DLC: How developers should and shouldn’t do it

Brady Ruiters from ITF Gaming writes: So recently, as you all may have heard; BioWare explained that day one DLC makes business sense and in addition to that, it’s what gamers want. I don’t know which gamers they might be referring to but I sure as hell don’t appreciate what they’re doing.

One word : CDProjektRed

They know how to do proper DLC

Kin23g4265d ago

For me, it's ME2:Lair of The Shadow Broker DLC. I've played several great DLCs, but this one was just exceptional in every single way. It's the perfect example of how DLCs should be IMHO. It was two times better than the main game itself. And the ending was just brilliant. It delivered some of the video games' finest moments I've ever seen.

Xof4264d ago

Not... really. They've said themselves that their DLC model is very, very hard to do and can really only work under certain circumstances. And even then, gamers more critical than I could point out the fact that CDR's DLC could easily be classified as "content/optimization that should have been part of the game from day 1."

The simple fact of the matter is that there are an overwhelming number examples of universally bad DLC, but zero examples of universally good DLC.

The only "DLC" I can really point to and call it universally good isn't really DLC at all--I'm talking, of course, about the new wave of "bite-size" digital games, stuff like Journey and Bastion are the most recognizable examples of this, but it all began with Insomniac releasing some standalone Ratchet and Clank DLC.

DasTier4265d ago

Hmmn Lost and damned was awesome as was undead nightmare, but some of the other RDR DLC's "Legends & Killers" were a complete dud.

ITFGaming4265d ago

I was a big fan of Undead Nightmare.

CrimsonessCross4265d ago (Edited 4265d ago )

LOL! It might make "business" sense for Day 1 DLC, but it doesn't make for happy customers, in addition to making "common" sense.

It's what gamers want? DAY ONE DLC?!?!
Let's hope they beat or play the game for a month at least with the way people do things.

And yeah I have no idea who they're referring to...I am not paying jack crap for Day one DLC that probably should have been on the disc in the beginning. Cosmetic stuff I can see happening but that is content BEFORE RELEASE that should have been put into the release of the game...

I understand that it can depend on who it is and what content it is and I could go on and on about that, but Day one DLC...Just doesn't seem right.

http://n4g.com/news/1055857...

And now I see why our games need fixes and patches aand everything. They try to finish the game ASAP so they can decide what they want to do with their DLC after people eat the game up.

MoonConquistador4265d ago

Well said crimsoness. If they want to offer optional DLC on day one like the ability to upgrade all stats to save you building up over time (Tiger Woods golf) then fair enough, that's for people with more money than sense and a lack of patience.

But when it comes to story lines that add something to the story (assassins creed) then its ridiculous.

Whilst we are on the subject, I hate the fact some trophies are patched into the game which then show on your trophy list, even if you had no intention of buying it. DLC trophies should be patched in when you buy the DLC (Motorstorm Pacific Rift)

ITFGaming4265d ago

That's actually extremely well said. It kind of forces you to download additional in order to finish off the trophy hunt.

CrimsonessCross4264d ago (Edited 4264d ago )

Thank you MoonConquistador. :D Well said right back at you! :)

Yeah, I remember that crap. I think or have seen lots of games doing it the way you said about buying the DLC and adding them into the achieve/trophy list (well, as I've seen on the 360, I don't know about PS3). If you're a completionist of the core game and DLC is released and messes everything up...it's irritating.

And at least you helped me clear it up and understood the direction I was taking my comment in :) my mind branches off in so many directions sometimes and it can be taken in different ways depending on how view people see it.

Repeating myself a little
It depends on the game, what the DLC gives (how much content), how much it is, what company is behind it and so much more, but in no way should DAY1 DLC be made before it can be bought and shipped around the release date; it is something that should be shipped with the game.
The disc-locked DLC as well is insanely effed up as well..."here let's put some DLC on the disc to save them a download time and having to put it up on the marketplace!"....uhmmmNO.

The AC2 (the extra segments) DLC was a poor excuse to squeeze money out of people. Never bought the AC2 "DLC" either.

STOP LEAVING COMPLETE CONTENT OUT OF YOUR GAMES AT LAUNCH! >.<!
Dlc plans are fine, of course...Day1 Dlc though is too soon.

You left out The Darkness games bring those back

fan_of_gaming11d ago

The head of Nightdive Studios has posted that The Darkness is on their list of games they want to do, so hopefully something comes from that

Yi-Long11d ago

Little Big Planet 1 and 2 deserve a mention, IMO.

Good call on Motorstorm, a game released 2 gens ago but still looks and feels so good. Motorstorm 2 and Motorstorm RC were gems as well. They followed up the Motorstorm games with the brilliant Driveclub, which still manages to put modern racing games to shame. Imagine closing down a studio as talented as that ... (!) Incredible.

A little 'arcade-gem' back then was The Last Guy, a top down 'follow the leader' snake-like game where you had to find and lead survivors to safety during an alien invasion, on terrible looking 'Google-earth' maps. Graphics were poor, even back then, but would love that same gameplay with modern maps and graphics.

Street Fighter 4, once it finally had a full roster, was quite good, but it was always an ugly game, sadly. Imagine bringing that back while using the current SF6 engine.

