Horizon not out to challenge Gran Turismo or Forza

Forza Horizon is coming to Xbox in October, but developer Playground games has a hard sell convincing those who have negative views on Forza 4 that this is a new game entirely. There is also a sense that Horizon being its own game is not a participant in the Grand Turismo, Forza rivalry. It fits somewhere else entirely.

gran turismo got along way to go to even be mentioned with forza. look at forza games metacritic compared to gt5 metacritic and its prolouges and gt4 and portables ones. just destroyed it. gt6 got alot to learn.

Dante1124230d ago (Edited 4230d ago )

I wonder why Forza 3 or 4 didn't sell as much as GT5 if it's somehow better? I also like how your logic differs from the logic you had on NPD, fiscal report sales of the 360 and the Halo series ("People vote with their money on which system is better and as you see here...", "Killzone sales..Halo sales", etc), FordGTGuy.

Edit: Gran Turismo 5 Prologue even sold more than Forza 3 and 4.

@StraightPath HAHAHAHAHA

CernaML4230d ago

Yet Gran Turismo will always destroy it in popularity and relevance. Polyphony Digital doesn't need to worry about anything when they release their next game. The competition should. :P

Turn 10 play it too safe. They need to show some ambition and not release the same game every 2 years.

SilentNegotiator4230d ago

GT got judged a million times harder than Forza.

mcstorm4230d ago

Dante112 so by your logic the best game. This gen is wii sports because its sold the most? Or COD is better than ever . FPS game out there. Or even the iphone is the best phone on the market because its sold more?

Sales dont = quality or mean its better than anything else on the marlet.

GT5 sold well because it is a known and an established IP tha has a massive fan base. I am a massive GT fan owned every GT game PD have given us and even i can see GT5 was a big mess when it came out and was far from finished and that is why we got 2.0 a year after release.

I give PD all the credit for updating the game since it was released but even now it is still unfinished but as most GT fans know it was not PDs fauld it was a mess it was sonys because the forced PD to release the game early.

As for Forza 4 being the better game i think it is in its all round game because it was finished and yes its missing things like night racing, weather ect but everything feels quality in the game and the online is unrivaled for what it offers from GT.

Im sure PD will not make the same mistake with GT6 as 5 because of the way the fans still backed a unfinished game.

As for forza horizon I cant wait to pick this game up. Ive wanted a new project Gotham racing for a few years now and this is looking like it will be the new pgr game and from what ive seen it may even be better.

That is what I like to hear, see this is why I say Horizon is its own IP, they aren't competing with Forza Motorsport or any other racer. I like it when companies do things their own way and don't try and copy or beat anything else.

Really looking forward to this one.

NukaCola4230d ago

So this is an open world racer? As in fully open or open across America but linear like the run?

I really think it could be fun just to drive for the hell of it. I'm sure there will be an achievement for driving like 10,000 or something.

Also, I agree it's cool they are making a new IP in their universe. Branching out is always a great choice. I wonder if new cars introduced in Horizon will be playable in F4 or visa versa.

'Kratos_GodOfWar
I make my own review I like gt more then forza'

Hey, if GT5 is your cup of tea, then more the power to you! Just don't go forcing it down peoples necking yelling "THE KING OF RACERS" Everyone has a different definition of a good racing game! For me GT5 wasn't it!

hennessey864230d ago

I love playing Forza 4 and GT5 and I will be getting horizon, true sim racers don't care about the platform a games on.

10 Years On, It's Hard To Actually Celebrate Forza Horizon's Legacy

Forza Horizon has been around for 10 years today, but due to the franchise's constant "End Of Life" policies, it's hard to celebrate.

Literally the only XBox exclusive that I still regularly play. I'm glad I had bought FH3 (PC) when I did, but this really sucks for other people who never picked it up. I still love the Australian Outback setting most of all.

PlayStation 3: chasing the 1080p dream, part three - Gran Turismo 5 and the indie explosion

From Digital Foundry: "Welcome to the third part in the biggest DF Retro episode we've ever produced - a year-by-year look at how 1080p gaming fared on the PlayStation 3. Launched in 2007 touting its then-exclusive HDMI digital interface, Sony layered full HD gaming on top of its Cell processor and RSX 'Reality Synthesizer' as key selling points for its third generation console. Of course, we all know how that turned out - both Sony and Microsoft machines routinely ran the most advanced titles at sub-720p resolutions, often with questionable performance, so what happened to the 1080p dream?

In the first two parts of John Linneman's investigation, we've covered off the first four years of the Triple's lifecycle and moving into 2010, the overall fortunes of the PlayStation 3 continued to improve. The platform holder released - what was then - the most advanced motion controller in the console space, backed up by experiments with stereoscopic 3D, which turned out to be a short-lived but still formidable pairing. Combined with a strong E3 showing, PS3 was looking good.

However, it's fair to say that it was a fallow year for 1080p gaming on the system, with only Scott Pilgrim Saves The World's razor-sharp pixel art upscaling, Castle Crashers and Soldner X2's 3D/FMV stylings accommodating full HD output - alongside a wonderful Monkey Island remaster."

Just remember ladies and gentlemen, Sony never said all games would be 1080p. Only that the system would support games up to 1080p in a survey before the system was released.
https://spong.com/article/9...
And as we saw, some games did support it, some games tried their best to support it and some games didn't or never reached it.

Is a higher resolution great to have if you can do it? Sure. Is it necessary for a fun game? No

But what I find interesting is Eurogamer. Are they really talking about HD and PS3 in their article or are they really pushing their 4.50 Euros 4K video download subscription? Seems one is being used to sell the other. Just look at the bottom of the article.

