Super Mario Overkill: Is There Such A Thing As Too Much Mario?

Chris Buffa (Modojo): Super Mario 3D Land is less than a year old, and Nintendo has already announced another Mario title for 3DS, New Super Mario Bros. 2, set to launch in North America this August. Keep in mind this is in addition to Paper Mario 3DS, which may arrive sometime late 2012, early 2013. Of course, there's also Mario Tennis Open, due out end of May. Hell, Mario Kart 7 was last December.

i burnt out on mario years ago

dark-hollow4381d ago (Edited 4381d ago )

no it isnt!

i dont know why people give final fantasy a free pass for releasing bazillion games, spin offs while bashing nintendo for doing the same.

even if you said "dont count the spin off"
how often the main mario games on consoles get released?

lets see, lrts count the main sequels.

three mario games on NES
one on snes.
one on n64
ONE on the gamecube
three on the wii.

is THAT bad compared to other franchises?

same for legend of zelda

two on nes.
one on snes
two on n64
two on gamecube
one on wii (TW is basically the same on GC}

people, those franchises are 25 YEARS OLD!!!
OF COURSE they have a lot of released games.

for me? if they keep the quality of their franchises i would gladly buy them till the end of times

I do want a new 2D mario platform for the 3DS (remember people, we don't have a 2D portable mario for this device yet, Mario 3D land is a different gameplay) but I want something different, I am tired of the "New Super Mario" brand. We had a "New" game on DS, Wii and probably Wiiu (New Super Mario Mii).

I want a different style... but you know how it works with mario. Everyone will complain but everyone will play.

I will play it and probably enjoy it just like I did with New Super Mario Bros Wii.

iamtehpwn4381d ago

Well, Final fantasy gets a "Free pass" because everything from the characters to the gameplay is brand new with each iteration.

But that's also why I don't mind Mario games. Mario Galaxy, Sunshine, Mario 64, were all very fresh experiences. Mario will never get old to me as long as he keeps going into new, territory and exploring new ideas. In fact, that's what I love about Mario.

DA_SHREDDER4381d ago (Edited 4381d ago )

you are comparing Mario to FF?! lol! Anyways, Mario games rule. They have been good since the 2600 days. You can play the original Mario Bros. in Mario 3 on the NES, but the 2600 version was so dope and ahead of its time.

arbitor3654381d ago

lmao. nintendo fanboys cant handle a dissenting opinion.

tweet754381d ago

no even after playing mario games from 1987 I still get a warm feeling when one is announced. I know its going to be a joy to play.

ThePsychoGamer4381d ago

I'd say yes, especially when every mario game I've played seem to be missing something.

Khordchange4381d ago

Mario Kart, 3d Mario, and 2d Mario are all completely different games.

-Alpha4381d ago (Edited 4381d ago )

Right, milking the name =/= milking the game.

It's not like COD where you have one concept released annually, Mario games have a lot of variety to them, from classic 2D side scrolling to fully 3D platformers, to light RPGs, racing, and party titles. If the games are great, there is nothing wrong with what Nintendo is doing. However, I can understand people not standing Mario and wanting Nintendo to make some new character/setting. While Nintendo may stick to Mario, there are lots of Nintendo exclusives that offer something other than Mario, especially on the DS.

majiebeast4381d ago (Edited 4381d ago )

Double standards gotta love em. When any other franchise release's 1 game per 2 years. They are talking about milking when its mario with in 8-10 months its amazing. It doesnt look any different from every 2d mario since super mario. This doesnt look any different from New super mario bros on the DS. If it is nintendo has proved me wrong but i really doubt it from the screenshots.

3GenGames4381d ago

Because those games are so many different Genres, spinoffs, engines, etc. It's not same shit different year/name all the time.

dark-hollow4381d ago

mario MAIN sequels dont get released until 3-5 years has passed!'

"i really doubt it from the screenshots"

and THATS whats wrong with nintendo haters!
they watch couple screenshots and assume that its a rehash without actually playing the game.

Am I missing something? It looks exactly the same, just higher resolution… Is this sarcasm?

specialguest298d ago

Yes, you're not observant if you think it looks exactly the same. It immediately appeared different to me from the start. Mario's 3D model will always be the same, so not much difference there. However, the animation they've given the Super Mario Wonder makes it look more like a CGI Mario animation where as the New Mario Bros game looks more like typical video game animation movements

__SteakDeck__298d ago

@specialguest Yeah those animations are insane.

FinalFantasyFanatic298d ago

You really didn't notice the difference? It's really obvious, I was surprised when I first saw the trailer.

Asplundh298d ago

"Am I missing something?"

Your glasses maybe?

Juancho51298d ago

This Mario game looks great, getting a switch for this and Mario RPG. CANT WAIT, TITS JACKED.

Profchaos298d ago

Yeah I liked how much more emotion could be conveyed through the new style at first glance I didn't see much difference but then rewatching the trailer I'm seeing more and more animations that remind me of the Mario artwork from the manual of smb3

Outlawzz298d ago

I hated the new super Mario bros Style. This new one seems a lot more expressive and less generic. I hope it's a good game

shinoff2183298d ago

I prefer the 2d Mario's. Me and my girl have played them all together and mario galaxy , Mario odyssey. The 2nd player option is extremely eh

Nintendo Needs a 'New' New Super Mario Bros. Series

Nintendo hasn't given attention to the New Super Mario Bros. series in years, and it may be time to give the 2D platformer something 'new' to do.

Mario as a 2D platformer has been around for nearly 40 years. What else is there that a 2D Mario platformer can do besides throw in a random gimmick like Cat-suit Mario (yes I know that was a 3D Mario, but I'm just making a point - gimmicks are not innovations)? The entire premise is go from point A to point B, collect a couple things on the way, jump over obstacles, and reach and exit. I hoped at one point that Mario Maker would be the next big 2D Mario thing, but that just quickly became a series of stupid-complicated autorun levels. I say just build off of Odyssey for a few games and innovate in that direction.

And for the record I love 2D Mario games, and if anyone can find a way to innovate something it's Nintendo - BUT the New SMB series of games wasn't all that great and to me it's just the limitations of the genre at this point.

CrimsonWing69400d ago

It’s crazy to me that nothing has come close to Mario 3 and Mario World. Those are the apex of Mario games for me. Yea 64 was revolutionary and I even like Odyssey, but I would choose 3 over any Mario game.
