What should we expect from the next generation of consoles – Xbox 720

GameZone writes, "When you hear “next generation” as a gamer, you start to picture photo-realistic graphics and movie quality games. In reality, you usually get enhanced console features such as online gaming and improved graphical capabilities like enhanced lighting effects. So while we’re closing in on the end of the Xbox 360’s lifecycle, we can start to picture what the Xbox 720 will look like."

Looking like this next generation will be the last as far as consoles as we know them are concerned. So I'd expect all of them to offer some sort of "cloud" and that eliminates the need to build expensive new hardware.

Then all the games are digital, eliminates all used game sales and these companies can keep 100% of the profit.

Of course they will still charge us full retail prices, because gaming isn't in a fragile enough state as it is.

I think people fear games costing $60 with no flexibility. If it removes the used game market and cuts back on piracy they should apply that added revenue to game development and new IP's.

I don't expect wonders from the next XBOX as far as a game platform, more of a centerpiece that ties the XBOX online world together. Seems to me Micrsooft is more concerned with getting movie services, music services, (and also games), to all tie together through XBOX Live. Then apply that to a whole bunch of devices through Smartglass. It started with Live fees and then it carried over to DLC. Now i can see a more advanced membership model appearing, and the new $99 hardware approach could be the tell-tale sign of things to come. They locked people into monthly/annual Live fees, and with the new free to play model we see for MMO games this is right up their alley. Imagine XBOX being your next utility bill.

I want more open ended games with better physics, more interactivity with the world, better A.I. better mocap and then obviously better visuals, also for micro, reliable hardware straight out the gate, I dont want Rrod to happen to me again, it was heartbreaking everysingle time it happened

I expect more Cloud features & Motions controls. Unless we get a big surprise.

It seems so far away even though we are nearly 7 years into this console cycle. Frankly I just want to put next gen on a shelf for now, all the articles are just sort of frustrating because its all speculation. Until then I want to try and appreciate the great games we have now on all platforms.

I never got around to mass effect - I’m skeptical that it would hold up if I were to try it now

Furesis5h ago

I would say it does. The combat is a bit shit for todays standards but everything else is great.

It's worth a play through today.

El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron - Coming Back for a New Generation

Originally launched in 2011, El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron is coming to Nintendo Switch, so It's time to look back at the original.

Still have my ps3 copies. Bought it at launch and another one when I found it cheap and in perfect condition about 10 years ago. I wouldn’t buy it on Switch but if they made a PS5 version I would. I still have one of my PS3 Fats hooked up so good to go either way.

Id play it again on the switch. I wished my 360 version was bc but this is still a good way to play.

Fallout 3's Reveal Led To Death Threats And Bethesda's First Security Guard

The artist behind Fallout 4’s Deathclaw reveals just how bad things got back when Bethesda took over the series

anast1d 1h ago

People are stupid I get it. No one should feel unsafe,

But I think they need to talk about why they cut so many corners during the development process and why none of their games ever look current. And why they think all of this is okay while they charge full price.

LucasRuinedChildhood1d ago

As much as Bethesda deserve criticism, that's not really relevant to the reveal of Fallout 3 in 2007.

VenomUK22h ago

The default angle Kotaku always go for is to highlight the worst in gaming.

I would’ve focused on the creative.

anast3h ago

The game went downhill at Fallout 3's release. This is when they started to cut corners.

gold_drake20h ago

there is no "but". the hell lol
you dont send death threats, period.

anast3h ago

Usually, you have good comments but this isn't one of them. It just rides the mob. We can do both condemn the actions and not let them use it for other things.

I can say I received a death threat and everyone needs to shut up. People are not honest and will use horrible things to their advantage.

Armaggedon16h ago

Not all games “look” current.

anast3h ago

Their games always look like the gen before it.
