So, Sony first party just out WiiU'd the WiiU.... this is the sort of thing Nintendo should have been doing, but instead Sony were all "Yo, watch this, this is how you use a controller with a screen."

ChunkyLover534265d ago (Edited 4265d ago )

Its nothing new, Nintendo was doing the same thing with the GBA/Gamecube.

The main difference between the Wii U and this, the Wii U has a tablet packaged in with each console, where as the PS3 doesn't have a Vita in every console. So while developers are free to make Wii U games that incorporate a need for the Wii U Gamepad, developers for the PS3 cant do that at all. So you'll see some interesting things, but it wont be necessary things. Its the same way with SmartGlass for the Xbox 360, you wont see anything necessary, but it'll probably have some nice extra thing or two.

victorGma214265d ago (Edited 4265d ago )

I was going to say the same thing, Nintendo did it with Gamecube/GBA. Assymetrical gameplay on the WiiU is different from what we have here in this video. The WiiU's gamepad is more focused on multiplayer (things like Rayman Lengends and some stuff in Nintendo Land).

There is another problem, Vita doesn't have L2/R2 (which is important for games like Fifa, COD etc), so its already impossible to have the same Fifa 13 features on PS3+Vita, but we will see. Maybe they will do something cool.

Also, I believe some people will say "wait, I can have all this with only one system for a much cheaper price".

-Alpha4265d ago

And Dreamcast + VMU had something like it too. God bless the Dreamcast.

DigitalAnalog4265d ago

True, but you can see that SONY is trying to make VITA a very integral part of the PS3. Why do you think they've introduced "cross-buy" with some of their upcoming games? It's also reported that the majority of VITA owners are in fact PS3 owners as well (due to the PSN link I guess). If that's the case, you can definitely see a lot more "cross-play" features that will come along soon.

fr0sty4265d ago

Victor, while it is true that the Wii U has a tablet packed in every console, it also is true that the Vita is cheaper than the Wii U will likely be, and there are already tens of millions of PS3 consoles out there. For those who already own a PS3, Sony just made it cheaper for them to get the same features as Wii U than actually buying a Wii U. This will hurt sales for Nintendo.

darthv724265d ago

the counter point to your statement would be. People dont buy the wii-u to play lbp2. they would buy it for mario, zelda, the usual crop of nintendo exclusives.

10's of millions of ps3's do not automatically amount to vita sales. There would need to be a serious commitment from the developers to put this sort of thing to use.

At least with nintendo, that commitment comes with developing a wii-u game in the first place. Not an after thought like we see here.

impressive as it is, it is still an after thought. Things needed to play this game. PS3, Vita and copy of the game with all current patches. Things needed to play a wii-u game. Wii-u and game.

ChunkyLover534265d ago

@fr0sty
The problem is what I said earlier. Developers cant gamble that a certain percentage of PS3 owners also have a Vita, so they aren't going to make games where its totally necessary to use the Vita integration with the PS3.

That is the main difference, developers can and will take full advantage of the Wii U's Gamepad and make games that require the Gamepad, you wont see that with the Vita/PS3 stuff.

I'm not against the Vita/PS3 stuff, just saying its something different than the Wii U is offering.

@DigitalAnalog
I agree, I like seeing them use the Vita and cross it with PS3 games, I like the "buy the PS3 version get the Vita version free". I said early on that Sony was competing with themselves by trying to sell them both.

Hicken4265d ago

I think it's funny how people dismiss this feature for the PS3/Vita in reference to the WiiU. "Sure, it can do the same thing, but then you have to buy a Vita, which could be the same price as the WiiU, itself."

Ignore that the Vita is also a standalone gaming system with its own library. Ignore that the Vita can be taken away from the PS3 entirely and still be fully functional. Ignore that there are more than 60 million PS3s already out there, so not everybody needs to get both systems to make use of the feature. Ignore the extra processing capability BECAUSE the Vita is a standalone system.

Ignore that the Vita will most assuredly be able to do the same things- and likely even more- with the PS4 when it launches.

