Gamers are being “overcharged” for DLC, according to The Witcher 2 dev

Just last month, CD Projekt RED co-founder and joint CEO Marcin Iwinski commented on the unfortunate state of DLC in today's modern game industry as well as his company's belief that DLC should provide a full add-on experience to players paying extra cash rather than force them to pay for something that should have been included on-disc at launch. "Sadly I see the industry trending toward over-exploiting the gamer, and I think this will come back to the publishers that are doing that, and eventually, people will stop buying their stuff," he said.

I love the guys working at CD Projekt RED. Hell I would buy ten copies of The Witcher 2 if I had the money. But seriously, this developer truly obtained my support and respect.

ThanatosDMC4270d ago

I bought 2 since my disk base one wouldnt save itself on steam.

tehpees34270d ago (Edited 4270d ago )

We know we are. Companies are greedy and acting entitled to our cash. They need to stop dictating what we are entitled to. The customer is always right. ALWAYS! No exceptions.

Entitled greed isn't going to fly forever. Ask Capcom and their SF X T flop. Free DLC is a good way to get customers on your side. Good on them. People will keep buying their stuff.

h311rais3r4270d ago

Yea but they don't care cuz YOU keep buying it!!

MysticStrummer4270d ago

Yup. They'll charge what the market bears. People bitch about overpriced dlc and yet enough buy it to ensure the price stays high. By the same token, games with online passes could be boycotted, but they aren't. Paying to play online is another example. At some point gamers have to look in the mirror. Call the companies greedy all you want to, but they won't sell it if you won't buy it.

BuffMordecai4270d ago

A smart consumer minority cannot override a dumb mass market majority.

MadLad4270d ago (Edited 4270d ago )

I am not against dlc by any means. It's a good way for players to expand the games they enjoy, and it's a good way for developers to make extra cash per release. Win-win.

However, I do agree that there is a large disconnect between the quality and quantity of what you get to what you paid for it.

These micro-transactions, despite what many people claim, are just fine. None of it feels forced, and it's there for those who feel it is worth it.

For major pieces of content, however, especially that which expands upon the game's story, people should expect more for their cash, and developers/publishers should be willing to offer more.

vortis4270d ago

LOL @ fail comment.

I was considering buying Saints Row 3's DLC until I saw how much they wanted for a weapon and a costume. I could buy a brand new game from Steam for the price of a weapon and a simple costume. Guess which one I went with?

MadLad4270d ago

And yet another person who can't read, apparently.

Micro-transactions are fine. They are non-essential and only worth it for those who really want to spend the cash for it.

But please, keep agreeing with the points I am making while not actually grasping them at all.

vortis4269d ago

No dude, you're young and you're uninformed.

You don't get my comment at all because you're too busy circle-jerking.

Back in the day, a weapon and costume was unlocked in a game. You didn't pay to unlock minor items in a full priced retail game via microtransactions, the absurdity of using both methods of monetization is proof enough of greed.

In today's gen you're missing out on content that used to be rewarded via simply playing the game. That is, unless you pay extra for it.

I'll break it down for you real slow: Stuff already in the game that's already finished, is locked away until you pay more for it.

Can you grasp that? Can you see why I simply decided to buy a new game instead of paying to unlock something in a game I already paid for?

MadLad4269d ago

Do you get the concept of optional content?

Do you get that not all games offered such content, past or present? Not to mention a game like Saint's Row offers a large amount of said content in the game proper to begin with?

This is stuff made post-release, and is there for those who want to buy it. If it's worth it to you, purchase it. If not, quit bitching just because it isn't free.

I find it hilarious that you look at my comment, decide it's "lol teh failzore herp derp", based, apparently, on the fact that you are self-entitled and don't get the concept of optional content at a set price.

Have a feeling my point is falling on deaf ears. I am sure you are thinking the same thing as far as I go.

So, I'll just leave this conversation on a note that will give me a laugh and you the response that you want -

I have been outwitted, wholely and truly. Please, hold your head up high and enjoy the rest of your day, winner!

But please, respond with whatever cheeky reply you choose. I am not going to be reading it either way.

vortis4269d ago

Just in case someone else does read it, you don't seem to grasp a very BLATANT concept in game design: EVERYTHING THAT ISN'T THE TITLE SCREEN AND END CREDITS IS OPTIONAL!

