Leaked Xbox 720 documents removed at the request of Microsoft's lawyers

The authenticity of the leaked Xbox 720 documents still hasn't been confirmed, but here's a check for the "true" column: Microsoft's law firm, Covington & Burling LLP, asked Scribd.com to delete the file from its site.

That certainly seems to be the implication.

Hisiru4330d ago (Edited 4330d ago )

Not really as powerful as people said but this document is two years old, so who knows?

Looks like I am buying a PS4(probably more exclusives and probably more power, because that's how Sony works) and WiiU next generation.

If it's indeed true, then the WiiU won't be too far from the next x720 graphically speaking.

ApplEaglElephant4330d ago

Xbox is all about casual now. They dont need expensive powerful console.

Its gonna be all kinect kinect and kinect with casual, casual and casual stuff. May be few hardcore exclusives at launch. then its gonna be dry exclusive in a year or two.

Gaming1014330d ago

Yeah they've been planning this for 2 years, consoles take years of research and development to come out. I'm not sure it makes sense that the console has a blu-ray drive if it doesn't need it due to this cloud gaming idea, where you never have to upgrade your hardware ever again - you just stream using technology from this OnLive company.

Cloud gaming will become a reality when fiber optics internet becomes the norm - it has taken us 13 years to get where we are today since broadband was introduced, and we still don't have full coverage. It will take another 10 years before fiber optics is in every house for fiver optics to become the norm.

stuna14330d ago

The sad thing is that if the generation had been a repeat of last generation, and nintendo hadn't garnered as much attention in the casual space with the wii. What would have been microsofts stance? And would they have been more heavily vested in the core side of gaming!

In my opinion the wii has sent gaming in a totally different direction than gaming should have took.

greenpowerz4330d ago

Hisoru

Glad to see you edited your comment making it less extreme(desperate) When you stop and think about it. 8 times more powerful is a very strong improvement .Enough to even make watch dogs remain impressive. Wait for playstation news before mentioning it.

They still have not cleaned this place up after all these years.

MrMister4330d ago

@ HISIRU: From what I saw at E3, I doubt the final specs of the wii-u will be more powerful than a Vita. The graphics seen at E3 were on old wii quality in Hd and assassins creed and batman on it looked underwhelming. The wii U is a far cry from that Zelda HD demo pf last year. Astoundingly, Nintendo decided it woild be better to be even more obsolete.

ProjectVulcan4330d ago (Edited 4330d ago )

Its an interesting little slide. Lots of questions marks over hardware. Seems fairly realistic. If it is just faked then its a decent fake and pretty believable. Written by someone who knows a fair bit and didn't get carried away with preposterous speculation.

For example base system power draw aimed for 120 watts with a claimed target of 8x performance on 28nm- that is achievable and somewhere in the ballpark of what you would expect.

Lazy_Sunday4330d ago

Basic ISP speeds aren't fast enough to make OnLive reliable, and they won't be for the next 6 or so years due to, well, greedy ISPs.

Hisiru4330d ago (Edited 4330d ago )

@greenpowerz + 1h ago
Don't know what youre talking about. I already had a x360 and have nothing against Microsoft. I just think they souldn't give so much focus to kineckt.

I said I was going to buy a PS4 because it has a lot of great exclusives like GOW, UC, Heavy Rain etc. I also love all the Nintendo franchise.

greenpowerz4330d ago (Edited 4330d ago )

Hiriu

No one cares about Playstation in 360 posts(except for the people trolling) I'm sorry the xbox brand didn't work out you. With all your games why waste time in here? I for one happen to be a fan waiting on info about the next gen xbox.

+one hour ago? So....

Heard you the first time hense the reply. Not as powerful as who said? Bet you voted doubtful in the first story not believeling the specs. I simply said you are downplaying the news with reverse psychology and bringing up your ps loyalty and ps franchises as damage comfort control. You have nothing against MS you just go out of your way to find an excuse to show your disdain in unrealated 360 posts.

Hisiru4330d ago

@greewpowder

Youre acting so defensive and I wonder why? I just said it's not as powerful as people said before and that I will probably stick with the other consoles.

And who said the xbox brand didn't work out for me? You're making hasty assumptions now. I loved Crackdown, Lost Odyssey, Gears of War and some other games, but I got a RROD in my face so I bought a PS3 because of the number of exclusive games. Maybe some people won't give a sh** about the PS3 exclusives and will prefer the x360 exclusives. My brother is using the TV right now, so I can't waste my time playing anything.

