Top 100 RPGs of All Time #100-90

IGN - We all like to pretend, to make believe, to daydream. When we do, it's usually not about spreadsheets, laundry or homework. No, we dream of becoming heroes, becoming kings, becoming saviors, and doing whatever we like - right or wrong - while we conquer, save and survive harrowing adventures in faraway lands.

No single genre in video games lets us do exactly this - in exactly the way we want - like role-playing games. The Top 100 RPGs of All Time list celebrates the games that we believe most accurately exemplify the tenants of the role-playing game genre: building characters based on experience earned in the game, scaling combat based on the statistics of weapons, armor and abilities, making decisions - good or bad - that impact the game world. These core fundamentals make up the heart and soul of the RPG, and it is with these values as our guide that we present to you IGN's Top 100 RPGs of All Time.

Chrono4238d ago

Final Fantasy VIII deserves a higher rank.

caseh4238d ago

You can't dictate how someone else rates a game in a top 100 otherwise everyone would inevitabley have the same opinions and make such lists common knowledge and therefore, useless.

LightofDarkness4238d ago (Edited 4238d ago )

I disagree, I find it to be a very weak FF, and probably only above the first 3 games because of its superior presentation. The game is a mess. When you consider that it was the game that came right after VII, it was a pretty big disappointment to many. For me, it signified the beginning of FF's decline. Despite many claiming it was Enix's fault, this is the game where it first started going wrong. IX brought things back to a standard, but it didn't progress the series in any way, and from X on it went from bad to worse.

Anyway, there's no point criticising FF games because even XIII has fans that seem to throw tantrums when people say the games aren't as good as other FF games, or even other RPGs. The argument inevitably ends up in "SHUT UP, THAT'S WHY" and nobody is any the wiser.

Intentions4238d ago

-.- I hate it when sites make you click on each one to find out where each game is listed.

humbleopinion4238d ago

And the sad thing is they're going to have 10 such list for each round. I don't even bother with that kind of trash anymore.

doogiebear4238d ago (Edited 4238d ago )

Look up above. See where it says "ign+"? Just click that and thumb it down (metaphorically). That'll show them not to keep trying to fish for hits. I don't care if it is a major publication. IGN is a far cry from being the "journalistic" online magazine it once was.

SirBradders4238d ago

FF8 is the bollox one of the best rpg's of my time my rank would be #2-3 ish and thats my opinion people dont hate please im tired.

GrahamGolden4238d ago

d3 90's good that game dont even deserved to be there but anw.

TheLyonKing4238d ago

Final Fantasy 8 has to be one of the most popular but yet underated rpg's of all time.

The story, I think is unparrarell in any fantasy to date and that includes 7.

^This. THIS!
Stop remaking PS4 games!
Remake PS1 and PS2 games à la FF7R, RE1, Mafia, Half Life style ....
Make Legend of Dragoon, Legacy of Kain etc Remakes happen

darthv7214d ago

Legend of Dragoon... WTH is Sony doing just letting this one squander?

-Foxtrot14d ago

I wonder if their mindset is like “meh we have Final Fantasy what’s the point of our own JRPG”

FinalFantasyFanatic14d ago

@-Foxtrot,
Square-Enix had a long period there where it seems they didn't know what to do with Final Fantasy, I think that time period would have been a good time to revisit their classics and remake them. Now it seems they're going full steam ahead with the franchise, so they have less reason to revisit those older games. I wouldn't mind if they subcontracted them out to other developers, that and I don't trust SE to remake their older games.

Cacabunga14d ago

Simply because i do not think it will succeed.. maybe a bad example but e we got Medievil remake after many years fans have beg asking... result is It flopped hard. Remaking a JRPG is so risky. Only a bunch of hardcore gamers who played the original would buy it. If Sony put even more budget into it then it’s even more risky.

As i suggested before, i think they should start remaking like square did with Star Ocean. Or something similar to Octopath Traveller. Build up some hype and try on higher scale later on..

Terry_B14d ago

Let me tell you about PS1 games that should get a remake actually.

Jumping Flash (As a VR game)
Ridge Racer 1-4 as Ridge Racers 3..just like the pretty perfect PSP RR1.-2 games but with even more content
Xenogears
Cardinal Sin which was full of nice ideas for its time but was plagued by technical limitations
Bushido Blade ^^ just like CS
Bust A Groove.
WWF Attitude. With the same roster, same voices,Only slightly updated gameplay but current gen graphics
Dynasty Warriors..yes the fighting game that was similar to Tekken 2 while it had weapons. As nice as the DW games are..its a shame they never released a new fighting game

And while I am at it.

Thrill Kill ...hell yes.

KyRo14d ago

Ah Thrill Kill, the game that was banned/cancelled but everyone had played 😂 what a throwback!

darthv7214d ago

jumping Flash would make a great VR game. Im actually quite surprised nobody has thought to do that one... even on the indie side for something like the meta quest.

GhostMirror14d ago

Big yes to Jumping Flash! and Ridge Racer revivals. Bushido Blade was cool as well; it was pretty deep and so much different from other fighting games at the time. Einhander was another good non-RPG from Square, which was kind of rare for them in that era.