Good suggestions, I'd be in for

LittleBigPlanet 2
Motorstorm: Pacific Rift
Motorstorm: RC

God damn I love motorstorm so much

At the time I had a low-mid range sony 40” tv, The latency to the controller was waaaay too high, would to play a modern version

In saying that later I got a 3d lg tv and playing the 3d motorstorm in my bedroom with the environment crumbling around the track, was something special, specially compared to what others were playing at the time, will always remember that

Some good choices here and Resistance: Fall of Man is my most wanted PS3 remaster/remake. Not sure about their claim it was Sony's answer to Gears of War though.

CrimsonWing6911d ago

I’d rather have sequels than remakes. Look at Dead Space 1 Remake. Would’ve been cooler if we got a new entry and it failed with sales sealing the fate of a sequel rather than just replay the same game and it fail in sales and we never get a new entry.

Remakes are great for things like PS2 and earlier games to really get a crazy new graphical coat, but I think we should ease up on all these remakes and actually do sequels.

fan_of_gaming11d ago

Yeah for sure, sequels would be ideal. But in the current market environment where many big publishers are risk-averse, I'd rather get a remaster or remake that a developer can do on a budget that will be approved, rather than nothing for an IP.

Inverno11d ago

I rather they remaster and port over to PC and current gen all the games permanently stuck on PS360. Those games don't need remakes, they need to be given a chance to live again outside of their confined consoles and then give a few proper sequels. Like Sleeping Dogs, Motor Storm, LA Noir, should get another entry.

fan_of_gaming11d ago

Yeah I'd be fine with remasters of PS3 games too, they don't have to be remakes.

Ex-Rockstar Dev Finally Explains Why Small Planes Randomly Crashed in GTA San Andreas

Former Rockstar Games Technical Director Obbe Vermeij has finally revealed why some planes would randomly crash in GTA: San Andreas.

Profchaos17d ago

This fly by feature was on the cutting room floor due to the random plane crashes and it's one of those things I'm so thankful made it into the final version as these random fly by and crashes make the world seem more alive on the extremely limited PS2 hardware you needed everything you could possibly get in a open world to convey that feeling.

And accross hundreds of hours of gameplay I probably died around 3 times as a result of these fly by failures but I loved every time it happened

isarai17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

It made the world feel more human, and honestly kinda insane that even today with all these open world games, almost no one can capture that like R* even when compared to their ps2 games

Skuletor16d ago

Lol, I remember those. I vaguely remember dying from one crashing into my car once too.

BioWare Could be Working on More than Just Dragon Age Dreadwolf and Mass Effect 4

Earlier this year, BioWare was hit with layoffs as part of a downsizing of parent company Electronic Arts, but fans have been reassured that the next Mass Effect game hasn’t been impacted. Likewise, Dragon Age: Dreadwolf’s development is still churning along, with BioWare putting it at the forefront of its focus and rumors suggesting that it could launch sometime later this year. Fans might be getting another look at the long-in-development Dragon Age: Dreadwolf at the Summer Game Fest in June.

If the recently posted job offering for a temporary development manager is any indication, BioWare could have yet another surprise up its sleeve for when Mass Effect 4 and Dragon Age: Dreadwolf are nearing completion. This mystery BioWare video game could truly be anything, from another spin-off of its two major properties to something entirely new. All there is to go on at the moment is a vague mention in the job posting, and it might still be some time before BioWare is ready to confirm any new games in its pipeline.

So a studio that spent years on anthem then this dragon age thing is now also working on another ip along with mass effect,

You think they would be worried that there brand has been on 3 major screw ups

Dragon age 3 launched broken with the frostbite engine yes its a good game but you can see in the late game how rough it was

anthem......

Mass effect 4 well that dev team was fired so yeah.....

They should make sure this new dragon age is a goat instead of putting more work on the table

bababooiy21d ago

Bioware today is like 150 poeple i dont see how they are seemingly working on all these projects at the same time.

Michiel198921d ago

Inquisition wasn't broken, it just had some flaws and on the contrary it also had some strengths. If you call inquisition a major screw up then idk what to say.

That said with what happened to the study since then and now, I'm not really confident that their next game will be any good.

just_looken20d ago

If you played it fully to get plat like me back in its novemeber launch window you had that castle with empty area's endgame missions not there or working and a mp that was made around loot box grind like the mass effect mp.

Its hard to explain to those that played it years later after they tossed out the dlc/patch's

Michiel198920d ago

entitled much? I played it at launch too. Why you even platted it if it was a "major screw up"?
It was good enough for you to sink 100 hours in but also a complete fuckup at the same time, make up your mind.
So either you like shitty games or you're just talking out of your ass.

RaidenBlack20d ago

Well just wanna say, Archetype Entertainment is the new BioWare, composed of mainly ex-BioWare vets.
And they're developing Exodus (starring Matthew McConaughey), a new sci-fi RPG (spiritual successor to Mass Effect, dare I say?)

CantThinkOfAUsername21d ago

I hope it's a single player game with Anthem's gameplay mechanics.

Becuzisaid21d ago

They're owned by EA. What makes you think that they wouldn't publish for PS5? Shoot, if your fridge could connect to your bank account EA would try to release it for that if they could!

Double_O_Revan21d ago

How about they focus on those games and not over extend themselves? We don't need another Anthem.

Becuzisaid21d ago

Bioware died after Inquisition (some would even argue after ME3). They are no longer the same company.
