The Lawless Retrospective: Killzone

With the HD trilogy edition of Killzone set to release next month, OnlySP takes a look at the each entry in the series to gauge whether it might be a worthwhile purchase for anyone that hasn't played them all before.

Cajun Chicken4232d ago

I found the third game excellent, finally found that balance of fun.

shutUpAndTakeMyMoney4231d ago

Best looking console shooter I have ever seen! Kz4 on ps4? mind blowing..

LOGICWINS4231d ago (Edited 4231d ago )

Considering that KZ3 sold less than KZ2 during the same time period, we'd be lucky if KZ4 came out for ANY PS console, much less the PS4. A PS3 release would make more sense since it would be less of a risk for Sony if the game tanks.

KZ2 took $40-50 million to make on the PS3. Imagine how much KZ4 on the PS4 would take to make. You think Sony will risk that much money on a franchise with a dwindling community?

I'd rather GG continue to develop for a console that they have six years of experience with as opposed to a rush job which sets KZ4 as a PS4 launch title...just for the sake of having a well known shooter as a launch title.

Outside_ofthe_Box4231d ago (Edited 4231d ago )

Killzone 3 is a joke compared to KZ2 in my opinion. There is a reason why GG fired the lead MP designer for KZ3 and brought back the lead MP designer from KZ2. KZ3 wasn't balanced at all unless you consider a supposed sniper class(which apparently is able to wield an ASSAULT RILE of all weapons) being undetectable by radar AND eye sight as balanced.

KZ3 was a wreck due to all the CoD players complaining about KZ2's realistic weighty controls, not being able to read server lists, and how the game is too 'hardcore' lol. Now GG 'dumbed-down' KZ3 and all the complainers didn't even buy the game. Hell, I knew I wouldn't like the game and I still bought it and that's something I never do. It really shows who Developers should really be listening to.

I really hope KZ4 goes back to the roots of KILLZONE.

LOGICWINS4231d ago

I'd argue that the single player in KZ3 was MUCH better than KZ2's.

And although KZ2 had a better overall MP experience with skill based gameplay and deep clan support, KZ3 introduced some nice ideas like brutal melees and the use of mechs.

rezzah4231d ago

I agree with logic on this point.

KZ2 great SP and MP

KZ3 Better SP worst MP

Knight_Crawler4231d ago (Edited 4231d ago )

Killzone is a great franchise but this argument right here proves my point that KZ3 split up the KZ community.

Thats the reason why KZ will never get the recognition it deserves because the developers are always trying to please everyone and change things up for the worst.

As much as people bag on Halo for being the same year after year, you got to give Halo credit for maintaining a balance of happiness in the community and Halo 4 looks like its following tradition because Halo fans are happy.

Killzone is great and if the developers would just keep there ground and not fold to fans complaints it can become huge.

Before you disagree, I was not saying that Halo is better than KZ...I was just saying that KZ needs to stick to one formula instead of changing it after every game.

Outside_ofthe_Box4231d ago (Edited 4231d ago )

I bought KZ3 for the SP, the only reason why I'd buy a game I know don't like based off the beta.

I enjoyed KZ3's sp more, but it was too easy. I was able to beat the game in 5 hours on the veteran difficulty.

What i don't like about brutal melee is that it's one hit kill. Now we have people running through bullets to instant kill melee people and surprise close encounters ends up being a "who can press the melee button first" scenario. I'd rather brutal melee require two hits to activate if the opponent has 100% health. Only time I think brutal melee should be a one hit kill is if you do it from behind or your opponent is under 50-60% health.

I've always wondered why mechs weren't used in KZ2, but now I know why. It kills the balance. I don't mind exos and jets packs being in the games. It's just that they just have to make it balanced which is extremely difficult to do. I don't really have my own solution on how to balance them out. I'd rather GG make a new objective that requires the uses of exos and jets to complete and they are only available during that specific objective. That's the only way I can see mechs not killing the balance of the game entirely.

Edit

@ Knight_Crawler

Actually agree with you some what in regards to Halo. Halo 3 is actually the second most balanced game this gen behind KZ2 in my opinion. Balanced games are hard to come by these days.

although i liked part 3 as well, killzone 3 removed alot of things that made kz2 so great. thanks to all the requests from the gamers who played killzone 2, and judging by the sales of kz3, never came back for part 3. a shame really

vividi4231d ago

I love killzone series, part 2 is my favorite but I also love part 3, waiting for killzone HD

Eyeco4231d ago

I'll give my honest unbiased assessment of the Killzone series.