PS loyalty? Lol... it's proof that youre acting so defensive and making a lot of assumptions. I am more of a PC/Nintendo player.

I think you should calm down and go after someone else.

gaffyh4330d ago

Can I just ask, how in the hell is 8x as powerful as an Xbox 360 NOT very powerful? 8 times as powerful is an incredible upgrade, and more than enough imo.

Only thing I didn't like about the document is the suggestion that you might need glasses for the AR. Glasses are always annoying.

Korix4330d ago

@gaffyh

8 times more powerful than a 360 is not in general very powerful, because the 360 is made up of 7 years old hardware. 8 years old if you account for a 2013 release. It's not a leap past PC specs of today, it's more a catching-up step.
Consider this. A new console in 2013 sold for $299 is gonna compete with PC hardware that people spend much more than 299 on, which, if anything, is even more up to date, as hardware is not released in far-in-between cycles.
Even though 299 is gonna be a loss for MS at first, it can't possibly hope to compete with high end PCs. Hence we won't be seeing amazing graphics that hasn't ever been done before.
Preparing not to be amazed.

Daishi4330d ago

@ Korix
Catching up to PC hardware is all it needs to do. It could be 50 times more powerful and it be a complete waste when all third party developers do is "move" PC games over to it. This industry is a business and it all comes down to money. It's up to us to show how important hardcore consoles are and not wavy hands casual consoles.

ABizzel14330d ago

Hmmm. This is interesting, but just about what I expected. In a previous blog of mine I said:

http://n4g.com/blogs/detail...

Nintendo is going to release a console that on par or slightly above what the PS3 and 360 currently produce with a new gimmicky to entice gamers (man was I on point regarding the Wii U back then).

http://n4g.com/blogs/detail...

MS will produce an upgrade to the 360 that will be a step up, but not the leap the hardcore are actually looking for. It will have an improved Kinect integrated, and their focus will be on developing a multimedia box more so than a gaming console (If these rumors are true then again I called it).

http://n4g.com/blogs/detail...

Sony was the only company I was unsure of. They could go either way. An all out powerful mega console made for the hardcore or a similar direction as MS.

SkyGamer4329d ago

How is an eight times not that powerful? You have to take into consideration a Triple Core dual thread IBM architecture cpu clocked in at 3.2 ghz now give it 8 times the performance. Custom 500 mhz Unified Shaders Radeon Video Card with 10 MB eDRAM then give that 8 times the performance. Take the 512 mb RAM and give that 8 times the performance. Plus a stripped down version of Windows Server 2008 r2. It will be noticable.

On the competitors side sony is talking about using amd for their cpu and gpu. That being said, they are not going for the performance crown with AMD. Now don't get me wrong, love AMD have quite a few quad, hex and triple core machines myself but they don't take the performance away from Intel. Now they are cheaper so hopefully the ps4 will be cheap. sony is looking to use an a8 which is a quad core amd clocked in at 2.1 or 2.4 ghz each core. They may have a turbo mode up to 3.33 ghz.

Bottom line is that sony is learning from their past mistakes into why they are third place. Make it more dev friendly, cheaper and you have more customers.

What I've heard from the MS camp is that they will be using a dual video card setup. That will be interesting as they had heating issues with the first one, rrod.

I actually thought the above was clever.

indysurfn4330d ago (Edited 4330d ago )

Yeah it was on the site, I read it but one thing stood out to me. It was talking about the "future plans" (and of building plans). Plus part of the title was "1st draft". This is basically a big guideline, or plans to make plans. From some of the wording. But other parts of the wording was specific. Not consistent! But A BIG thing is, it had a time line ranging from 2011 thru 2015. Now this is what I caught, if it is talking about the future, and 2011 is in the future then this is a very outdated plan.

Scarey thing is they where already talking ATI! And already talking 4 player tracking. And already talking "dedicated processing" built into Kinect V2, plus support for Kinect V1. And already saying Kinect v2 would be HD RGB! And already talking about dedicated hardware for 360 games (backwards compatibility).

The article on the other hand already knew that the next wii was called Wiiu, and launchs in late 2012. It also list's Sony as launching in 2013! So did they just come back, and update that part? Or is this just a head fake they are giving to Sony?

Why would you need it to be backwards compatible with Kinect v1 if v2 is to be included? My thought is, that would make sense if only one of the two skus included the kinect v2! The $299 sku. Also the article says Wiiu $249, and PS4 $399. This all sounds good on the pricing to me (compared to this gen's launch prices). They are also in a chart saying the "system cost" would add up to $225. I chalk it up as manufacturing cost before adding in shipping, and all capitol investments.

