What the Hell is Sony Planning for E3?

Week after week we keep seeing Sony announce game after game. Whether it be Little Big Planet Karting, Soul Sacrifice, God of War or Playstation All-Stars the games just keep coming and we're only weeks away from E3. It really asks the question, "Just what the hell is Sony thinking?".

Obviously they've got something major planned if they're able to announce these things so easily before E3. They must have either an incredible amount of exclusives they haven't even mentioned, or some major update for Vita/PS3. If not, they're the biggest idiots ever lol.

LOGICWINS4356d ago

Agreed. I'm sure the show will be Vita focused in terms of PS3/Vita compatibility. EVERY PS3 exclusive they show should be compatible with Vita, or else the slogan "Never stop playing" is bull. The two games I'm hoping they show for the PS3 are GG's next project, GTAV, and Agent. These three games plus demonstrations of The Last of Us, GOW: Ascension, and Battle Royale would make for a perfect conference in my eyes.

xursz4356d ago

Last Guardian trailer, Final Fantasy Versus XIII teased, Agent release date, DUST 514 showcase, Playstation Vita cross-play showcase (LBP, Playstation's Battle Royal, etc.), Killzone Vita, one more surprise Vita exclusive.

Gaming1014356d ago

lol so Sony is going to limit all of its announcements to one event when there are several events peppered throughout the year? Maybe given Sony's big announcements at E3, developers and publishers would rather be announced outside of E3 so they aren't overshadowed by other huge announcements? If you get overshadowed by other announcements you have completely wasted a lot of time and money going to E3 because now noone is talking about you - you need to think strategically about when you release info.

Dee_914356d ago

maybe they will show actual gameplay for those games announced or more news on the games they announced.

Freak of Nature4356d ago (Edited 4356d ago )

LBP carting could be added to your list to get it closer to perfection. And of course the last guardian gameplay footage along with **Media Molecule's new IP** would be uber Fantastic!

irepbtown4356d ago

I think new exclusives, and most likely important info for games which we are dying to hear about such as the Last Guardian and so on.

I'm usually not too bothered about E3 and I miss a lot of it (I live in UK). But I think this year I will fight time and stay awake to see what Sony will reveal. No adjective can describe my current feeling.

Sony, Amaze me...

Oh, and I think Sony are extremely confident hence they are announcing game after game before E3. Something big will go down. Something which no script writer can predict.

metsgaming4356d ago (Edited 4356d ago )

not necessarily, by announcing them early they get coverage yet if they announced them during E3 they would not get nearly as much attention especially because of nintendo's new hardware.

saladthieves4356d ago

What gives you the impression that they've already announced their big surprises before E3? We know what they've announced but not what they haven't. We'll have to wait. Judging from past conferences, Sony usually aims to top its previous conferences the previous year.

Ninty's hardware might garner some attention because it's new. It doesn't mean that all focus and attention will be drawn towards them. For once I'm more interested in what Sony has to show at E3 than Ninty's shady mysterious hardware.

metsgaming4356d ago (Edited 4356d ago )

im not saying this is all they have but just thinking about a reason why they would purposefully reveal some of their games this is one of the things i thought of. They could also have done it to make room for all their other announcements and they needed to clear up time. Fact is Nintendo will get the attention by the gaming "media" because of new hardware. They may drop some major bombs like a new Monster hunter vita (just an example think something really shocking) and it would overshadow their other announcements that by themselves are significant but overshadowed. Why throw everything at one day which maybe overshadowed by other stuff when you can reveal the stuff over time and make sure that it gains attention.

miyamoto4356d ago (Edited 4356d ago )

At least they have something to show for every kind of gamer out there unlike the other ....
This announcements are better than nothing or cramming them all up in a two hour show.

It will be vita stuff and also more gameplay footage from the announced stuff. To be honest who cares if things are announced before E3. It makes very little difference as long as they have some new footage to show. I can't remember but didn't Sony do this last year as well

BISHOP-BRASIL4356d ago

Yes they did and they also pretty much stated exactly why they do that.

E3 is a huge event, it usually holds tens of announcements of new games. By spreading the announces just before E3 they build up hype for their presentation as well as giving the media outlets plenty of time to do their stuff.

