GameStop preps for next-generation consoles, cuts PS2 from thousands of stores

Though the next generation of gaming consoles is, for the most part, a far-off abstraction, GameStop has already begun its transformation to prepare for the deluge of hardware and software coming from Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft.

SCE America CEO Jack Tretton said in June that quality is more important than getting to market first, stating: "We've never been first, we've never been cheapest, it's about being best."

This Is why I respect Sony but they need to be the first real next gen console out. They can't let MS beat them to it. Otherwise it would just might be a repeat of this gen.

Shok4242d ago

Yeah Jack said that but at the same time I remember Sony saying they wanted to beat Microsoft to the market first this time around.

If what GameStop says is true, it's hard to say which company will be releasing next year and which one wouldn't.

WeskerChildReborned4242d ago

My guess would be Sony since i too heard that they wanted to be first.

velocitygamer4242d ago (Edited 4242d ago )

It has to be the new Xbox. Why would Sony release their one first? They have a lot of big titles that are coming to the PS3 next year: God of War Ascension, Last of Us, Last Guardian (hopefully), GTA V, Metal Gear Solid: GZ and probably even more I missed out.

I really think that they should take their time on the new console, just like they did with the PS3. It might've been the last, might've been the most expensive, but hey, look at the 360 and PS3 now and tell me which one is collecting dust and which one is pumping out the games.

Peppino74242d ago

It most likely will be the new xbox. That doesn't mean ps4 won't be right behind it. However if they miss the holiday season then it won't have a great jumpstart like it could.

ChunkyLover534242d ago

It wouldn't be that hard to guess, Microsoft has all their developers working on next gen games, opened a ton of new studios over the last few years and none of them have released a game for the Xbox 360. The leaked Microsoft documents that state they will release in 2013, the fact that they have the oldest hardware right now, and the fact that they don't have a single game scheduled to release after March of 2013.

I'm not doubting Sony releasing in 2013 as well, but they are still churning out PS3 games and trying to help Vita get some sort of market share, if I were to guess, I'd say they want a new generation to start the least.

black9114242d ago

Sonys only big problem this Gen was

1.Online
2.Price
3.Controller (to Some)

Not Launch Date. But they still managed to sell over 65million and growing.

Qrphe4242d ago

@black 911

Really? It was just the price. If Sony had released a reasonable price for it systems, we would have been seeing all gen what we've been seeing for the PS3 for the past two years as far as sales.

andibandit4241d ago (Edited 4241d ago )

1.Online
2.Price
3.Controller (to Some)
4.Release date(it's easier to attain a customer who is new, than to get a customer to buy a PS3 when he already has a Console).
5.Marketing or rather the lack of it.
6.Horrible launch line up.
7.Hacking incident.

@black 911, yes you may stand corrected.

Bob Dole4241d ago

@black911

How do you say their "only" problem is 3 problems?

Deputydon4241d ago

I vote Sony launches the exact same day as MS. It'll be a fun battle, but Sony really needs some stellar launch titles this time around...

jacksons984241d ago

@black911
Sony's only problem this gen is they don't understand America. They don't understand that in America people buy products based on marketing. You don't need to spend money on a lot of games, you only need 1 or 2 big ones with big marketing budgets.

lastdual4241d ago

I doubt either console will get a big lead next gen.

The 360's early launch clearly helped the system take off, and both MS and Sony know it. As such, smart money says that both new consoles will launch within the same general window (I wouldn't expect them more than 60 days apart).

@-Mika-
give it a rest already, just play video games and relax. who gives a shit which system sells better its about playing games not sales for a company you have no stake in...

-Mika-4242d ago

I care. If you didn't realize. Sales do matter for gamers and the stock holders of the company. For example, Us Vita owners would love more sales for the handheld because then that would mean we'll get more third party support. Same applies to the PS4. That the console I plan on buying so being first and getting alot of sales would mean more third party support and more AAA exclusives from sony.

Also here another example you can relate to. If the original half life or any other valve game in the past sold like crap constantly. Valve would most likely not be around today and you would have never got a sequel to that awesome game. So again sales do matter for us gamers. Please keep that mind before you make another comment like that.