A common them is 9-24 One MAJOR section says the 9-24 agenda! Plus the article has in it's name 720-9-24, is that Sep. 24 of some year? 9/24/2013 maybe? Also it talks like it is also a DVR or TIVO box! In fact the box itself looks like a slim Blu-ray player box.

Scary for Sony is they are talking OEM's! Any pc builder from back in the expensive pc days, will tell you this is how the price of PC's fell like a rock! Now a pc can be had for less than $500, other manufacturers have the license to make a version of your box! THIS is what Microsoft did with PC right off the bat. It is the reason they beat Apple PC all those years!

OEM, imagine Dell MAKING and selling a xbox720, no skip that, a HP, no skip that a Lenovo, no skip that SAMSUNG! Why these four? Because they are listed in the OEM section! Everyone else will be fighting to get in on the action! Just like PC. Instead of everyone buying a os2 warp IBM PC, or a Apple. They went with Microsoft IBM compatible pc boxes made by OEM's eventually they dropped the IBM compatible line.

"The game is all around you in the real world." actual quote with a insinuating 3d drawing (stick like) of a man coming out of the tv. This had better not be what I think it could be! (the tech has existed for years and is being improved). Because if it is, then even people that hate Microsoft will mess their pants an sell out to Microsoft in 720 ms(milliseconds ), unless Sony copies and fast!

I hope not. Or at least not the finalized version. 4gigs of 128 bit RAM (at the end of 2013 no less) is PATHETIC!

BitbyDeath4330d ago

4GB is plenty considering it won't have a Windows sized OS also running in the background.

ProjectVulcan4330d ago

128bit bus with upcoming DDR4 would be plenty of bandwidth for any CPU. You would have to assume that the design is an incredibly similar concept to the existing Xbox 360, with the EDRAM having fairly good bandwidth to the GPU and fantastic internal bandwidth if the dies happen to be split between logic and memory again.

Essentially this design would be a near identical concept that developers have worked with inside 360 for years, but with everything turned up. More CPU cores, more memory, more GPU performance.

It would be pretty unusual for a company to go for a much more powerful machine, but still stick to the same style of hardware design concept they introduced way back in 2005.

Maybe back when these were planned, they thought if it aint broke....

Bigpappy4330d ago (Edited 4330d ago )

Agreed vulcanproject, this reduces the learning curve for developers and just adds more power.

@donman1: The glasses are not for 3D. Virtual Reality!

cstyle4330d ago

Doesn't mean it was real though. Only people know about 720 right now is MS and some developers.

mcstorm4329d ago

I agree do people think ms just have one idea d go with it? They will have several different ideas going at once.

I also love some people's comments on this site and shows how long they have been gaming for by saying if this specs true then they will get a ps4 as sony always bring out more powerful hardware. Looks like they are forgetting the psx and ps2 were the lest powerful of there gen.

If im honest im not too fussed when next gen comes as the 360 and ps3 still has some amazing new games coming out for it and the 3ds and psv are also getting some amazing new games then on top of all that the wiiu will also have some must own games so as a gamer im happy for this to carry on another 12 to 24 months before the next xbox and Playstation.

donman14330d ago

So Microsoft lawyers got involved... hmmm where there is smoke there is fire. There is clearly some truth to this. Not a fan of the glasses thing, if true, for any 3D game play.

indysurfn4330d ago

what you mean by 3d game play? Do you mean like Killzone3 3d, and halo combat evolved 3d? If yes then this is not that kind! It is a fake holographic kind. If no then I'm not sure you want to judge something that few people have had the honor to test. FEW! You may LOVE IT! Also there is rumor from last Christmas that Sony was looking into it!

I got friend who works in Microsoft and he said this leaked Xbox 720 documents are real.
Its Kinect + Onlive console = Xbox720
Microsoft dosent make anymore like Xbox 360 console, they make it all stream online games.

They going to use Xbox Live to stream games and play.
Nintendo uses Wii U
Sony PS4 is going to be classic, like all other Sony consoles.

So its very possible Sony to win next gen.

Darth_Bane794330d ago

I think they are trying to monopolize every aspect of home entertainment that they can put their hands on. As a business, it sounds like a good idea, but it could be a very dangerous move. I think they are not just aiming at competing with Sony, but also at competing with Apple on the home entertainment field. Think of all the peripherals they could sell and the different monthly paid services they could offer. Now the question is, will it work? Or are they trying to swallow a lot more than they can chew?