Oh, by the way, since there will be WiiU games that use the Wii remotes, using the WiiU pad won't be necessary, either.

Godmars2904265d ago

Still, the Vita costs as much as a WiiU. Even if it is its own separate system.

krisq4265d ago

And you know the price of WiiU from...?

victorGma214265d ago

Probably cheaper than PS3 + PSV + Mem card

boybato4265d ago

goodluck bringing the wiiu around.

-Alpha4265d ago

A lot like the move, this is great in theory, but beyond LBP, let's see how it gets supported. No one's going to buy a $250 controller for LBP DLC, and I'll place my bets that we wont see any core games built with this concept in mind since the market is too fractured on PlayStation for it.

GribbleGrunger4265d ago (Edited 4265d ago )

So people don't already have Vitas and PS3s? Interesting. Luckily, I already have both. But clearly, I'm the only one

-Alpha4265d ago

Did I say that? The market for that is simply a lot more fractured to compare to Wii-U like implementation. It's a risk to make exclusive content, let alone dedicate whole games around touch-screen controllers when you don't include every console with the method of input (which is Nintendo's advantage).

krisq4265d ago

On the other hand, once WiiU get some traction and developers start to build games with second screen capability, it would be a given to bring those features also to PS3 + Vita combo. The cost will be minimal.

GribbleGrunger4265d ago (Edited 4265d ago )

Alpha: But the Wiiu has a standard controller too, so a lot of games are going to be playable with ONLY the standard controller. It's exactly the same situation as the PS3/Vita situation. One has a touch controller but can add standard controllers in as an option while the other has a standard controller but can add touch control in as an option.

PS3/Vita and Wiiu are the same thing. The only big difference is that a lot of people will be able to play a Wiiu experience without having to invest anything other than buying the game (me included) while 60 million others will only have to buy a Vita and the game. The market is much much bigger for devs to offer those types of experiences with the PS3/Vita combo

I'm guessing that at least 2 million people will already have the Vita and PS3 when the Wiiu launches, so devs can offset any losses they may have by offering a simple App that gives the Vita the same feature for those games (exclusives aside of course)

It's actually ironic that we are having this discussion in a thread that's about a PS3 exclusive game that offers you the combo experience. No one can say it won't happen... it just did and so it is also probable that it will keep on happening

Nintendo are moving into a space that is already occupied

Why do you think that in the latest Vita firmware there is the ability to use the Vita as a controller for the PS3? It's already possible on some games so why the need for the firmware update? Because they are sending a signal to the dev community that there is no reason why their Wiiu games can't be on the PS3/Vita too

BrutallyBlunt4265d ago

Alpha is right, how many games are we actually going to see with this funtionality on the Playstation 3 and Vita? Not many. To add even more to the issue is some games will also require the consumer to buy both copies. The Wii U will have the upper hand in support since all systems will come with a Gamepad. It will also most likely cost less than a Playstation 3 and a Vita combo. The lag will be virtually non-existent as well.

http://www.game-modo.com/20...

That will be a total contrast to when the Wii U comes out and how those games will be much more of a seamless experience between the Gamepad and the hardware.

I also have to laugh at those who whine about the negativity that surrounds Sony yet look at their attitude when it comes to other systems and devices that are non-Sony. Little Big Planet has been a great IP and this looks to add to that but let's not be negative towards Nintendo at the same time.

whatever dude

let me guess Pirate:

Wii U = lame.

PSV as a PS3 controller = awesome.

Blankman854265d ago (Edited 4265d ago )

I thought everybody knew that was this was the N4G slogan though.
This is pretty cool though, now the 97 people that own a VITA can do something cool with it

zebramocha4265d ago

Nintendo said not all games would require the wii pad integration so this off set the fact that vita/ps3 combo is not standard.

Blankman854265d ago

Not all but most. How many 3rd party developers are gonna make Ps3/Vita controlled games knowing that A. Only 98 people have a VITA (my brother just bought one) and B. They aren't all ps3 owners?

zebramocha4265d ago

@Ndivhu You missed the point,if it's optional for third parties to integrate the wiiu pad and if they do not incur any cost in integrating ps vita/ps3 combo than the people saying Sony's combo is unnecessary have no backing because it not a requires feature for Nintendo.

