Sony Avoids PSP's Mistake By Encouraging Fewer Home Console Ports

Gamasutra- The main draw of the PSP, the big promise that was meant to separate it from Nintendo's portables and pull users away from the underpowered Nintendo DS, was that Sony's handheld could deliver console-like experiences on the go.

PSP's console-quality experiences, though, weren't enough to propel the system to the same heights as its competitors in the West -- so why hasn't Sony adjusted its strategy for its new portable, in light of PSP's past difficulties and PS Vita's current struggles?

"Follow what Activision is doing with Call of Duty." .............................. .......really?

XB1_PS44239d ago

Apparently that's what sony wants! +1 for 360.

"A lot of PS Vita's early catalog has so far been made up of console ports -- which may have contributed to the troubles Sony has faced with building momentum for the system so far -- but now the company is strongly recommending against and guiding publishers away from ports".

I don't think Sony knows what it wants the Vita to be. There's no clear vision for the device from them. It's too bad, really. Great potential.

Army_of_Darkness4239d ago (Edited 4239d ago )

The big reason why I don't want a Vita is because it has the exact same games on it that my PS3 already has?! I'm not paying an additional $250 just to play the same games on the go(which I would barely do anyways). I want Vita games to be unique or built exclusively for that system, which I wouldnt be able to find anywhere else(aka Ports).

ddurand14239d ago

which is 100% true.

There have the be familiar games on the platform also, though.

Sithlord-Gamble4239d ago

I know what i want the vita to be ... a portable ps3.
Thats the whole reason i bought it, for a ps3 "experience" on the go.

BlackIceJoe4239d ago

I hope Sony will reevaluate this decision. Because I my self want more console games on my Vita. Because it is nice to be able to play games when I am out. Then when I get back home I can finish off where I left off.

I would love to see Borderlands 2 come out on the Vita this way I could put more time into it.

I also would enjoy seeing games like Elder Scrolls & Fallout come out for the system too.
For me I do not have as much time to play games at home as I did when I was a kid. So being able to play console games on the go is what I want.

Also I just got back a few weeks ago from vacation & it was nice to be able to sit by the beach. Plus be able to play the Vita at the same time. So when I was enjoying the cool breeze I could play with the Vita. But I could not do that with my PS3.

So I hope more console games & new IPs will come out on the Vita.

Xperia_ion4239d ago

People need to stfu about console ports being a bad thing, newsflash!!! Most people have jobs and commute. So having console games on the go is awesome.

Ult iMate4239d ago

And also those games are not ports - they are multiplatform games. A common trend for more than 5 years. Why can't Vita have multiplatform games any other plaform have. Also nothing is wrong whith being able to play PS3 games, when PS3 is not available. It is actualy pretty awesome as you said.

I would kill to have a Way of the Samurai game with a huge budget and modern tech... The first game was one of my greatest joys on PS2 back in the day. And I really hope From Software will do something with Tenchu... I hate that they're just sitting on the IP like it doesn't even exist.

Relientk775d ago

Don't play with my feelings like that.

Also, new Tenchu please!

TheColbertinator5d ago

Tenchu would be superb in this day and age. Ninja and samurai games are hot right now and more is better.

Original Final Fantasy 7 - Is it Worth Playing in 2024?

Final Fantasy 7 has come back under the spotlight thanks to the release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, but is it worth replaying the original?

ravens528d ago

Got to Zacks part in 7 Rebirth. Said f it. Finishing my game in 7 og. Just got to part 2 yesterday. I also got Crisis Core... So it'll be a while before I'm back to Rebirth. I just keep thinking about it too smh, want to get back to playing it. Not till I know Zacks story though. I beat 7 og sooooooo long ago, it's crazy going through it again and remembering things.

MrNinosan8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

Got to Zacks part in Rebirth?
You mean you started the game and turned it off?
The game starts with Zack...

ravens528d ago

... Really 🤓 lol. His second part, I've played for 80hrs lmao. <---- PS5 Run time, probably not all game time. You guys know how it goes.

VIK21218d ago (Edited 8d ago )

Did you not ever play the OG FF7? After you recruit Vincent, later in the game, disc 3, return to that basement and look at the pod, there's a whole Zack story that'll trigger as a memory.... it's well hidden in the game and a lot of things regarding Zack are cleared up. FF7 Crisis Core is basically an extend feature of that hidden flashback... It took me years to discover it back then lol

@ravens52
80 hours in Rebirth by doing everything, and you should've reached Zacks story about 5 times 🤣

ravens527d ago

Ye I kno that's y I said not all gameplay time. But also I am very anal when it comes to exploring.

ravens527d ago

Not to mention fighting Titan at his full strength. Hours spent trying still haven't succeeded. Found all 3 ruins but I'ma masochist when it comes to games.

Very much so. Graphically it's dated but the story and the gameplay haven't aged a day. It's still one of my all time favourite RPGs and for me is better than Remake in some ways.

Barlos8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

It always takes me back to Christmas 1997, I got it as a gift and I was blown away when I played it. I couldn't believe games could look that good. The combination of pre rendered backgrounds and FMV really made it stand out. It definitely still has a certain charm that modern games can't replicate.

I can't imagine people will still be talking about Remake and Rebirth in 27 years.

Tapani7d ago

Fully agreed. To me the atmosphere, pacing, gameplay and music are all better than in the remake.

Rebel_Scum8d ago

Yes, play this, skip remake, start rebirth for new players.

I_am_Batman8d ago

Skip Remake? That's terrible advice.

leahcim8d ago

Remake is so amazing, pure FFVII Love, play it on PS5 please! aww the graphics the battles, the music... a dream come true.

Rebel_Scum8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

I disagree Batman
