Top 8 Overrated Video Games

411media writes: This week we will be looking at the Top 8 Most Overrated Games of all time, and I will be honest I am slightly anxious at this one. I was warned by a poster on the column section that I should never do overrated games as I am generally very nice about games, and this will only lead to me becoming overly negative like the rest of the internet. So stupidly I put it into the choices for the column, but I think this will be my last negative column for the foreseeable future. That's audience participation for you! Anyway, I will be judging this list on games that were overhyped, over praised and generally labelled to a standard I never really thought they deserved.

I agree with this whole list besides the Halo franchise. The Halo franchise is the most influential, successful exclusive 1st person shooter franchise in the world today. With each iteration the Halo franchise provides new ideas and innovations that usually go on to set new standards for the FPS genre in the future. Also to this very day there has never been an inferior release in the Halo universe.

Many games have been labeled "Halo killer" in the past that have gone on to become inferior product. Lacking the award winning gameplay, and amazing atmosphere that put Halo in a class of its own. Halo still remains the ruler of the land of the shooter, and this article is attempting to remove credit from Master Chief and the legacy that is Halo.

Rated E For Everyone

Ranma14384d ago (Edited 4384d ago )

I didnt care whether FF1 to FF10 was over rated, because they were good games.

FF11-14 are sh*t games, no world map and or little exploration, unlikeable characters, rubbish story in those games (we can ignore online ones)

I think most people should not care whether a game is over rated or not so long as its good and they like it

LAWSON724384d ago

it so so sad people disagree with this. Also who ever picked these games can go suck ****.

GTA IV is a true masterpiece and its still the best open world game this gen even though it was released 4 years ago

deep_fried_bum_cake4383d ago

Awesome_Gamer

Is GTA IV the only open world game that you've played this gen? Sounds like it. While it is still a 9/10 game in my opinion, I wouldn't put it near the top open world games this gen and I'm quite shocked that it didn't make #1 in this list.

It has a lot of issues. Main examples being a pretty boring main character and a general lack of replay value if you've already completed the story once. I thought that the multiplayer was very well done though.

My main problem with it is how much they changed it from being a GTA game. They removed the stupidness from the game for the most part, forced annoying characters like florian and roman on us and to top it off there was a crap soundtrack.

Dunno why they have said that tetris is overrated, it's simple, addictive and can be picked up and played whenever. I'd say that's pretty good.

NastyLeftHook04384d ago

actually i think halo should be #1 most overrated game.

MrDead4384d ago

Just think of all the wasted skin cells from your finger tips that went into typing this, you could have used them on more important things like picking your nose. Now here I am wasting my own cells typing about how pointless this article was, can you see what you have started? In a few hours time you would have caused the pointless waste of millions of cells..... I hope you can live with that.

fastrez4384d ago (Edited 4384d ago )

Being overrated is a question of personal opinion. Opinions count for very little in gaming today.

ZeroWil4384d ago

Here are the games that are listed, so you don't have to waste your time:

8. LittleBigPlanet 1
7. The Guitar Hero series
6. Dead Rising 1
5. GTA IV
4. Halo 1
3. Elder Scrolls IV
2. Final Fantasy (most of them)
1. Tetris

The author doesn't really go into why these games are overrated. For example, he wasn't a big fan of sci-fi shooters, and couldn't understand the praise, therefore Halo is included in this list. Terrible article.

Xeoset4384d ago

Surely yellow journalism like this should have the website domain banned from the aggregator?

N4G was once quite reputable, but now it's a ghost town and the primary reason is playing "the game". These glorified blogs know how to manipulate N4G to get hits and N4G lets them, yet lose fans.

The more fans, the more ad views, the more profit. So surely it's in N4G's best interest to start banning sh!t like this in order to get the old community back?

Nerdmaster4384d ago

He did say why he thinks each one of these games are overrated.

Here's what he said about Halo:
"This was built up as a game changers, and sure it was for Microsoft as it saved the Xbox from dying a quick death, but for the first person shooter genre this was really nothing new."

And he's completely right.

kesvalk4383d ago

the next time you throw a grenade in a FPS without needing to change your main weapon, remember that was halo: combat evolved that first made this mechanic famous...

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies17m ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

CrimsonWing6911h ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker11h ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo10h ago(Edited 10h ago)

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing6910h ago(Edited 10h ago)

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

If this is true, I hope it leads to Morrowind getting remade next.

-Foxtrot5d ago

I thought they’d go for Morrowind first to be honest but this is a welcoming surprise to tide us over before ES6

TheColbertinator4d ago

Well said. Exactly my thoughts too.

Tedakin5d ago

Unreal Engine isn't efficient for open world games, so I question the reliability of this story.

isarai4d ago

Yeah, 1st thing that came to my mind too, although i CAN see it being likely for ease if use, but it's not going to run very well if so

Tacoboto4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I'd wonder if it would just be exploiting Unreal for graphics but the underlying engine/logic is still the original framework.

Like how we had the graphical remakes of Halo Anniversary, Tomb Raider I-III, and Demon's Souls.

Could also end up a disaster like the GTA Trilogy

mkis0074d ago

I have heard that too but even if it's modified isnt arkham knight UE?

Fragslayer4d ago

"remake will run both an Unreal Engine 5 project and the old Oblivion project. For instance, new graphics are rendered in the Unreal Engine 5 project, but most of the gameplay and physics are still done on the original Oblivion engine"

So with this logic it'll run just fine using UE5 tool sets on top of Gamebryo's engine or maybe even Creation Engine, who knows.

Hopefully modders can fix the aged combart in this game if this is true. Enemies leveling up with you broke and defeated the whole purpose of leveling up.

Fragslayer4d ago

Yeah it could use some tuning for sure hence the need for a Remake not a Remaster. I'm surprised it's even a conversation within them group which makes me skeptical it's Oblivion. I wouldn't say they shouldn't level up at all though maybe just a leave them a couple levels behind to appease the masses.