4330d ago
FamilyGuy4330d ago (Edited 4330d ago )

I'm very much on the Sony bandwagon but if this is true, the $300 part more specifically, I might get it just to have it and whatever bells whistles and exclusives it comes with. I really can't imagine any next gen console being under $400 so this sounds great.

God I hope so. Otherwise it's up to Epic games to save the next Xbox once again.

ardivt4330d ago

I even think microsoft already was close to presenting the xbox successor to the public. but then they saw what unreal engine 4/cryengine 3 could do with proper hardware and so they revised the hardware/gpu so that the next xbox can definitely run it in a decent way.

OneAboveAll4330d ago

Considering it's not running an operating system like PC's as well as other background tasks that hog the system yea... it's pretty potent.

That's what consoles are for.

Cueil4329d ago

it is running something in the background though... the Xbox Live stuff runs in the background takes up 10 percent of ram and processing power

Grap4330d ago

nirwanda4330d ago (Edited 4330d ago )

@hellraiser it depends on the ram they want to use look at the difference in price bettween the edram they used last time and the main memory if ram price were not an issue it would have all been ed ram

JeffGrubb4330d ago

It may be powerful enough until it switches over to cloud streaming. Hell, it could do half cloud streaming and half local processing.

BitbyDeath4330d ago (Edited 4330d ago )

First company to switch over to cloud streaming will be the first company to go out of business.

It just won't happen, too many people out there don't even have a viable connection or any connection at all.

Cueil4329d ago

BitbyDeath Microsoft isn't going out of buisness

Gildarts4330d ago

you people don't get it, if it has cloud gaming, IT doesn't need to be 100000x better then 360 that would mean it will also become 1000000x more expensive then the 360.

Go look at onlive to see what cloud gaming is.

madjedi4330d ago (Edited 4330d ago )

Onlive which usually has lower resolution than most console games and had issues with lagging even in single players games. If that is cloud gaming at it's finest or it's current shape i'll pass.

Gildarts4330d ago

cloud gaming is far from perfect(yet) and i wasn't implying it was.

greenpowerz4330d ago (Edited 4330d ago )

According to the standards you built up in your head. I can't tell if you think next gen would harbor Skynet tech or if you are trolling out of fear and disbelief. Got a kick out of hundreds of Sony fans voting the original story as *doubtful* based on denial and wishful thinking.

Are last gen consoles 8 times weaker than current gen consoles? Think a little man. I'm thinking they'll even beef up the already impressive specs we see in these data sheets, MS realizing they need housepower for all the multi media function layered with eachother. The multi media vision of MS will make the 360 extremely powerful. Not just in revised power but multi tasked function as well.

+ Show (3) more repliesLast reply 4329d ago
malypso4330d ago

It might be changed slightly but nonetheless not a massive leap from current consoles, especially if bundled with kinect. More polygons, and more textures like I thought.

malypso4330d ago

*)Okay those who disagree with me, there was a huge leap in graphics and resolution with the PS3 to PS2, it wasn't that huge from XBOX to 360 but was pretty decent, as the original XBOX already had a nice hardware and a resolution of 720p! PS2 on the other hand had a max resolution of 480p.
*)The Wii U will at least be 20X stronger than its predecessor the Wii which is a massive leap for Nintendo IMHO.
*)If the new XBOX is only going to be 5-6X stronger, then there isn't any reason to get all excited. I'll get one because $299 is a great deal and my Xbox 360 is my main hub for media/movies etc... I will also get a Wii U! Probably not at launch, but eventually there will be some kick ass, must-own titles that will make me. I don't mind spending $249-$299 for a home console. I don't want to buy all 3 again so I will wait for Sony to unveil PS4's price to see which one I will axe out between Sony ans MS...

GribbleGrunger4330d ago (Edited 4330d ago )

it's a game that all companies (including Sony) play people. don't be so naive: specs of your up and coming consoles are leaked suggesting a weaker than expected machine. this puts the other company at a loss to whether to believe or not. if they believe it they also believe that their machine doesn't have to be as powerful either and so they can make it cheaper. lots of companies do this on pricing too, suggesting a very high price and then dropping that price at launch. people then forget it's still a high price because they're pleased it's lower than expected. this strategy of suggesting lower specs works on both these levels

stuna14330d ago

Well thought out comment!

Thats what you call fane'goling the consumer lol.

SkyGamer4329d ago

True but there is a big difference in specs and theoretical power. Last gen sony used theoretical numbers while MS used specs. Specs are specs.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

CrimsonWing695h ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker4h ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing694h ago(Edited 4h ago)

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.
