The Wii U Launch Titles Easily Beat The PS3 and 360s Launch Lineups

The Wii U launch titles has been under fire from a lot of gamers online lately. We continually hear the Wii U launch titles are not that good and many have voiced their concern with the amount of ports that have been announced for the system. While we always want to see original games on any system the quality of the ports and the general misunderstanding of a new console into the industry has us defending the Wii U launch line up here at playeressence.com

Better is always a matter of opinion. But it does have a very strong launch lineup.

Hatsune-Miku4236d ago

I'm looking forward to the Wii u but a lot of the launch games are ports which are better on the ps3 and Xbox. The Wii u needs more original games and I'm Hoping for a strong lineup of new IPs at the nintendo event. Games Im not looking forward to are Mario and the usual suspects. Nintendo Wii u will cater more to core so I hope that is proven on Thursday where there should be an outline of quality titles due to be released within eight months or so

Theyellowflash304236d ago

The Wii U launch lineup has more original titles than the PS3 and 360 at their launches.

BattleAxe4236d ago

^^^

Oh yeah? Yours is smaller than mine.

nukeitall4236d ago (Edited 4236d ago )

I agree. When the Xbox 360 came out, it didn't need many games to stir the pot. It had games that looked awesome and had a lot of promise for what would come.

On the other hand, having lots of ports for the Wii U seems uninterresting and there are no games on that list I really want. The only game I care for happens to be a port of Mass Effect 3. I don't think the secondary screen will add even as much as what Kinect did to the Xbox 360 version.

I want to buy the Wii U, excited for it and think that it is where things are going to happen similar to the Xbox 360s arrival. Looking forward to see what they are going to do with their online network, although what they have shown doesn't seem like it will be a competitor to PSN let alone Xbox Live.

None the less, I'm likely buying one!

EVILDEAD3604236d ago

LOL are we REALLY comparing launches of the next gen Wii-u to the launch of the 360 in 2005 and the PS3?

Come back and make this same article when the 720 and PS4 launch. I bet the story may turn out a little different.

ABizzel14236d ago

No to rain on anyone's parade, but comparing the Wii-U launch to the PS360 and saying it's better is a bit far-stretched.

Just looking at the launch games of the two and most would say the Wii-U, but it's deeper than that. The Wii-U is riding off the coattails of the PS360 which is the only reason it has Assassin's Creed 3, Batman Arkham City: Armored Edition, Darksiders 2, Mass Effect 3, Ninja Gadien : Razor's Edge, and Tekken Tag Tournament 2 (possibly others, but these are the ones that matter).

If it wasn't for PS360 launching 6 years ago the Wii-U would have none of these games. Add to the fact that they'll never be able to play any of the prequels (Unless the developers / publishers pull a Sony and start making "Saga / Trilogy Collections").

What's the point of owning Mass Effect 3, if you'll never be able to play Mass Effect 1 & 2. The Wii-U has a great line-up for anyone who only owned a Wii last generation, for everyone else, it's a collection of ports, Pikmin / P-100 (if you like it), New Super Mario Bros. U, Wii-like Mini Games (if you like them), and ZombiU.

Nimblest-Assassin4236d ago (Edited 4236d ago )

I agree with the title, that the wiiU launch line up is much stronger than both the PS3 and 360... the problem is a majority of the games that will launch with the system are already out on 360 and Ps3.. making ZombiU, Rayman Legends, NSMB U, and NINTENDURLAND the only games people have not played

I really hope on Thursday, Nintendo shows games that makes me excited and want a wiiU

ronin4life4236d ago

@Abizzel
And what of the Xbox and ps2? You seem to forget the gen before this one and the relations between them...

_-EDMIX-_4235d ago

@Abizzel- Could not agree any more. Plus people would need to understand that this is not a system with "new" tech, its acutally a system with tech comparable to this gen, thus its easier to make games for.

If the Wii Launched and had a bunch of PS2 games, would people be jumping and comparing it to the PS3 or 360 launch, completely disregarding that the PS3 and 360 at the time had new tech to consoles?

