Metal Gear Rising takes place in 2018, Sunny returns

In the Metal Gear Rising Revengeance flyer that was being distributed at TGS, are a few characters listed. One of them is still a silhouette, but the name below it reads 'Sunny'. This seems to confirm the appearance of the character in the game.

Eamon4224d ago (Edited 4224d ago )

To be very honest, I think Solid Snake is finished.

Basically, Hideo Kojima wanted to finish Solid Snake's story in MGS4 which he technically did. Snake finally achieved his own peace and will live the remaining time he has left in harmony.

All the MGS games after MGS4 that have come out or are in development have been about Big Boss.
- Peace Walker
- Ground Zeroes

I think MGS5 will also be about Big Boss and VERY LIKELY be the final Metal Gear Solid game. To finish the story of Big Boss and how he created Outer Heaven.

Ground Zeroes and MGS5 will most likely concentrate on the conflict between MSF and Cipher/The Partiots.

"From 'FOX' two phantoms were born"
Refers to MSF and Cipher or Snake and Zero.

WeskerChildReborned4224d ago

I was thinking what if Solid Snake was cloned like Big Boss.

BiggCMan4224d ago

Spoilers for anyone who has not played MGS4 yet (also, slap yourself if you haven't)

Solid Snake was, due of the events at the end of MGS4, no longer at risk of dying inside 3 to 6 months or becoming a biological weapon. He said at the end of the credits with Otacon that he will live peacefully for the rest of his life, and LONG ENOUGH to see what the new future has in store for the world, the one everyone helped create in MGS4. So going by that, I think the author of this article had forgotten that, and it can still mean he is alive.

Wouldn't matter because this isn't canon. It's just a spinoff. Anything that happens in this won't be looked at when they make Metal Gear SOLID sequels & prequels.

jc485734225d ago

spinoff, but how is it not canon? So are you saying Raiden is not really Raiden? Sunny is not Sunny? Sidestory is a sidestory, unless you are confusing spinoff with re-imagining.

Carl_Shocker4225d ago

@jc48573

I think what he's trying to say anything PAST MGS4 that isn't MGS5 but rather a spin off like Rising will NOT be cannon to the series so they could have Raiden get killed off at the end of this game for example yet he could return in MGS5 or another future main title MGS game because it wouldn't be considered cannon.

Kenshin_BATT0USAI4225d ago

@JC

It's not canon in the sense that this game has no application to the real storyline. I.e. it's as if the game never existed in the timeline.

Irishguy954225d ago

No Jc, it ain't cannon. Doesn't actually happen in the MG universe, if MGS5 is set in 2022, there will be no mention of Rising's events because they didn't happen. OR, they are actually cannon and Kojima will build around it. Who knows

Blacktric4225d ago (Edited 4225d ago )

"So are you saying Raiden is not really Raiden? Sunny is not Sunny? Sidestory is a sidestory, unless you are confusing spinoff with re-imagining."

Pffff... First of all, stop pulling descriptions out of your ass. Spin off doesn't necessarily mean that it'll be canon and they usually aren't considered canon storylines to the main plot (much like how the new Dead Rising 2 game that featured Frank West is which is a complete spin-off). And although Hideo Kojima is the executive producer of Rising, he never EVER counted anything besides the main games he made as canon. To this date the canon Metal Gear games are; Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, Metal Gear Solid 4, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.

Slugg3r4225d ago (Edited 4225d ago )

When will the people just accept it, Revengeance is canon, it might be a spinoff, but it still really takes pkace in the series' timeline. There is a interview with Atsushi Inaba and Yuji Korekado in youtube confirming Revengeances canonity but I can't be bothered to look it up since I'm browsing with my phone.
At Blacktric: You just confirmed yourself that there are Metal Gears in the canon not made by Kojima. Kojima didn't make Portable Ops still it is cosidered canon.
And finally to irishguy95: If MGS5 would be set in 2022, story of Revengeances would be propably just briefly mentioned in it like PO was in PW, it still having happened in the timeline.

under taker 344225d ago (Edited 4225d ago )

MGS5 won't be a sequel to 4, it's going to be part of the BIG BOSS saga, and Ground zeros will lead up to it, google it.

maybe we'll see the birth of liquid and solid and the end to big boss in MGS5. (unless that's already going to be covered in ground zeros, and no the boy in the trailer isn't either of them so we know that much so far.)