Do you get that? THQ could make EVERY single custom character part a microtransaction and it would be optional. Just like Capcom stripped already completed characters and put them behind a paywall for Street Fighter X Tekken and Dragon's Dogma. Yes, those characters are optional, but then again EVERY character in a fighting game is optional. Which characters aren't?

Oh hey, guess what EVERY gun in a shooting game other than the default weapons are optional, too. And guess what? Premium games are charging for these extra guns just like F2P titles because in a video game there is no set value for the amount of content you get. EVERYTHING can be made into a microtransaction and made "optional". You're defending an idiotic cause because you don't understand that there is no such thing in a game as non-optional content other than starting the game and watching the credits.

But whatever, there's a reason you only have three bubbles and it's because you're the type who don't understand gaming culture but you come to places like this and preach false testimonies about gaming culture you HAVE NO UNDERSTANDING of whatsoever.

fossilfern4270d ago

" Back when retail games were dominant, we had expansion packs. These were really large chunks of content, which were worth their price"

YES! I have no issues with expansion packs because they were charged accordingly but taking out missions, stages etc and charging like £8 or whatever for something that lasts about 30 minutes is a joke.

Roper3164270d ago

Not me because I refuse to by DLC keys, I have bought a handful of DLC all of which was decent size, FO3 ( picked up GOTY for $30 which had all 5 DLCs), Borderlands and Valkyria Chronicles Behind her blue flame. All was actual content that was actually a add-on and not just locked on the disc.

CDPR CEO: Rockstar, Blizzard & Bethesda Are The World's Top Three [RPG] Developers

CD Projekt RED's CEO Marcin Iwinski crowned Rockstar, Blizzard and Bethesda as the top three [RPG] developers, though one will have to go to make way.

I agree with Rockstar and Bethesda but imo he should have put his own company among these top three like come on now.

naruga2831d ago (Edited 2831d ago )

i disagree....Naughty Dog , FromSoftware and Sony 's Japan Studio or Nintendos internal studios ...these are the top game developers imo ....game developers must be judged on quality not quantity

PS .. i would also add Capcom s former self ..(90s-early 00's) ...Capcom was literally saturated nursery of talents that time

ScorpiusX2831d ago (Edited 2831d ago )

Yet his choice were based on them being independent Studios from the look of the names

@llFloodyll let me clarify none owned by a platform maker , unlike naruga comment which mentions ND & Sony's Japan studio .

IIFloodyII2831d ago (Edited 2831d ago )

@ScorpiusX

None of them are Independent, Rockstar is owned by TakeTwo, Bethesda by Zenimax and Blizzard by Activision-Blizzard.

Voiceofsoi2831d ago

There's two sides to the argument for sure. Naughty Dog and the first party studios definitely go for quality over quantity but as an RPG fan, I have to say quantity is a form of quality. It's not just value for money, it's a representation of the amount of freedom and choice one has in a game, something that linear games can't really offer.

As far as polish goes Nintendo and Sony (including Naughty Dog) are the forerunners, but it's Bethesda, and only Bethesda really, that still attempts to create AAA games with fully cohesive interactive worlds, where you can be whoever you want, go wherever you want, do whatever you want, wherever you want, however you want - attack any NPC, etc., which is why their games seem a lot less "polished". It's a different kind of "quality".

Then there are studios that do their best to find a happy medium between extreme polish and extreme freedom like Rockstar, CD Projeckt Red, and From Software.

I respect all of these developers equally and recognise that they all have their own definition of quality.

ComradeCoffee2831d ago

Why do you put Japan Studio up there? I can't really think of much they have done on there own that has totally panned out. Maybe I'm forgetting something. Mine would probably be ND, Rockstar, and blizzard. Even though not all the games from the three always speak to me I think the quality is of a level you can't really ignore. Bethesda I would say the quality needs to improve on some things, I think CDPR's last game shows that to some extent.

Davemyrose5922831d ago

Yea man no doubt just about to say that!

Kingthrash3602831d ago (Edited 2831d ago )

This is dumb.
Guy just likes open word games then. Bethesda while they put out quality it's, always buggy. I'd put project red and rockstar in my top 5. ND, bungie, and nintendo have put out major high quality games.
>>>>>imo <<<<<

MachuchalBrotha3162831d ago

Nah, Ive definitely enjoyed playing Rockstar, Bethesda and Blizzard games more than anything ND, From Software or Sony japan have put out. Think of the games those companies make and how many hours of your life have gone to them. From GTA, Diablo to Elderscrolls series. 1000hrs.....

