Jason Gambrel writes: I have always been a fan of roleplaying games, going back all the way to the original release of Dragon Warrior (aka Dragon Quest) for the NES. Over time, I have played many more, and one of my absolute favorite game series has always been the Final Fantasy series by Hironobu Sakaguchi. Final Fantasy changed my life, and I would always be looking forward to the next grand installment. For the first ten or so games the series did not disappoint. Each one was be such a significant advancement not only for the genre, but for the industry overall. Any game that uses CGI cutscenes, has end of the world story-lines and even deep character development owes some recognition to Final Fantasy and, more importantly, to director Hironobu Sakaguchi.
It has been 10 years since Xenoblade arrived in the US, we look back at how the game almost never showed up if not for a group of dedicated fans.
I wish The Last Story would make a comeback.I played it years before I got around to Xenoblade. Mainly because of the scalping going on because of Xeno's limited run. It took me a few tries to get into it but once I did I couldn't put it down. A Wii hidden gem for sure.
I wish the Last Story get a Switch remaster or remake. That game deserves a second chance
These JRPGs stand up on their own.
For the Wii’s 15th birthday, here’s a list of 15 Wii games that deserve ports or sequels.
This might just be my favorite jrpg ever (up there with FFX and Lost Odyssey). The soundtrack rivals FFX and Lost Odyssey as one of the best ever (all done by the same guy so no suprise there). Its def the most innovative rpg from Japan. It mixes the strategy of jrpg's with the action and flow of real time combat wrpg's use. No seperate battle screen and its heavily influinced from Gears specifically. It has a cover system and can be used to sneak around and be stealthy. It retains all the weapon leveling and leveling to get powerful/gain skills. It has a nice hub city to explore and do little sidequests/find unique stuff (think DA2). It doesnt have much real sidequests but it has roughly 5 missable chapters (which are amazing and around an hour each) and you can revisit dungeons to level and explore. This game def cuts the fluff. Theres summon circles to easily level up and its pretty straightforward in the dungeons which keeps the pace brisk. It has no annoying stuff and i never want to hurry up because of parts that drag. The story and characters are amazing also, very beautiful moments so far. It has platforming and the little touches like bumping into people, hitting your head on signs, squeezing through narrow alleys or cracks in rock like Uncharted give it a truly cinematic feel like western games. Its a jrpg that cuts all the stuff i hate with a passion from most jrpgs and adds everything great from wrpgs. The combat alone is one of the most enjoyable systems ive ever played (think diablo meets ff12 meets infinite undiscovery). It also looks amazing. Its like they squeezed a 360 game onto the wii lol. It has some jaggies but damn is it pretty.
It does have some slowdown (really bad at a few points) but thats all in the first chapter when it gets hectic and tutorials are going on.
In all this game is a gem. If your evern remotely interested in rpgs buy this as it will become rare fast. The 1st edition has one of the best cases ever and has an art book also. Grab it asap or you'll be sorry. I havent put it down since sun morning.
