Five Annoying Video Game Characters

Zero1gaming writes:

Gaming is a personal experience. What one person sees as a vast world waiting to be explored, another sees as a lifeless plain with things way too far apart, but there is one thing that all gamers can agree on, stupid annoying characters.

Almost every game and every franchise has at least one character that makes you want to gouge out your own eyes or rip out the HDD of your console and burn it, below you will find a selection of these characters that really grind our gears!

Wow...picking Rinoa over so many other annoying FF characters. Especialy the ones we see in FF13

I found Rinoas personality pretty realistic in FF8, she neve really was clingy over main character Squall for the entire game she was either too busy annoying him over how closed he was emotionaly, focused on her Timber Owl group or torn over Seifer to see if he was the man she actually loved or just lusted after.

Basicaly he character was the reason for Squalls great character development. From a lonely selfish jerk to a brave heoric leader. She's the one who pushed him and kept trying to get through to him. It was great to see the build up and transformation of his character over the course of the discs. The hug you see in Disc 3 when he saves Rinoa from the sorceress memorial place is much more rewarding because of the build up leading to it. Even the final kiss at the end of the game.

I really didn't think there was anything wrong with Rinoa I just wish they had given her more scenes where she appeared stronger instead of breaking down like most typical FF girls.

Godmars2904278d ago (Edited 4278d ago )

What? Vanille literally ties with Rinoa for #3, though after your defense its clear she should have been the only FF character listed. Even Hope was better than her.

Edit:
Ties with her on the guy's list. And while Hope was a lousy character, at least his convoluted revenge sub-plot with Snow kind of made him more relevant to the milk-water story. Rinoa was better than both of them by several degrees, though the general scale doesn't put her high on my fav FF character list.

I mean Waka's higher and that only because John DiMaggo did his voice.

user54670074278d ago (Edited 4278d ago )

Hope was better then Rinoa as a character and Vanille ties to her :O

HarryMasonHerpderp4278d ago (Edited 4278d ago )

Rinoa was a great character, I actually cared about her and all the crap she went through when..

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

she got possessed and Squall had to save her, oh man it was a brilliant and touching scene when they are both lost in space with the oxygen running out.

Also how can you compare her with Vanille?
Final Fantasy XIII was full of dull boring characters not once did I ever get the same feeling in that game as I did with the space scene in FFVIII.

Ares84HU4278d ago

I don't know what this argument is about but when it comes to FF all characters are a tie.

THE most annoying characters ever created can be found in FF. All of them annoy the hell out of me. I couldn't play more than two hours with FF13 because of the annoying and cheese characters. Everything in that game was so damn gay.

gaffyh4278d ago

There were two twins in Infinite Undiscovery that were REALLY annoying. It was actually one of the reasons I stopped playing the game. There were also some annoying kids in Lost Odyssey, but they weren't as bad.

"she neve really was clingy over main character Squall for the entire game she was either too busy *annoying* him. . ."

Like how you tried to redeem her and then ended up calling her annoying. Hell, clinginess is annoying in its own right. Admit it, there is no other way to describe Rinoa.

user54670074278d ago

I didn't call her annoying...I said she annoyed Squall, making fun of him, for being so emotionaly closed. It was a bit of fun on Rinoas part and it was funny how uncomfortable she made Squall

maddfoxx4278d ago

To be fair, you did list some annoying qualities. A lot of people find Rinoa annoying. You even said she was clingy and makes the other characters feel annoying. Those are annoying qualities

I find her annoying because she is very pushy, immature, always throwing fits, always needing to be saved, etc. She has some of the qualities that men hate in women.

crxss4278d ago

i personally loved Rinoa, she was hot and motivates Squall to actually do something, as in the entire FF8 story.

Pozzle4278d ago (Edited 4278d ago )

I agree. One of the things I've always liked about FFVIII is that the main characters are teenagers who (for the most part) act like real teenagers. They make mistakes, they have flaws, they sometimes act immature or annoying, and they often say and do things that teenagers (no, regular PEOPLE) would do. And that's not a bad thing imo. I've played too many RPGs where the teenage characters either act far too old for their age, or speak in bizarre Shakespearean esque dialogue, or just act in ways that no normal person would act.

