It's a shame there a so few recent horror games. Even Dead Space, the last real bastion of horror on modern consoles, seems to be turning into an action game.

Hopefully the next-generation will bring some more new IP's with an emphasis on horror.

Oddly enough, Clock Tower 3 was'nt the "scariest" of games, but it does hold a special place in my fear memory.
Particularly the part where your character, the young girl, witnesses the slaying of another girl in that house ( I think the killer used a sledgehammer or axe, don't remember). He sledged the crap out of the girl, & you were next if you could'nt run & escape out the house in time.
Also, that panic system was initially scary, how the visuals & controls distort when your in fear. But as the game goes on, that whole fear factor dies down.

But yes, I believe that video games can have an horror movie appeal. Devs just have to aim for it & DO IT RIGHT!
I think 1 thing that truly ruins horror games is the change in pace halfway thru the game.
For ex; the 1st half of the game is scary, submerging & serious-toned, then by the second half, it gets dull & silly, adding in magical elements, story plot twists & such, which breaks up & dilute the original fear feeling that you began'd the game with.

Oh, (snaps fingers), just like Clock Tower 3; it's scary & serious-toned during the 1st few chapters, then you start to learn that your character is some magical witch sister/daughter thing & how you have to "absorb" the evil with your powers (or something like that).

I've never heard of the winner before. Is it PC only?

NYC_Gamer4321d ago (Edited 4321d ago )

I have never been scared by any horror game

NukaCola4321d ago (Edited 4321d ago )

It's never the whole game but only moments in them that have given me a scare.

~The camera pulling up in Uncharted 2 where the beast stood up in the front ground startled the hell out of me.

~The first time you go into Rapture.

~That damn bear in Condemned.

Stuff like this that in your face and it's unknown or unexpected is what is fun and frightening. Dead Space isn't scary but it's a thrill ride. I know the sequel had a lot of action but the horror was there.

I do have to say Silent Hill 2 was really freaky. Sometimes scary but mostly really really disturbing.

Eternal Darkness was way ahead of its time especially for a Nintendo exclusive.

I would love to see a remake or sequel (multiplatform)

I played the OG Xbox game on 360 via BC. Played great and looked perfect. I imported the wii remake as well, but have never actually played it.

Great game and great series..hopefully they would port FF2 Wii remake version on other consoles as they did with FF4 and FF5