Jockamo4242d ago

People on N4G only care when it's convenient for them...

acedoh4241d ago

Sales don't matter to the average gamers. The core gamers may care but most don't. In the reflection of life it's nothing. Just another thing for people to compete over.

In general I think competition is good because it forces improvements you wouldn't get.

GribbleGrunger4241d ago (Edited 4241d ago )

I agree with Blu_flower in one way but not another. The trouble is that people make it a competition and we end up discussing who outsold who. That is of no consequence whatsoever. However, getting decent sales is. It's not about beating someone, it's about getting enough consoles out there to warrant 3rd party support.

So yes, it doesn't matter which console releases first or which console sells the most, what matters is that it sells well enough to get support. Unfortunately this distinction gets distorted when talking about sales figures and even I sometimes get drawn into it.

On a side note: with the Wiiu getting a bigger storage medium, it's imperative that the 720 does too, otherwise we'll get the same situation we had this gen where 3rd parties hacked huge chunks off their games and then sold them as DLC later. No thanks

In fact, the Wiiu could help lengthen this gen simply because devs have the option of making a 360 version and a PS3 version of any games coming to it (once the ports have run out). Clearly Wiiu devs are going to have to cater for the traditional controller too, so there's no reason for that extra screen with the ports. There are some workarounds as I've mentioned before, but regardless, Wiiu devs have that option

the bastards4242d ago (Edited 4242d ago )

"We've never been first, we've never been cheapest, it's about being best."

...It's that mentality that's going to make sony file for bankruptcy. Investing on vita, gaikai for $380 million, an other $600 console in the making. they need to slow down, they're spending too much on their investments. they need to make back some of that.

what ever happened to the old $299 console days?

Jockamo4242d ago

In my opinion, it's not the release date that made the PS3 not as successful as they had hoped, it's the speed at which devs picked up the technology. I think if they focus on making it easy for the devs, then they can come back easily next gen.

torchic4242d ago (Edited 4242d ago )

@Jockamo

no, only reason Sony didn't dominate this gen was that $599 price tag.

$399 launch price and the PS3 would've been doing PS2 numbers, maybe more

@the bastards

Sony is a high end electronics manufacturer. they only know one thing and that's to build quality electronics, and you pay for what you get. finding a reason for Sony's recent slump of form is difficult, but it definitely isn't because they take their time to make quality goods, and then sell them at high prices. it's been working for them for about two decades, and has now suddenly stopped.

I blame complacency and lack of advertising but yeah it's hard.

Jockamo4241d ago

Yeah that was a pretty arrogant opening price...you're probably right.

tehpees34242d ago

They were first last gen though. If you ignore Dreamcast. Its honestly hard to say when Sony will launch next generation. They are focusing on making Vita successful and making PS3 as profitable as possible.

But yes, it will hurt them if they are last out the gate.

akaakaaka4242d ago (Edited 4242d ago )

in other words be a fool,
dont wait for a new xbox or ps, waste your money and buy the wiiu..
smart inseption, make people think on not waiting for a real next gen console.

plus f&^ what ever Sony or m$ says they lie and lie over and over again...

i will be really mad they they don't really give us a real true amazing new teach.... all this waiting is to much already

vinniects4241d ago

why can't I buy a Wiiu, and wait for the shocker, The Next Xbox and PS4. Nintendo this year, most likely microsoft next year, and sony the year after. I'm a gamer first i'll find a way to spend the money on all three. To many great games exclusive to each company. No need hate on any system. And if you can't afford to get them all, then pick the one or two that you think will be the best for you. only a fool would pass up a system based on graphics alone. base it on the games.

akaakaaka4240d ago

true some people will keep buying ps3 and 360 even once the ps4 is out... that does not change the fact that you could buy old teach "wiiu"

Anon19744242d ago (Edited 4242d ago )

Mika said "They can't let MS beat them to it. Otherwise it would just might be a repeat of this gen."

