Screw the FPS and RPG - I want more platformers

OXM's Edwin writes: I'd like to say that the humble platformer is a victim of snobbery, but the genre often inspires something far worse: apathy. For many of us, the house that Mario built is so much destructible screen furniture along the route to grown-up virtual pursuits, like punching coins out of griffins or timing your Power Reloads by way of the sound effects alone. It's a "childish" genre, fit for consumption by adults only after you've repackaged it as a "celebration of retro".

Rayman Origins and Fez are both top tier games. I really need to try Trials Evolution sometime.

Yi-Long4349d ago

... and you should also check out Super Meat Boy and Joe Danger!

Yi-Long4349d ago (Edited 4349d ago )

... I miss the old 2D gameplay of older generations.

Super Meat Boy, Shadow Complex, Rayman Origins, etc etc are all great new additions to the genre, but still, we need MORE!

Turrican HD please!

Also, I'd love to see a return to the classic scrolling Beat'm-Up, but obviously with current-gen graphics and gameplay!

dirigiblebill4349d ago

Shadow Complex would be awesomes. I'd like more 3D platformers too - games like Jak & Daxter, Gex and Jumping Flash.

ShaunCameron4349d ago

Thank God I own a Wii.

But yeah, especially on the HD consoles. With all the technological capabilities, you mean to tell me that neither of them could come up with a decent library of 3D platformers?

_Aarix_4349d ago

Thats the biggest reason I own a ps3, I could give a rats ass about Uncharted but I LOVE rachet and clank, sly and cooper, jak and dexter, and crash bandicoot that and heavy rain and twisted metal is why I bought a ps3.

Amplitude4349d ago

Uncharted is a platformer...

Heavy Rain and Twisted Metal aren't platformers.

TheFirstClassic4349d ago

Sorry but even though uncharted has platforming elements you can't really call it a platformer. The way its done is more like assasins creed than anything.

IAmLee4349d ago

..It's *Sly Cooper, not Sly and Cooper.
You sure you own a ps3 or is it just an xbox you've painted black?

vikingland14349d ago

There are many platformers on XBL & PSN. They just aren't made by big developers.
super meat boy
splosion man
Ms. Splosion man
Fancy Pants
Fez
Trine
Outland
Limbo
Thats off the top of my head there are alot more though.

i think they should try to make a rayman 3D open world game for PS5 & Xbox Series X

PS-Gamer-1986851d ago

Still waiting for an origins and legends successor. My wife and i were addicted to these games at the time.

IanTH851d ago (Edited 851d ago )

I'll be curious if they make one. If they do, it won't look like they did, at least. Ubisoft retired the UbiArt framework used to make these games, apparently because the tools were too hard to work with across their many studios. Which is a bummer for sure, as I feel those games having a fairly unique aesthetic also benefitted them.

EDIT: Apparently I misremembered. They did say "hence the decision to temporarily put it aside", but they also said "it’s still there, and you will see other things using it". So it sounds like a new game could possibly still use UbiArt.

Fantastic game. Have great memories playing Origins on the Vita.

I will say though, around 2/3s of Origins' levels can actually be unlocked in the even better Rayman Legends which you can find dirt cheap these days.

Legends has so much variety and those music levels are amazing.

Gamer79851d ago

Loved the rayman games especially origins and legends.

MWH851d ago

Even the first Rayman game is still worth picking.
