Why Roger Ebert Was Wrong – Video Games Can Be Art

WC writes: Everyone ready for a self-indulgent rant? Because I bought this soapbox in from the car, and they only let you hire out these megaphones for the day. So, ready? Excellent. Testing. Testing. Is this coming across self-righteous enough up the back there? Can you hear me being all judgemental? Okay. Here goes.

Roger Ebert is really going to lose face over these comments.

TheTimeDoctor4301d ago (Edited 4301d ago )

well said! he's like a freakin mr potato head!

jeseth4301d ago

Its "Video Games can be art" .... its "Video Games have been art since the beginning".

Video Games are one of the best mediums for both entertainment and artistic expression over the last 25 years especially. Just consider how much imagination and ceativity has gone into teh greatest gaming moments of our lives!

Roger Ebert is a turd. He doesn't even know a good movie when he sees one ... I'd trust a 10 year old on a video gaming opinion over him!

Gaming1014301d ago

Videogames entail several art forms - storytelling, sound design, music, graphics design, gameplay design, all art forms in their own right.
It is the luddites who are out of touch, who have never played videogames who demonize them, degrade them, and degrade those who play them.

No poop... this is based on comments from over two years ago.

RXL4301d ago (Edited 4301d ago )

hey!...watch your language...there's children present!

guitarded774301d ago (Edited 4301d ago )

@ RXL

I have to watch my language... I lost 3 bubbles for cussing. Mods take that poop seriously around here. Well, actually 2 for cussing and 1 for cussing and talking poop about a particular big gaming site. Plus the word poop is just fun to say... especially if you say it twice in a row.

RXL4300d ago

iv gotten poop for my language as well..i feel your pooping pain brother..

poop poop

To each his own. If Roger doesn't think games are art, that's his loss. However, the only reason I'd want him to change his mind is because many movie watchers trust his word. I'd hate to see his views on gaming spread to anyone else. It's rather insulting to games to think they they can't compete in the same league as movies and music. Games are as much an expression of the developer as music is for the artist. Developer == Artist.

glennco4300d ago

not to each his own at all. if you are going to make comments like this you had better played some games to back it up. the guy hasnt played any games. like the author said... "if someone hadn’t seen Citizen Kane it would be okay for them to arbitrarily bin it as a dreary, pretentious, ill-lit bore – an undergraduate mess where people draw lines on their faces to indicate that they have aged."

at least research if you are going to open your mouth and behave like an authority on a subject (not you SeekDev but Ebert)

SeekDev4300d ago

That's true. He really should try the wonderful games he's bashing. He should watch Indie Game: The Movie, if he hasn't already, that might open his eyes.

SpinalRemains1384301d ago (Edited 4301d ago )

Can't trust anyone who puts more stock into their opinion on everything rather than noticing they need to eat some carrots and do a sit up.

From Glen Beck to Roger Ebert; all the fatties seem to have an opinion about everything, and in their mind's, they're never wrong. Am I right?

TheTimeDoctor4301d ago (Edited 4301d ago )

you're completely right. tough taking a guy seriously that looks like a Picasso painting.

QuodEratDemonstrandm4301d ago

Video games are really just like any other medium. They can be art, but that doesn't mean they are. Most of them are entertainment.
That's not necessarily a bad thing. There is some great entertainment in books, movies, music, and video games. Art and entertainment are just two different things.
Books: 1984, The Great Gatsby, LOTR = art. Necroscope, Harry Potter, Twilight = entertainment.
Movies: American Beauty, The Godfather, Pulp Fiction = art. Anything directed by Michael Bay = entertainment.
Music: Supergrass, Nine Inch Nails, Lacuna Coil = art. Most top 40 radio = entertainment. Tool and Lady Gaga = pretentious nonsense.
Video games: MGS, Journey, Limbo = art. CoD, GTA, Assassin's Creed = entertainment. Duke Nukem, Blackwater = crap.

L.A. Noire And Bully — Rockstar's Lost Gems That Deserve A Sequel As Much As GTA

Hanzala from eXputer: "I do appreciate GTA 6, Rockstar, but if I could trade it for a new L.A. Noire or a Bully game, I'd do so in a heartbeat."

Skuletor11d ago

How are they lost? You can get L.A. Noire on Steam, PS5, Xbox Series and Nintendo Switch and Bully is on the PS5 and Xbox Series too.

Psychonaut8511d ago

I want a new Manhunt game. But that will never happen.

Demetrius11d ago

Mfs are too sensitive nowadays and would cry instead of being concerned bout real world problems

Demetrius11d ago

Whenever gta 6 launch we won't be getting another rockstar title for another 10 years lol but on the positive side they bou to come back n show how open world supposed to be done 🔥

Skuletor11d ago

I won't expect any singleplayer DLC like IV's The Lost & Damned or The Ballad of Gay Tony after it launches either

I'm Replaying Skyrim (again), and So Should You

Replaying Skyrim after 13 years is a reminder of the progress made in western RPGs over the last decade, but also what's been lost.

anast12d ago

I tried, but it's a poorly made game that insults its customers.

lucian22912d ago

nah, only mods make it decent, and even then it's bad, and this is after i modded for at least 3 years

Nittdarko12d ago

Funnily enough, I'm about to play it for the first time in VR with 1000 mods to make the game playable, as is the Bethesda way

2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave12d ago (Edited 12d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.
