Super Mario Overkill: Is There Such A Thing As Too Much Mario?

Chris Buffa (Modojo): Super Mario 3D Land is less than a year old, and Nintendo has already announced another Mario title for 3DS, New Super Mario Bros. 2, set to launch in North America this August. Keep in mind this is in addition to Paper Mario 3DS, which may arrive sometime late 2012, early 2013. Of course, there's also Mario Tennis Open, due out end of May. Hell, Mario Kart 7 was last December.

how often the main mario games on consoles get released?

lets see, lrts count the main sequels.

three mario games on NES
one on snes.
one on n64
ONE on the gamecube
three on the wii.

is THAT bad compared to other franchises?

same for legend of zelda

two on nes.
one on snes
two on n64
two on gamecube
one on wii (TW is basically the same on GC}

people, those franchises are 25 YEARS OLD!!!
OF COURSE they have a lot of released games.

for me? if they keep the quality of their franchises i would gladly buy them till the end of times

I do want a new 2D mario platform for the 3DS (remember people, we don't have a 2D portable mario for this device yet, Mario 3D land is a different gameplay) but I want something different, I am tired of the "New Super Mario" brand. We had a "New" game on DS, Wii and probably Wiiu (New Super Mario Mii).

I want a different style... but you know how it works with mario. Everyone will complain but everyone will play.

I will play it and probably enjoy it just like I did with New Super Mario Bros Wii.

Well, Final fantasy gets a "Free pass" because everything from the characters to the gameplay is brand new with each iteration.

But that's also why I don't mind Mario games. Mario Galaxy, Sunshine, Mario 64, were all very fresh experiences. Mario will never get old to me as long as he keeps going into new, territory and exploring new ideas. In fact, that's what I love about Mario.

you are comparing Mario to FF?! lol! Anyways, Mario games rule. They have been good since the 2600 days. You can play the original Mario Bros. in Mario 3 on the NES, but the 2600 version was so dope and ahead of its time.

Right, milking the name =/= milking the game.

It's not like COD where you have one concept released annually, Mario games have a lot of variety to them, from classic 2D side scrolling to fully 3D platformers, to light RPGs, racing, and party titles. If the games are great, there is nothing wrong with what Nintendo is doing. However, I can understand people not standing Mario and wanting Nintendo to make some new character/setting. While Nintendo may stick to Mario, there are lots of Nintendo exclusives that offer something other than Mario, especially on the DS.

It doesnt look any different from every 2d mario since super mario. This doesnt look any different from New super mario bros on the DS. Who cares as long as all of his various games are good and independent gameplay experiences from the main line franchise?
While it is slightly (OK, to me really annoying here lately) bothersome to see Mario all over the place, Mario kart, tennis and Paper are different enough to be awesome and worthwhile, regardless of Mario's involvement.
The real issue is the constant main Mario games. At least it may be once the Wiiu one is confirmed...(which would make 3 in under a year... ^_^;)

Yeah big surprise this coming from Chris *rolls eyes*. Unfortunately not everyone shares this sentiment. But if you say anything about it you will just get mobbed and attacked by a million Nintendo Knights. I am a genuine Nintendo fan from when they weren't afraid to make new characters and games and its safe to say that Mario is an empty shell of his former self right next to Sonic the Hedgehog. I know the Nintendo defense squad will jump to say no but games like Super Mario Wii are some of the worst Mario games I have EVER played. It is over milked no matter how many sales figures you wave in my face.

What gets me about another mario is that Animal crossing, Luigis mansion and Paper mario (also, Fire Emblem for the west)were all announced well before NSMB2 and some before Tennis Open, and we still know nothing about when they are coming.

I do believe that Mario retains its "freshness" and appeal for a long time. If the series is handled correctly, it could stay fresh and fun forever.

I never get sick of them. I just picked up Mario baseball for gamecube. What a great game. They may have Mario in them all but there always packed with surprises and new features.

Its all supply and demand, its not like there is a yearly or bi-yearly Mario game.

Its all relative really, is there a God Of War or Ratchet And Clank overkill? I just think its all in the eye of the beholder.

For some people maybe a franchise got old a while ago, while there are many new fans to these games with each iteration.

People sometimes think the number of gamer's doesn't grow, which is ridiculous.

I do wonder if this 3ds game and the very similar one Nintendo announced for WiiU will be overkill, but the other titles don't seem like too much; they're totally different genres and gameplay. I'll skip Mario Party and Kart, but the other ones seem fun. And the "new" titles at fairly different from the 3d iterations (such as Galaxy...). Adding to that the fact that Nintendo plans to have these games around for years... You don't have to play them all at once, because you can take a break from Mario for a few years and still be able to pick up these games when you decide to come back. Super Mario 3d Land will still be selling tons of units in 3-5 years, even if no direct sequels come along. So I think it's more of a long game they're playing: get the games out early, once every generation, and then let them sell...

Yes, while all of these games should exhist on the 3DS they need to be spread out better. It feels like Nintendo keeps rushing out Mario games and they're going to run out of Mario franchises to put on the 3DS. They've got a 3D game, a kart game, a 2D game, a tennis game, and the classics on VC. What else are they going to add? They should have been smarter about it and mixed in other franchises like Metroid, Donkey Kong, Brain Age or maybe even new franchises. They're going to have to support the 3DS for probably five to six more years. So why are they putting out all of their Mario games so early in it's life?
