Nintendo 3DS To Be Sold For A Profit By September

"For the Nintendo 3DS, its hardware has been sold below cost because of its significant price cut in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2013," the company said today.
"However, Nintendo expects to cease selling it below cost by the middle of the fiscal year ended March 31, 2013."

I thought the 3DS was already profitable hardware going off of some of the users' comments here.

It's pretty hard to believe that Sony could sell a monster like the Vita for $250, but Nintendo can't sell a weak system like the 3DS for $170 and not turn at least a small profit.

The 3DS is hardly superior to the PSP, in terms of processing hardware (well.. the GPU is about 2x as good, but mobile GPUs that good have existed for like 5 years). Its only the screen, and the extra memory (all 64MB of it), that really costs extra. I doubt it costs even $150 to make.

Indeed, I love all the 3DS fanboys shouting their numbers oblivious the the fact the 3DS is hemorrhaging money. I have a 3DS myself and a vita, picked up kid icarus recently, good game and actually fairly fresh considering what has been released on the 3ds so far. It is hard to bring myself away from the vita though.

Yet Vita isn't selling and Sony is hemorrhaging money.

Seriously though, i sold my 3DS a while back. Looking to buy a Vita once LBP releases. I'm waiting until E3 though to see what is coming for Vita in the future. If there isn't a whole lot, then i'll just stick to WiiU this year.

I was just showing it works both ways. I couldn't give a monkeys about Sony & Nintendo's financial state as long as the great games keep coming.

As for being off topic, Vita was mentioned before i commented on it. It's just that i mentioned it in a negative way that my post becomes off topic. Surely any mention of Vita is off topic when this article is to do with Nintendo and the 3DS.

Sony confirmed that the Vita would be profitable from day one after all those rumors were going on (Unless you mean Sony as a whole company which is pretty off topic as far as the handheld talk goes).

Edit: Also, the Vita is selling pretty well globally except for Japan (In NPD March report, the PS Vita sold 200-225k for it's second month. In Europe, the PS Vita sold 301K for it's second month).

Judging by some of your recent comments, you seem to have an issue with anyone who says anything negative about Sony, yet you are ready to drag down Microsoft or Nintendo. I'm sensing you have a strong loyalty to Sony for some reason.

The vita is 250 but it uses expensive memory cards so that you have to purchase where as the 3ds uses sd so your not going to spend a fortune on a big 32 gb media

This makes me worried for the vita. It hasn't been having as much luck as the 3DS (when we compare sales over the same period of time). More games will put it in the spotlight tho! Looking forward to an RPG on the vita that can rival the top games in that genre on 360 and PS3 like skyrim!
