Does the Ratchet & Clank HD Collection Prove Gaming Has Lost its Magic?

Thirteen1 - Ratchet & Clank enamoured just about every gamer old enough to have enjoyed the Ps2 generation, and rightfully so.

Insomniac’s 2002 take on platforming, which combined cute likeable characters and vividly coloured backdrops with a plethora of cool gadgets, helped form the spinal cord of the genre as we know and love it today. The harmless yet challenging exploration, the fun use of gadgets, the fact enemies spilled nuts and bolts instead of blood and guts - the duo took what Jak & Daxter did in 2001 and arguably made it better. The early 2000’s was a great time to be a gamer, capturing a sense of magic that’s sadly missing from games today.

But where has that magic gone?

no, magic never really existed, we just thought it did back then. but now the cold hand of scrutiny exposes that magic as nothing more than polygons, textures and AI.

that's what's happened to this industry and why games like Journey are more important than throwing ever more power at creativity. sometimes you don't need a million colour pallet, a piece of chalk and a clean pavement can create masterpieces in the right hands

lost its magic? more like Budget...

I think there's a difference between "originality" and that sense of "magic" talked about in this article.

Journey was an undisputed masterpiece, you're not wrong there. But that's not to say it captured any more magic than Ratchet & Clank did when it was released.

For me, magic is about making you feel like a kid again and being able to enjoy the innocence of youth no matter how old you happen to be.

Um no.

I see it as giving me a chance to play the games I've wanted to play for so long, but couldn't because Sony removed backwards compatibility.

Alot of games last gen i liked more than current gen games. I mean last gen seemed to have alot of quality, fun games while today, we don't get that much. Maybe it's cause we have high standards today, idk.

Well, it's been said the PS2 is considered the best console due to its library of games, which I do agree. From the beginning of its life cycle to its upcoming end (surprisingly it's still selling) there have been so many many great games, some even came out after the PS3 dropped, like God of War II. People talk about remastering some of these games because, they were so much fun back in the day, back when the gaming industry wasn't stale because of a bunch of FPSs. Today it's so hard to come by innovative games like Gravity Rush and Journey. So I don't think gaming lost its magic, it just needs time to be discovered.

Remember, Last Generation Had Plenty of Ports, Too

Kotaku - The announcement of Darksiders II: Definitive Edition coming to PlayStation 4 later this year got Kotaku wondering if we're seeing way more direct ports this generation. While it sure feels that way, I've compiled a list of them from last generation, and it doesn't seem all that different.

Funny how that pic highlights a port coming to 8th gen, a SECOND time from last gen. Face it, this gen is going to be WORSE, no matter how you spin it.

People tend to forget the PSOne generation, every SNES classic was getting a PSOne port back then.... and they didn't even improve graphics it was the exact same SNES Games with an anime cutscene threw in as the opening

Top 5 HD Collections On PS Vita

If you own a Vita then you will know that the handheld has more ports than the American East Coast. Ports from next-gen systems, last-gen consoles and even games from the PS2 era have come to the Vita in an attempt to shift some units.

Persona 4: Golden may not be considered HD, but the fact that it is the ultimate enhanced version of the classic game, should be reason enough to make the list.

Yeah!... I promote the Persona series every chance I get ;)))

The list its about HD --->Collections<---, thats why P4G isn't on the list.

MGS HD Collection shouldn't be on the first place, not even on that list, we (PSV owners) paid $15 more in comparison to the PS3 version and yet we got 1 game less, not to count that MGS 2 has a lot of frame drops on VR Missions...