But FFVIII's characters usually made sense to me. Even when I didn't agree with them, I could usually see where they were coming from, or why they were doing what they were doing. Even when I was yelling at the screen things like "No, Rinoa! The sorceress will kill you if you try to put that bracelet on her!!" I could still understand why she chose to put herself in such a situation. Her motives made sense...even though you could usually see that they would end in failure.

Does Rinoa have her annoying moments? Yes...what person doesn't? Does that make her an annoying character? Not in my opinion. Sure, she does need a lot of saving in FFVIII. But it never seemed pointless to me. I never got the impression she was a damsel in distress just for the sake of being a damsel in distress. She usually got into such situations by either trying to help the team out (and in doing so, biting off more than she can chew) or because more powerful forces put her in that situation (which would then advance the plot). And even though she did need a lot of saving from Squall and the gang, I never really thought she was weak because of it. She kept on fighting and staying strong. Even after all the times she screwed up and/or saw herself as useless. And that made her a pretty cool character imo.

/sorry for the essay

310dodo4278d ago

I found rinoas to be realistic too

oh man how can they pick rinoa!!!?

;D

specialguest4277d ago (Edited 4277d ago )

The character development in FF8 in my opinion was strong. Rinoas' personality from the high points of her character to her petty flaws and the way she interacts with Squall made her realistic.

There are many games where female characters are often portrayed in a cliche-ish way. A sort of flawed way that a typical male would imagine a female character should act like, influenced by pop culture. With Rinoa in FF8, you could easily imagine or even know real girls who have similar personalities as she does.

MRMagoo1234277d ago

I wasnt annoyed by rinoa at all in ff8 i even called my daugher rinoa she is 5 months old now

Knightofelemia4278d ago

I would rather pick Slippy the rod from Star Fox then Rinoa from FF8 she was not as annoying as that damn frog. I actually liked Rinoa I thought she was a better character the Vanille.

DivineAssault 4278d ago

FF13 characters SUCKED! i never felt the emotional ties with them as i did with all of the previous FF games.. Who the F*#^ decided to make the espers turn into motor vehicles?!?!?
Vanille was the most annoying FF character of all time to me.. It wasnt just her voice either.. Rinoa wasnt that bad.. @ least you didnt have to hear the squeaky voice

fan_of_gaming8d ago

The head of Nightdive Studios has posted that The Darkness is on their list of games they want to do, so hopefully something comes from that

Yi-Long8d ago

Little Big Planet 1 and 2 deserve a mention, IMO.

Good call on Motorstorm, a game released 2 gens ago but still looks and feels so good. Motorstorm 2 and Motorstorm RC were gems as well. They followed up the Motorstorm games with the brilliant Driveclub, which still manages to put modern racing games to shame. Imagine closing down a studio as talented as that ... (!) Incredible.

A little 'arcade-gem' back then was The Last Guy, a top down 'follow the leader' snake-like game where you had to find and lead survivors to safety during an alien invasion, on terrible looking 'Google-earth' maps. Graphics were poor, even back then, but would love that same gameplay with modern maps and graphics.

Street Fighter 4, once it finally had a full roster, was quite good, but it was always an ugly game, sadly. Imagine bringing that back while using the current SF6 engine.

fan_of_gaming8d ago

Good suggestions, I'd be in for
LittleBigPlanet
LittleBigPlanet 2
Motorstorm: Pacific Rift
Motorstorm: RC

purple1018d ago

God damn I love motorstorm so much

At the time I had a low-mid range sony 40” tv, The latency to the controller was waaaay too high, would to play a modern version

In saying that later I got a 3d lg tv and playing the 3d motorstorm in my bedroom with the environment crumbling around the track, was something special, specially compared to what others were playing at the time, will always remember that

Skuletor8d ago

Some good choices here and Resistance: Fall of Man is my most wanted PS3 remaster/remake. Not sure about their claim it was Sony's answer to Gears of War though.

