RPGs typically start with the action set to a simmer. You slowly get to know a handful of characters and the world around them, and -- BOOM! -- some earth-shattering event sends your party on their epic quest. And it should be noted that this trope doesn't just exist in RPGs; Joseph Campbell's monomyth -- the foundation of nearly every fictional adventure -- dictates that stories begin with a "call to action," in which the hero is plucked from humble roots and thrown into mortal danger. Since RPGs largely focus themselves on story, it often takes more than a half-dozen hours before all of the key elements fall into place. Those not used to such leaden pacing often find themselves searching for a game that doesn't make you wade through hours of prologue before diving into action and excitement.
Final Fantasy 7 has come back under the spotlight thanks to the release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, but is it worth replaying the original?
Very much so. Graphically it's dated but the story and the gameplay haven't aged a day. It's still one of my all time favourite RPGs and for me is better than Remake in some ways.

Rise of the ronin sold twice as much as Dragons Dogma 2 this week...but no articles about that. It's only news if a PS exclusive is being outsold.
i agree, i kinda like the short and sweet opening to ff7. but if i am going to be playing an rpg i really dont mind how long the opening/prologue is. im in it for the story! imo the ff8 opening was much better. Though i can definitely see why people would prefer this prologue over ff8s simply because it brings you straight to gameplay/action. But for me if i am playing an rpg, i want as much story as possible. way too many devs focus on fast-paced gameplay and ignore story this gen (ff13)
Final Fantasy 7 set the standard for what a cinematic JRPG were gonna be from here on out. The production values of this game were indicitive of the route Squaresoft wanted to take their franchise.
Yes FF8 & others after this game arguably had better openings, gameplay, graphics, music & story or whatever but none of that would have happened if Final Fantasy 7 did not become the global phenomenon it became & the success it garnered. That is the reason why again i always harp on...love it or hate it there is no denying the impact this game had on future JRPGs.
Hell yes.. Going from the SNES sprites & then seeing FF7 was like the biggest wow factor in any RPG i can remember..
Any one still remember this?

Damn it makes me wish that they remade this on the PS3.
