Molyneux Not Impressed With Wii U

Peter Molyneux has shared his thoughts on what we can expect from E3 in an email exchange with Kotaku. In the communications, Molyneux, who recently confirmed he’ll be involved in Spike TV’s coverage of E3, reveals the extent of his expectations.

Snookies124352d ago (Edited 4352d ago )

Just like how I wasn't impressed with Fable 3?

EVILDEAD3604352d ago

He laid down a few thoughts on some of what he was expecting for E3 and the exact quote was..

'Nintendo's slightly lack lustre Wii U is going to have to blow us away with better specs and great 1st party line up.'

He's not exclaiming to the the press 'I AM NOT IMPRESSED By WII-U'

He simply expressing what seemed like an overall consensus from the gaming and mainstream press after Nintendo debuted Wii-U at last year's E3.

The reveal almost seemed like it backfired for the company.

I think Peter is 100% correct on the assessment that Nintedo has to come of guns blazing to win over the world this go-around.

The First party line-up and the Specs are two are the biggest question marks for the system.

Peter simply pointed out the need for them to impress..and he's not wrong

His wording seems poor.
You put his meanings out in a clearer fashion than he did. For a person in his position and fame within the industry, he should be more aware of how he says things and try to avoid misunderstandings.

sarshelyam4351d ago

EVILDEAD, you infer that he has a far less critical stance on that, but the reality is that his wording was chosen carefully and is completely subjective. What person in the spotlight that wants to be taken seriously is going to word their opinions on those of the masses?

He is most certainly stating, in those words, that what was shown last year did not leave him impressed both on a hardware and software side.

EVILDEAD3604351d ago

@ sarsh

'He is most certainly stating, in those words, that what was shown last year did not leave him impressed both on a hardware and software side.'

LOL..so wait now your adding software to the mix? Your completely reaching at this point.,

Nintendo didnt show ANY specs or official software at all. So how is it possible that he is 'critical' of any of it.

It's simple..read the e-mail that he sent to Geoff and the fellas at GT, and you can easily see he is coming at it from an analyst side of the equation which is has been asked to do.

He didn't even bash the Wii-U, he quote was it was based on the last outing the Wii-U was 'slightly lackluster' and they need to blow everyone with better specs (which could mean than what is currently out this gen) and a great 1st party lineup which we all know is Nintendo's strength.

To say Wii-U's showing was slightly lackluster was being extremely kind. Literally, the day after Nintendo showed it their stock dropped 10%. Again, IMO misleading spin, which was designed to garner hits.

Well to be fair .. Wii U isn't really that great
we have to wait for E3.

supraking9514352d ago (Edited 4352d ago )

it cant be great when it isn't out yet, yes lets wait for E3 before we say stuff like that, though Sony will overshadow everything this year while Nintendo will show stuff most likely capable on PS3, maybe Xbox.

legend9114352d ago

The Wii U is great, why? It has core gamers, casual gamers, hardcore gamers, all the playstyles in one. Mind you also the iPhone and iPad people, including Facebook gamers. And so... if marketed correctly, what is your argument?

TekoIie4352d ago (Edited 4352d ago )

Oh Supraking951, the irony in your comment :P

"lets wait for E3 before we say stuff like that".

Followed by:

"though Sony will overshadow everything this year".

ronin4life4352d ago

@supra king
Ah, we'll see....
I think that the wiiu and 3ds individually will have more content than ps3 and vita combined at this show. Because if you look at Nintendos 3ds lineup across all regions and have been paying attention to their statements, you wil notice the 3ds Alone has more than 20 experiences waiting in the wings... and with the wiiu being a new console, it will definitely have a large showing.

But like we have all said already, we will just have to wait for e3.

stragomccloud4351d ago

System's not even out yet. This is quite an extreme case of knocking something before you try it. Because no one has. ...besides developers who seem to be having a blast with the thing.

Gameplay vids ensured i never spent a penny on a fable game or any other below par game. I got captain hindsight to thank for that.

sikapwach4351d ago

ooohh Fable 1 with the lost chapters expansion is great.

killerhog4352d ago

I'm sure many publishers/developers are not impressed/interested in wii-u. Wii-u will probably still be shovel-ware to many devs. by the time the next-gen consoles are out Xbox/ps4 the wii-u will be left behind with more shovel-ware and probably crappy ports.

StanSmith4352d ago

Stop trolling.

We already know developers are interested in WiiU. We already know it will be more powerful than PS3 & 360.