Killzone 1- decent game held back because of the PS2 hardware, and overwhelming hype

Killzone 2- A solid shooter, was blown away by the visuals when I saw it, never saw anything like it, Multiplayer was great to had allot of fun with it.
The Problem is the game didnt really go as far as it needed to be a classic shooter. Also the game didn't know whether it was an arcade shooter or a tactical shooter, it shoudld have opted for the latter.

Killzone 3- A big dissapointment in my opinion a game with zero ambition, it tried to be like COD , fair enough but why didnt it go all the way, why do COD games offer more features modes and maps, why include 3d and move support a feature most ps3 owners don't have yet not include a much needed feature like online co-op ? wtf if anyone wants to no more about why i dislike this game PM me i'll write you a book.

Overall the Killzone franchise is a decent yet forgettable gaming series , Killzone 2 was the shining star but this is mainly due to the MASSIVE support that game received with a budget of 45 million dollars its one of the most expensive games ever made. I personally think the problem is with the developer, if not for the gargantuan support received by sony's gaming division, the series would have been swept in to obscurity, yes imo GG is an overrated dev.

MySwordIsHeavenly4231d ago

It tried to be like Call of Duty?

Really?

No.

The 3D and Move features were excellent, by the way.

Eyeco4231d ago

yes it did try to be like COD everything from the controls to the story campaign remember the Stealth missions doesn't that remind you of the missions in COD when you would follow Captain price ? it was a laughably shameless clone.

And about the Move and 3D options, i NEVER said they were bad i just said it was stupid to include them if MOST PS3 owners don't have them yet exclude something like online co-op something that the game was screaming for. How can anyone argue against that ? i mean split screen co-op is all they could give us in 2011 thats pathetic. Killzone 3 was a barebone package in the FPS department.

Killzone 3 was a completley forgettable shooter, that only gets mention because of delusional single minded fanboys.

fOrlOnhOpe574231d ago

Im expecting great things from :this HD upgrade. Killzone 1 had a good story, characters and weapon sounds and reload animations.
Along with the bots in Battlefields, I think that any Kz fan who hasn't yet played it is in for a pleasant suprise.

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro47d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv7247d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_47d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Cacabunga47d ago

Killzone 2+3
Sly Thieves in Time
Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm
Modnation racer
Infamous 1+2

Profchaos47d ago (Edited 47d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt2347d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball200048d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin48d ago

The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer

InUrFoxHole48d ago

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix48d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel198947d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor48d ago (Edited 48d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱

Killzone wasn’t a Halo killer, but a PS5 remake could come close

The first Killzone game never met lofty expectations of dethroning Xbox’s Halo, but if any game needs a PS5 remake, this is the one.

Vits97d ago

I like Halo, but I don't think there is any need for a 'Halo Killer' at this point. If anything, the franchise is slowly undermining itself by making some of the dumbest mistakes possible. Infinite has finally reached a good point in terms of multiplayer, but it took an extra 2 years to get there. Meanwhile, the single-player experience is fine but rather mediocre when compared to the franchise peak.

That said, I would like to see the Killzone franchise back, if anything, to offer more variety to the PS5 exclusive catalog.

_SilverHawk_97d ago

sony should remaster all killzone games and bring back killzone multiplayer that is very similar to the style of killzone 2 multiplayer.

Cacabunga97d ago

Halo killed itself after Halo Reach.
Killzone went a little down in quality with SF on PS4 and I wish they kept them coming..

InUrFoxHole97d ago

??? Halo is doing great right now. I wouldn't mind seeing a kz2 mp rebirth

Cacabunga97d ago

Spawn grenade tactician class my favorite..

darthv7297d ago

I'd love a killzone trilogy, fully remastered on a single disc like they did with Uncharted. Maybe they could make it the full killzone saga including PSP and Vita games converted to console.

REDGUM97d ago

Yes please. Put me down for a copy, price irrelevant too. Loved allow those games in the franchise :)

Chocoburger97d ago

I've never liked the idea of a 'franchise killer', why can't both thrive, without one killing off the other? Its such a childish mentality.