Wii U, is pretty much a PS3 or 360 in terms of tech, the only reason Launches for systems are dry have more to do with the timing and technology then anything. Hints, why the PSV launch and 360 launch had so many titles, 360's launch had PS2, and PC ports, Gun, Tony Hawk Wasteland, Quake 4, Bully, COD2, Splinter Cell Double Agent etc. Now really, what is so "next gen" about those titles? I would say COD2 and Quake 4 get a pass based on being PC titles in the same respect WatchDogs and Star Wars 1313 will get a pass if they launch on 720 and PS4.

But the Wii U isn't getting titles like that, they are just getting ports from PS3 and 360 games, not PC ports (which just shows how inferior the system will be compared to the PS4 nad 720)

The point is to not have a lot of "titles" its to actually have titles that are "next gen" or in the Wii U's terms "use the screen pad and play in 1080p) but clearly from what we've heard, not many games will even be in 1080p. If its just a bunch of PS3 and 360 ports, whats the point of even applauding such a thing?

"Slow down guys, i need to buy a $400 360 because of GUN and TONY HAWK WASTELAND! Oh yeah, i own a PS2 too"

Same applies to the Wii U, and mind you its not even NEXT GEN, where it counts. The ports will dry up after PS4 and 720 come out...then what? 3rd parties want to make bank on systems with similar power ie why Mass Effect isn't on the Wii. But WHY IT IS ON THE WII U!!!!! Where does Wii U stand with titles like Mass Effect 4 or BF5 etc?

It won't get those games cause EA is trying to make money off of the most systems with the most similar specs ie PS4, 720 and PC JUST LIKE PS3,360 and PC before it. (PC being both Next gen and current at all times)

So saying Wii U's launch has a lot of games and acting surprised is quite silly. Wii U is current gen in terms of tech...why wouldn't it have ports from this gen's games?

Wii U is going to be what Wii was this gen.

Left behind. Next gen in terms of timing (to the Nintendo fanboys who seem to think the title of "next gen" warrants anything)

but its current gen in terms of tech. (CLEARLY where it counts)

sikbeta4235d ago (Edited 4235d ago )

@Theyellowflash30

There are a bunch of ports though, even if NOA President says otherwise, it doesn't matter though, Mario and a nice price-tag is all Nintendo needs, $250 packed with a game and wii all over again...

AsimLeonheart4235d ago

Man, I dont understand what all this debate is about!? Why the hell are people comparing the supposedly "nex-gen" WiiU with PS3 and XBOX360?? If it is a nex-gen system then compare it to the upcoming PS4 and XBOX720. If it is a current gen system then it is almost 7 years late with marginally improved performance so no big deal even it somewhat trumps them. Seriously, it is just an underpowered 7 year late console. What is so incredible about it that Nintendo fans are defending it like crazy? Actually I think Nintendo fans should be outraged considering how Nintendo is screwing them second generation in a row.

MRMagoo1234235d ago

@AsimLeonheart

exactly what i was thinking

jeseth4235d ago

This sounds crazy, but not a single person I know cares or even knows when the Wii U is launching.

I'm really surprised by the lack of interest in this system. On a personal note, I'm interested un Zombie U. Caught my eye at E3.

Army_of_Darkness4235d ago

Most of the Good games on the wiiU's line up are either ports from current consoles or can be found on other consoles, so I don't find their line up better in terms of convincing me to buy their new system...
Still waiting to be impressed Nintendo.

Problem is Wii U has to face PS3/360 as they are right now, not as they launched.

Gamer19824236d ago (Edited 4236d ago )

Indeed the writer of this article is downright stupid or biased for not knowing that. PS3/360 was competing against ps2/gamecube (xbox was dropped)

sikbeta4235d ago

I want to know how MS and Sony will react to the new console from Nintendo, new model from Sony @ $200 or less as rumored and X360 price cut which is time now, or they'll see how the U sells and based on that will make a move?...

NukaCola4236d ago

I know I sound dumb or a hater for this, but the Wii U line up isn't spectacular. There are only a few original games. I own or will own all those 3rd party titles on PS3. The Mario game is another 2D title like we have seen over and over again this gen. And Pikmin 3 is a Wii game upscaled. I think they are rushing to push this out the door.

