OUYA's Success and Our Eternal Hankering for New Hardware

GamerZines writes:

Microsoft and Sony have already dropped the ball this coming console generation. Why? Put simply, they’ve waited too long.

Rather than making the most of the momentum their respective consoles have created over the last few years, they’ve waited for the PC to outpace their hardware several fold and even allowed third party developers to come out – like Square Enix, Epic and others – and criticise the console manufacturers’ unwillingness to engage with fans when it comes to the next set of hardware.

So much so that core gamers are willing to grasp onto any promises, no matter how far fetched, with both hands and perhaps more importantly their wallets. Of course we’re talking about the latest overnight Kickstarter success, OUYA.

I wanna see a demo before i pay anything towards OUYA cause for all i know, the games could just be copies of other games.

v1c1ous4304d ago

arent almost all games copies of other games by this time in our generation?

very hard to come up with something unique nowadays since just about everything's been done.

WeskerChildReborned4304d ago

Not like that. I mean how some android games are just copies of games that recently came out.

DA_SHREDDER4304d ago

wanna see a demo? Its gonna be running android, so just turn on your phone. Boom.

I agree whole heartedly. Sony and Microsoft should damn well drop the console that we invested so much in every two or three years or so, so we can buy a whole new one every single time. What a great idea. I will just open my bottomless wallet that every article seems to think I have so I can buy a new device every time it comes out like the Apple sheep do.

Tell you what Square and Epic and everyone else, we can do this as long as you buy consoles for all of us every time it changes to fit your needs.Send me the check and I will gladly join the endless tech loop that many companies have you in claiming that you are stupid unless you buy every new version and device that they come up with every time their piles of cash get to low.

I agree. Why should I be happy with what I have for a decent amount of time when you can force me to pay for new things as soon as possible. The least imaginative companies Square Enix and Epic complain constantly about power and graphics so they can just make the same crappy game over and over again with brighter colors instead of SE trying to improve the crap they have the nerve to call Final Fantasy games these days or Epic trying to give some actually personality to the stones they call characters.Same crappy FF, same crappy Gears of War with nothing but a new coat of paint on it.

This console will be the start of yearly hardware
Every year it will get better, faster, new os
Just like android phones and tablets do now
Iphones and pads are the same way
These consoles may be the future of gaming
Im interested...very much so
So dont be to quick to hate you will most likely own one of these consoles for sure

I had the LaserActive... it was a nice collectors piece but not very practical. Especially when it came to needing recapping. I think i paid all of about $50 for the floor model from an incredible Universe back in the day. I ended up selling it many years later for $300 at the time due to it needing a new laser and the aforementioned recapping.

An honorable mention not on the list would be the VM Labs Nuon. It basically looked like any regular DVD player but it had ports on it for controllers to play specific games. one of which is still exclusive to it with Tempest 3000. It also offered nuon enhanced DVD movies with extra content not accessible by regular players.

How has this article missed out Sega's Dreamcast and Nintendo's Wii U, two consoles that were actually superb devices in their own right, but were seen as failed due to lacklustre sales at the time of release?

Knightofelemia1578d ago

Wonder how long before Stadia appears on the list surprised the Ngage is not on that list

I enjoy these kinds of articles.

Talk about a blast to the past.......I remember trying the virtual boy at Toy R Us and it was cool but I did feel slightly disoriented afterwards......good article.

That's pretty cool they were able to bring it back. It sucks when something online only gets killed.

I got mine when it first launched, however it wasn't good for anything other than retro emulation. I couldn't sell the thing fast enough. Managed to get almost all my money back selling it on eBay.

Xaywhat1610d ago

Just let go homies. It was DOA

JEECE1610d ago

I guess the Stadia launch is bringing back memories of other failed consoles/services.