Didn’t Thrill Kill eventually get re-skinned and released with a Wu-Tang Clan license? 😂

FinalFantasyFanatic14d ago

I miss Ridge Racer so much, give me a new game or at least a collection of the older games! I had a blast playing Ridge Racer PSP on my PS4 a few months back.

I cannot understand the current business practice of remaking games from the previous generation, especially when they are very much playable today and still hold up well, it's even worse when people are willing buying them again. The PS1 generation is so ripe for remakes, I know more than a few people who would clamour for a Xenogears remake, or almost any game from that list.

Ravenkiss14d ago

and Valkyrie Profile Lenneth. They did Star Ocean 1 & 2 R already, VPL should get the same treatment.

Redgrave14d ago

I assume this to mean that you aren't considering the PSP port to be the remake in this statement? Like a remake of that one?

FinalFantasyFanatic14d ago

That version is quite old though, that was 18 years ago, so doing a remake in the vain of Star Ocean might be worth it (I did not think the PSP was that old until I looked it up).

Knightofelemia14d ago

I'd be down for FF8, and Xenogears. But I would also be down for Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. And I wish Namco would get off their ass and remake or remaster the Xenosaga trilogy.

FinalFantasyFanatic14d ago

There's been talk of a Xenosaga trilogy on the proviso that there was enough demand, I hope that actually happens one day.

Why does From Software not do ANYTHING with this franchise... It's so sad... Can't they at least outsource it to someone to try a revival?

Fans Are Begging for a Legend of Dragoon Remake

For some gamers, The Legend of Dragoon is, hands down, the best RPG ever. Isn't it time for a remake or reboot and not just a port?

It never will. The game may have been good, but it was just average at best. The kind of game that is one and done.

DickyD122668d ago

Story was good combat was better than ffvii. Game deserves a REMAKE not a remaster

Cacabunga68d ago

We’ve been asking since ps3

Vx_67d ago (Edited 67d ago )

It was anything but average! The story and characters were highly captivating, the gameplay was enjoyable, and the world was interesting. Fans have been requesting a remake for quite some time. I revisited the game last year and found myself completely immersed in it once again. The PS1 had numerous beautiful classic JRPGs that truly deserve remakes.

FinalFantasyFanatic68d ago

I'm happy with the PS Classics port, but if they did, I'd like a port/remaster of Legend of Legaia as well (please put that on PSN).

FACTUAL evidence68d ago

I was just going to say legend of legaia REALLY needs to get the remake. Also keep the combat the same, and the OST. Legend of legaia a truly a gem. I still have my original ps1 game, mint condition.

FinalFantasyFanatic66d ago

I wish I still had my disc, I really enjoyed that game as a kid, but then the disc disappeared (I'm normally pretty good with my games, so it's strange that it's the only game I've ever lost), I have Legaia 2 still, but it's not as good as the first game, unfortunately. It's surprising the first has never been on PSN when Sony owns the license for the game, they seem content to sit on it and do nothing with it.

Spenok68d ago

We've been begging for one for decades.

Lionsguard68d ago

If any game deserves a remake and to be FINISHED properly is Xenogears.

ManMarmalade68d ago

And Xenosaga. Only had 3 parts but was supposed to have 6.

CrimsonWing6968d ago

Yea but if it does get made please don’t remove the turn-based combat.

If Square Enix can remake FF7, then why not Sony?
Remake these classics, Sony ... not recent games like Until Dawn

darthv7272d ago

Bluepoint would be the perfect studio to tackle this classic.

RaidenBlack72d ago

lets see ... Bluepoint's remakes are great ...but not total reworks like RE2 or FF7
but pretty sure they can come up with a good Remake of Legend of Dragoon

solideagle71d ago

to be fair it's a good game, not a great one. I recently played in on PS5. combat becomes stale after doing the same button skills again and again. I think they will have to overhaul combat like FF VII remake then it will shine. Story was good though!

RaidenBlack71d ago

yea, hence I said Remake not Remaster

porkChop70d ago

Cory Barlog literally said his dream project would be remaking The Legend of Dragoon. If I remember correctly, he's actually pitched it before but Sony refused to greenlight it.

RaidenBlack70d ago (Edited 70d ago )

Damn
I recall Barlog also expressed interest in remaking Silent Hill 1 once ...

XiNatsuDragnel71d ago (Edited 71d ago )

Please please remake this.

jznrpg71d ago

I’d like a remake of this and I want Square to remake Vagrant Story

GoodGuy0971d ago (Edited 71d ago )

Crazy square doesn't do this kind of thing themselves with all their classics. I'd throw lots of money. Thank God we have such great communities as they're always the ones that properly remaster these games.

DrewUniverse70d ago

Porting means rewriting a game's code to run natively on another platform. Many think LoD's release on PS4/5 is a port, but it's actually running on an emulator. Roms are the "game" itself. Both emulators and PC ports use these roms to load the game. The difference? Emulators imitate original hardware, with many of their limitations still in place. It's why some types of modding are difficult or unfeasible. With a native PC port, modding is way easier and the core game runs much more efficiently.