Visual Dragon4265d ago

It was a big plus for sony. But many people will see copy cat,but they have the upper hand at the moment if they bundle the vita and the ps3 at the price that the wiiu comes in at that would be a relaunch the system needs to capitalize on the competition. Go sony for this day you out classed you comp.

baodeus4265d ago

What is the point of winning your competitor when u go bankrupt afterward?

Protagonist4265d ago

The extended version of the WiiU ;o)

Gr814265d ago

If that ain't one of the most boring videos I've seen.

I love the whole Wii U = lame.

PSV as a PS3 controller = awesome.

Not only does this ooze 'me too' it is just very gimmicky. Additionally, if someone doesn't own a PS3 or Vita and you want this Wii U imposter, how much will this all cost you?

PirateThom4265d ago

Of course you find it boring, it undermines the entire WiiU gimmick and is doing it before Nintendo even get the console out. Don't know how it's "me too" when it's going to be out before the WiiU.

You bring up cost and don't even know how much the WiiU costs.

Gr814265d ago

You find it soo amazing. I'm willing to bet Wii U will cost less than the PS3/Vita thing..I mean considering the Wii U is so underpowered and all.

Blankman854265d ago

So you're saying it isn't a me too product because they managed to tack it on before the Wii U which was announced last year released? Let me guess, they've been working on this for 3 years now and you have a youtube video and a couple of patents to prove it right?

DigitalRaptor4265d ago (Edited 4265d ago )

@ Arius Dion

The people that don't already have a PS3 or Vita ? Well man, the price is their problem. Doesn't negate what is possible with the PS3/Vita combo.

Personally, I can't wait for WiiU and am always curious to hear more. But you be bitter that Nintendo doesn't have anything as endlessly creative as LBP, and most likely the upcoming Tearaway. It suits you.

@ Ndivhu

"Let me guess, they've been working on this for 3 years now".

No, but the Vita has been in the hands of developers for 2, perhaps 3 years now. The PS3 has been around during that time and the Vita was built to support this type of interactivity, so its certainly feasible. Like you implied though, there are no YouTube videos or patents to prove anything.

GribbleGrunger4265d ago

How can it be me too when the Vita was designed to interact with the PS3 and was demonstrated before the Wiiu was announced?

abzdine4265d ago

i'm blown away !!! i'll buy vita just for this !

An update on the LittleBigPlanet server and online services

Classic LittleBigPlanet servers are to be shut down permanently following hacks.
Sony’s drastic move comes after months of downtime for the older games.

darthv72948d ago

It was fun while it lasted. And some of the user created stuff was a blast to play with.

Snookies12948d ago

Whaaa-? That's crazy. Didn't expect it to be permanently shut down...

Teflon02948d ago

It's still up on PS4, they just shut down the PS3 end because hackers on PS3 can't be stopped and go on the game making announcements that can't be avoided without having to go back to all the old game codes and updating to remove the feature etc. It's one of those sad and garbage things where hackers ruined a good thing. I'm mostly sad about the Vita, I'm not sure if I have my music stages saved to my Vita, meaning they're gone forever if I didn't save them back to it. They were good too :(

Profchaos948d ago (Edited 948d ago )

Have to say I expected them to be permanently shut down problem would be in the underlying server architecture and possibly something like a depricated authentication protocol which has to be replaced that the PS3, PSP and vita can't support which is why they can't be securely restored on those consoles but the PS4 does support it.so lbp3 was restored on that.

Given the attackers were able to breach the server there was obviously a fear of lateral movement once inside their servers so I can't blame them for this and it makes sense despite the huge blow to the community millions of hours spent building that community.

Despite this blow I believe the millions of creations are going to be available via lbp3 and it's capability of backwards compatibility with user generated content so that's something to be thankful for still not a huge consolation to the many players who only own a older console but unfortunately that's the world we live in these games are old the older they get the more insecure the servers get which the company that make them.host them on and the more likely they need to be shut down.
