Have you played I Am Alive, Ubisoft’s much-troubled apocalyptic survive-em-up? While it’s a flawed game, certainly, it’s also an extremely important one

Neil writes "October. The busiest time of year for new game releases. And this year is no different with a huge number of titles releasing over the next 30 days or so.
So you can't really blame the team back at Xbox HQ for delivering a bevy of Games With Gold titles that really do fail to enthuse many. In fact, whilst the free Xbox One and Xbox 360 games given away during September were pretty damn decent, October's free titles will quite possibly go down as one of the worst combination of Games With Gold titles this year."
Where are the fanboys previously calling out PS+ as indie+ etc for many months this year, to complain about Octobers GwG indie line-up? Hypocrites.
Well, it's decent offering. But it's just lackluster this month.
I noticed that when Xbox has a major release like Gears of War, MS releases weaker games on Games with Gold to get you to play Gears. While Sony gives you better games to stop people from playing Gears. Both Sony and MS do this.
No but stop complaining about the monthly courtesy games. Complain about the £40 games with microtransactions.
good story but i didnt care for the controls it seemed unrefined
I have to say that I agree with this to a large extent. The 'mid-level' games, and the companies that produce them, are in danger of being squeezed out of existence if the industry continues to develop in the way it has been. This would be quite tragic in my opinion, as I often find these kinds of titles the most interesting of all.
Fortunately, I think we'll start to see more mid-level downloadable titles like I Am Alive in the coming years: offering reasonable production values and content for around a third of the price of a full retail game. Digital distribution is the way to go. Hopefully it'll allow sizable companies to explore fresh ideas without breaking the bank.
this is the console industry. You either go huge or fail. The future seems to be games that most here wouldnt even play, there are so many low cost or free to play games making tons of cash.
It saddens me to know that a game that tries to attempt something remotely new and refreshing will get forgotten while the newest Call of Duty will get rave reviews and glowing praise from critics worldwide.
Yes, I am Alive is a flawed game, yes it's not the most polished title out there, but at LEAST it's trying something new. In an industry that's ditched the search for innovation and originality, something like this should be praised and mechanics and ideas should be used and refined in future games. Just because it's not perfect doesn't mean the idea should be scrapped.
The same thing applies to sequels. I'm sick of the development mentality being to reboot a franchise instead of fixing the flaws of the game before it. Hitman Blood Money had it's flaws, but you dont fix it by making it Splinter Cell Conviction. Devil May Cry 2 was largely considered a mediocre game with a lot of flaws that made it inferior to the original, so what did Capcom do? They came back with what most call the best in the series.
I applaud games like I am Alive and even perhaps Alone in the Dark for trying something new and being bold enough to break the mould. It's just a shame that these games are often unpolished and give the assumption that it's a failed idea.
