Crytek cancelled a game that looked similar to Naughty Dog's The Last Of Us

DSOGaming writes: "Crytek’s nanosuit FPS appeared on the PC in 2007. Although it was a graphical masterpiece and was criticized by some PC gamers for its system requirements, it was profidable and made the company realize that it had something good on its hands. But did you know that Crytek was also developing – back in 2008 – a game that looked similar Naughty Dog’s The Last Of Us?"

What??? The cancelled game's concept art looks nothing like The Last Of Us. I get a completely different tone. The only similarities is there is a girl and a guy in the title pic. I get more of a similarity with the Crysis 2 environment concept art than the cancelled game

DrVosknocker4267d ago

I don't think they meant the art looked like The Last of Us, if you read the article they mean the idea behind the game is similar and that someone from the team joined Naughty Dog after it was cancelled, so that they may have shared the concept that turned into The Last of Us.

DigitalAnalog4267d ago (Edited 4267d ago )

I'm afraid that is not the case. If you have read the recent ND interviews, the project immediately started after Uncharted 2. The U2 directors wanted to redefine "storytelling" in videogames - a misinterpreted statement that caused sent the gaming media into a wildfire. The ex-crytek staff must of heard of such a project, and considering the circumstances, may be the very reason why he joined ND in the first place.

lsujester4267d ago

Because no developer ever told a little fib about their development of a game. :rolls eyes:

shoddy4267d ago

Crytek only like shoota.

DrVosknocker4267d ago (Edited 4267d ago )

how can you dumbasses disagree with me since i just summarized the article, I didn't say it was a fact that the guy brought the idea to them and I don't even care, I was just clarifying the title wasn't talking about the graphics/setting. Aparently fanboys can't read. Note the may have and I never said I think this...

MaxXAttaxX4267d ago (Edited 4267d ago )

The Last of Us takes place in a city with infected(zombies) and survivors.

Crytek's game takes place in a forest. Just humans.
Concept art from both games look nothing alike either.

The only real similarity is the man and the girl.

Kin23g4267d ago

Well, Naughty Dog would make better use of it anyway.

humbleopinion4266d ago

An original story about man and a girl in a city with infected.... wait isn't this the general plot of some Resident Evils?

I stopped reading at "Profidable".

DarthJay4267d ago

I only clicked for the pictures.

Last of Us - Takes place mainly in big city. Man and girl. Infected and some survivers.

This game - Takes place in forest. Man and girl. No zombies, just humans.

So what Man and girl?
And also, who cares if its rip off or not. Im not play or buy video games and look if its rip off or not. I buy and play games beucase they are fun.

ProjectDeputy4267d ago

and who said the last of us has zombies ?
Do your research buddy

Knight_Crawler4267d ago

Please provide link where ND confirms zombies in the last of us?

If you can then GTFO.

Irishguy954267d ago (Edited 4267d ago )

If TLoU 'infected' are the walking dead then yes they are zombies. If Naughty Dog manage to stick to the idea of the cordyceps then they SHOULD be dead(yet are still walking). Not just crazy fungus heads

But alas, only an idiot will attempt to make fun of someone who calls TloU infected Zombies. Semantics at best. The serve the same purpose. Horde ~ Bite/end.

ATi_Elite4267d ago (Edited 4267d ago )

"There's a guy and a girl outside being chased"

Looks like 50% of the games ever made!

Actually I get more of a Half Life 2 / Alan Wake vibe.

But like I said a guy and a girl outside being chased is a scene in so many games and Movies that picking out just one is kinda weird. I'm sure everyone else reading this has a different game they could name that looks similar.

LiViNgLeGaCY4267d ago

Yeah I definitely agree with you about the Alan Wake vibe. That's what it kind of reminds me of too.

LackTrue4K4267d ago

Crytek....they are only good at graphics, (just keep making FPS Crytek) and nothing more. Knowing how bad a story they had in Crysis 2, this game will be base on the guy, the small girl and a dog that is voiced by Gilbert Gottfried.

palaeomerus4267d ago

The Crysis 2 story was better than Killzone 2 and 3's.

