Capcom Apparently Lost Faith in Dragon's Dogma

Capcom recently released sales projections for several big upcoming games, and paint a stark contrast to their past statements regarding Dragon's Dogma. Does the company not expect the lofty expectations set to be reached any more?

Capcom has screwed over the community with DLC and milked franchises nearly ever month this entire generation. Now they have finally released something that looks unique and interesting and they aren't going to support it? So weak. Especially since this is the first original thing they have done in ages.

Maybe it's better this way anyway. Although I was interested I can bet you they have chopped this game up so they can release unlockable costumes, weapons and quests for an arm and leg. Or should we wait for the release of Super Dragon's Dogma Gold Edition next year?

FFXI1014360d ago

"Capcom has screwed over the community with DLC and milked franchises nearly ever month this entire generation"

That's why I don't plan to purchase any game from Capcom, SQ(except Hitman) and no more Call of Duty for me. I might just go back to PC gaming since Diablo 3 and Guildwars 2 are coming out soon.

MysticStrummer4360d ago

You took a lowered sales projection and decided that meant they wouldn't support the game? O.o I'm sure they're looking at the dropping numbers on all the sales charts and revising their expectations, which is what they should do. Funny how a new IP being projected to sell 1.5 million is considered bad now.

Duoma4360d ago

I partially agree with everything you said and heres why. As a collective whole the gaming community continues to support DLC even though we as a whole bitch about it.

Its funny to see people up in arms on various web forums like ign, gamefaqs, here and other outlets and then go onto internet game streams to see the same people turn around and buy the game AND continue to bitch about DLC. Until gamers as a collective whole say F*ck you capcom and your DLC they are going to continue to be greedy.

P.s. I completely agree with mysticstrummer. The lowered sales expectations are nothing new and has been standard proceedure in any business. If the overall industry as a whole is seeing lower than normal sales then of course expectations will be lowered.

Rockefellow4360d ago (Edited 4360d ago )

MysticStrummer, the opening paragraph blatantly states that 1.5 million for a new IP is fantastic.
*Edit* I thought it did, I guess it was edited or something. It is mentioned in there, somewhere

MysticStrummer4360d ago

"If they’re expecting a sleeper hit here, well, they’re suggesting it’ll be more like a coma."

This is what I'm referring to. In an earlier paragraph it says 1.5 million isn't bad, but then you have the above line, which contradicts that.

Frankfurt4360d ago

What's unique about Dragon's Dogma, pray tell? Pawns that don't stop talking?

Baka-akaB4360d ago (Edited 4360d ago )

Oh yeah you're that jaded gamer that saw everything in gaming ... maybe you could share your wisdom and find a game where i would say , casually use ice spell to create a climbing stair so i could land on the back of a dragon , keep climbing onto it , then proceed to pierce its head ?

Trebius4359d ago

If this game has disc locked content i wont be buying it for sure. Ill just get it from gamefly instead. Looks like a good game, but principles are principles.

brish4360d ago

I really liked the demo but it's a Capcom game so I won't be getting it on release day.

I'll wait to see if it contains disk locked content or not. If it does then it's either a bargain bin purchase or maybe I'll just skip it completely.

showtimefolks4359d ago

i know many will hit disagree but capcom has lost it this gen

they release way too much dlc
on disk dlc
sequels after sequels after sequels

their own home grown developers have left them for american based publishers or forming their own studios

and this game will be successful because we the fans see the potential and see something interesting from capcom in a long long time

b_one4360d ago

if this game will be DLC Fail-o-rama, i wont buy any Capcom title in other way then bargain bin

WeskerChildReborned4360d ago

Yea i'm still contemplating whether i should get RE6 cause i really enjoyed the survival horror and RE6 look's to be leaving that genre like RE5 did.

b_one4360d ago

im thinkin about Dragons Dogma ;)

JellyJelly4360d ago

I loved the demo, it gets better everytime you play it. Certainly hope the game won't be chopped up into tiny little DLC pieces...

I'm waiting for the CO-OP dlc :)

Titanz4360d ago

Though I'd take a Lost Planet Wii U edition over the latter (which would be a Dragon's Dogma Wii U edition).

