David Cage: There are no games for adults, more innovation needed

IncGamers: "We need innovation and new ideas. There are enough games where we shot at people already," says Cage.

True: there are enough shooting games.

abzdine4258d ago

There is ONLY shooting games and they all look the same and play the same and even with same type of controls ! Video Games is not what it was.

BrutallyBlunt4257d ago (Edited 4257d ago )

David Cage keeps forgetting one important thing related to video games, that people want to be entertained. If he thinks gamers care more about the finer details like brushing your teeth in front of a mirror then by all means go ahead.

There seems to now be this conflict and arrogance in gaming that we see with movies. People still love going to the cinema and having balls to the wall action for 90 minutes. They don't have to be Oscar worthy screenplays all the time. Cage is trying to make gaming an art form with emotion but the technogy is still limited. Shooting games are an escape and adults love them too. Call of Duty on the PC has tons of adults and clans. If Cage really wants to go after a more mature and older crowd why is his team not making PC games?

Cage thinks he's more talented and innovative than he actually is. Heavy Rain suffered from poor acting and bad writing. If it were a Hollywood movie adult critics would have ripped it to shreds.

abzdine4257d ago

i think that brushing teeth in front of a mirror in a video game like Heavy Rain is for me more exciting than killing everything that is moving. It's a point of view thing !

Heavy Rain is much more genious than any FPS out there.

DigitalAnalog4257d ago (Edited 4257d ago )

WRONG. The idea that you would easily put words into his mouth is pretty much why your statement doesn't hold value.

Cage doesn't need or want games to be in art form - it already is! He's simply pointing out that devs are not truly recognizing the potential games can bring because they keep resorting to mindless thrills and adrenaline.

How you managed to get from brushing teeth, to oscar and then criticise his writing when it has NOTHING to do with this article or statement is mindboggling. Your attitude is exactly why Assassin's Creed and COD are recurring year-by-year basis; no longer games want to have their own identity. Just go ahead and take a look what they did with Dead Space and Resident Evil because - like you, want to keep them "entertained".

@both of you....

batman AA / AC

every racing game there is

every other jrpg ( yes there are still plenty )

blah blah blah.....the list goes on. just becuase all you choose to see is the long list fo shooting games doesnt mean that is all there is. i dont care much for shooters and there is a loooooooong list of games ive played still

Freakazoid20124258d ago

Wait... You actually think that list of games has adult themes???LMAO.. What adult theme is in LBP?
Rayman origins has adult themes?

Dude I think you fail to understand whats being discussed.
I've played a lot of those as an adult but there is nothing adult themed about 90% of them.

I've played Lego and Mario too, but I wouldnt try to pretend that either has adult themes just because I choose to play them.

Captain Qwark 94258d ago

not all of them are adult themes, but all of them can be enjoyed by an adult and most of them should not be played by kids, all the mature titles are m17+ for a reason

Lvl_up_gamer4258d ago

@ Freakazoid2012

"I've played a lot of those as an adult but there is nothing adult themed about 90% of them."

I disagree. From that list given, I would say 90% DO have an adult theme about them. Actually I only count 2 of those games in which DON'T have an adult theme about them...However they are both questionable ie.

LBP has had some questionable content created by users.

Minecraft is user generated where you can create your own world which....can be heavily adult themed...

iamironman4258d ago

most of those games are not "adult". Yes, they can be enjoyed by adults, but so can pixar movies. other than blood and nudity, what's "mature" about God of War, for example?

That's not the kind of adult theme being spoken about here. What's meant here, I believe, is an emotional connection with the narrative and/or subject matter and/or character.

Something where the main description doesn't include "exciting" "awesome" "visceral" "violent" "sexy"

Because American media sucks ass. When EA was gonna out the name terrorists in medal of honr every one went oh no yet we can hand guns and say shoot kids? Get real people 90% of the games are not for adults, that doesn't mean adults can't enjoy them but you hav to see what David cage s trying to get across

When the game I forgot what was the 4 days in faluijah was announced and had ll the backlash why could we accept the face everything isn't as it seems. You think someone just wakes One day and says to himself I am gonna blow myself and kill innocent people? What drives that person to that extreme level? American soldiers are killing innocent people over seas it's ok but when some one seeks revenge they are labeled as terrorist.