Honest question, why wouldn't Sony want a repeat of this gen? The PS3 has handily outsold the 360 since they were available head 2 head despite being the most expensive console by far during the worst economic downturn we've seen since the great depression. That's not a secret. I'm sure they would have loved to see a repeat of the PS2 but the way it's going now the PS3 will probably break 100 million in the next 2-3 years.

SuperLupe4242d ago

They're still in last place though 6 years in, no matter how you spin it.
Nobody gets in a competition thinking it's ok to be last. You aim for first place and that's what Sony were aiming for when they launched the PS3. They never would have imagined that things would turn out they way they did.

AAWELLS094241d ago (Edited 4241d ago )

Your smoking some serious crack kid. Sources? Didnt think so.

StreetsofRage4241d ago

This darkrider kid sure does live in lala land. That's how desperate these sony fanboys have gotten. The evidence and facts are clear as day, yet they refuse to believe them and stick with their fantasy world. These kids actually believe in their own lies.

doogiebear4242d ago

I dont care who comes out first, my ps3 has plenty to play until ps 4 releases. So i can wait comfortably. Plus, with graphics like MGS Ground Zeroes, Last of Us, and Watch Dogs, i'm content.

No way i'll buy a microsoft system, with their lack of exclusives, xbox live fee's, and kinect-only support. If they fix those issues, then i'll get both next gen.

Thatguy-3104242d ago

You know hopefully Sony goes last because being first isnt always good. I mean they will be the new kids in the block plus i bet if they were the ones releasing in 14 then it will be in the first few months. It could be that they are very secretive with info on their next console.

Shaman4242d ago

Both companies have "locked" the specs, first chip are going to production late this year and there is no way one will be 2014. I'll believe EA CEO over GS guy any day of the week.

black9114242d ago

Sonys only problem this Gen was

Kran4242d ago

Cause suddenly being first matters.....

(See what I did there YOUTUBERS!!! I HATE YOUR "FIRST" COMMENTS!!!!!)

shutUpAndTakeMyMoney4241d ago

Sorry bUt both are important. Sony already lost a lot of market share compared to ps2 days. After 7 years being first to the market + quality should be there. They are not building a rocket ship.

subtenko4241d ago

What...take the PS2 off the shelves? NOOooo wait until a bit after the PS4 launches at least? That way we can reminisce and be like "Dang, we've come a long way! :D"

But oh well, guess they gotta prepare stuff ahead of time.. About Sony trying to be first; I think it would be interesting to see how it plays out, but I still want them to keep the quality or increase it even more.

Here's to next-gen folks.

Think about it, no date at E3, and the fact that this guy PROBABLY doesn't troll N4G...He could totally be expecting it next year.

Thatguy-3104242d ago

Wii u also might be that console. I mean until this day many still ponder about that system and it has no hype what so ever. So maybe nintendo might release next yr instead.

Wii U is out the end of this year.

GameStop Boss Says Disc Drives Should Be Required On Game Consoles

"It would be great if people had to buy more of the thing," says guy who makes money selling the thing.

XiNatsuDragnel223d ago

Absolutely consoles needs disc drives.

wesnytsfs223d ago

Nah should be optional. Not a PS fan but I like their strategy of selling an optional external optical drive. Its all about Options and this will let everyone get their way. Cheaper for digital only and then you can chose to pay more for the optical drive if that is important to you.

Profchaos222d ago

That's not official yet it's only a rumour

Eonjay222d ago

@Profchaos

But what he describes already exists in the 2 base models. If it is a rumor you can blame Microsoft for really backing it in court but if we are honest we all know it's true.

Profchaos222d ago

@Eonjay I'm not denying the appeal of it I can see it being a useful mechanism for allowing gamers to upgrade as needed however until there's concrete proof and not speculation and remember ms still bases that court submitted document off of the same leaks we see on Reddit, 4chan etc I just can't believe it.

The system would be further opened to exploitation and they would need to release an overpriced drive for consumers to buy for it and sure as they do we will hear complaints over the cost of it

ChasterMies222d ago

Absolutely consoles don’t need disc drives. My house has 2 PS5 digital editions, one since launch. Zero issues with the lack of disc drives. In fact, the digital purchasing lets us all share each other’s games, usually mine, and play the same game at the same time on-line.

shadowT223d ago

Optional drives would be best strategy.