It's not that Sony is afraid of media focusing in other games, it's just that coverage at E3 is quite poor all around, mostly because every journalist in there need to be done as quickly as possible in order to attend to the next event, check the next booth or make the next interview.

It doesn't mean they won't have surprises in there, they usually have some, but there's merit to this "crazyness" of outing your announces before the main event.

WeskerChildReborned4356d ago

Yea that make's sense but i don't think it has to do with the PS4 but probably alot of more exclusives like you said, Maybe they're pushing the exclusives so PS4 can arrive soon.

zag4356d ago

Um, just wondering and I can't remember exactly but didn't sony say they where going to skip this years E3 and do something next year?

might have been around feb march

rob200904356d ago

Sony's press conference is at 6pm PST Monday, June 4th.

BattleAxe4356d ago

Hopefully they announce the shooter that Sony Santa Monica is working on.

Wintersun6164356d ago

That was fake. A shady ad on some site, and people reported it asked for gamertag and about achievements, not PSN name and trophies.

srcBFMVBMTH4356d ago (Edited 4356d ago )

Well, a game like God of War Ascension wouldn't need to be announced at E3 because it's pretty much guaranteed to sell. And also considering how well known Naughty Dog is, same would go for The Last Of Us. All they need to do to keep the hype fueled would just show gameplay/ trailers etc. New IP's (not counting PSABR and The Last Of Us) would need to be announced at E3 to get more coverage because........well they're new lol. I mean we got Sucker Punch, Media Molecule, Guerrilla Games, Quantic Dream, Evolution Studios, and Team ICO making new games for the PS3, and Team Siren, Sony San Diego, SCE Cambridge, SCE Liverpool, and SCE London working on new games for the PSVita. That pretty much screams a shit load of new IP's. And not to mention games like Agent, FFVXIII, and The Last Guardian. They seriously need release dates already -__-

showtimefolks4356d ago

weren't you here last year or the year before when hey announced most of their big games in advance. I see them giving ps3 30 minutes at the most and spending rest of time of Vita.

for Vita to succeed this E3 is very important so expect a new bundle with same price but a memory card and a game most likely uncharted.

last of us gameplay
sly 4
all-star battle royal

killzone 4 as a surprise
QD may debut its game after heavy rain
Valve could announce LFD 3 on sony's stage and LFD 1-2 coming to ps3

but i am not expecting any big surprises besides agent

ronin4life4356d ago

No, not necessarily... they do this every year.
Announcing everything in a very plotted out fashion and then detailing it all during the show is just how they have approached e3 for the last several years.

morkendo234356d ago (Edited 4356d ago )

as a old school gamer SONY has left us old school gamer behind. so most likely it'll be something NEW school vita and FPS,MMO'S we old school gamers be prepare for more FPS.............

vegnadragon4356d ago

cannon88004356d ago

How crazy (or stupid) do you guys think it would be if they showed the ps4 at e3? I would be amazed, what about you guys?

humbleopinion4356d ago (Edited 4356d ago )

I think that last year they similarly announced all the games before E3 and people asked the same "what are they hiding" question, but eventually no new games were announced except for Twisted Metal which already leaked months before that.

I think this is a smarter strategy that Sony is employing: announce the game in a dedicated press-conference for the initial coverage, and then use the stage time for actual gameplay presentation in E3. No point showing trailers with no interaction on stage when you can show them all throughout the year.

But having at least a single surprise is always good.

avengers19784356d ago

I bet there is a bunch of vita stuff, possible some PS3 updates, and a ton of games, but They could very well be unveiling there new console, In fact it wouldn't surprise me at all to see a new Playstation and Xbox at this years E3

Trusted sources say they will allow myself to reveal the long awaiting and what many of you thought to be cancelled....I'm not allowed to say It's In my contract that I do not...lol anyways hopefully sony don't show us everything before e3 and then show us again at e3 like they did last year

LOGICWINS4356d ago

Yeah bro me too. I'm dying to reveal the news that Sony has restricted me from revealing in my contract. I'll reveal the news on N4G...about ten minutes after Sony reveals it themselves, then I'll tell everyone "I TOLD U GUYS....I TOLD YOOOOU!!"

soundslike4356d ago (Edited 4356d ago )

Or you could take steps to get a fair share of anonymity and let us know early ;)

1. Go to your library
2. Make a new account using their computers
3. Release the goods
4. Watch the hype ensue.

Just sayin'

Pintheshadows4356d ago

So it's The Getaway or Eight Days?