I hope some day a big publisher actually make a game where touchy subjects are brought up we as Americans can not close our eyes and think everything s perfect.

Ask ur self this are you ready for a game about 9/11 or actual events in Afghanistan or Iraq? A American life isn't more important than a kids life in Iraq because a parents pain is the same when an American parent loose their kid in Warner when a innocent kid GTA killed for playing soccer on the street

Ducky4258d ago (Edited 4258d ago )

I don't think changing the name of the enemy would've made MoH any more (or less) mature. It was mostly over the multiplayer too.
Yea, it was a silly thing that the media jumped on, but it also wasn't something that had any real affect on the game... and MoH wasn't really all that mature anyways.

The reason the recent wars are considered taboo is because they are still in progress. Doesn't prevent developers from still developing mature storylines that explore themes about war though, just look at SpecOps:TheLine.

... even movies don't delve too deep into the current conflicts. So it's not really an issue specific to games.

ChunkyLover534258d ago

I'm an adult, I feel like there are a lot of games for adults. Sure, there are a lot of shooters, but there are a lot of other options as well.

Why is this guy making so much noise lately?

paddystan4258d ago

Just because you are an adult when it comes to age doesn't it mean you also are an adult when it comes to your brain.

4258d ago
Freakazoid20124258d ago

Rated M does not mean for adults. In most cases those games appeal to the 15-20 year old crowd and mostly because they feel its what adults do.

There really are no games for real adults. Games with real adult themes.

How would God of Wars sex QTE events appeal to an adult who can get real sex any time they like?

All the swearing in GTA isnt for adults. Most never talk that way. It appeals to young adults because they do not have the freedom to speak any way they like and they think its the "adult" thing to do.

Why would drinking in a game appeal to me when I can go by whatever I want to drink any time I want to? Again its only for kids who cant but want to.

DoomeDx4258d ago

"How would God of Wars sex QTE events appeal to an adult who can get real sex any time they like? "

Like 15-18 year old kids cant do that.. also, ANYTIME (Litterly ANYTIME) they like? I already feel sorry for your wife if you get/got one lol

What exacly DO you consider as a game for adults?

abzdine4258d ago

Games with more complex scenario than just run through the level and hold the R1 button down to kill everyone, something more artistic i will say.

For my case Heavy Rain is the best example of an adult game. Parents are for example more touched by that game than any other teen out there.

SilentNegotiator4258d ago (Edited 4258d ago )

He obviously means MATURE (not "rated M") games AIMED at adults.

edit: oh please, you're just doing your 360 troll duties and attacking playstation posterboys. I'm not new to N4G, buddy, I've seen your work.

ChunkyLover534258d ago

I know what he is talking about, and I still disagree. He is quickly becoming annoying, maybe as annoying as Jaffe was at one point and time. As I said, I'm an adult and I've found many games that are geared towards adults, that isn't to say teens wouldn't enjoy them as well.

The guy is trying to pigeonhole every type of gamer. To say flatly that "There are no games for adults" is just wrong.

jamesensor4258d ago

It's good someone is making noise because it's acceptable to kill people in 1000's of ways but to put some adult content creates a lot of buzz. Quite cynical I might add. Anyways, the Japanese make nice adult oriented content games. Take Rapelay as an example, although the theme is controversial, it had nice graphics and interaction. Its mechanics could be used for a more acceptable theme. Cheers

There's clearly L.A. Noire, BF3 if you compare it to COD but i admit it's hard to think about anything else.

SilentNegotiator4258d ago (Edited 4258d ago )

How is BF3 'more mature' than COD? LOL, these BF3 vs COD semantics get more ridiculous every day.

And LA Noire *SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER* ends with a flamethrower. Yeah, whatta mature game. /s All that build up and they end it like THAT.

JellyJelly4258d ago

LA Noire is definitely a maturely themed game for adults.

@SilentNegotiator - You could ridicule any game by taking details out of their context. It's like saying MGS5 isn't mature because it has a grown man in g-string sneaking around in a box and looking in nudie mags. But that wouldn't be a fair assessment of the game, as isn't your comment about LA Noire.

And you, if anyone, shouldn't bash anyone else for being a fanboy.

SilentNegotiator4257d ago

"Not so! not so!" kettle said to the pot;
"'Tis your own dirty image you see;
For I am so clean – without blemish or blot –
That your blackness is mirrored in me."

