As for the models that include the hdd, it is assumed they are internal but now it would appear they are locked to those sizes.

I am not sure why you cannot understand what I wrote. Its does not take much brain cells. So let me try this again in bullet points. Try and keep up.

* Sony had a revision of the PS3. I see no value in the revision if you already have a PS3

* I looked at the specs sheet of the new PS3 revision and I used the WiiU to makes a comparison of the fact the PS3 (old technology) still use more power (watts) than the WiiU (more advance technology).

* My third point is that I will consider doing away with my current PS3 when the PS4 is released.

Until there are shipping Wii U games that are ported from PS3/X360 running side by side with PS3 or X360, it's only hype from Nintendo.

Ever wonder why Nintendo is very selective in showing Wii U games that are ported from other consoles? They refused to show the graphics on Wii U in details compared to PS3 or X360 than showing the tablet controller.

This ps3 revision is likely sony's attempt at reducing production costs, increasing efficiency of the unit with respect to older units and reducing the price for new adopters.

it baffles me that you think this is somehow aimed at existing ps3 owners as an upgrade, and your comparison with the wiiU wattage is just plain nonsense. of course new tech is more powerful but its also much more efficient as a direct result of it being more cutting edge, that's where the research goes. modern chips are evolving to be much more efficient so why would you expect this revision to be any more energy efficient than a next gen system.

As I pointed out before, you can certainly draw parallels with what happened with the PS2. The PS2 launched March, 2000. In 2004 they announced the PS2 had reached 70 million consoles sold, and in November 2004, almost 5 years in they unveiled the PS2 slim with a price of $149 and 70 million ended up not even being the halfway point in the PS2's lifetime sales. At 5 years, 9 months the PS2 had hit 100 million proving the $149 price point to be the sweet spot last gen.

By contrast the PS3 certainly faced an uphill battle with it's initially pricing, competition and the worst economic downturn in a generation staring down households. This holiday season will be 6 years for the PS3 since it's initial, limited launch (if you remember it wasn't available worldwide until March 2007) and it looks set to pass the 70 million mark this holiday season.
The PS3 took it a bit longer to reach this milestone than the PS2 but in a declining market, the PS3 seems to be the most resilient console hanging on to more sales year over year than it's competitors (Microsoft's last financial updated showed 360 sales down 43% for the first 6 months of the year compared to the same period last year, and Wii sales have dropped off a cliff ahead of the Wii-U's launch).

We all saw what effect the PS2 slim and $149 price point meant to the PS2's long term success, but the market is different. Would a $199 PS3 have the same sales impact? Would a $149 PS3? The industry in general could certainly use some stimulus, but is this enough? Or will the Wii-U be the factor that provides the much needed boost?

I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Looks better than the current PS3 but those grooves in the middle were unnecessary a matte finish would have been better those grooves will also be a pain to keep clean and did Sony replace the elegant grab disc tray with a cheap open lid drive? They will never sell the PS3 at $99. Not at this time though, for the PS3 to hit that price the PS4 will be at least 1 year old.

The cheapest the PS3 would get is $150, which it should be by now. Sony made a mistake by not lowering the price at least to $200 for Christmas.

People without a PS3 will go to a store and see the Wii U at the same price, and will choose it just for the fact that it's a new console, and better (even if it's not by much) than the PS3. If Sony had lowered the price to $199.99 at least it would get a better chance to sell better this holiday.

I was really expecting to see one come in at $199 or less in response to the Wii U, although I did expect a high capacity model for $299 to make it seem current with Wii U's technology...as in not outdated and worth just as much on the market. That's my point though. It doesn't really matter about added value when going up against a new system. Have you ever talked to an average consumer about storage space? They have no idea what the advantage is of more disc space, or why they might need it. For the $299 model it's the same price as the regular Wii U, so people would likely opt for the newer system on the market, just because it's newer. to the average consumer newer == better.

The $249 one may serve it's purpose in this regard though, however a 12GB model could have been a great selling point for Sony over the holiday when up against a $299 Wii U.

They kept the same price with more HDD Space, but they should have lower the price. People don't care about the value as much as a lower price. We all saw the proof in the launch PS3. Outstanding value, but nobody cared at $599.99.

Also, the 12 Gb for Europe or Japan is €200 so it doesn't sound cheap either. By this time, the PS3 should be the same cost as the Xbox 360 at the very least.

IMO, this is a bad move from Sony, but I am not an expert in marketing.

It's not really odd when you consider the Wii U will doing it. and the two consoles are now competing.

The Wii U actually has two rather lackluster storage options imo. But they aren't asking you to use proprietary and expensive accessories to enhance that storage. They're giving the consumer the choice and asking those that want more storage to bear the extra cost. Sony originally had a standard HD with decent storage options and then you could bear the cost of adding if you wished to. Not being proprietary you could find inexpensive options for to upgrade.

If this was a competition issue then Sony would keep that choice available for their new models. It also leads me to believe that the hard drives aren't upgradable in the other two models, so you may not be able to just swap out with a bigger hard drive like a lot of people were hoping.

Sony said ANY HDD will do - or their 250GB dedicated add on. I presume, Sony's kit includes the mounting braked, while you'd have to buy this extra to add your own storage. Nice that it's internal. No external case or space required.

If you can use any hard drive with the new slims then I apologize for saying it couldn't, but I could only go off what the articles were saying. Maybe something was lost in translation, or a convenient omission to stir up trouble on the media's part.

As to the Wii U wiggle and nunchuk, no they don't. Nor does it come with a pro controller. Accessories will always be around to sell, but things like dedicated peripherals such as a hard drive marked up well beyond retail value is a step in the wrong direction.

Sounds like the 12GB flash memory is an internal SSD. But it is so small that one onder if it is integrated on the motherboard...

Done right this could be used as a fast cache, done wrong it would be slower then the current SATA HDs...

The second model of PS3 (the first slim version) will surely remain the best type of PS3 and anyone who still wants a PS3 should probably just get one of those before they stop being sold. A motorised disc tray is classier than having none. I don't know if it's the case here but there comes a point where a console becomes so slim (usually accompanied by a softer design to appeal to the mass market) that it starts to cheapen the look of it. The fat PS3 may have had backwards compatibility but its huge tombstone like design is not a good look for many people and its Spiderman font suggested a relative lack of imagination.

I have been your loyal follower since 1998 but, similar to Square Enix, what you have done this gen baffles me. High launch price point, lack of games to accompany the high price point and now this. This was your chance to hit $199 and massivley boost sales for the holiday and take some of WiiU's momentum with a $99-$149 cheaper console (12GB), but now this just looks like another bundle. I fear this will not boost sales beyond one week for replacements.
I am happy with the titles you have pushed out and dedication to gaming, but next gen a strategy shake-up (marketing included) is needed.

is it $99, for a last gen console that looks like an old vhs or cassete player, thats about all i'd pay, 360 should come out with one that actually is housed inside of old recycled vhs players, lol.....they could save tons of money and sell them for like $50