Nykamari4356d ago (Edited 4356d ago )

It'sThe GetAway in Eight Days! LOL!!!!

dangert124356d ago

Yes...thats what I'm hoping for though I don't have a contract with sony all that was rubbish lol

Patriots_Pride4356d ago

My guess would be to expect alot of VITA announcements, which is not a bad thing for a VITA owner like me.

But if you really look at the big picture Sony has to push the VITA hard at E3 cause it not selling as well as the 3DS and you can bet that Nintendo will announce some new Mario, Pokemon or Zelda game for the 3DS - would love to see a 3DS Smash Bros.

metsgaming4356d ago

well its the vitas first big show since release if they dont focus on it then that would send a terrible message. Sony themselves already have supported it alot, its the third parties that got to get the lead out.

Sgt_Slaughter4356d ago

The Super Smash Bros 3DS game is coming out in 3-4 years time since the developers just got started after finishing Kid Icarus. It will have some cross-play with the Wii-U version.

NastyLeftHook04356d ago

What the Hell is Sony Planning for E3?

What isn't sony planning?

jacksonmichael4356d ago

Hopefully a price drop or a bundle for the PS3. I just got YLOD a couple days ago. Info on the Smash Bros ripoff would be sweet, too.

4356d ago
jacksonmichael4356d ago (Edited 4356d ago )

Way to be constructive with your criticism, everyone. My PS3 failed. I'm buying a new one. Sony is copying Smash Bros. If you think they aren't, you're deluding yourself, and for no good reason. The game will be great. Even if it wasn't the first of its kind.

Virtual_Reality4356d ago

Smash Bros is not the first of its kind neither.

jacksonmichael4356d ago

I knew someone would say that. Of course it isn't. That doesn't really give Sony an exemption.

mobhit4356d ago

Going by your logic, Nintendo copied too.

@car

The new boss did a interview in japan he wants to tap into the mobile market like nintendio so he give 0 fucks about gamers/fans

https://www.pushsquare.com/...

Redemption-6418d ago

@Cacabunga
You only speak for you and those who think like you, but most fans will support what they want. Playstation and PC fans are literally supporting Helldivers 2 and that is a gaas. Maybe you wouldn't, but many more would if they like it.

Huey_My_D_Long18d ago

@Redemption-64
Look, Im not making any judgement calls about this guy, but I will say that Helldivers 2 GaaS model is unique to Helldivers, and legit the only other game I can think of thats similiar was the Avengers game except HD2 pass is still better.
The fact that you can earn in game currency in a way that doesnt make you feel like you have to grind forever, as well you being able work on that pass that you bought...on your own time without a time limit...that right there is fucking huge to me, and I can't name any game other than avengers that avoided trapping players with FOMO logic...I think GaaS on HD2 shouldn't be compared to the rest of the industry...it should be copied.

Einhander197218d ago

Cacabunga

Helldivers 2...

Redemption-64

In Europe it's a 60 40 split favoring PC.
In the US its a 60 40 split favoring PS5.

So PlayStation owners supported the game just fine, it's not getting carried by PC or anything like that.

FinalFantasyFanatic18d ago

@just_looken,
I'm perfectly fine with the way Nintendo entered the mobile market, I never touched their mobile games, meanwhile, the console/handheld stayed the way it is. As for being a bean counter, he's probably going to reel in these massive budgets that Sony's studios have had lately, I haven't played Spiderman 2, but I cannot see how they almost tripled the budget for that game.

@Redemption-64,
That's an exception to the rule, I'm expecting a lot of these GAAS games from Sony to fail, to be fair, they only need a few to succeed, but I would have preferred that they put more of their resources into other types of games.

+ Show (3) more repliesLast reply 18d ago
DivineHand12518d ago

True their monetization is driving players away and at the same time, their decision to chop out content and convoluted systems is keeping new players away from the game.