-Foxtrot223d ago

If they did then collectors wouldn’t be getting f***** over with discless collectors editions

jeromeface221d ago

yea they would, discs cost extra... even when you're already paying a premium

-Foxtrot221d ago (Edited 221d ago )

Lmao

We are paying roughly the same now without the discs. There’s literally collectors editions which are roughly in the same price range that have a disc.

I’d rather pay a little more for something physical anyway

RupeeHoarder222d ago

No shock, GameStop is alive because of trading. If they don't have used games on their shelves they are absolutely donezo.

darthv72222d ago

Well of course the GS boss thinks this... that's their bread and butter business. That and funco pops and clothing, though those two were added as a means to supplement the decline in people buying used games or even new games. GS just sucks overall when it comes to gaming. I buy my physical stuff on Amazon or Best Buy.

As for "requiring" disc drives... nah. Not anymore, but i like having them as an option. They had a means back when games actually ran off the discs and were more/less complete. Now they are incomplete and the disc is really an installer with a license to play. If you want to change games you have to take out the disc and put in another. Its more convenient to just use digital. I have been into digital for years now and when the PSPortal comes along i wont even have to go into my game room. I will just play my PS5 from my couch downstairs. I have a bunch of digital installed games to my 5... I'm all set.

Xbox Series X owners can effectively grab a 'free' PlayStation 5 right now

Lightning77250d ago

No thank you? N4G won't stand for this blasphemy!

SF releases next month hopefully that should give ppl incentive to keep their console. I know there's PC you can play there to but not everyone wants to play on PC.

Rockstar250d ago (Edited 250d ago )

@Hyper,

My guess is they love either their piece of plastic, their corporate overlords or gaming on the cheap.

Likely a combination...

itsmebryan250d ago

@hyper
Gamepass and I have a gaming PC so, I can play all the Sony "exclusives " at a higher frame rate and graphical fidelity. Why would I trade my Xbox for PS5.

After adding ABK they will have even more games at a great value.

Lexreborn2250d ago

@bryan

By that same logic what would be the point of having an Xbox? If you have a pc that handles both ps5 and Xbox games you don’t need either.

Rockstar250d ago

@ Lex,

Bringing logic into it?
That's low!

itsmebryan250d ago

@lex
I got my gaming PC last year to replace my old PC and I already had a XSX. It's pretty simple.
So, Zero horizon was disappointing and Spiderman/ miles ( got both for $50)are just ok. I might get R&C when it goes on sale.

Zhipp250d ago

@Hypertension
If I had time for a PS5 I would have bought a PS5 by now. I intend to someday, but at the moment my backlog is too big. Not only would I have to trade in all my games (for pennies on the dollar) and rebuy them for PS5, but Xbox actually finally has some exclusives coming out in the near future that interest me. I'll get a PS5 whenever Naughty Dog's next game comes out, at the latest.

fr0sty250d ago (Edited 250d ago )

@itsme

"I can play SOME the Sony "exclusives " years later. Some of them run better, some run worse." - Fixed

MrNinosan250d ago

@bryan
Your logic is amazing.
Not even close to all the Playstation games is being released on PC, and if they are, it's years past release, and often in a state when PC masterrace people cries anyways.
By logic, you should have a PS5, a PC and maybe a Switch if you're into that crap.

Especially as 100% of the Xbox games is also release on the PC, day and day.

goldwyncq250d ago (Edited 250d ago )

What games? FFXVI is the only true exclusive PS5 has right now and that's going to PC eventually too.

itsmebryan250d ago

@jin-Sakai
What games are you looking forward to this year?

Jin_Sakai250d ago

Spider-Man 2 and there’s plenty of great games to play that released over the years. Can’t say the same for Xbox.

DarXyde250d ago (Edited 250d ago )

There's a pretty decent slate of games coming out this year for all platforms. Armored Core looks great, Mortal Kombat 1 looks great, the info we're getting on Tekken 8 has me thinking it's coming this year. Sea of Stars can't be slept in either. If we're just talking about PlayStation games, Spider-Man 2 and Stellar Blade are expected to release this year and both look great.

