1UP - More than a Copycat: PlayStation All-Stars Shows Small Signs of Progress

1UP: "Despite deep similarities to the Smash Bros. series, Sony's arena-based fighting game can still stand on its own merits."

ShinMaster4275d ago

Because every 2D fighter is a Street Fighter rip off as well, right?
How about side-scrolling beat em ups? You remember those?
Did Nintendo copy the concept from 'Sonic the Fighters'?
Does that make them rip offs or no good? Come on now, don't be so narrow minded.

Smash Bros has 'king of the hill' gameplay. It doesn't have PS characters and themes, an MvC-type combo system and KOs by Super moves with no ring-outs like Battle Royale.
The design is different. The characters and stages are different. The gameplay mechanics and rules are different.

There aren't that many popular 4-player brawlers flooding the market like FPSs, Adventure or W/JRPGs do, which is why this game may stand out as a "rip off" to some people.
Sure, it DOES borrow from Smash Bros. It's in the same GENRE. But it has plenty of its own unique implementations to make it its own game.

Games evolve by expanding on pre-existing ideas, game after game.

sikbeta4275d ago

You know how could they have avoided that, by making it 3D instead of 2D, like powerstone, that way the game could have taken seriously, now it has the label of copycat or ripoff until the end

Outside_ofthe_Box4275d ago

^^^ How do you know people wouldn't call it a power stone ripoff or copycat? I'm willing to bet that no matter how this game turned out haters will find anything to say this game is ripoff or copy of something.

ShinMaster4275d ago (Edited 4275d ago )

Power Stone-clone, Smash Bros-clone, Marvel Vs Capcom-clone. It was gonna happen one way or the other.
This game was never safe from the haters and fanboys no matter what approach SuperBot took because of its.... exclusive nature.

live2play4275d ago

i wish they would have copied it more closely

its a good feeling knocking someone off stage with just a small percent of damage

jimbobwahey4275d ago

It's a shame really, all the hands-on previews indicate that PlayStation All-Stars does it's own thing and isn't a direct copycat, but unfortunately all the insecure Nintendo fanchildren still whine about it regardless.

Why get so upset? It's only a game.

Bathyj4275d ago

When a game creates a Genre, its people with no imagination, or high levels of cynicism that write it off as mearly a copy cat.

God, I can remember for years, game magazine writers (I'm sick of the wrongly used term, journalist) couldnt talk about a FPS without referring to it as a Doom-clone.

Is Saints Row or Sleeping Dogs just a GTA-clone?
Is Uncharted just Tombraider with a guy?

Do we really want a handful of genres in gaming, with only one title in each genre?

Rockefellow4275d ago

What's even worse now is the term FPS becoming analogous with Call of Duty. If you bring up ANY shooter to a casual fan, or even your average person, they'll inevitably ask: "Oh, like Call of Duty?"

***"Do we really want a handful of genres in gaming, with only one title in each genre?"***

According to most people, Yes we do.

telekineticmantis4275d ago

Nintendo and their followers always claim originality, Sumo ring.. no Virtua Fighter.. Crossver yeah MVC, Fighters Mega mix, throw in The Outfoxies, and there goes SmashBros. So what's the big deal about this game? Nothing, Go through History everyone takes inspiration.

There are Copycats out there but this game has taken a different approach, it's getting old now..

It wouldn't have mattered, Sony would've rushed it out and left it to die. More so now than before with their focus now being on SP narrative driven AAA games.

CrimsonWing69518d ago

Oh, but somehow Smash Bros. 64 made it work?

It just couldn’t compete with Smash Bros. and it wasn’t a free-to-play game like Multiversus.

PapaBop518d ago

I think it released at the right time. It's just after the success of Smash and Multiversus, it's finally time for a sequel.

spoonard518d ago

I'd be all in on a remake or remaster of the original. I enjoyed it because I didn't sit there and compare every aspect to SSB. I just enjoyed it as it was.

Magatsuhi518d ago

Sony should make part 2 and dump a good amount of money on it. Scrap super only kills and it's bound to succeed.

Father__Merrin518d ago

Yes the power kills spoilt it completely WTH was they thinking you should have hp bar that's it

God of War: Ragnarok Weirdly Makes PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale Canon

God of War: Ragnarok has plenty of fun references to PlayStation history, but now fans have discovered a conversation that calls back to PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale — the crossover fighting game released for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.

Nyxus525d ago

I wouldn't say canon. More like an easter egg.

Deathdeliverer525d ago

That’s interesting. It actually does make it canon lol. He mentioned it in a mainline game. I’d say that’s pretty cool.