R_A_LEE204225d ago

@ under taker 34

You must have miss read the timeline, Snake and Liquid were born in 1972, Peace Walker takes place in 1974, Ground Zeroes takes place probably in 1976+ given by the look of the aging Big Boss and the mention of Chico and Paz.

Big Boss never talks about his children in PW so it's likely that he ether didn't know or was to disgusted by it to mention.

4224d ago
PirateThom4224d ago

This will be as canon as Portable Ops where Kojima basically ignores it in Peace Walker.

While I'm sure it will tie to the story after MGS4, the GBC game ties into the events after the original Metal Gear as alternative history, same with Snake's Revenge and Ac!d. They serve as alternative histories, not part of the cannon.

Nothing can come after MGS4 simply because it ended there, that's where the story ends, anything else can't tie to that story cannonically because it doesn't make sense. MGS4 basically ends with complete resolution for the characters and Snake dies shortly after.

Blacktric4224d ago (Edited 4224d ago )

"Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (メタルギアソリッド ポータブルオプス Metaru Gia Soriddo Pōtaburu Opusu?, officially abbreviated to MPO) is a stealth game directed by Masahiro Yamamoto and written by Gakuto Mikumo, with series creator Hideo Kojima acting as a producer."

What were you saying about Kojima not making Portable Ops? Jesus you people are really that desperate aren't you?

Slugg3r4224d ago

@Pirate Thom
Snake's revengeance is NOT canon, Ac!ds AREN'T canon but the Portable Ops IS canon. Also Revengeance IS canon and it ain't any alternative 'what if' story everything happening it is confirmed to actually take place. MGS4 ended Solid Snake's story, the world was freed from the Patriots but it was clearly presented that the sudden dissappearing of their control would cause some serious problems. There will always be someone to try and fill the void left by previous ruling power.

George Sears4224d ago

PirateThom

Portable Ops is not only cannon, but the events that transpired in PO was also mentioned briefly in Peace Walker.

Nate-Dog4224d ago

The game has been confirmed as canon by a KJP employee. The only person who can deny or retcon this later on would surely be Kojima himself and I doubt he will since I don't see any further main titles in the MGS series taking place after MGS4, but then again it doesn't seem to have an end in sight.

Eamon4224d ago

A lot of retarded misinformation here. Let me get this straight for you guys

Snake's revenge = Not Canon
Ac!d games = Not canon
Portable Ops = Canon
Rising = Canon

Portable Ops isn't a spin-off. It's part of the main story and is actually crucial in Big Boss' story. You find out how Big Boss got the funds to create MSF and even the idea. A lot of behind-the-scenes events are also important for example Zero's manipulation and Ocelot's betrayal of the CIA President. In the end, half of the Philosopher's Legacy made it to Zero and the other half made it to Big Boss.

Rising is a spin-off as it's story is not significant enough to be considered part of the main story. It's a sidestory. If you ever wandered how the world in Metal Gear changes after MGS4, then MGR is what you get. Even the gameplay is different to Rising is spin-off but in terms of story, it is canon - just a sidestory.

I know there are some insecure people here who will deny Rising's existence for their own mentally weird reasons but that's the truth.

jc485734224d ago (Edited 4224d ago )

not trying to be an ass, but just because it doesn't "feel" like MGS game, it doesn't mean it can't be canon.

Konami's Yuji Korekado responds that this canon

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

you are free to think what you like or how you feel about the game, but the guys in charge decide whether this is canon or not. Even w/o Yuji's response on this, I think it's important for us to know the difference. I ask you this, is that Raiden in the game? If he is, how does that make the game non canon? Is he changing the story of MGS? No, they are simply adding/ creating a story about Raiden that happens years after the events of MGS4. This is in final a sidestory canon that takes place in the same universe.

@Eamon

I'm concerned that they don't know the difference between canon and noncanon.

@outside_ofthe_box

Kojima gave the green light, so he must've read the script. You guys are just creating more confusion. By all means this is sidetory canon.

Outside_ofthe_Box4224d ago

MGR is a "filler." It's more like a what-if take on what happens in the future after MGS4. Kojima isn't even writing the story lol. In short it isn't canon. Not that it takes away from the game. I've been anticipating MGR for a while now.

PirateThom4224d ago

Re: Portable Ops to Peace Walker

As I said below Huey explains the Metal Gear concept to Big Boss. Big Boss, in Portable Ops, fought 2 Metal Gears already.

Secondly, at the end of Portable Ops, he's amassed a sizable army, in Peace Walker, he has a shack and a few soliders on a beach.