Edward754360d ago

@ neckbear. (does that mean you have a neck as thick and hairy as a bear?).
I am with you, and glad for putting up that link.

Has anyone thought that by putting 1.5m estimates how it will look for them whe. It sells over that amount? It'll be a "win" for them across the board.

Them saying this grand ole "10million" number and estimating for reals 1.5 is very smart as far as company goals goes. When they do hit over 1.5 mil, which I firmly believe they will, it makes the company look really good and they were pleasantly surprised. Companies have been doing this for years to make themselves look good to investors throughout the years.

Good business.

Now 7 mil for RE6 is going to be the tough number to hit.

Danniel14360d ago

Bubbles for being sensible mate.

joab7774360d ago

Does anyone not think that when they said 10 million that they were crazy and obviously overhyping a game that would not sell that many if it were really, really good. They are releasing a week after diablo 3 and max payne 3. May is owned by rockstar and preorders for diablo 3 are historic. Add game of thrones to the mix, which already has a huge following and they may be a tad pessimistic. If it were a year in which skyrim, kingdoms of amalur amd the witcher 2 hadnt released and rpg fans were starving...Also, by the time ppl are done playing these games it will b september. With that being said, it may do well despite this, but not 10 million...10 million?!!!!

Rockefellow4360d ago

It was definitely overhyped, but the thing is, I think they believed it. They didn't just mention 10 million once, they drove it into the ground.

Neckbear4360d ago (Edited 4360d ago )

They mentioned they felt the game was good enough to sell ten million, not that they expected to sell ten million. Their expectations for the game were always of 1.5 million copies.

You should go and read those interviews when they mention that figure again, rather than speculating blindly for whatever reason.

EDIT: Even in last year's shareholder event, Dragon's Dogma was expected to sell 1,500,000 copies. See Page 14 of this document, dating from the previous fiscal year:

joab7774360d ago

Thats good to know. It makes a huge difference. I really want to play it and im gonna try my best to do so. Hopefully in the summer. But, i need to finish batman, kingdoms, a second playthrough of me3 & 1 1/2 of the witcher 2. I love rpgs and the only thing that im worried about is the story. I liked the demo alot but how do i chose between that and game of thrones or max payne if i just go for a game thats gonna b great. Im glad i dont hav a pc right now cuz i really wanna play diablo 3 too. But, it does make more sense because they were not gonna sell 10 million. I think people just like to call others out. That may b fine but not if it isnt what they said.

Rockefellow4360d ago

Neckbear, I understand that it was that, but there expectation was always 1.5 million? They seem to be flip flopping around. In the article, it states that they think they'll easily clear 1,000,000 in Japan, alone, and go as far as to say it was assured.

dorron4360d ago

No way were they selling 10 millions from a new IP...

Me,tobe honest, I liked Dragon's Dogma demo, but this is Capcom, so this game will have lots of DLC and a complete edition in a close future, so maybe when the Ultimate Edition is at 20€ I'll buy it.

Capcom Is 'Aware' of Dragon's Dogma 2 Frame Rate Issues on PC

Responding to a query about frame rate problems from IGN, Capcom said in a statement that performance issues on PC may be linked to the heavy amount of CPU demanded from NPCs in the game.

"In Dragon's Dogma 2, a large amount of CPU usage is allocated to each character and dynamically calculates the impact of their physical presence in various environments. In certain situations where numerous characters appear simultaneously, the CPU usage can be very high and may affect the frame rate," a Capcom representative told IGN. "We are aware that in such situations, settings that reduce GPU load may currently have a limited effect; however, we are looking into ways to improve performance in the future."

just_looken30d ago

What a load of bull there blaming the npc load for there poor performance? the new hitman games has way more going on beyond that they are saying any pc cpu is not powerful enough?

In the article it is also stated a ign reviewr got motion sickness playing ps5/pc version but still enjoyed it? like wow if that was me i would knock it down alot and asked for a patch asap.

So those about to play thank denuvo get a barf bucket if your on pc play 720p because like cites skyline its going to be a unoptimized cpu mess.

