I have read SEVERAL proven studies about how a steady consumption of pornography actually leads to decreased sexual desire as well as making real sex un-satisfying.

Basically what it does it numb you sexaul stimuli.

As far as the gaming goes I have yet to read one convincing study other than the fact we spend billions of man hours a year playing video games instead of being more physically active or even possibly contributing to soceity in some form or fashion.

I dunno. I'm gonna do what I want. Back to watching Debbie does Dallas 2: Volume 4 and playing Dota 2 I guess. :)

I completely agree. Video games happen to be the scapegoat of the decade, just like rock and roll and comic books have been in years past.

If anything's the problem it's the addiction itself whether drugs, gambling or gaming, and addictions usually only come about because of external stress or internal turmoil. A normal person doesn't just wake up saying, "Yup, totally getting addicted to video games and ruining my life." Rather, they retreat due to outside circumstances which could be anything from being bullied, heartbreak or losing a job or loved one.

It's so much easier to blame something inanimate that can't really fight back than blame ourselves for missing the signs, or causing the pain in the first place.

I instantly read professor of psychology at stanford and expected to read some half baked idea full of holes. Reminds me when I was in college and had to sit through lectures. College In general is the most overrated institution I can think of. No real learning goes on there. Disagree with me all you want but this guy and most other professors are full of crap. Go sell your book somewhere else you hack. I can think for myself and don't need your warped point of view to live my life. This guy is seriously out of touch and needs to come down from his Stanford ivory tower more often.

If you don't learn anything in college then you only have yourself to blame. It isn't like elementary or high school where you are basically spoon fed lessons, you are expected to work.

What college really teaches you is how to learn, apparently you didn't.

No college teaches you to cram information and regurgitate it on tests. I learned more on my own than I ever did in college. If you need a professor to tell you what to learn then you need to read more books or watch the discovery/history channel more.

In the first year humanities it's often a case of memorization, but I only took science courses in math, physics and computer science.

In most of my exams after 1st year we were allowed to bring whatever books or notes we wanted because if you just memorized everything it wouldn't get you very far, you had to understand everything in order to solve the problems.

I've believed this theory before even reading this. It's just common sense that over-stimulation by insignificant activities will make any activity less stimulating unable to compete, such as books, and study. Porn along the same vain does the same thing.

It's a regurgitation of the post modern theory of the simulacrum. That in our modern lives we are surrounded by media and simulated experiences, videogames and porn being the ultimate examples. And these images affect our perception of real life and pervert it. Only this theory fails if it cannot be an absolute. If theres even one person who can play gamess and watch pornregularly and still lead a healthy life, like myself and countless others, then this study was a useless waste of time.

Its just another 'expert' trying tomake a name for themselves by demonizing skmething rather than actually doing something to benefit society.

This professor seems to have combined some solid neurobiological facts with some pseudo-academic projections. It is very true that male brains are wired differently. It's very true that the wiring in the brain is subject to changes caused by stimulation throughout the maturation period. However, what he is NOT speaking about are the other aspects that help form that wiring. Cognition is a very important aspect of this process (the ability to KNOW and REASON). The brain wiring process is both passive and active. Which basically means that a young man that consumes too much internet porn can be aware of this a adjust accordingly...unless he becomes addicted. In which case the wiring would then be considered faulty. How is this different from the teenager's endless search for endless search for "cheesecake" model calenders in the 40's, or Playboy and Penthouse of the 80's? Young men like to look at different naked women...PERIOD!!!
In the end, if man's brains are wired to search out that stimulus. That wouldn't change whether it be videogames, porn, movies, sports, etc.
