I dont disagree with you, pedrami. The game clearly takes inspiration from SSB, that is undeniable. But, a rip off would imply that the game is in any shape inferior, and that's not necessarily the case. Does it copy the core structure? Yeah, sure. But the way the game plays is fundamentally different, and IMO, this is something you need to try to really understand. I've played the beta a lot, I've talked to a lot of SSB fans, die hard fans, who have agreed that the game is a lot of fun and much more in-depth than SSB. A lot of people in the beta are surprised at how strong of a game this is, regardless of the similarity of the structure.

Not saying one is better than the other, but Superbot have done a good job making the game fun and making it its own thing. If people can't get past the idea of Sony copying the concept, then that's their loss, but I think anyone with a passive interest in Smash or games in general could at least give it a try.

Bayonetta doesn't rip-off God of War. I consider them to play completely different. Bayonetta is a complete carbon copy of Devil May Cry just with a new coat of paint. But Bayonetta's creator is DMC's creator........so can a guy rip himself off?

Everything is influenced by SOMETHING. Very few things today can be completely original in any field. Even DMC wasn't the first 3-D hack n slash, I'm sure. I bet it took alot of influence from a game like Nightmare Creatures. ANd that was influenced by something else.

Super Smash bros is a pretty unique and fun fighting game and imo there aren't enough games like it. The way in which rip-offs are referred to these days is terrible. It's like no one understands how genres have evolved and diversified. I'm sick of this attitude.

Killzone was created by Sony as a competitor to Halo. They are both first-person shooters, but are fundamentally different in gameplay, story, style etc. So Killzone is not a rip-off of Halo, and if you blindly come back at me saying "yes it is", then you are closed minded and actually lack logic.

The same goes for PlayStation All-Stars. The concept and genre (like FPS example) is the same but the execution, style, gameplay and goals are different. So it's not a rip-off per se.

I'm a HUGE Killzone fanatic and I don't see Killzone as a rip-off to Halo at all because it does enough to differentiate itself from Halo and every other shooter on the market.

PS All Stars is different. 3D cartoonish character models fighting on a 2D plane trying to build up super meters for more powerful attacks to vanquish their foes. Backgrounds consist of environments respective to the characters in the game.

SAME thing as SSBB. Killzone does much MUCH more to differentiate itself from Halo than PS All Stars does to differentiate itself from SSBB. Bad analogy.

I would say a univesal trophy system tacked on after the ps3 launch is more a blatant rip off of microsofts achievement system. Sony is known for borrowing whats popular at the time and adding it in. This game, trophys, move are all rip offs of other ideas. Psn when it launched is another blantant rip off of live and sega who came together to create live. Im not sure sony even counted on online play being popular as again it didnt come out till ms made it popular on consoles. First mmo on consoles was ms. First cross platform game with pc and consoles was ms and shadowrun. Ms has innovated so much this gen while sony keeps borrowing. P-100? Looks to borrow, heavily, from Pikmin as well. Sure, there are unique aspects to it, but the fundamentals and core gameplay are there as well.

Furthermore, Kamiya has already stated he hasn't even played PSASBR. I love the idea of ssb but I despise nintendos controllers. I'm glad psabr is coming. I just hope the combat system and overall depth is better them smash at a competitive level. Reasons why are because its the exact same gameplay style (4 players jumping over the screen battling to compete for the number 1 spot) and the exact same method of roster ( mostly first party characters + some third party). I'm going to be honest here, I've seen a lot of footage and the game needs some serious polishing. Its weird because I think the graphics for this game look terrible. The colours look very stale which is weird because PASBR is on the PS3.