Kurylo3d4266d ago (Edited 4266d ago )

crysis 1 story was better then crysis 2 story. Crysis 2 was just a slap in the face to anyone who played the original crysis. It cut down on scale, made weaker gameplay, story was cheesy... and just was very dumb all around.

It turned crysis into call of duty and they hoped they would profit off that crap. GARBAGE multiplayer in crysis 2. Least crysis 1 was fun multiplayer.

JellyJelly4267d ago

Looks more similar to Alan Wake imo.

I_LOVE_MYSELF4267d ago

Yes, it has an Alan Wake vibe to it. I can still see the connection to TLOU, though.

bubblebeam4267d ago (Edited 4267d ago )

I was thinking Resistance from the pic straight away. Last of us looks more like destroyed beauty, whereas this looks more gritty.

EDIT: yeh, the other pics gave me an alan wake vibe. speaking of which, i just fully completed it 2 days ago (the writer dlc was the last I needed).

kingdavid4267d ago

Wouldve been probably a generic superhero FPS.

floetry1014267d ago

Aside from the last two pictures, this reminds me of the book/film The Road, more so than The Last of Us. Both draw parallels to The Road, but this looks to take place in a barren forested area similar to the book.

Hard to know why it might have been buried by Crytek (maybe EA thought a Crysis 2 sequel should take precedence over a risky IP proposition), but it's interesting to note that Kuciara joined Naughty Dog. Could have definitely come to an agreement with ND whereby they release something closer to home, set in the city, but with the same initial concept.

TruthSeeker4267d ago

EA not wanting to take a risk was probably exactly what happened.

aviator1894267d ago

that art looks beautiful. I wish it wasn't canned.

The Last Of Us Series Has Remarkable Potential For Spin-Offs

Najam from eXputer writes "It's time fore a new installment in the series, not another pointless remaster."

anast76d ago

They are working on something new. Not to be rude but it is impossibility stupid to think ND next major announcement is going to be a remaster or their next Last of Us entry is going to be another remaster.

AlterRecs73d ago

I think this is in response to them releasing a remaster for the sequel, a game that didn't need a remaster.

Basically a "why did you put out a remaster no one asked for when you have all there options available"

anast73d ago

They remaster is to put out something quick while they are deving new stuff. I don't get how people can be so static.

AlterRecs72d ago

There's no news about a third game being in production, you're just assuming that they're working on something that they aren't

anast72d ago

When they release the news to start the hype-train, you can give me my props then.

DrDoomer76d ago

I want an alternate timeline spin-off, where part 2 never happened.

CrimsonWing6976d ago

They’ve already done Remasters of 1 and 2… what else is there to Remaster?

AlterRecs73d ago

Considering they remastered the first game twice, who knows lol

CrimsonWing6973d ago

That was a Remake. I guess they could do that to 2, but man…. They should wait a couple generations so it can look like a major upgrade.

The Last Of Us Online Devs Celebrate Their Experience With The Canceled Game

The team is sad for losing out on such a great project but celebrates its growth because of spending time on it.

Chocoburger121d ago

All they had to do was make a basic online mode like their previous games. Instead they wanted more money and choose to go live service which makes games worse in my opinion.

What a waste of time and money, what a shame.

seanpitt2376d ago

I can't wait for season 2 so they can kill Joel off in the first 2 episodes!! Then it will be just Abby and Ellies revenge plot!

Something is telling me that this won't happen though because it wouldn't make sense, oh wait

Linzoid120d ago

Not sure why they didn’t just make Factions 2. There was no need to make it a live service.

TLoU Factions was a great addition such a shame they couldn’t be bothered to remaster that for PS5 considering the crazy high price tag of the remaster of a remaster…

anast120d ago

This is something to be celebrated. This studio is smart and they get it, even factions 2 wouldn't've have been worth the time. I am surprised they didn't just remaster the first one though, but actually how popular was Factions?