What we don't know is how much more powerful it will be. Regarding the PS4/Xbox 720, we won't know their power until those systems are announced.

Anyone claiming their superiority this early is kidding themselves. It is not guaranteed that they will be more powerful, especially with MS's Kinect Focus and Sony's money issues. Sony do not want another PS3 type launch on their hands.

jetlian4352d ago

we know epic isnt impressed with it compared to ps4/nexbox thats we do know!

TekoIie4352d ago (Edited 4352d ago )

*looks at Wii's success. Then looks at Wii U*

Killerhog. How do you fail to see that devs are interested in the Wii brand? They have created another innovative product which actually has more potential than the Wii remote.

PopRocks3594352d ago

jetlian, are you trolling? Epic has gone on record to say they actually do like the Wii U.

Here's an interview with Mark Rein. http://www.xbitlabs.com/new...

Here's another saying that Epic expects Wii U at E3 to "shock" audiences. http://www.slashgear.com/ep...

bothebo4352d ago

Agreed! No one is going to develop for the Wii U.

stragomccloud4351d ago

Troll much?
If you're really a gamer you wouldn't be so dismissive. Every console has something to offer. Which is why, I've always owned every console.

Derpy4352d ago (Edited 4352d ago )

That was my thought exactly, when I saw the headline. LOL

The Movies was the last game that I really liked that he did. I didn't like Fable 1, which I had for the original Xbox, so I have no one to blame but myself for when I decided to give him another chance and grabbed Fable 3 for the PC. What a terrible game. Unless he goes back to doing sims, which he was pretty decent at, I don't think I'll be buying any more of his games.

There is so much truth in that statement...

Cyb3r4352d ago

Im not impressed by any of his games

fermcr4352d ago (Edited 4352d ago )

I'm not impressed by your remark. Peter Molyneux has been involved with these games:

Bullfrog Productions
Fusion (1987) (designer/programmer)
Populous (1989) (designer/programmer)
Powermonger (1990) (designer/programmer)
Populous II: Trials of the Olympian Gods (1991) (designer/programmer)
Syndicate (1993) (producer)
Theme Park (1994) (project leader/lead programmer)
Magic Carpet (1994) (executive producer)
Hi-Octane (1995) (executive producer)
Genewars (1996)
Dungeon Keeper (1997) (project leader/designer)

Lionhead Studios
Black & White (2001) (concept/lead designer/programmer)
Fable (2004) (designer)
Fable: The Lost Chapters (2005) (designer)
The Movies (2005) (executive designer)
Black & White 2 (2005) (lead designer)
The Movies: Stunts & Effects (2006) (executive designer)
Black & White 2: Battle of the Gods (2006) (lead designer)
Fable II (2008) (lead designer)
Fable III (2010) (lead designer)
Milo and Kate (formerly known as The Dmitri Project) (cancelled) (lead designer)
Fable: The Journey (TBA)

Now tell me... what games have you been involved with ?

Cyb3r4352d ago

The same amount of games you're involved with

BitbyDeath4352d ago (Edited 4352d ago )

I accidentally clicked disagree.
Bullfrog games are awesome.

GraveLord4352d ago

Technically, no the console itself doesn't have amazing specs. But that controller is really interesting and I love the idea of not needing a TV to play games.

In the end the games are all that matter.

CaptainN4352d ago

You know the official specs?....or are you speaking on stuff you have no official knowledge of. Games do matter most, but don't go talking about things you don't officially know. Its things like that ,that get drones, bots and fanboys their flame bait in forums and posts.

Peter Molyneux's new game is set in Fable's Albion

Project currently codenamed MOAT.

JusttJD0099184d ago

M.O.A.T

Misleader of all time?

jznrpg184d ago (Edited 184d ago )

It’s between him and Phil. I’d vote Phil

Obscure_Observer184d ago

"It’s between him and Phil. I’d vote Phil"

If Phil were the man that made my life miserable, I would vote for him as well.

Regarding the topic, it could be both Peter and Phil working together.

M.O.A.T takes place in Albion, so it´s possible that Pete is working on new partnership with Xbox, which imo, is nothing but great news!

GhostScholar184d ago

What exactly has Phil mislead about? I can’t wait to hear the verbal diarrhea you come with.

Becuzisaid184d ago

Wait.

His name is still used as a selling point for new games? Seriously?

jznrpg184d ago

If anyone knows his name you have to be extremely skeptical that what he delivers will be anything like what he says it would be and that’s best case scenario.

RaiderNation184d ago

He's like the "Tom Clancy" of video games.