I feel it is not a rip-off, a rip off is some cheap knockoff that tries to copy something exactly as it is, like those cheap chinese fake playstation systems (PSX game system things) Playstation All stars is a 2D party brawler with characters and items from every Playstation Universe and generation of consoles, and I feel that is as far as the game goes in terms of similarities with Super Smash Bros. It is much more technical, its probably the best mix of a party brawler and a traditional technical fighting game there is right now. It has some good names in development behind it, very talented people and some very popular tournament fighters aiding development by providing feedback too. The genre wouldnt have existed without Namco and Outfoxies, which was the inspiration for Nintendo when it came to Super Smash Bros, and now Super Smash Bros is the inspiration for Playstation All Stars, there is nothing wrong with that, but neither of the 3 games are exactly like each other, and knowing that the first 2 mentioned are very fun, I have high hopes for Playstation All Stars, of course the Beta is fun and very good, but its all about how great the final product is. I cant wait for it, been so many years since people asked for a playstation game like this.

As for your comment about Sony ripping off Nintendo, the PS Move already had a prototype even before the Wiimote came out. Yeah, Nintendo could have also been working on the Wiimote as long as, or even longer, Sony has, but the fact that Sony has had a PS Move even before the Wii was released makes the "The PS Move is a Wii remote rip-off" argument mute and stupid. Now, as for your lovely Nintendo, they have also "ripped-off" things. One example, DVDs (Sony wasn't the first to use CDs, but I'll be ignorant and only include the Big Three). Nintendo copied the Vectrex by Milton Bradley....it had a analogue stick on it waaaaaaay before the unoriginal Nintendo 64 (which was in last place by 100million consoles or so).
Sony had waaaaay more originality than Nintendo, by releasing a dual analogue stick for PS1 while Nintendo stuck with one useless stick on N64, & then also on GC.
Nintendo COPIED Sega's Powerstone with SSB's. Nintendo copied Sony with motion controls as PS1 had them implemented for Warhawk & a motion tilt controller.

I feel that the same people defending the derivative nature of the video games industry in this instance could very well be the same people consistently complaining about the lack of originality in the games industry, should the situation require them to do so in order to defend their system or developer of choice (and of course, attack the competition).

The game looks solid and Sony has a large roster of characters to please everyone. They seem to have made a reasonable effort to differentiate themselves from SSB which is commendable though I do hope those decisions were made for reasons other than this alone.

The thing is with this guy is that he speaks his mind and he speaks to the fans, even the incredibly stupid ones. Be grateful that someone that has done some great things in the industry is sharing his opinion.

If i recall correctly MANY games tried to copy smash bros & was praised for it.. Viewtiful Joe red rumble, TMNT, Onimusha, & im sure a few others... & Smash bros got its inspiration from a game with similar mechanics as well.. I just cant remember the name of it.. SSB became famous after nintendo did it on N64 & quickly overshadowed the previous game that started it.. Sony is giving what the fans asked for so im not complaining... Had they done it in a unique way that separates it from Nintendos, i would probably be more interested but whatever.. If the game is good, & scores well, im buying it.. Sony has been making too many rage filled M rated titles lately & needs to diversify the games on PS.. PS2 had many different genres & thats why it was so successful.. Last Guardian needs to come out along with more of their platformers & JRPGs so that PS appeals to ALL demographics again.. Theyve been so obsessed with gaining more western appeal that they forgot what made them so good to begin with.... OH & isnt OKAMI a zelda RIP OFF with a dog instead?? Oh ya twilight princess had a canine in it too didnt it? lol

I think it should blatantly obvious to everyone that Sony is trying to cash in on Nintendo's success. It's shouldn't be a surprise that Sony is stealing from Nintendo however, since they have done it more times then I can count in the past. This is just another way for Sony to try to close the door on Nintendo's hardcore gaming market and I honestly think it will bomb.

It's amazing the hoops that people will jump thru to try and make a point.

How anyone can sit there with a straight face and say this isn't a blatant rip off is beyond me. Do I care? No, because I wasn't going to buy it anyway and I bet most of you won't either. We see it time and time again-you'll talk about buying the games and then you don't back them up.

Bringing up DOOM or someother game/genre and then saying "are other FPS's ripoffs..." is absolute nonsense. It's a horrible anology made for damage control. It's a ripoff, plain and simple that more than likely will bomb at retail. If you're a PS fan, by all means enjoy your game, they've been crying for it for years.