I believe jin-sakai has an Xbox Series X (I could be wrong), but I reckon they're interested in those games, along with Starfield. That aside, Mario Wonder, Super Mario RPG, Star Ocean, and Suikoden I and II are all very welcome titles for the rest of the year.

I think no matter what platform you're playing on, there's enough there to generate a backlog.

EDIT: How the hell did I forget Lies of P? 🤡

shinoff2183250d ago

Darxyde

"Starfield. That aside, Mario Wonder, Super Mario RPG, Star Ocean, and Suikoden I and II"

Enough said. That's my game slate for the rest of the year.

DarkkMinion250d ago

That ain't a deal at all. Trading in a beast of a console for that, I don't think so.

Jin_Sakai250d ago

It’s a beast alright. Lol

“Digital Foundry about XSX teraflops advantage : It's kinda all blowing up in the face of Xbox Series X“

Jin_Sakai250d ago

All these “No thank you” comments from duplicate accounts. Lol

Christopher250d ago

I mean, I wouldn't trade in one console for another but instead buy both, prioritizing one over the other based on games I like.

Jin_Sakai250d ago

That would be the obvious choice but some might only be able to afford one or the other. And you have fans who will only support their console of choice regardless.

FinalFantasyFanatic250d ago (Edited 250d ago )

The PS5 is a better deal in the end, I really can't see the appeal of sticking with the Xbox.

DOMination-250d ago

"A good deal for those who want a console with games."

Like what? After all that bravado, the only game you could name was one that isn't out yet (Spider-Man 2)

Don't get me wrong, the XSX lineup in pathetic. But lets not pretend that the PS5 is any better. You can count the number of console exclusives for both on one hand.

If you're looking at games announced with release windows, there's only one console to get as it stands if you want games and it's not the PS5.

Jin_Sakai250d ago

PS5 has one slow year yes but they will start pumping out games soon and everyone knows the quality of their first party games are unmatched.

shinoff2183250d ago

Did the Xbox get any legend of heroes games, alot of jrpg type games skip the Xbox so unless your not into those types of games Xbox isn't a good choice at all. Alot of us from what I see have stuck with sony for the longest because they've had a great jrpg catalogue from 3rd party developers that xbox just can't touch. Those of us that enjoy alot of different games will get both consoles , I bought my series x about two weeks ago for starfield. It will only get used for a game here or there, most likely anything rpg related.

crazyCoconuts250d ago

Hard to tell who are in the Xbox Ambassador program from some of these comments. But for the masses, the console sales numbers are telling us which way the winds are blowing. XBox is in an important/pivotal moment right now imo

I'll stick to keeping both. Gamestop though... seems kind of desperate to take in Series X units. What could they be plotting???

Eonjay250d ago

Almost certainly their plan is to charge obscenely high prices for a used Xbox.

myfathersbastard250d ago

They make pure profit on used consoles. They don’t share any of it. And they’re generally only like $50-$100 cheaper than new.
So they “sell”a PS5, make their small cut from that. Then sell the refurbished Xbox and get to keep all of it. It’s win win. They get a small cut on PS5, and a large cut from the Xbox.

Profchaos250d ago

Could be two fold sell as much base ps5 stick before the slim or pro drop and resell the xsx for those after a starfeild machine

Since then my series X is a legacy machine that I play my old games on and that's it. 3 years ago I really thought from that Xbox showcase we were going to have some great games by now. Instead, it's just been a lot of meh

Chevalier250d ago

Yep. That's why I waited this generation to have a reason to buy the Series X. Got horribly burnt buying the Xbox One because I decided they had games I was interested in then they canceled the games I wanted right after.

Was tempted after they had that great showing awhile back and am glad I waited because it would have collected dust for 2 years otherwise. Couple games out and on the horizon that look pretty good. Might be a good purchase in a couple years.

GameStop CFO to Resign in Latest Executive Departure From Retailer

GameStop’s chief financial officer is resigning, in the latest of several executive departures from the video game retailer.