InUrFoxHole184d ago

Lol what the hell man?!?!?

Number1TailzFan184d ago

I remember Black & White (PC) but other than that I can only think of Fable, B&W was a pretty cool game tho at the time.

sagapo184d ago

Populous was another one designed by Peter, released before B&W, godlike game as well, pretty good too.

Giblet_Head184d ago

I quite liked Magic Carpet growing up.

Obscure_Observer184d ago (Edited 184d ago )

"His name is still used as a selling point for new games? Seriously?"

The guy is a gaming legend for gamers who actually knows and played his games, like Dungeon Keeper, Populous, Black & White and Fable for example.

Becuzisaid184d ago

I'm certain that most who actually know who he is would contest your use of legend. He's the living, human embodiment of false advertising.

Obscure_Observer184d ago

@Becuzisaid

There´s an abyss between false advertisement and bad games.

Most gamers will get excited for games from great gaming creators rather than focus on their exaggerated promises.

Kojima described his Xbox exclusive game as "very unusual like no one has ever experienced before, leveraging the cloud." He said all publishers he presented the project, called him mad and rejected his game but Microsoft, because it´s too crazy.

Is Kojima exaggerating? Obviously. It´s gonna be a bad game? Hardly.

Imagine a game where Peter Molyneux presents an extraordinary set of ideas that players will enjoy for years to come. Now imagine that this particular game will come out because it will never exist.

Peter Molyneux has high hopes for Playground's Fable

One of the biggest reveals at this year's Xbox Games Showcase was the latest Fable trailer. After a lengthy stint of silence, Playground Games gave us a look at bits of the title, albeit in a trailer that was mostly made up of CGI nonsense headlined by comedian Richard Ayoade, who is playing a rather frustrated giant.

Molyneux asked about what he thought about the Fable reveal.

A failed hack designer has high hopes for Fable lol incoming flop confirmed!

Godmars290285d ago

Well, he's not associated with it. Giving interviews talking about features never at any point mentioned with devs let alone introduced.

It might have a chance.

Godmars290286d ago

Peter Molyneux: Hideo Kojima minus ability and skill.

Godmars290286d ago

Think you mean ethics.

Also, whose defending Molyneux? Wasn't his last game a literal ripoff with him offering a prize but not giving it?

KwietStorm_BLM286d ago

I wonder if those hopes are higher or lower than Milo?

Peter Molyneux's studio 22cans suffers layoffs

From GI.biz: "UK developer 22cans has suffered a round of redundancies, GamesIndustry.biz has learned.

The studio, founded by Fable creator Peter Molyneux, has laid off multiple employees, although an exact figure has not been disclosed.

A spokesperson said: "Unfortunately, due to a number of factors including projects reaching a certain stage in their development, we can confirm that a number of roles at 22cans have been made redundant."

sourOG1155d ago (Edited 1155d ago )

Doesn’t that always happen with every studio lol? Contract workers for certain stages.

kythlyn1155d ago

I'm just surprised 22cans is still in business. They aren't communicating at all with their customers and they've abandoned their games in early access. Godus is still a mess that they're happy to keep selling without support. I kickstarted that game, and I have regrets.

Skywalker3331155d ago

Indeed, I was almost certain that they had closed down sometime ago :P

sourOG1154d ago

Wow that blows. I haven’t heard anything about them either, I just figured they were quietly working on something like ken Levine’s ghost story games.

Eamon1155d ago

Seriously, what is Peter Molyneux up to these days? In his prime, he was the most famous western developer in the world. Now he's doing f all.

njitram20001155d ago

If you look at the 22cans website...mobile games apparently

MasterChief36241155d ago

People became privy to his practice of promising big and delivering small. He is the perennial example of an artist that has huge ambition but not the resolve to follow through with those promises. I don't dislike him, as he has brought us some good games. But he is a constant punchline for me when I think of developers getting high and mighty.

Jericho13371154d ago

I saw an interview a few years ago saying he was inspired by the mobile gaming market and that anyone can become a “gamer”.

Such a shame, for all his critics he’s brought us some fantastic games and I’m sure he’d still be able to contribute something to the core gaming market.

lonewolf101155d ago

I'm surprised that they are still going to be honest.

fitofficial1155d ago (Edited 1155d ago )

They're not actually layoffs, they're fantastical multi-faceted journeys into lands of unimaginable unemployment giving the worker near-infinite freedom of choice.

jznrpg1155d ago

Yes . Classic Peter Molyneux
