Cut PC Energy Consumption in Half with Hibernate

GamersNexus: "Aside from increasing the lifespan of your gaming PC, utilizing sleep states (most notably, S3 - Sleep, and S4 - Hibernate) is an easy and convenient way to cut-down on your electrical bill and carbon footprint. Depending on the drive and hardware used, booting from sleep often takes a matter of seconds (less than 10 in all cases of gaming rigs we've tested) and booting from hibernate is only slightly longer."

On the other hand, it's bad for your hard drive. Best to just turn it off completely and deal with the boot time.

PC's are far way more energy efficient today than ever before!

Mine stay on 24/7/365 and will go into energy saving mode when idle! Screen shuts of but PC stays on barely using energy!

Mistajeff is right Hibernate SUCKS!!! just turn it off. Windows 7 reboot is like 20 seconds (or Less)!

from power button on to Google it takes mine like 13 seconds i think!

I also deleted the hibernation file on my SSD to save space, I think it was like 10GB.

Your right ATi PC are more energy efficiant, lower wattage hardware most custome built pc will have some style energy saving option on the motherboard EPU example.
Hibernating started with windows millenium it used to crash my desktop terrable.

Nope my pc take around 25 seconds realisticly after about few months on new format using a segate xt momentus
When im not on it i turn it off , Before my son was born my pc was on 24/7 about 90% year always on it now i cant.

You're right with the shutdown.

What's the problem with shutting down the PC? Why is the extra seconds of booting up a PC such a chore for some people anyway?

I mean it's a PC (I'm referring to a desktop). Let it take its time to boot up while yo made yourself comfy, get a cup of coffee and turn off the phone. Why the rush?

I do download files all the times and even more so with Steam's Summer Sale just around the corner. I have to leave the PC on but I'll turn off the monitor, downclock the GPU to stock speed and lower its fan speed.

Of course it's a different story for PCs at work or the office. You need to save cost and get the PC back on immediately should some emergency paperwork arise.

Who gives a shit about their "carbon footprint"? Are there people who still buy into that "carbon credits" scam perpetrated by Al Gore?

RickHiggity4316d ago

I just shut my pc down when she's not in use

banjadude4316d ago

Though I am worried about my carbon footprint and electrical bill, the main reason I turn off my PC is, I cant' stand noise... of any sort! I just can't sleep with my PC on, ever.

FragMnTagM4316d ago

damn that is a loud computer then. I can't even hear mine being like 12 inches from it. Only if I was playing a demanding game like Crysis would I even barely hear it.

Sounds like you need some quieter fans.

Or he's like my wife and will startle awake if a pin drops in the next state, I can relate ARIjayden only if through my wife's superman ears, her nose is pretty good too. She always warns me I could never get away with cheating and I believe it.

I have one of those "CoolMaster" PC towers, with 1 large fan and I think... 2 smaller ones, so I guess the sound IS loud, but I've gotten used to it, but yeah, when it comes to sleep, I have to always have it off.

Pretty much what freylyler said is SPOT on, lol.