I think Nintendo wants to be smart and get that head start but they could of launched a year later and delivered a Zelda, Metroid, Smash and more exclusive 1st party titles.

Not saying it's a better or worse than PS3 or 360. I think Nintendo home consoles usually always launch with great games. I think they could of waited. The first year looks ok at best. I still think they are going to Relaunch it next Christmas when the big hitter come out.

Zombie U looks awesome tho for sure. And if Rayman is exclusive, I'll get it. I loved Origins to death.

ConstipatedGorilla4236d ago

Going way back, but I remember I bought a SNES at launch. It launched with Super Mario World (my favorite 2D mario of all time), and I think Pilot Wings, Populus, and Final Fight (the dumbed down version). I was still very excited to have it - though at the time it was considered powerful - because I knew that there would be great games down the road. So in comparison to THAT it's a strong launch for a Nintendo console. I just hope we see great stuff down the road.

tehpees34236d ago (Edited 4236d ago )

I guess its my opinion that the Mass Effect 3 port looks far superior to the quake 4 port. 360 launched with a lot of overhyped third party games that were clearly rushed to cash in on launch. Gun was the example of a bad overhyped game which had a terrible port.

If your looking at it from a first party perspective I would say 360 is better but overall I would say Wii U trumps both PS3 and 360 for launch lineup. Thats the thing about ports. You know exactly what your getting into. We will see how AC3 holds up but we know mass effect and darksiders are good games and I would argue the quality of those games is better than any third party PS3 or 360 launch title.

And of course people will compare it to launch lineups because its launch lineups you should compare it with. It will take a while before the true support shows for any next gen system. Quite frankly I don't think the 720 launch lineup will look as appealing to me because this might have Tekken as a launch title (something that hasn't happened since PS2). And 720s launch lineup is likely to be very shooter approached compared to this.

There is also a good amount of variety and they are all quality games in their genres. But this goes on if Tekken is a launch title (hopefully). Ninja Gaiden 3 also deserves another chance I think. It looks a lot more true to the previous games now.

fr0sty4236d ago (Edited 4236d ago )

To be expected considering this console is coming in on the heels of an almost 7 year old generation, offering only marginal improvements at best and therefore not able to be classified as a generation above the current lineup (from a development perspective). Being that the majority of what wii U is getting are current gen ports running on current gen engines, it isn't fair to compare it to the 360 and PS3 launches that were next gen titles running on next gen engines. Of course the lineup will be a lot more sparse when you're struggling to code a new engine on new hardware, resulting in many games that were supposed to launch with the system being delayed. Most of the dev tools and franchises to port are already in place, and even new titles can be made using existing engines (like the latest version of Unreal Engine 3).

avengers19784235d ago

when one or more of the games is already 6 months to a year old and at least 6 of the games are on current gen consoles, and really nothing that is much better if at all better then current gen, then how is it a better line up

fatstarr4235d ago

this is probably one of Nintendo strongest launch lineups interns of quality 3rd party, quality variety mixed with first party games

morkendo234235d ago

no offence to any gamer. but if the wii-U can bring gaming back to variety like in SNES days im all for wii-U. drop my ps3 like hot potato for up-grade HD ol school sidescrolling games such as R-TYPE,EINHANDLER,GRADIUS,G-DA RIS,METAL SLUG,CONTRA.

FPS games extremely boring now days.

Abdou234235d ago

Neither the WiiU or it's Games can beat PS3/360 any time of the year.

Lol that doesn't mean anything.

PopRocks3594236d ago (Edited 4236d ago )

It only means nothing when someone disagrees with you.

Every now and again I hear someone say how bad the Wii U launch is. Now someone says the opposite and suddenly it "doesn't matter."

So not only do you acknowledge that it's a stronger launch lineup, you're backpedaling on what you said before.

EDIT: So your only argument then is that having a stronger launch lineup doesn't matter. My, my, aren't we logical.

One of the most important factors for a game console to sell to core gamers is games. This comparison basically suggests that the Wii U trumps its prior competition and the only viable argument you have is that 'doesn't matter.'