That being said, if there ever was a true 'Halo killer', then it would have to be 343 Studios, and the Xbox division. They're doing a fine job killing off their own IP, apparently.

Profchaos97d ago

Cause console wars mostly drove the halo v killzone thing

Eonjay97d ago

And media co.panies like IGN drove the console wars for clicks.

Profchaos97d ago

@eonjay
Yeah and I still cringe super hard when IGN runs their next gen console watch segment 3 years into the consoles lifecycle we are approaching midgen likely by December and they are out there milking clicks like it's mid 2020 and were starved for information

ModsDoBetter97d ago

Halo doesn't need to be killed, they've done that themselves. It's a shell of its former self.

Zeref97d ago

And yet Halo is still here. Where is Killzone? Resistance? Haze? All the supposed "Halo Killers" are dead franchises 😂

DarXyde97d ago (Edited 97d ago )

"Dead" really isn't the right word for any of these franchises (except Haze). You're also calling these games dead for different reasons. oIMyersIo is saying a Halo is dead because it is not what it used to be and is saying it has gotten much worse. You are saying those franchises faded into obscurity and no one cares. I also find it funny that your first reaction is to name PlayStation franchises because you perceived their comment as a slight against Xbox. I hope you're at the very least part of their ambassador program...

Anyone that sees Killzone as dead is pretty myopic. A decade since their last Killzone, but they themselves have developed two full games since Shadow Fall. That's not many in context at all.

Resistance is a bit less clear. Insomniac is pretty tied up at the moment. Including all of their games on all platforms and ignoring Spider-Man Remastered, we're looking at 23 games since Resistance 3. That's alarmingly prolific and still no R4. My guess? In the modern era, a new Resistance is probably going to have to be a live service and Insomniac is not that studio.

I don't think it's dead though. Not at all.

Gaming4Life198197d ago

Halo infinite is still the best exclusive fps and is doing great but you think it's dead lol. Its also one of the top fps games out here so i dont get where your coming from. Just because you don't play it does not mean it's dead or dying.

I liked killzone 1 & 2 and I think Sony should bring it back along with resistance cause they are in need of more variety in their first party lineup. Sony & MS are sitting on some great franchises that need a revival.

ModsDoBetter97d ago

"Just because you don't play it"

And there your argument was derailed.
Through making such an assumption, you have only served to show that your response is that of a fanboy and any criticism of your beloved franchises is met with speculation in order to downplay any counter argument.

As a matter of fact, as many in team blue on this site will tell you, I often do defend Xbox just as much as I defend PS, so for you to make such a silly comment is laughable.

I have played plenty of Halo: Infinite - on Series S, Series X and PC via Steam. To say the game comes anywhere near the franchise greats such as Combat Evolved and Halo 2 is delusional. The franchise is a shell of its former self and that is a FACT.

It absolutely isn't the best fps exclusive but at this point we're arguing over preferences which is pointlessly subjective.

Where I do agree is that a Resistance comeback would be great for Sony.

DrDoomer97d ago

I'd take Killzone and Resistance over Halo any day.

Curious to know more about these "plans". I assume many will be expansions (dlc) while they will at some point release a full horizon 3 or maybe even 4.

shinoff2183287d ago

Wasn't there word about a show to at some point I thought I remembered seeing something. 16 is a pretty high number lol. I like the series though , I liked it the most of what Sony brought new on ps4.

Vengeance1138287d ago

Yes, a TV show is in development at Netflix.

S2Killinit287d ago

Netflix or amazon. One of the two.

EvertonFC287d ago

So looking FWD to 3 and see where it takes us

Adrian_v01287d ago

After Forbidden West I'm so fatigued by Aloy I don't need any more sequels tbh.

Ashunderfire86287d ago

Different character in the story perhaps.

Slappy McGee287d ago

It's kind of difficult with the way they have the game set up. Everything is built around her being "the one" and the savior of humanity. They definitely Mary Sued the series into a corner. Unless they come out with the co-op robot hunter game based in their Horizon world that was talked about then there could have somewhere else to go with the series but even then everyone would have to ignore the world dying around them to make it work.

Abear21287d ago

Exploring the detailed biomes was my fav part of the game, especially gliding and (later on) flying, and underwater was amazing too. I’ll explore another open world from GG day one.

Popsicle286d ago (Edited 286d ago )

Agreed. I enjoyed Aloy in Zero Dawn, but the personality she has taken on after becoming “the savior” is in my personal opinion unlikable and unrelatable.

