PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale - PS3 Preview

I have to admit, going into this preview I did not have the highest of expectations. A developer I'd never heard of, making a game that combined all my beloved PlayStation favorites into what some people had already dubbed a Super Smash Bros. clone? I definitely had my doubts... -PSLS

Hopefully, but I'm a bit on the fence on how the devs will work in whichever characters. Would Sweet Tooth bring his ice cream truck against Kratos?

Actually, that thought makes me wanna see how this turns out!

T3mpr1x4374d ago

Yes, yes he does. Kratos can counter it with moves of his own.

Lifewish4374d ago

not sure how awesome it will be but i am interested.

Hype! More smash bros is fine by me.

stormeagle64374d ago

I like the idea of the super bar, which is one thing I always wanted in Smash Bros. The Final Smash ball introduced in Brawl is ok but it's way too random.

D3stinySm4sher4374d ago

I've said it elsewhere, I'll say it again. I am a huge fan of SSB, so I'm sure I will enjoy this game as a result, BUT I am severely disappointed with how BLUNTLY it is cloning SSB. It's not just in the concept, that is fine and awesome, it is in the actual gameplay formula, even down to stealing MOVES of characters.

It's a little too blunt but if the game works well, shows enough spark, and - oh, right, its online actually WORKS - it could serve as a suitable non-traditional fighting game fix until the SSB4 comes around.

I'll remain cautiously optimistic.

Mikhail4374d ago

You are right. Still, they came from Santa Monica Studios and since this is a small preview, I expect they can tweak things and bring features that can differentiate it from SSB.

I assure you, every reviewer would point out the SSB clone thing and I think a majority of them would see it as a negative.

&D3stiny there are all ways going to be a recurring character or set of moves in fighting games because they've tried all possibilities, for example, killer instant & street fighter both have black boxer, the ability to take another characters power is common, mortal kombat, ssb, street fighter and killer instant all have it,a finisher move after you beat your opponent is in some game, I don't Know why people are make a big deal about this because most ideas in video games came from either another game or movie, book,tv show.

Machioto4374d ago

@Jon I was on kotaku and some pointed out that the ssb game was inspired by a game called the outfoxies produced by namco and some of the people who worked on it did ssb.

jonboi244374d ago (Edited 4374d ago )

Actually gameplay formula is very different to Smash.

In Smash its beat the dude up till you can knock him of the screen. PASBR is beat people up till you can use your super moves to KO someone. You see in PASBR, there are no health and thus far the only way to score a KO is by hitting someone with a super move. Thus game formula is similar but different and strategies is different. And if you know anything about fighting games than you know how changing and adding gameplay mechanics can change the entire game.

Yes it easy to see that the moves characters use are a rip offs but to me I see Smash and see they ripped of moves from Street Fighter and every other fighting game before them. So they only thing original from Smash in my eyes is the damage and knock out system. It wasn't the first fighting game to combine popular characters from different franchises, I believe KOF did it first. Not the first fighting game to use items. Not the first fighting game to have environmental hazards, that's World Heroes. Not the first one to use platforms in a fighting games, Battle Monsters did that first. So really as much I love Smash Bros and Melee (Brawl was ok), it wasn't all that original. But hell did it re-invent wheel, plus it was hella fun and that's all that matters.

i cant see how can anyonne deny the huge resemblance to SSBB.

"BUT I am severely disappointed with how BLUNTLY it is cloning SSB"

Why? You said you are a huge fan of Super Smash Bros, so if Playstation All Stars turns out to be Super Smash Bros with sony characters with little to no differences, then why on earth would that disappoint you?

Are you one of those people who are so insistent that developers be completely and utterly original with their franchises or else you are disappointed by them? Seriously, how does this bother you? Do you think that credit is being taken away from SSB? Because that would be ridiculous. And besides, I'm pretty sure SSB isn't even the first fighting game to bring together different worlds and crossovers/characters.

When I play a great/unique game of a genre that there aren't a lot of, I want developers to create more versions of that, I want more of that type of experience. I don't get angry and think "NO, YOU MUST NOT MAKE THAT GAME BECAUSE [so and so] ALREADY MADE IT. F--- you copycats", I think "YES! I get to play a new interpretation of an amazing game/genre".

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale Launched 10 Years Too Early

Though PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale is a bit of a cult classic, it could have been a big hit if it launched in 2022 instead of 2012.

It wouldn't have mattered, Sony would've rushed it out and left it to die. More so now than before with their focus now being on SP narrative driven AAA games.

CrimsonWing69513d ago

Oh, but somehow Smash Bros. 64 made it work?

It just couldn’t compete with Smash Bros. and it wasn’t a free-to-play game like Multiversus.

PapaBop513d ago

I think it released at the right time. It's just after the success of Smash and Multiversus, it's finally time for a sequel.

spoonard513d ago

I'd be all in on a remake or remaster of the original. I enjoyed it because I didn't sit there and compare every aspect to SSB. I just enjoyed it as it was.

Magatsuhi513d ago

Sony should make part 2 and dump a good amount of money on it. Scrap super only kills and it's bound to succeed.

Father__Merrin513d ago

Yes the power kills spoilt it completely WTH was they thinking you should have hp bar that's it

God of War: Ragnarok Weirdly Makes PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale Canon

God of War: Ragnarok has plenty of fun references to PlayStation history, but now fans have discovered a conversation that calls back to PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale — the crossover fighting game released for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.

Nyxus521d ago

I wouldn't say canon. More like an easter egg.

Deathdeliverer520d ago

That’s interesting. It actually does make it canon lol. He mentioned it in a mainline game. I’d say that’s pretty cool.