I suppose the next thing you're going to tell me is that it would not matter if Nintendo offered an online service on-par or superior to Xbox Live for free.

bothebo4236d ago

Lol? When did I every say that the Wii U launch line up was strong? I think you should reread the title and consider what is actually being compared. Come back to me when you've done that.

HammadTheBeast4236d ago

PS2 had the best launch lineup of all time.

Where are your gods now?
Come at me bro.
This is why it is irrelevant.

WeskerChildReborned4236d ago

I mostly can't wait for AC3, Batman AC, ZombiU, and Aliens Colonial Marines.

CommonSense4236d ago

you'd hope launching a this-gen system 7 years late that you'd have a "better" lineup. lol

but...aren't half of them ports of games we've had for years?

i realize "better" is an opinion...this opinion just sucks.

torchic4236d ago

I agree. not a great article.

I also think the article assumes that we all thought the 360 and PS3 launch line-ups were fantastic.

Sgt_Slaughter4235d ago (Edited 4235d ago )

And the PS3 and 360 also had ports from other systems at launch, so there goes your argument out the window.

CommonSense4235d ago

actually, it doesn't. because those "ports" were still upgrades from the previous gen. these are side grades from the current gen.

so there goes your smugness out the window.

Sgt_Slaughter4235d ago

Sidegrades? You haven't even played them yet and can judge them already? And I'm the smug one!

AngelicIceDiamond4236d ago

All power to Nintendo.

Now the writer. Allot of Ports huh. Ever considered they were transitioning from old to brand new consoles back then. With a lot of devs still supporting PS2 software. Hmm, apparently not.

Xbox's Preservation Step Sets A Much-Needed Example, Especially For Nintendo

Ahh yes the good old game preservation of saving all your games to a removable hhd on the Xbox 360, taking it round your mates house, setting up multiple tvs to
Be met with “save data corrupted, please re download”

Or how about removing 360 games
From the store

Nice one ☝️

Zeref3d ago

It's better than what Nintendo and Playstation is doing. It might not be perfect but at least they are TRYING. Unlike the others.

DarXyde3d ago

Trying? Take off the blinders for a moment, mate.

1. A failure to preserve games is just that: a failure to preserve games. Don't try to sugarcoat it: NO ONE is doing it properly. Better than awful is nothing to write home about.

2. At the time of this comment, isn't it the case that you need an internet connection to play Xbox games even if you buy physical discs that are hardly in circulation anymore? I don't have a Series X and I can't verify, but I think that is correct. I'm fairly certain you can at least play PS5 games at version 1.0 (not much of a win really when many games require day one patches). I think Microsoft's all digital, licensing approach is by far more aggressive than anyone else's. They really try to push you to game pass where you lose your entire library by umm.... Skipping a month of payments.

I don't think anyone is doing it right whatsoever. Don't get me started on Nintendo, who goes after anyone looking to preserve their games better than they ever would with extreme litigation.

Don't be a simp for any of these companies. Get it together.

PhillyDonJawn3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

@DarX never speak on Xbox again. You lost all credibility with your internet connection comment. Smh you have 0 clue and misinformed yet speaking on something you don't no squat about.

Einhander19723d ago

What has Sony done exactly? You guys keep deflecting to Sony but I am not actually seeing any results, and ai am certain nothing that you can come up with even comes close to what Microsoft has done and what they have tried and failed to do, like tie all your disks to your account on xbone.

Microsoft removed their whole indie section when they moved to the xbone because they were going to only allow games on the service that came from a publisher, id@xbox started after xbone launched and it only exists because Sony embraced indie and Microsoft was forced to cancel their plans and reverse course.

And every single game that was part of games for windows live including disk games (I have gta 4 on disk that won't work) so hundreds of games that use that DRM no longer work unless the company themselves patched it out which of course very few did.

MrBaskerville3d ago

Not trying. Tried. they killed of the backcomp program years ago. They set something up again, but sounds like it's more of an attempt to save the current library on whatever they are planning next. With luck they save everything and more, but let's see. I could see them killing off parts of the OG xbox and 360 libraries. Can't imagine that they would allow us to play Forza 5-7 in the future.

With that said, I do like what they've done and really wish they could have done more.

Is that why Hellblade 2 is digital only?