_-EDMIX-_2831d ago

errrrr not really.

Naughty Dog might be the only top studio you named.

I like From Software and Sony's Japan Studio, but I would never really call those "top studios" or anything like that.

Rockstar, Bethesda are huge top studios that are not the norm of game development or recognition. MOST game developers won't have that type of appeal or mass fan base.

Bethesda shipped 12 million units of Fallout 4 in a single day.....

Not the norm of a RPG, not even slightly.

Rockstar moved 55 million units of GTAV......again, NOT the norm of game sales, not even a little bit, both did this was ridiculous number of GOTY awards.

You may not like em, sure.....but its pretty insane to really try to downplay their significance in the market.

_-EDMIX-_2831d ago

@IIFloodyII- with Bethesda, yes and no.

The head of the team of Bethesda owns Zenimax...

mark_parch2831d ago

naughty dog are superb at making one type of game ( cimematic single player storys ) but they haven't made a game that people put over 200 hours into like gta or skyrim

DLConspiracy2831d ago

I love Uncharted.. but.. is it really an RPG game? That's what this article is about right?

bouzebbal2831d ago

Read the title first "The World's Top Three [RPG] Developers"..

I personally don't like any of these because i'm not much into occidental RPGs, my top 3 RPG makers are obviously japanese:
Enix
Tri Ace
Level 5

Nathan_Hale532831d ago

@Voiceofsoi

Fallout 4 was very restricted as an RPG. Very shallow leveling, you have a very set path for a story, not much loot, but a great mod system, and ass for DLC.

Naughty Dog not being on here is a crime.

MyDietEqualsGames2831d ago (Edited 2831d ago )

It's his opinion and not one I agree with. Id, Naughty Dog and CDPR are it for me, with Fromsoft moving in and out of each one, depending how I feel at the moment.

MachuchalBrotha3162831d ago

Why is it a crime when it his opinion. Your opinion will certainly always differ from someone elses. Theres no wrong or right answer.

List yours and someone will disagree with your list.

Livecustoms2831d ago

can you read, it says RPG developer

ThyMasterDebater2831d ago

Agreed. Clearly games influence people in different ways in this translate to their opinion.. hence why you shouldn't take opinion pieces as fact.

Utalkin2me2830d ago

@MachuchalBrotha316

Yes, but even opinion you can bring facts into the mix such as average scores of games and such. While it is his opinion Bethesda is on there, their total lifetime average of games is a 76 which doesn't come close to some of the other developers.

Brazz2831d ago

Rockstar and Blizzard are the best. Bethesda is shit, i would take Naughty dogs, Nintendo internal studios or CDPR over Bethesda anyday of the week.

Gaming_Cousin2831d ago

Lol Bethesda is crap. They introduced the stupid DLC skins. they have buggy ass games. Fallout 4 runs like **** on PC. They are giving PC gamers a free Skyrim HD remaster yet the console players have to pay. They're season pass for Fallout 4 was crap.

Lamboomington2831d ago (Edited 2831d ago )

ND is an internal, first party studio. They don't fit the comparison. CDPR is referring very obviously to massive multiplatform devs with huge IPs and that are very successful. They're two very different things. Not to mention it wouldn't make sense for them to say "We want to get to where ND is", unless they're talking specifically about some game design element or character animation or something specific to the game experience.

Blizzard, Bethesda and Rockstar make perfect sense in this comparison. Naughty Dog or any other exclusive studio wouldn't make sense here.

oasdada2831d ago

he is talking about rpg game devs.. hopefully guerrilla games soon?

overrated442831d ago

Well...CD Projekt Red ARE probably the best dev studio out there making RPGs. Why not include yourself among the best when you are considered to be the best by a lot of people?

Garethvk2831d ago (Edited 2831d ago )

I think EA and Activision would argue with this. Especially since one makes the best selling game series of the past decade.

Artemidorus2831d ago

All about the sales yet you don't see a penny.

Garethvk2831d ago

The point is there are two very big publishers that would take severe exception to the list.

Bradk7212831d ago

But they don't make very good games. Just bc ppl flock to them without even thinking first just shows they own a very ignorant fan base. Ppl that don't care to pay for the same exact games over and over. When they do change things it's never for the best. Those 2 companies are known for not listening to their consumers. They don't care about how good their games are...

