Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed leaves Mario Kart in its dust…and wake…and vapor trail

VentureBeat writes: "This could be blasphemy, but Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, publisher Sega’s new kart racer, may be more fun to play than Mario Kart, the series that invented the genre back in 1992 on the Super Nintendo system and has seen a release on every major console from the company ever since."

The first one was great, but this one looks like it fixed everything that was wrong in the first game... With a massive budget, and some new talent from the Blur and PGR and Split/Second developers... this might be the best so far!

Hmmm, I'd been writing this off as another one of "those" Sonic games... I might have to look into it a bit more though, the ability to fly and boat made me think of Diddy Kong Racing back on N64, and that is a VERY good thing.

I actually can't wait to try this game.

I look forward to playing this game the last one was fun but it was no mario kart beater in fact one of the kart games i have played bump n burn, crash karting, mod nation racers, joy ride and a few others have not been as good as the mario kart versions even though ive enjoyed the other games too. But ill defo be picking this up along with lbp karting too.

Speed freaks on the PSX was a really good one.

Nerdmaster171d ago

Chocobo GP had potencial to be a worthy competitor, but Square Enix just couldn't help itself from ruining it with bad monetization. Still fun to run a couple of races from time to time, though.

Kneetos170d ago

Still sad we haven't gotten a new mod nation racers from Sony in a hot minute

I played that more then MKWii for a while.

Yes, yes it is! Damn shame that Sega never made another sequel or even updated this one with new tracks and characters.

"The platform of choice, however, is the Xbox Series X."

Yessir, the game runs extremely smooth because of the frame rate boost. Still, till this day I play Sonic ASR with friends.

Transformed is my favorite of the series. Even Team racing (the next iteration) is pretty good too but I liked transformed better.

gangsta_red819d ago

I tried team racing and it just didn't click with me as much as Transformed did.

I seriously just wish Sega would do another sequel to that game instead of trying to reinvent the wheel.

It was the best alternative to Mario Kart on Xbox/PS

Good list. Personally I’d probably trade the Sonic CD game in this list for Sonic the Hedgehog (1), simply because CD is quite easy so you’ll blast through it, and the original Sonic was basically a new benchmark when it was released which blew everything and everyone at the time away. It also features my favorite zone, Starlight Zone.

I really hope one day we’ll be blessed with a Sonic Mania 2.

RetroCaptainSteve870d ago

Yeah, the first game will always be a classic, but I believe Sonic 2 and 3 moved the chains for the series quite a bit. Sonic CD definitely innovated as well, particularly with its amazing soundtracks and 3D bonus stage. :D

R was one of my first PC games along with Worms 2 and some others like Virtual Springfield. R was kind of good in a strange way i guess, i didn't hate it at the time.

Sonic CD was decent but I'd say i liked the music more, at least for the JP/EU version, some of the levels felt a bit all over the place and most of the bosses were odd and a bit too easy. Even though the system was a flop too it did have some very good games like Final Fight also which had some great music.

Rebel_Scum868d ago

The 8-bit Sonic’s always get left off these ranked lists.

Good picks! But...SA 2 kinda fell backward on those digging segments. Great rap song tho!
