Team ICO don't make game for the sales, ICO and SOTC were showcases, now that Ueda is leaving there is no need to keep investing in that team anymore, Western Devs can make better games in less time, SCEA and SCEE have done much more than SCEJ could have ever hope...

you do know that if a Trademark is left unused or whatever for a very long period of time they get marked Abandoned right? It's like that in the US at least. All this means is that Sony hasn't used it yet (by US standards), and since they were the exclusive owners of it it doesn't fall under the rules that anyone can buy and register it. Sony will re-register or do a name change.

With the right marketing campaign you can sell anything, you just need to tailor your message to your audience, something Sony has had troubles doing for the longest time.

But really, Sony has reached a wider audience with the ICO collection HD remakes, so with right amount of hype (not too much), they'll sell a good amount of copies. I think Sony is a big fan of the what the Dev team has created, so they're more willing to give them help. If this was another team they'd be out the door long ago.

With sonys financial situation im not surprised. I was actually one of the few who bought ico on ps2. Seeing how sales for these unique games have been hit or miss, i can see how a 3rd game can bee seen as risky.

Santa Monica was brought in to fix and complete the game and that's what they are gonna DO!

Sony letting go "The Last Guardian" title just could be a move determined by the Lawyers to prevent lawsuits from EX Team Ico members or Fumito Ueda who have left. Fumito Ueda is still helping complete the game but is working as a "Freelancer".

The game will be released in 2013!

I'm not understanding why so many people would be so disappointed in a game they know nothing about, has been in development hell which probably means some major coding problems ala NBA Elite, the visionary Fumito Ueda left a long time ago, there has been no news about progress. For all we know that could mean they are figuring out ways to fix it instead of moving forward in actual development.

The worst thing that can happen to anything in development is progress coming to a halt and money being spent on anything other than development. If they changed the name I'm betting this game is no where near the same vision as when development first started with Fumita.

Being a freelancer and a the man in charge of development is vastly different titles mixed with coding problems and the executive producer leaving mixed with 3 years of seeing one trailer (which means they were working on the game years before the trailer even debuted) Sony having to reassure the title is even still being made....yeah that looks like business a usual.

i think the name is being changed, i predicted this to happen it's no longer a project being made by the japan studio. it being made by multiple devs so the whole direction has probably been modified but with some old elements of the previous build. if canceled that would suck but hey on bright side its saves me more money for other games.

I have no doubt the end product would have been fantastic but the trouble for Sony is these games just don't bring in the money. That's not important to us gamers but this isn't the PS2 days where every type of game can exist and people need to accept this change- PS3 doesn't make up as much of the pie any more to allow this type thing. 1. Those that say "this game looked amazing." What drugs are you doing?...this game has not looked ANYTHING...they have never shown us a THING to make anyone think the game could, would, should be awful or amazing...just a trailer with a couple characters running...

2. The team was founded in the late 90's and is responsible for the release of two titles...in ~15 years they have made 2 games...critically acclaimed? sure...financial successes? no...

"The Last Guardian" was not going to be a console mover...period..people who liked the first two games were going to buy it...Sony fanboys were going to buy it because "ZOMG EXCLUSIVE!!" and most people wouldn't look twice at it..

Team Ico isn't Polyphony Digital: There can certainly be arguments made that PD take forever to release games and they never get canceled, but lets be honest...GT games sell by the boatload and make all sorts of money...Sony is a corporation that has to answer to shareholders...they put the clamps on PD and got the game released...whos to say that they didn't do the same thing and only found out that development was near non-existent?...

to be perfectly honest i think the doom and gloom about it being canceled is overblown and that the game is still being made and will be released...but if it is canceled...there is nobody to blame other than Team Ico...

It's a 4 minute video, and while the first 2 mins are slow, the second half shows off more gameplay than most release trailers do, as well as offer a taste of a solid and unique soundtrack. I'm not saying there is a lot of footage out there, but more than enough for people to be excited for, especially from a developer who has come through strong twice before. People get excited over a freaking logo for a sequel nowadays, don't tell me that The Last Guardian isn't packing sufficient content to generate interest.

2. First off, Ico came out in 2001. I'm sure you'll say something like "Oooh, big difference", but if it's not that different then why did you misrepresent the time-frame by rounding the number 2 *up* to 5?