CrimsonWing698d ago

I’d rather have sequels than remakes. Look at Dead Space 1 Remake. Would’ve been cooler if we got a new entry and it failed with sales sealing the fate of a sequel rather than just replay the same game and it fail in sales and we never get a new entry.

Remakes are great for things like PS2 and earlier games to really get a crazy new graphical coat, but I think we should ease up on all these remakes and actually do sequels.

fan_of_gaming8d ago

Yeah for sure, sequels would be ideal. But in the current market environment where many big publishers are risk-averse, I'd rather get a remaster or remake that a developer can do on a budget that will be approved, rather than nothing for an IP.

Inverno8d ago

I rather they remaster and port over to PC and current gen all the games permanently stuck on PS360. Those games don't need remakes, they need to be given a chance to live again outside of their confined consoles and then give a few proper sequels. Like Sleeping Dogs, Motor Storm, LA Noir, should get another entry.

fan_of_gaming8d ago

Yeah I'd be fine with remasters of PS3 games too, they don't have to be remakes.

darthv7215d ago

Legend of Dragoon... WTH is Sony doing just letting this one squander?

-Foxtrot15d ago

I wonder if their mindset is like “meh we have Final Fantasy what’s the point of our own JRPG”

FinalFantasyFanatic14d ago

@-Foxtrot,
Square-Enix had a long period there where it seems they didn't know what to do with Final Fantasy, I think that time period would have been a good time to revisit their classics and remake them. Now it seems they're going full steam ahead with the franchise, so they have less reason to revisit those older games. I wouldn't mind if they subcontracted them out to other developers, that and I don't trust SE to remake their older games.

Cacabunga14d ago

Simply because i do not think it will succeed.. maybe a bad example but e we got Medievil remake after many years fans have beg asking... result is It flopped hard. Remaking a JRPG is so risky. Only a bunch of hardcore gamers who played the original would buy it. If Sony put even more budget into it then it’s even more risky.

As i suggested before, i think they should start remaking like square did with Star Ocean. Or something similar to Octopath Traveller. Build up some hype and try on higher scale later on..

Terry_B15d ago

Let me tell you about PS1 games that should get a remake actually.

Jumping Flash (As a VR game)
Ridge Racer 1-4 as Ridge Racers 3..just like the pretty perfect PSP RR1.-2 games but with even more content
Xenogears
Cardinal Sin which was full of nice ideas for its time but was plagued by technical limitations
Bushido Blade ^^ just like CS
Bust A Groove.
WWF Attitude. With the same roster, same voices,Only slightly updated gameplay but current gen graphics
Dynasty Warriors..yes the fighting game that was similar to Tekken 2 while it had weapons. As nice as the DW games are..its a shame they never released a new fighting game

And while I am at it.

Thrill Kill ...hell yes.

KyRo15d ago

Ah Thrill Kill, the game that was banned/cancelled but everyone had played 😂 what a throwback!

darthv7215d ago

jumping Flash would make a great VR game. Im actually quite surprised nobody has thought to do that one... even on the indie side for something like the meta quest.

GhostMirror15d ago

Big yes to Jumping Flash! and Ridge Racer revivals. Bushido Blade was cool as well; it was pretty deep and so much different from other fighting games at the time. Einhander was another good non-RPG from Square, which was kind of rare for them in that era.

Didn’t Thrill Kill eventually get re-skinned and released with a Wu-Tang Clan license? 😂

FinalFantasyFanatic14d ago

I miss Ridge Racer so much, give me a new game or at least a collection of the older games! I had a blast playing Ridge Racer PSP on my PS4 a few months back.

FinalFantasyFanatic14d ago

I cannot understand the current business practice of remaking games from the previous generation, especially when they are very much playable today and still hold up well, it's even worse when people are willing buying them again. The PS1 generation is so ripe for remakes, I know more than a few people who would clamour for a Xenogears remake, or almost any game from that list.

Ravenkiss15d ago

and Valkyrie Profile Lenneth. They did Star Ocean 1 & 2 R already, VPL should get the same treatment.

Redgrave14d ago

I assume this to mean that you aren't considering the PSP port to be the remake in this statement? Like a remake of that one?