Look at my comments. Really look at them. Most of them have to do with the industry. You know why? Because unlike fanboys like you, I care about the industry, and not just if one company does well or one company doesn't.

I have a problem with the way Microsoft conducts business and the way they have changed in recent years, and you don't like that. That doesn't make me a fanboy, One-bubble.

Ruggadagod4258d ago

M rated doesn't mean it's for adult.
E rated doens't mean it's for children.

Heavy Rain was my favorite . Fahrenheit was great too

MadLad515d ago

Eh.

Beyond Two Souls and Detroit were alright for the most part.
They're still making games, so something going decent for them.

Supermassive is definitely beating them in this genre though.

David Cage defends response to allegations of unhealthy studio culture at Quantic Dream

From Eurogamer: "David Cage has responded to allegations of unhealthy studio culture and inappropriate behaviour at Quantic Dream, which he previously described as a "smear campaign".

Published in this month's Edge Magazine, Cage discusses in depth the company culture of the studio and denies a lack of humility in its response to allegations.

"I don't think we had an aggressive attitude," he said. "When you're accused of things that go against everything you believe in, everything you've done in your life, it hurts. It went beyond just attacking the studio culture."

Hasn’t this been a story for years now ? Doesn’t seem like anything changed or they have some very upset workers who lie for a long time ? Seems like it isn’t the latter .

SegaSaturn669617d ago

They should hire Kevin Spacey as a janitor. That would be awesome.

sourOG617d ago

The people who use words like “unhealthy culture” are usually mentally ill themselves. Not saying it’s not true, just sayin.

MadLad617d ago

Interesting comment to make ..

sourOG616d ago

Lol just saying. The last person I want to hear about “healthy culture” from is the people who use those words. Ususlly some kind of identity theory-ism. Commie talk.

jartoon616d ago

Okay... How would a mentally healthy person describe a shitty work environment?

sourOG616d ago

Shitty work environment

sourOG616d ago

I’m getting some disagrees so let me elaborate and try to change your mind.

Do you want to hear about healthy culture from people who celebrate fatness or put kids on puberty blockers as a few examples? That’s the kind of people who say shit like that and they are the most destructive force I’ve ever seen in my life when it comes to culture. Easily.

When you say culture what do you mean? The very core, right? The soul. QD is rotten to the very core and it needs to be replaced. With what? Ask whoever is using that term. I’m sure they have an idea. And I’d bet money their idea of healthy culture is ass backwards and not profitable lol.

Another example. I just saw a Kellogg ad that said “Food Justice for black communities”. They think they can trigger black folks into buying cereal with words like justice lol. They might be right, who knows. I laugh at shit like that though because I see right through these idiots.

TLDR:
Some people use words to communicate. “Shitty work environment”

Some people use words to manipulate. “Unhealthy culture” “Food justice”

Sites like Kotaku have been crapping on Cage for a long time now, to the point where I'm suspicious of if he has earned the bad rep he has. Go read Kotaku's review of Detroit, I recall it being borderline unprofessional.

Heavy Rain 2: Should David Cage Work on a Sequel?

Cage has confessed he has no plans for Heavy Rain 2, but fans have been quite vocal about their love for the game. Perhaps now that the PlayStation 5 is revolutionising the gaming landscape, we might get a proper sequel to one of the best games David Cage has ever made.

If he did it’ll probably be toned way down.

Ninver959d ago

No! Leave the IP alone. It's a classic.

NecrumOddBoy959d ago

No need. Heavy Rain was incredible as it was. Detroit Become Human was the next evolution. I do think they should continue with a new story but perhaps something less dark drama. I think it would be really cool to do something lighter with humor. The fantasy demo they showed off was pretty cool. If Kara became a full game, that would be great too!

smashman98959d ago

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Detroit become Human the full game for kara

NecrumOddBoy959d ago (Edited 959d ago )

Yes. Kara became Detroit. Also the job interview trailer demo back in 2007/8 became Heavy Rain. There was also a video about an actor who was portraying a dark sorcerer. I think that could be something too. I was saying since Kara did become a game, then their newer demo trailer could have too.

smashman98959d ago

Oh ok I misunderstood. I see what u meant now.

Muigi959d ago

Lol I’m actually replaying that now love this and Detroit. Doesn’t need a sequel imo.

No. One of the most boring games I’ve played.