Joe91318d ago

I don't think that will happen based on how things worked out at Naughty Dog now that we know what we do, seems they had the option to fully commit to live service games or stay making single player experences so they gave up on their live service game. We are not sure how things came about with Bend making a live service game but I hope that was not a forced situation. Sony doesnt seem like they are forcing studios to switch up but we will see, Sony's bread and butter is single player games it is how they dominated the console market.

Obscure_Observer18d ago

Yeah, I though Sony learned something from all their failures in the LS segment under Bungie´s disastrous leadership and supervision which led to games been cancelled, studios closed and all the people laid off.

Looks like Bungie still plays a major role in Sony´s LS initiative and Sony is not backtracking on their GaaS plans.

S2Killinit18d ago (Edited 18d ago )

Are we forgetting that Destiny is also a highly successful franchise? I feel like that definitely deserves mention here.

Besides, there is no reason why a person cant learn from past experiences.

Joe91318d ago

I agree, people act as if Destiny flopped when it came out lol it took 9 to 10 years for the numbers to fall yet people are still playing it add the success of Helldivers 2 no wonder Sony is going forward down this path.

S2Killinit17d ago

Personally, I see no problem with Sony also having service games as long as they make good ones, and more importantly they deliver the AAA story driven games that they are known for. So yeah, I agree 100% with you.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 17d ago
Christopher18d ago

I mean, this person made some pretty bad decisions at Bungie. I hope they've learned from them because I definitely don't see those type of ideas as good for PlaySation in general.

CrimsonWing6918d ago (Edited 18d ago )

Honestly, what’s to learn from? How to make people happily continuously dump money into a single game over its life-time? Buy season passes continuously for several years with a smile on our faces?

GaaS is a design decision that is everything wrong with this industry. The fact that Helldivers 2 did so well and people defend the monetization because it was $40 and is a fun game, scares the sh*t out of me to see that the door is open and all shift will probably be to replicate that in future games. We already know the ROI for traditional game dev cost isn’t doing it for them.

I thought with Jimbo leaving we’d see a change for the better… I’m not so sure now.

S2Killinit17d ago

Service games are being offered by everyone. Sony cannot afford to only create single player AAA games. No one can. They already said they will be doing both.

Abnor_Mal18d ago (Edited 18d ago )

Ps5 gamers in 2023 seemed to play more live service types of games, so regardless to how people feel about them, numbers don’t lie and Sony is going where the money is. I mean look at the excitement around Helldivers2, people are showing that they want live service games.

Christopher18d ago

They play long-time existing live service games like CoD, Fortnite, Apex Legends, Destiny 2, and the like. Mass majority of new live service games are considered failures and aren't moving gamers away from older games.

just_looken18d ago

Yep the huge issue with live service is they need paid players along with a reason to play them.

You forgot mobile market that also taps into that player base as well as the eve online style games there is only a certain amount of krakens/whales blind supporters compared to the amount of live service games we have its not sustainable math wise.

700 restaurants making food for every seat for 1000-3000 eaters just does not work out

Einhander197218d ago (Edited 18d ago )

Christopher

I am not a big live service fan and literally own zero of the games you listed, but that is not true, unless you call games that aren't the top games to be failures.

There are tons of live service games that are profitable.

Games don't have to be the biggest game ever they just need to make more than they cost.

I challenge you to show professionally prepared data that shows that more live service games fail than make enough to keep going.

Because all the data that I have seen shows that live service is less of a gamble than making a big AAA budget game which needs to survive off retail sales.

FinalFantasyFanatic18d ago

I sometimes wonder if we're at saturation point, where it's hard for a new game to join those ranks unless it's particularly exceptional, people only have so much time and money to devote to these types of games.

romulus2318d ago

Correction, they have no issue playing good live service games

shinoff218318d ago

Lol it's not even a quarter of the ps5s sold. Helldivers may have been a hit but let's not say most are enjoying it because truth is most(the real most ) don't care about it.

S2Killinit17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

I play what is fun. If a live service game is good I’ll play it as long as its not a money scheme which Helldivers is not.

And Im a single player gamer.

mastershredder18d ago

How do you kill a franchise that already been killed?
Destiny’s grind, cash-in-on-playbass-cha-Ching, and pop-culture-insertion mainstream-me-too bs totally killed any rep Bungie had. Sony/Bungie, if you are doing this to ward-off players, it’s already working.