Zeref3d ago

Just because it's digital only doesn't mean you can't preserve it. Just put it on an external and you have the exact same functionality of what a disc does.

MrNinosan3d ago

Guess you're trolling, but if you actually think that's how it works, I'd recommend buying some braincells.

mkis0073d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Volitile vs nonvolitile data. A disc will not corrupt either. A drive can be corrupted.

Einhander19724d ago

This is just a scammy PR move to distract from the fact they are going digital only and trying to push streaming and subscriptions only.

No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft.

Without discs there is no preservation, preservation can't be done by the rights holders it can only be done by the consumers, anything else is a lie.

Zeref3d ago

Do you know you can put your games on an external and preserve them that way? There are no benefits to discs. ZERO. Idk why some of you are still obsessed with them.

DarXyde3d ago

Because games like Persona 5 exist. It's STILL V1.00. On Playstation, that's a win because 1.00 is installed on the disc—no need to download anything.

If a game does not require any updates, it's all on the disc.

Extremely low bar in the modern era, of course. It's not much of a win by any stretch.

But for now, physical media does have a purpose, at least on Playstation.

Einhander19723d ago

That is factually not how game licensing works, try plugging your hard drive into someone else xbox, It's not going to work, and it won't work if the licensing servers ever go down.

Einhander19723d ago

Anyone remember games for windows live.

I have around a dozen games, some on Steam itself that will not work because Microsoft shut off the licensing servers.

BehindTheRows3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

I do. I STILL have games (Gears of War being the big one) I cannot access because Games for Windows LIVE is total garbage and no one has held Microsoft accountable.

Zeref3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership.

Chevalier3d ago

"You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership."

Damn how many times do people got to explain your idiocy to you? You can take a copy of Persona 5 like someone used as an example and play that game on ANY console WITHOUT logging in which means I can lend the game to a friend without internet and they can play my game. Can you lend your hard drive to anyone without logging in for them to play? NOPE. That is a huge difference and if you think otherwise then sorry you're an idiot.

Tacoboto3d ago

"No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft."

Ubisoft is literally erasing games people bought from their libraries... My PS1-3 discs are useless on modern hardware. Nintendo's re-published and resold almost their entire Wii U library, and the eShop is completely dead with no BC mechanism in the Switch software. Microsoft publishes everything they make today day one on Steam and Xbox/Windows. Sony only brings to PC the titles they think you might want some years later and Nintendo won't even design a functional long-lasting joystick.

You're absolutely trolling and not serious if you think Microsoft today is the worst offender.

shinoff21833d ago

Yay steam

Not everyone fks with computers though. The disc is still the best way as a console player. Period.

crazyCoconuts3d ago

Only time will tell, but for from someone like me suspecting that Xbox is trying to gracefully exit the console market, that "forward compatibility" team is trying to get Xbox games playing on Windows PCs. I mean, it's nice that they're not planning on exiting with a "enjoy your games while the hardware still works" message, so that's nice. They still have a brand to protect via Microsoft so probably feel obligated to have a better exit strategy.

Xeofate3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

That is not their plan, their plan is to transfer users accounts to the cloud.

Phil Spencer himself said as much a few months back, plans could have changed but I think people are reading way too much into one statement where Phil said he would allow Epic on xbox because he wants to be able to sell xbox games directly on other platforms. Aka, instead of selling Sea of Thives through PSN he wants to have an xbox store to sell his games on PlayStation without giving PlayStation any money.

Again, it's extremely unlikely that Phil plans to put PC on xbox and licensing would prevent them from just giving out other publishers games purchased on xbox copies of thier games on PC, Microsoft does not own their games.

crazyCoconuts2d ago

The thing that doesn't align with the cloud strategy is the giving up on exclusives. You'd still need strong exclusives for cloud streaming - it's still a "platform" , just with a lower upfront hardware investment. I feel like they've learned what PS learned with PSNow long ago. We're not ready to stream games and it's only gonna lose them money to try at this point

FinalFantasyFanatic3d ago

I would love that, I'd buy up some of the Xbox games if they could run on PC, like the Rare Replay, Lost Odyssey and Dead or Alive Ultimate, probably a pipe dream though.
