Move over, consoles — mobile is the future

Was it SmartGlass that first tipped you off? How about the Wii U’s new GamePad? The promise of the Sony PlayStation Vita cross-play games? How about the huge number of traditional console game companies showing off their latest entries for the mobile arena of smartphones and tablets from Apple to Android? This year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), a sprawling, industry-only conference of the biggest names in video game entertainment, has gone mobile in a big way.

At the end of a long day of work you're probably going to find me in my basement, plopped down on a couch, with a NES/SNES/Genesis/N64 controller in hand. It'll be nostalgic comfort before I go to bed. Remembering how games used to control.

darthv724324d ago

will be more about multipurpose than dedicated. So the likes of a portable device being used as a console seems fitting.

hook it up when you want to play games on a bigger screen or unhook it when you want to take it with you. Its a concept that may have been ahead of its time a few years ago but we are coming back around to where it would be more viable.

in my experience a super phone like my Galaxy S2 has potential as a gaming device but not there yet.

Wireless mirroring like Air Play or Xbounds are not perfected yet.

Control pad adapters are not popular yet.

New haptic tactile feedback touchscreen bound for the touchscreen is not here yet

5" smart phone like the Galaxy Note is not mainstream either.

PS Vita is the perfect mobile hardware. It has everything except a phone calling functionality save for Skype. It could have done better if it used an open but customized Android OS with tons of games right out of the box on top of its exclusive games.
For Apple or M$ to allow PS Mobile games on their hardware is a tough sell.

The 3DS should have been designed to be the Wii U gamepad.

"The 3DS should have been designed to be the Wii U gamepad."

No. Why would anyone want this? I want my controller to be primarily designed as the controller. Which is what Nintendo did and there is no latency and it actually feels light and ergonomic like a real controller but with a screen in the middle.

@ linkratos

"I want my controller to be primarily designed as the controller. "

That is exactly what I meant with...

"The 3DS should have been designed to be the Wii U Gamepad." from the start.

Until my mobile device can provide great visuals, wirelessly to my TV/monitor and support a plethora of input devices. Pads, keyboards and mice. I'll have a need for a 'dedicated' device.

There's no denying that the mobile industry is growing and advancing faster than any other though. It's amazing what were carrying in our pockets these days.

darthv724324d ago

I can see mobile devices docking to a tv like the psp go can do. then again, if you get an incoming call i guess you would need to have it handy to answer.

Fishy Fingers4324d ago (Edited 4324d ago )

Fair point. It's more a preference. Id still like to be able to operate what's on the TV screen from the device itself. Internet, flicking through music or media. Whatever it maybe.

Just how I picture it I guess. Who wants a 2 metre cable, uglying up their fancy tech :)

hennessey864324d ago

How am I meant to use my Fantatec GT2 on the train, the simple fact is only certain games can go mobile. I can't see sim racers carting there rigs around, by the time they have set them up on the bus it will be time to get off, plus I don't think the other passengers would appreciate the sound of a V8 in the morning

GamingPerson4324d ago (Edited 4324d ago )

WiiU, Smart Glass, PSVita & 3dS all now have touchscreen like a smart phone. But Smart phones don't try to be like psVita's or 3ds's.. just saying Console makers are reacting to the smart phone boom & not the other way around.

Windows 10 Xbox app gets Xbox One SmartGlass tech for future game streaming

Microsoft is migrating several functions formerly reserved for its Xbox One SmartGlass mobile app into the Xbox app for Windows 10, as it increasingly ties the Xbox One console to PCs and mobile devices. SmartGlass is a “second screen” app that was originally written for Windows Phone, allowing it, for example, to control aspects of a connected Xbox One.

I care more about cross buy then streaming, but for at the moment we Can only wait and see how things going on...anyway future is bright for Pc and xbox palyers;£

ScorpiusX3320d ago

Very cool , W10 is going to be a blast.

mhunterjr3320d ago

I don't have a gaming PC, but the idea of being able to play my Xbox from any room in the house, is very appealing to me!

I have been reading some threads people trashing MS for the streaming pc n x1.. But I love it!!! Going to lot better n more up to date games, then what Sony doing with ps now streaming Old games at a high price,.. I really think MS is going to nail the cross platform n streaming....

ThatOneRiggaNob3320d ago

People will trash Microsoft for anything they do. It's just the way this gen works. Also I don't see why you mentioned ps now since it's an actual streaming service and Xbox to win10 streaming is just you streaming your already owned games to a pc. They're not the same thing at all.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen3320d ago

The streaming feature is definitely a positive. I have no idea why anyone would think that cross platform streaming would be a bad thing.

That was to be expected. Good job MS. Keep the great games and features coming. By next year, I wont be surprised if they say the Xbox can transform

JohnJ3523d ago

Everyone I know who owns an xbox one, Is absolutely loving it. I have both and love both but I have to be honest, the xbox one is the better console.

Bonkerz3523d ago

I have to agree, i play a PS4 daily (my bestfriend has one and we live next to eachother) and even when he comes here he is blown away with all the features and stuff that can be done on the X1. The PS4 is a great console obviously but at this point in time hands down the X1 is better choice.

4Sh0w3523d ago

That's really awesome, I use my Samsung Galaxy phone to constantly stay updated with Xbox news, love android and this is just 1 more way I can use my phone to interact with my X1 gaming addiction.

Assault93523d ago

Is their a point to this?
Oh I see, the future of no kinect.

timlot3523d ago (Edited 3523d ago )

Its really amazing how much effort they are putting in the platform. Every other day there is news of this new feature or that update. Can't wait for what next week is going to bring.

PsylentKiller3523d ago

I teals like this feature. Since is play mostly at night while my GF is sleeping, it's difficult to get the kinect to hear me when whispering. Now, I can just tap my phone. This is also good if there is a lot of background noise.

tgunzz3523d ago

Xb1 has so much to offer... I hope more, and more gamers pick one up, and enjoy it awesome feature set, and games... Game on.

AutoCad3523d ago