Even if it's two great games in 20 years, what's your point? Is there some kind of scientific study I don't know about that has found a correlation in the time it takes a developer to make a good game and the quality of the final product? Are people supposed to lose interest if a developer doesn't make enough games or quickly enough? Why don't you hop into a forum where people are discussing Half Life and share your reasoning with them, I'm sure they'll agree with you fully.

Also, does a game need to be a console mover to be a success? Shadows of the Colossus sold very well by the way, and was certainly a financial success. Look into it, instead of making up convenient facts. Not everything needs to be COD to make money. Not everything is pitch-black or blinding white.

Keep in mind too, that all these years after the PS2's prime, Shadows of the Colossus continues to be regarded as one of the best games in the console's entire lifecycle. It might be even more well known today than the day it was released. Whether you like the fact or not, it's one of the more important games in recent console history, that has wedged itself firmly into popular gamer-consciousness by providing a satisfying and unique experience that threw a lot of gaming-convention out of the window. If you look carefully (and without the rage-glasses on) at other more recent games, you'll notice that their visual and gameplay aesthetics continue to be pretty influential among other developers. This is the game that was and is brought up most frequently (by a landslide) whenever the old "video games as art" discussion comes up. And you want to attribute interest in the developer to "fanboys". Come on, get a hold of yourself. My point here is that while it's not going to be Halo, The Last Guardian is (or was had it been released within a reasonable time-frame of the announcement) set to move some consoles. It probably already did, when it was announced. I can't tell you how many times I've seen the sentence "I might actually have to buy a PS3 when this drops" on the internet.

3. It looks like your point here is that the (your) expected sales of The Last Guardian can't possibly justify the length of the development time. That's possible, but it presumes that you know even the first thing about how development has moved along at any stage of this process. Like every day since announcement there has been a team plugging away at it. It might be true, and it also might be true that everything has been on hold for a great deal of time since the announcement.

Anyway, you're seriously hating. I don't know why, but you are. Just because you don't understand other people's excitement doesn't mean they're all idiots and you're the only reasonable one. And I doubt you're going to convince anyone who was excited for this game that they were stupid for feeling that way.

1. Yes im going to tell you there isn't sufficient content out there to be excited...there is barely ANYTHING other than people basing their opinions off the studios two previous games...

I didn't round anything...its 2012...Team Ico was founded in the late 90's like 97-98...they didn't realease their FIRST game until about 5 years later...its been a decade or so since then...hence ~15 years they have made 2 games...maybe you should check YOUR facts before you waste the energy responding to me again...

No, there is no study to say what youre trying to say im saying (are you able to follow that?)...im simply saying that this game isn't going to move consoles...and thats a fact...nobody is going to go out and buy a PS3 at this point BECAUSE of this game...just won't happen and deep down you know it...thats my point..and that is why it differs from the best example of a long term development process in Gran Turismo 5...that game took 5+ years to make...but there were MILLIONS of consoles moved early just in anticipation of this game...and millions more moved after the release...The Last Guardian does not have this ability...period..

as for SoC being one of the best games on the PS2...yup, most that played it would agree with you...but ask the average gamer...or casual as many would (incorrectly) call it...and i bet they have never heard of it...or Ico...or TLG...

Nope, youre wrong again (go figure)...i dont care how long a game takes to make if its quality...but my post was looking at things from a business standpoint...as a corporation Sony cannot look at things as a gamer would...there has to be a financial return on your investment...this game has been "in development" for years and all we have is a single trailer...if this was (for example) Polyphony Digital...they get the benefit of the doubt because their history is producing EXTREMELY successful (financially) games in the past that not only move software, but hardware...Team Ico? a history of innovative, emotional games with cult followings...there is a big difference...

Im not hating...what im doing is being objective, which is something that you don't possess the ability to do because you're too emotionally invested in it...

im not trying to convince anyone to not be excited for this game...im trying to show an objectivity from a business standpoint that if the game was canceled (its not) its justifiable from SOny's point of view because they are pouring money into a title that has been absolutely non-existent since its trailer was shown years ago...

nothing has been announced by sony. this site that published this article is dying for hits. So they have to stir up the pot. Nothing has been said about this game, cause if you talk about a game to much it builds up the hype then people are disappointed. I would take everything this site pushed out with a grain of sand.
