different and so its hardly fair to count milking as "pushing a franchise into a new genre".

Next was Reach (2010) which was a TRUE Halo game so if you count the gap between 3 and Reach it was 3 years. Also If you play H3 and Reach they are very different.

In 2011 Halo: CEA released and so if MS making ONE remake is milking compared to Sony (which is perfectly fine apparently) then i think we need to cut down on the double standards.

So now we're in 2012 we have the next true Halo game. So its taken them 5 years to release a sequel which is longer than most devs wait.

If Halo is being milked then so are many other franchises. Can i also point out that Halo 4 is the first fully fledge halo game w/MP to not have a beta? If you want you can say its milked but effort is clearly put into each and every instalment.

bubblebeam4224d ago

Bubbles for intelligent. I saw your post after my one above, we said pretty much he same thing.

I don't care if people complain about the trend continuing if a Halo 2 remake comes out next year, because I'd love to see it remade.

FarCryLover1824227d ago

I wouldn't call it a secret. I bought ODST in 2009, Reach in 2010, CEA in 2011, now Halo 4 in 2012. I expect there to be an "ODST like" Halo 4 expansion next fall to expand on the multiplayer and a new campaign from someone else's perspective.

bubblebeam4224d ago

Ain't gonna happen. ODST was only made because Bungie had a contract with Microsoft saying they had to make 2 more games. So while a big chunk of the Halo 3 team went on to make halo reach, a smaller team made ODST.

Both high quality games, and with Bungie fulfilling their contract, they were able to go Multiplat.

The yearly release is easily explained by the above post by "Pekolie". Not the same as the Assassins creed or Call of duty cycle.

FarCryLover1824224d ago

This may, in fact be true, but I think some form of a Halo title will be released in 2013. Whatever that may be.