Thirdly, Big Boss never recieved any of the legacy. It was used to found the Patriots.

Portable Ops was cannon until Peace Walker released and Kojima decided it wasn't.

Fez4224d ago

Metal gear social ops is canon.... suck it bitches haha Otacon creates an epic card game which results in a rather serious gambling problem....

wishingW3L4224d ago (Edited 4224d ago )

If Rising with its mediocre premise is cannon I would kill myself. Seriously... Beside, if it wasn't written by KojiPro and directed by Kojima then is not cannon just like MGS Twin Snakes. PlatGames changed way too many things on the original script to be cannon anyway.

Knight_Crawler4224d ago

Sorry for sounding like a noob but why does Raiden not age and old snake age so quick?

Is it because Raiden is full cyborg?

MattyG4224d ago

I'm probably wrong but I think it either has do do with the fact that Snake is a clone or the FOXDIE virus. Cant remember exactly.

Tito084224d ago

Due to complications in the cloning process, & pretty much Big Boss was already old by then, that probably prompted Snake to age fast, maybe the same could have happened to Liquid as well, Solidus was the 3rd Snake, but he was the oldest looking of the 3...

About Raiden, IDK, Raiden's story is a little bit misterious as well.... But I think he was either born a normal birth or cloned differently, I forgot a little about it in MGS2, IDK very well. But I know MGS2 took place in 2009, so Raiden pretty much was in his early to mid 20s, so in 2018, he'd might be around his early to mid 30s..

Eamon4224d ago

Snake ageing quickly is due to his own body as a clone and nothing to do with FOXDIE. When he was created, his genes were 'programmed' to start ageing rapidly at a certain age. This was to prevent his genes from getting stolen into the wrong hands or something, I can't remember. In MGS2, we see an aged Solidus. Solidus was the perfect clone of Big Boss and so he was programmed to age at an earlier age than the other two twin Snakes.

As for Raiden, well it's only been like 4 years since MGS4 so as he is already an adult, the change isn't obvious. Although, since he is almost full cyborg there's a chance he wouldn't age as fast or in the same way as normal humans.

wenaldy4224d ago

Both Solid and Liquid are imperfect clone for Big Boss, only Solidus (George Sears) matches exactly like Big Boss hence the old appeareance in young aging and due to FOXDIE injection by Naomi, Solid Snake suffers aging acceleration syndrome.

Fez4224d ago

Snake was designed to be a weapon and was therefore made to age rapidly and die young so he couldn't be used by any enemies or incase he went rogue...

Raiden just has a baby-face hehe

UnwanteDreamz4224d ago

EAMON and FEZ are correct. The snakes were made that way.

Lf_sIcKmAn4224d ago

Sure, raiden lost both his arms protecting snake from the Boat crushing him and now they magically regrew? dude, raiden is almost full cyborg but his parts at the end of the game are meant to look like a normal human, you can see the cyborgs scars in his arms too… He just doesn't wear the armor anymore.

BTW this is probably one of the greatest things I've seen in a game…
Thank you Mr. Kojima!

wishingW3L4224d ago (Edited 4224d ago )

Raiden is all cyborg. I think only his brain, spine and maybe his heart are human like in Ghost in the Shell. Arms, legs, etc. can be replaced.

It kind of creepy when you think about and that's what makes it so cool!

Well, from what I think, We had enough BIG BOSS experience , We already played both MGS3 & MGS:PW. and now, We got Big boss again in MGS:GZ. Solid Snake is the only one who we didn't experience much. we just saw him in the original MGS and just a very little bit in MGS2, It was all about Raiden, who got his own game now. We definitely need More Solid Snake games.

Eamon4224d ago

MGS4 is very likely to be Solid Snake's last story.

Kojima now wants to tell the story of Big Boss.

UnwanteDreamz4224d ago (Edited 4224d ago )

If Solid Snake is done then MGS should change back to MG IMO.
Its not Metal Gear Solid without Solid Snake.

Carl_Shocker4225d ago

I hope they can bring Snake back

I would say differn't considering the ending of MGS4 but this is MGS, the world they live in is full of surprizes because of the tec they have.

I hope they can make Snake young again and finding a cure to the aging process with him being a clone, maybe it could be a plot point in MGS5

PirateThom4224d ago

I think MGS4 pretty much showed where Kojima's focus is, he's presenting Big Boss as some sort of shining beacon of light in the series, rather than the insane bad guy he was in the orignal games.