_-EDMIX-_2831d ago

@Brad- "But they don't make very good games"

Sooooo gamers just buying air orrrr?

overrated442831d ago

Being the "best" and number of sales are not synonymous.

hells_supernova2831d ago

Bethesda no. Their games are showing their age now. While Skyrim was amazing The Witcher beats it in every way. Bethesda needs a new engine.

Rockstar and Blizzard are hard to argue against always delivering quality products.

For me Naughty Dog are there as well. Nintendo should be acknowledged cause their games when made internally are always fantastic.

Brazz2831d ago

can't agree more. To me Bethesda is above the averenge, but certainly not top 3.

Alexious2831d ago

Well, Fallout 4 is still a pretty good game though I agree that The Witcher 3 is superior. But Bethesda made history with some games in the past.

DrJones2830d ago

Alexious

Yes, in the past.

DarkZane2831d ago

There is also the problem that Bethesda games are riddled with bugs and glitches.

_-EDMIX-_2831d ago

Like Witcher 3?

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Sooo why is many love ignoring this games issues? lol

BlackTar1872831d ago

You can't compare the two games when it comes to the glitches. Beth games hold the crown and set the bar too high for anyone but Ubisoft to come close to.

Nathan_Hale532831d ago

@EDMIX

Okay, so a weird, creepy glitch means it is trashed with glitches when Fallout 4 has many game breaking glitches? Originally Witcher 3 had a few glitches and very few game breaking glitches, which are mostly patched out. Fallout 4 is still a mess. Hell, Skyrim and New Vegas are glitchy messes, and I love both of those over F4. Fallout 4 also looks and runs worse on console and PC at times due to not only mediocre optimization, but an old engine that NEEDS an update this next game.

Braxmapoutras2883d ago (Edited 2883d ago )

Unlike Bethesda....in every game they make, they lower the bar...lets hope they will try a bit more for the next Elder Scrolls,game...lazy cashgrabbing liars...they charged more than twice the price of the witcher expansion pass for shitty as$ dlcs with no real substance or care put into them....and they have the nerve to charge 50€ for them...
And they are always buggy and not in the least polished.......

HURRAH FOR CD PROJECT RED!!!
Keep being awesome and honest and you'll get our money again! :-)

Edit:Downvote all you want that's the truth about shitty tactics of lazy Bethesda...the more you support their "efforts" the more shitty games you'll get....skyrim was good oblivion was better and morrowind the best of them all...
As for the guy comparing one of the 3 worst developers around (ubisoft, EA,Activision) with Cdpr is just sad....even if you encountered so many bugs wich I honestly didn't they supported and still support the hell out of the game...the only problem I admittedly had with the witcher on ps4 was with the framerate wich was fixed within a few weeks.Unlike ubishit who stopped supporting Rainbow six siege after less than a year, while the division which was supposed to be the change of an Era for them is just another buggy glitchy mess without any real depth or story...not even gonna bother mentioning the assassin's creed franchise and how it ended up...if you want to keep buying faulty, shitty, buggy, glitchy, unfinished, rushe d games then keep supporting ubisoft noone is gonna stop you and noone cares...the way our gaming industry has ended up filled with unfinished games yet full priced and riddled with microtransactions is to be blamed to people who support these practices and noone else....

And downvote me to oblivion that's not gonna change anything....if you want to vote somehow do it with your wallets. If you believe CDPR didn't deserve your money then don't buy their next products...and the same goes for ubisoft and any other developer out there...
I haven't bought a single game from ubisoft,EA or Activision the last 6 years because I don't like nor support their practices.
As for Bethesda I got burned so bad with fallout that I'm gonna wait for the next game they make to release be reviewed and then maybe I'll buy it cheap if it's worth it.even if it's elder scrolls...

Funny thing, they had a corrupt save issue on PS4 that ruined my 40 hour game....

http://www.gameinformer.com...

This game was JUST AS BAD as Unity if not in some cases worse! Lost an entire game save due to this games bugs. They didn't set crap! If they cared about their community and the industry, they would have not launched Witcher 3 in the state in which it was launched. It was literally unplayable for me and when it was playable, my save was corrupted. Not getting any of their games day 1 ever again, I dealt with that with all their games at launch since Witcher 1, but this was by FAR the worst in regards to bugs.

