Do Romantic Choices Influence Your Decision to Buy?

MMOsite writes: Romantic options have been in games for quite sometime. Of course, most stories in RPGs usually have the main hero falling for some captured princess in one way or another, but games like Star Ocean actually gave you an option to choose how and who you wanted to end the game with. The series even offered 'friendship' same-sex pairing at the end of Star Ocean 2 and 3 if you preferred not to end the game with a love interest in mind. Harvest Moon also allowed for romantic pairings, ending in marriage, kids, friendship, and even helping other NPCs pair off and form their own families.

Romantic choices don't affect my purchase decisions in the least bit. Actually, I mainly disregard them for the most part. I don't care that Commander Shepard can hump multiple women or "go gay". I do care about having the choice to save or kill, rescue hostages or let them be. Those choices matter to me.

Having said that, many people enjoy the relationship aspects of games. More power to them. I'm just not one.

Also, writers spend time making these characters, giving them attitudes and backstories. It's their creations, they don't have to flip any switches if they don't want to. And seriously.. it's frickin Star Wars, where relationships are nonsensical, anyway. The great love between Padme and Anakin that changed the fate of the universe played out like a high school drama club production. Stick to Sith and Jedi and lightsabers.. that's what you're good at.

If people do you must be a very lonely people and this must be a picture of them.

Ehh, thats a bit of a stretch, maby for the characters, but just straight up for one romance, thats a bit far.

I've been married for 20+ years. Like I give a shit about romance. Give me a good time or a deal, that is what I care about!

I'm Replaying Skyrim (again), and So Should You

Replaying Skyrim after 13 years is a reminder of the progress made in western RPGs over the last decade, but also what's been lost.

anast12d ago

I tried, but it's a poorly made game that insults its customers.

lucian22912d ago

nah, only mods make it decent, and even then it's bad, and this is after i modded for at least 3 years

Funnily enough, I'm about to play it for the first time in VR with 1000 mods to make the game playable, as is the Bethesda way

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave12d ago (Edited 12d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.