Which is fair enough, but as time passes I think the focus will never come back to Snake, but remain on Big Boss since he seems to have surplanted Snake as the main character in the series.

Batzi4224d ago

Add MG1, MG2 & MGS4 to your list.

one2thr4225d ago (Edited 4225d ago )

@Carl
Sadly enough there really isnt any cure for what Solid Snake has, seeing that the nano bots within his blood stream is whats causing him to age rapidly. And that will also cause harm to anyone around him, seeing that they also mutated into some form of bio weapon, ever since Naomi injected him with fox die(the nano's)...

But then again whats to say that Sunny, didnt figure out a way to re-program the nano bots to actually revitalize snake health, based off of the same nano tech that made Vamp somewhat supernatural with his regenerative healing factor that he inherited from the nano bots Naomi had injected to him as well...

And by doing so, it has given them the chance to even clone Solid Snake...
But then again, they can also make more clones of Big Boss seeing that he wasnt injected with any of that none sense(Fox Die), but who'll play the surrogate mother this time around?

Slugg3r4225d ago

The aging was just because of BB's genes. If you clone a man out of 40 year old man's genes, his cells will still be 40 years old. This is the real problem presented in todays cloning. And the Foxdie didn't turn Snake in toa bioweapon, that is why he didn't kill himself in the end, BB came and told him about that.

Nyxus4225d ago

Snake dies at an early age because he was intentionally created with a short life span. In other words, he doesn't die because of FoxDie or nanomachines, or anything like that, but of old age.

Psycho_Mantis4225d ago

Its highly unlikely that Solid Snake would still be alive by that time... but then again just because they say that he wont be making an appearance doesnt mean that we wont at least get some kind of mentioned of him in some way. I mean, it would just be strange if we dont get anything related to Solid Snake in Rising.

ChipChipperson4225d ago

I hope an easter egg for Rising involves seeing Sunny cook eggs, just for old times' sake.

I hope so, still cant forget MGS Survive , the first MGS game without Kojima involvement and it was a complete failure, the thing is Kojima way of thinking is outside the box and that's why their games 99% end up unique, original and a almost instant classic. MGS series are full of intricate things that somehows connects to each other, Lalulilelo, the Patriots, Outher heaven, Foxhound, PMCs , heck even Kojima manage to insert DARPA in there lol, a US government Defense Agency. So is really great MGS3 Remake is reviving the series but without Kojima who knows of the end result, I hope Konami have another or more developers insight their studios who can also think outside the box.

senorfartcushion318d ago

It actually can’t. But it won’t matter.

Kojima is Metal Gear the same way that Christopher Nolan is The Dark Knight, or David Lynch is Twin Peaks: The Return episode 8. Artistry is the creation of a thing from your own thoughts and feelings. Take away the original artist’s thoughts and feelings and you have a new thing entirely.

This isn’t going to stop the mega corporation creating a fake version and spending millions TELLING customers that it’s made with the same thoughts and feelings. The masses will buy the idea the same way the corporation will sell the idea.

just_looken318d ago

neutralgamer1992318d ago

i think the bigger issue is whether or not Konami is actually interested in fully funding AAA games development. Even this remake is done by a studio not really known in gaming industry. Quality remake/projets vs cheap cash in quick releases. Which way will Konami head. I am a huge MGS fan and i feel like Kojima did long time MGS fans dirty with how made MGS5 and it's story elements

senorfartcushion317d ago

Remakes and remasters provide a gateway through to producing AAA games faster and cheaper.

RaveTears317d ago (Edited 317d ago )

Actually MGS Portable Ops which was technically the first canon MGS game that Kojima wasn’t mainly involved with it. Kojima was only the producer but not the writer and director.

Konami did other MGS spin off that were successful but that because Konami put effort. Just along Konami is not lazy and cash grab, they can a MGS game without Kojima.

Why We Need Metal Gear Rising 2

Demand for a sequel is about to skyrocket, like the good ol' days of 2013!

In case you're living under a suspiciously rock-shaped object, the recent PlayStation Showcase revealed that a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3 will be coming, alongside a Master Collection of Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, and 3. While it is a remake of an existing game, there's a great deal of significance to it, considering the last time a game in the series came out was back in 2018 with Metal Gear Survive (and the less said about that, the better). Konami's decision to pull a Konami and feud with series creator Hideo Kojima has long left the fate of Metal Gear uncertain, but this recent announcement has led to all bets being off as to where Metal Gear can go from here.