Sounds like many of you guys basically gave this team a pass yet when Unity launched, it was some outrage, yet Witcher 3 literally launched the same way. With downgrades, bugs, glitches, broken quest and corrupt saves.

SHAME FOR BOTH Ubisoft and CDPR for releasing their games in the state the did. Witcher 3 is funny enough STILL A YEAR LATER RIDDLED with bugs.

Golden_Mud2883d ago

I don't have many of the bugs and glitches in my game as you're claiming.

Mariusmssj2883d ago

Please don't compare Ubisoft with CDPR, even though there is no denying that WT3 released with bugs at least CDPR is actively supporting the game with patches and content, which is something that Ubisoft never does for a single player game. Try and play Unity on the PC, see how well that will go for you.

sleepyhead2883d ago (Edited 2883d ago )

Aaaaaand here we go. Another cdpr article and we got edmix back with his hate comment. Just as the salt_AU guy from gamespot forum.
It's funny that when majority of people love something there's always a vocal minority who love to make situation complex. The game was excellent, waaaaay less buggy than unity lol.

starchild2883d ago

Hmm.. I didn't really have a problem playing either game. AC Unity was somewhat more buggy than The Witcher 3 for me, but nothing gamebreaking or significant. The Witcher 3 was pretty solid for me from day 1. I saw a couple minor glitches with NPCs, but that's about it. I think by the time I got to some of the later quests with bugs they had already been patched out or something. Played both on PC by the way.

_-EDMIX-_2882d ago

@sleepyhead-

"waaaaay less buggy than unity" I wouldn't know to the degree of which is more broken bud. The fact that it comes down to a degree of is enough to say they can be compared. You are not saying its NOT, you are merely saying its "less" "than" sooooo I"m not sure how you are not getting the comparison considering how both titles launched.

For gods sake, some of the bugs ARE THE SAME! They BOTH have missing FACES! lol

"majority of people love something" Thats nice. Was I suppose to base my opinion on my experience with its bugs and brokenness based on peer pressure?

I love the series, but I won't just pretend Witcher 3 launched with roses and perfection. Not when I have a corrupted file TWICE and saw a series of glitches during my sessions. Yet folks again where making it seem as if Unity was the only title to launch in such a condition.

Sorry but both launched a mess and broken, the degree of is irrelevant to me as launching in that state is bad enough, regardless of how much of.

Sorry I'm not jumping for joy after losing a 40 hour game, just to lose another 10 hour game right after, from the same bug. I don't really have the patience to keep replaying a game, hoping it works. Kool for those who didn't get this bug on their game, but for those who did.....you have a right to be upset. I don't butt kiss developers bud, mind you, I've bought the Witcher series day 1 since its released...

Doesn't mean I'm going to get on my knees for them bud. When its THIS bad, I'm going to say something.

http://www.gamefaqs.com/boa...
http://www.gamefaqs.com/boa...
http://techraptor.net/conte...
http://www.gamefaqs.com/boa...

But hey bud "majority of people love something" right bro? /s Don't you think that maybe some had issues with this game evident by the post and videos even Gameinformer's editor had issues with the game, so bad he wrote this.
http://www.gameinformer.com...

I still like the series, I'll still buy games from CDPR, but seriously.. they need to address this issue. Just because I like the game, doesn't mean I'm a sheep and just going to pretend nothing happened. They can do better bud. Stop ignoring those videos and users that had and still have issues with this game...

_-EDMIX-_2882d ago

@IHass- "I don't have many of the bugs and glitches in my game as you're claiming." Thats nice bud...

Not really a claim if you consider you can just google or watch on youtube people's issue with the game like any other game...

@Mariusmssj "Please don't compare Ubisoft with CDPR" just did bud.

I'm sorry but both launched with bugs and glitches evident by the real EVDIENCE online about there issues. ie missing faces and such lol

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

yet

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Sooo yea, please keep ignoring facts if it helps you sleep at night. I got Witcher 3 day 1 and dealt with a series of bugs and glitches and one that ultimately messed my game up TWICE. I'm not the only one, you can merely google the issues yourself bud.

"CDPR is actively supporting the game with patches" So did Unity after it released. Did you think Unity just go zero patches and zero post launch content? They both got post launch support, both got patches.

Both dealt with the whole "downgrade" thing, both launched with buggy, glitchy games. Mind you, I never bought Unity, I only got Witcher 3...