Michiel1989634d ago

thats what every company tries to do, push for people to buy their products. Are you really gonna blame them for that?

ApocalypseShadow633d ago

Not all articles are about selling. They're about informing or entertaining.

Maybe I'm supposed to watch the video instead of reading. But I shouldn't have to click. But the article lazily tells us some games did hit 1080p and some didn't. I didn't learn anything new as I own the console. Then, they push a Patreon subscription.

Are you saying every opinion, preview, review and rant article requires a push to buy something now? Tell me which sites are prone to do so so that I can avoid them in the future.

Michiel1989633d ago

not everyone played during the ps3 era. I started during snes era but loved seeing articles/videos about how gaming evolved before that.

i dont think this article is trying to push you to get that patreon sub, it doesnt for me at least. I dont think theres anything wrong putting an ad at the bottom of the article. all the regular DF videos are free already.

SonyStyled634d ago

Wipeout HD on PS3, a remake of the PS1 game was 1080p 60fps. And that released in 2007-08

Christopher634d ago

This really feels like a filler article. I don't feel like I learned anything notable or substantial from this. I feel they could have reduced the unnecessary intro and over-explanation of things and put the whole series in one article for a more substantial and possibly informative piece rather than piece-mealing it out as they have.

dumahim634d ago

It's more about the video. DF Retro videos are for Patreon members first, and I think the whole thing was one big video. For the youtube channel, it gets chopped up and released weekly.

ApocalypseShadow633d ago

Chris is actually right on this one. Something known already was just kind of washed over in the article. Unless you're supposed to get more in the video. If more is in the video, then more could have been said in the article.

Only thing I learned new was that they are selling a subscription. My point though is that you gain more viewers by having better articles and content.

Forza Horizon Games Ranked from Worst to Best

BLG writes: "When the Forza Horizon games franchise launched in 2012, it was an enjoyable spin-off of the highly successful simulation racer. A decade later, the Horizon series has overtaken Forza Motorsport series as one of, if not the, premiere driving video games of all time."

Don't think there's literally a "worst" Forza game man. Microsoft just makes these too damn good.

MaximusPrime_656d ago

Microsoft didn't develop (make) Forza, Playground Games did.

Microsoft simply published it.

SinisterMister656d ago

Ah okay. Thanks for the correction mate!

MadLad656d ago

I see no difference being they've only ever made games for Microsoft on Microsoft's dime for the entirety of their existence as a developer.

Godmars290656d ago

@MadLad:
The amount of MTs and repeated attempts at rivalry towards Gran Turismo.

darthv72656d ago

@god, i think you are confusing motorsport with horizon. MS is compared to GT, Horizon isnt.

@godmars

Care to explain how that has anything to do with anything here?

DOMination-656d ago

lol.. pedantic much? ^ PG and the Forza IP are owned by Microsoft.

FH5 may be a technical marvel but it's been a buggy mess since launch and PG seem intent to add new content without ever bothering to fix anything. Many of which were bugs that were also in FH4.

FH3
FH1
FH4
FH5
FH2 (still good but the structure was messed up - too much emphasis on grinding "roadtrips" which was tedious)

jznrpg656d ago (Edited 656d ago )

They didn’t buy Playground until 2018 or 2019 I forget which year but it hasn’t been that long . The first Forza came out in 2005 . So most of the games were published by MS at the time but they didn’t own PlayGround. MS doesn’t make good studios in general , they buy them .

DOMination-656d ago

When Sony buys a studio after working with them for a couple of games, people on here call it an "organic purchase". MS & Playground made three very good games, based on an existing IP using an engine made by Turn 10 before purchasing them. But it is still pedantic. Shall we say that Sony didn't make The Last of Us? Or that they don't "own" the first 12 Ratchet & Clank games because they only purchase Insomniac a few years back? We all know what they meant.

Anyway, Forza Motorsport has always been developed by Turn 10. Which Microsoft built from the ground up. So when you refer to games from 2005, your point about only buying studios is completely wrong.

darthv72656d ago

You left out a FH2, there were two versions. The one made for XBO by playground and the one made for 360 by sumo digital. There are enough differences to warrant each one being on its own.

monkey602656d ago

FH3 is my favourite by a long shot. I got surprisingly bored of FH5 quick enough unfortunately so that's down the bottom of my list

sammarshall102656d ago

Yeah I think this series peaked with Forza Horizon 3

Orbilator655d ago

I really dont care for any of the horizons. Hate having to do what I'm told. Forza 7 was the same, I didn't want to do anything other than race cars. But it made me drive lorries!!!..

Technically they all good games but I want the next Forza to be a proper car racer, all the trucks etc can be put under an arcade racing section which I never have to go into.

MrBaskerville655d ago

The mandatory gimmick races are a bit of a bad habit in FM games, atleast since 5. Also dislike the heavy amount of unskipable cutscenes and dialouge in FM5 and perhaps 7.

Azraeia655d ago

Tbh I found FH3 to actually be my favourite and the one I played the most.

The one I got bored of very quickly was 4. Wasn't a fan of the seasons and driving round England was boring cause its where I live. Got very old quick.

glennhkboy655d ago

I still think 2 (Xbox One version) is my personal best. Driving an Italian supercars on an Italian highway just feel so "right"!!!!! "2" make me understand why Italian make those supercars.

I don't know why so many do not like 4. I like the seasonal change & dramatic weather change. 5 seems to dial the weather change way way down that the weather seldom change (Is the real Mexico really has such a perfect weather all the time?).