Here's what I'm ready for: play as a rough dude in the Horizon universe. Less flowery dialog, more Just Cause blowing things up?
Would be a nice change of pace imo

ChasterMies287d ago (Edited 287d ago )

Your “rough dude” game is “Horizon Call of the Mountain on PSVR2”. Great game. A “rough dude” protagonist like the Doom Slayer wouldn’t work for a main Horizon game because the overall story requires the protagonist to be an outside thinker, cerebral, and empathetic enough to build a coalition of allies. It would be like putting Doom Slayer in “Raiders of the Lost Ark. Sure, he’d kill a lot of Nazis, but he would never find the Ark or save anyone.

crazyCoconuts287d ago

I mean, there can be multiple stories in a universe like Horizon. You could put doom slayer in a parallel story involving a horde of corrupted machines led by a mad man as an example.

syrupywaffles287d ago

No thanks. Go play Just Cause for that. Horizon isn't about mindless, blow stuff up, action. The story, dialog and characters of this world are what make it special and Aloy is a fantastic protagonist. Coupled with that, you already have awesome gameplay in fighting amazingly designed robotic enemies (the human enemies, however, need some work). It's perfect the way it is and as long as they keep evolving on their current path, then it'll be wonderful.

Noskypeno286d ago

I would like a fps prequel set before the machines took over.

crazyCoconuts286d ago

Yes! Perfect... With modern weaponry... Great idea!

I love this franchise but Jesus...take a chill pill

Look what happened to Killzone, they got success and it was Killzone, Killzone, Killzone, Killzone, Killzone until eventually the quality slowly dropped, it started to become samey and we just got so fatigued by the Killzone Universe that most lost any excitement for it.

I'd rather they take a break, work on a new IP, get some new ideas going with that game and then when the PS6 comes around as a launch game do Horizon III with all the new fresh ideas you've learnt from the last new IP

Kurt Russell287d ago

I wouldn't mind a new Killzone universe game come of think of it... I'd like to see Playstation create at least 1 FPS this gen.

Vengeance1138287d ago

2 Games in 5 years needs a chill pill? We really haven't gotten all that much for the series. Perhaps you just read too many Horizon articles.

JEECE287d ago

It is crazy how people constantly complain about how games were better and less rushed 10-20 years ago, ignoring the fact that we often used to get sequels to games every two years or so. Now you get a sequel 4-7 years after a game launched and people start screaming about franchise fatigue and how the devs are driving the series into the ground.

-Foxtrot287d ago (Edited 287d ago )

VR game, TV show in the works, the bird game, Horizon III coming, the multiplayer game, they are talking about other things

Come on…this is just the start

Vengeance1138287d ago

@ Foxtrot
"VR game, TV show in the works, the bird game, Horizon III coming, the multiplayer game, they are talking about other things "

Because all those things are coming out this year? What on earth is the bird game? Horizon 3 and the Live service game are many many years away like 2025 or later and the TV show you simply don't have to watch if you don't want to. There are many other franchises that need a bigger chill pill than Horizon. Call of Duty and Assassins Creed being the top 2.

Ashunderfire86287d ago

Horizon 3 will come out on PS5.

FinalFantasyFanatic287d ago

This, don't give people franchise fatigue, I love the games, but if they just keep hammering out more HZD, people are going to get sick of it. I would be up for a Netflix series though as long as it's good, and a new game in a few years would be fine with me.

zaanan287d ago

While this may be true, I thought the death of Killzone was more due their failure to stick to what worked. KZ2 was the best Killzone, but they completely scrapped the feel of that with KZ3, which tried to be a COD clone.

andy85286d ago

You really can't win sometimes though. If a series takes ages between installments people complain this is 2 in 5 years, I don't consider that bad. We got GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas within 3 years, I don't remember anyone complaining then

-Foxtrot286d ago

Development times back then compared to now are completely different

You could wait years for a sequel but there still might not e that many improvements that REALLY sets it apart

Forbidden West was pushing it, it had a few new things but by the end of the game it didn’t really have enough to really set it apart from the first game in terms of features (not graphics, visuals etc).

If we get a third game even if it takes 4 years I don’t know what else they could add in that games setting. They are better off doing a new IP for now and keep the sequel for later.