Man those on series s/steam deck/rog ally rip :(

Am I hearing that right, that reviewer with a 4090 is getting drops into the 20s when there's several NPC on screen. Sorry but there's zero excuse for that. BG3 had hundreds at a time on screen and that's a pretty game. What an absolute piss poor engine

just_looken29d ago

@andy

Yes the is correct but every review is giving it a past and or saying that its great that the performance is like the first ps3/xbox one game.

2012 20-30fps 2024 20-30fps dragons dogma keeping things the same reviewers like that apparently

just_looken29d ago

IGN put up a video showing the 4090 struggling aswell as console performance all versions are like the first game with fps issues.Remember dlss 3.0 can almost double your fps like that cyber punk video so without dlss on your looking at 30fps on the most powerful gpu that is out right now.

Cacabunga29d ago

Capcom where is Deep Down???

Tapani29d ago

@andy85 At launch BG3 dropped to under 30fps at the final chapter on 4090. I played the game at launch and had that experience. And that was with a 5800X3D. Everything watercooled and fine-tuned CPU/GPU and memory at 32GB with good timings, and a fast SSD etc.

just_looken29d ago

@tapani

I am sorry are we comparing a AA game with a small budget with alot going on 24/7 to a AAA game funded buy the billion dollar capcom?

You are right yes but that was patched and that team loves there community but if the first dogma said anything we should expect a patch or 2 but that is it.

andy8528d ago

@Tapani indeed but that was hundreds of NPCs. Not a few. It's piss poor

Can they be aware of the need for 60fps on consoles plz

just_looken29d ago (Edited 29d ago )

Oh no kidding that "pro" model better have a 60fps mode.

But that ps5 pro PSSR will no doubt be a hold back as i see very few devs make a fsr/dlss/pssr game like really sony why did you spend millions to make upscale tech on the 6800 when amd already has fsr 3.0 just sitting there.

I remember the ps4 pro patches that dwindle over time yes new games had the modes but they were not standard and that was without the base ps4 using another upscale tech.

Edit:

In tldr form devs now make fsr upscale for ps5/xbox PSSR upscale tech on ps5 pro game then dlss/fsr upscale tech pc version and we also have intels xess just insane workload

Eonjay29d ago

'Oh no kidding that "pro" model better have a 60fps mode.'

Perhaps but only if Capcom addresses the issues first. substantially more powerful hardware is struggling.

Furesis29d ago

I mean it's not helping but this is something more than that. Plenty of games with denuvo that work fine

just_looken29d ago

That could be also taxing for sure sense the ps5 also supports that dreadful drm

This is also running off the RE engine remember those re vids with the denuvo drm on/off

MrDead29d ago (Edited 29d ago )

Project Zomboid a simple looking isometric game has a similar problem as the Zombies are CPU heavy. If this is the issue GPU tweeks won't do anything, you need less calculations per NPC or more static NPCs

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH29d ago

Well that’s just great…looks like I’ll be holding off on buying this on PC until it’s fixed. If I wanted low frame rates I’d just buy it in console smh…

Well there is a lot of laid off talent out there. Very smart of them to target that. Plus if it’s in Japan, that’s a great place to live.

"Won't someone think of the shareholders!!" wwwaaaahhh

Eonjay43d ago

It funny with this news, their stock price took a small hit. But you know what... thats like too damn bad. We have to stop letting shareholders run the industry into the ground.

FinalFantasyFanatic42d ago

Seriously, you have to spend money to make money, I think some companies and share holders forget that, If you don't pay enough, you can't attract the best talent, or possibly even enough staff for the company to function properly.

Eonjay43d ago

I really approve of Capcom for doing this and will show my appreciation by supporting them. There are a few Capcom games I need to get... and this includes Dragon's Dogma 2. Support companies that support the people working in the industry over shareholders! REMEMBER: Shareholder's don't make games!

Darkegg42d ago

25% sounds like a lot, but it's from $1,560 to $2000 per month. That's $24,000 a year. Unless u became a monk, that is below poverty line.
