Mortal Kombat vs Street Fighter! Who is ahead in all-time sales?

Mortal Kombat and Street fighter have been going at it since the SNES and Genesis days. You bought a SNES for Street Fighter 2 and you bought the Genesis for the blood effect in Mortal Kombat. Back then Nintendo was the clear victor in the Console war. But which Fighting series has prevailed over the years?

Street Fighter has ALOT more hype at tournaments, and it pretty much revolutionized the fighting game genre. Mortal Kombat is all gimmicks! oooh blood and gore! Yeah that can only go so far. Street Fighter has better gameplay mechanics and characters and moves than Mortal Kombat, MK is loved by casuals only a casual would say that MK is better than Street Fighter.

The Arc System's games like: Guilty Gear/Blaz Blue/Persona Arena, etc are WAY better, way more technical, yet user friendly with all of it's deeply stacked mechanics. Just because SF and MK are more well known, doesn't mean they are that great.

On topic: I think Capcom screwed up by mixing SF 2 and SF3 characters in SF4, without factoring the fact that FS 3 characters rely on parry's, are less reliant on fireballs, and are far more technical. It's a struggle using Makoto (for one example) in SF 4 because of the inbalances in the game (like Zangief). Caracters like Blanka and E.Honda also dominate the scene despite too.

I mean, Justin Beaber and Soulja Boy get a lot of sales, but they're talentless compared to real, quality [sometimes independent] artists/musicians.

I'm interested in which games were included in these totals, primarily with Street Fighter. They say they counted Street Fighter X Tekken, did they count Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe and Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter? Did they include all variations of the games (Street Fighter 2/Street Fighter 2 Turbo) or just one variation? Also how many games are there on each side, I hear Mortal Kombat 2011 was the 9th game while Street Fighter 4 came out in 2009 but SF has more spinoffs/remix's. I would have preferred a list stating each game and showing the total sales of the games combined so we can better compare the games against each other based on system/time frame/main series iterations/spinoffs/ect.

Not sure if that is a typo but that is stupid, Streets of Rage has nothing to do with Tekken series. It's like saying SF series including mario has a total sale of 100million.
On a side note; final fight sales could technically be included with the SF series since they are kinda in the same universe now.

The japanese name for Streets of Rage is Bare Knuckle: Ikari no Tekken - I agree with you though, sales for that game should not be included in the total, but I'm pretty sure Tekken would still be on top.

Yeah, completely agree. Tekken would still be on top. Just wanted to laugh at the knowledge of the person who wrote the article.
It's common knowledge to know those are two different franchises made by different companies, or a simple google/wikipedia would have told him that.
But since the person who wrote the article included Nina's side story game. It would only be fair if they included Mortal Kombats side scroller's(Sub Zero game) and Final Fight. Final fight was supposed to be the next street fighter but had a change of name, most of the character has also been included in SF games so it should be ok to count Final Fight as part of SF series.

But to be really honest, I don't really care which series is in the lead with sales. They all doing pretty well for themselves, so that means these series could possibly go on for as long as fans want them to.

I caught that right away, too. Considering there were 3 Streets of Rage games on the Genesis, if these were included in the writer's Tekken total they would certainly sway the numbers quite a bit.

Both Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat are great franchises. Both have great characters, themes, and stories (yes Street Fighter has a storyline). That said, if I had to choose just one I would say Street Fighter. It's a tough call though.

Funny, I never liked Mortal Kombat when I was younger - I've grown up Street Fighter all the way. Although, in recent years, I've made DOA my favourite fighting game. Great character balance and the rock/paper/scissors approach allows you to get out of any situation (like the combo breaker from Killer Instinct - I wish they would make a sequel to that game...)

Street Fighter has been more consistent(quality) through the decades while Mortal Kombat went downhill badly after UMK3, it wasn't until recently with MK9 that Mortal Kombat became relevant again, do you notice the big gap between 3-9. I personally enjoy the Virtua Fighter style of fighting with a pinch of Mortal Kombat & Street Fighter on the side. I love them both though so many memories of playing in the local arcades or sitting in true multiplayer style next to my friends in REAL LIFE! I still have my copy of Mortal Kombat 2 Sega Genesis from when I was little.

Both are awesome games.. I love the bloody gore in MK but the grace of SF.. Someone develop a middle ground arcade fighter.. with elements from both so i can play another

I prefer the look and style of SF. I'm not really into Fighter's anymore as they don't hold my attention and I get bored of them easy.

MK was cool back in the day and the last one for PS3 was actually a good game, but I'm not really into gory , dark death type of stuff. The Lighter colors and move sets in SF always appealed to me more.

Both are as good as it gets in the Genre though.

Mortal Kombat is miles better. I find dark, gritty brutal fighting games more fun in general and it doesn't get much better than MK.

The story and characters are far more interesting as well. Hell, even the MK movie is better than the SF movie. As a matter of fact, the first MK movie could be the first and only movie based off a game that's actually good.

Mortal Kombat simply hasn't had a deep and balanced enough fighting engine to compete with Street Fighter until last year's reboot. There is no argument there, any fighting game fan will tell you so. The old MKs, while fun, were actually pretty basic in terms of gameplay, especially when compared to Super Street Fighter II or King of Fighters 94 (both games released around the same time as MKII/MK3). As a kid, I liked MK more purely for the aesthetic and themes (and the blood, let's be honest); but after playing Street Fighter properly, you know which is the better game. Especially once I played Street Fighter Alpha 2, there was simply NO comparison at that point.

I don't know I grew up with the Tekken and Mortal Kombat combo. So I have better memories of those than Street Fighter, although I respect Street Fighter for what it is, except for those bloody turbo edition things.

Street fighter always had better fighting mechanics then Mortal Kombat, nether realm just added a descent combo list and it took nine years. Moreover most of the combos are automatic on Mortal Combat, ( except for jugglers) hence is the reason why most ppl prefer it. It's easy to play, you could be a child and beat someone in Kombat and never played it before. Street fighter takes years to master. Whereas Kombat moves are like up/ down, back/ back moves. Street fighter has motion moves , half circle, forward slanted down.