FinalFantasyFanatic14d ago

That version is quite old though, that was 18 years ago, so doing a remake in the vain of Star Ocean might be worth it (I did not think the PSP was that old until I looked it up).

Knightofelemia15d ago

I'd be down for FF8, and Xenogears. But I would also be down for Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. And I wish Namco would get off their ass and remake or remaster the Xenosaga trilogy.

FinalFantasyFanatic14d ago

There's been talk of a Xenosaga trilogy on the proviso that there was enough demand, I hope that actually happens one day.

Resident Evil 5 - 15 Years of Being the Most Misunderstood Resident Evil

Resident Evil 5 launched 15 years ago today - and it continues to stand as a stepping stone from the good to the bad.

TheBrainZ44d ago

One of my favourites because of the co-op. Then Resi 6 arrived and the series nosedived further.

Knightofelemia44d ago

I enjoyed the game co-oping with a friend I know the game in solo the AI can be an idiot but RE5 is way better then RE6. I played RE6 with a friend if it wasn't cheap when I got I would have avoided RE6.

thesoftware73044d ago (Edited 44d ago )

5 was excellent, still play Mercs with my brother.
I would love a fully remastered RE:5, with some added, reworked content. The DLC for 5 was also excellent.

6 was awful.

CrimsonWing6944d ago

I never understood why the game was misunderstood. It was a fantastic game at launch and is still fun today to play. It’s as action packed as Resident Evil 4 was, yet that’s regarded a masterpiece 🤷‍♂️

chobit_A5HL3Y44d ago

it was "misunderstood" because they introduced co-op into the franchise at a time when people loved to have fake rage about co-op. like, you could play the game as a solo experience, but people chose to have their bandwagon rage because it was cool at the time lol

-Foxtrot43d ago (Edited 43d ago )

What the hell are you talking about? Fake Rage? Bandwagon? Come on.

You can play it solo but you are forced to carry around a shitty AI partner you have to micro manage. It wasn't as fun solo.

Co-op sucked all the horror, tension and suspense from the game because having a partner covering you was like a safety net. Enemy trying to sneak up on you? No sweat the AI will just automatically lock on, alert you while they shoot first telling you where they are basically.

It was the start of Capcoms fall with the Resident Evil series where it basically become an over the top generic action game which betrayed it's own survival horror roots. Least RE4 had a good blend of both but Capcom just went the wrong way with RE5, especially going off what they were going to do during the RE4.5 beta phase before co-op was added.

franwex43d ago

At least the game was a ton of fun tho. If the game was bad, the outrage would’ve been justified. They simply pivoted for a couple of games. At this point it’s bad because it’s called Resident evil 5? But if was called something else it would’ve been good? Please.

chobit_A5HL3Y42d ago

like i said: fake baby rage and bandwagon hate. res4 wasn't really that scary, either, and was already taking the series into more of an action-oriented direction at the time. 5 was a good game that people fake-hated because of co-op that you didn't even have to play lol hence the fake rage and bandwagon hate. i mean, it obviously did well enough for capcom to go ahead and make 6 the way they did, right? if 5 was so bad, they would have changed what 6 was during development. the difference is that 6 was actually just bad.

people "hate" 5 because res4 was so good, and 5 was just unfortunate enough to be its successor. like i said, 4 wasn't scary, either, and relied more on tension than horror, but it was already more of an action game. if you don't wanna like 5 because it's not scary or whatever- that's fine, but it wasn't meant to be strictly a horror game anymore at that point anyways. the gameplay was a lot faster-paced than 4, so saying that the ai helping you by potentially shooting someone that was sneaking up behind you is a moot point. there were more enemies that were more aggressive, along with newer threats.

5 isn't as good as 4, but it's not a bad game by any stretch.

Tody_ZA18d ago (Edited 18d ago )

What? I always thought RE5 had fake controversy because it was set in South Africa and you shot a bunch of black zombies. I live in South Africa and thought the game was absolutely awesome, played the whole thing co-op with my brother.

@Foxtrot I think you're confusing the garbage Dead Space 3 with Resident Evil 5. Resident Evil 4 was already a hyper action game and had zero fear factor other than the grotesque appearance of some enemies.
