I can already see the articles about gamers not being entitled to change the developers ending. Or that ranting will get a game to be changed.

But!!! If you think about! Maybe this is a good thing. Maybe developers will learn that they can send a crappy ending to consumers. Consumers will get angry. Developer will announce a better ending in the coming months. Gamers rejoice and dont trade the game in order to have when the DLC releases. Maybe, EA thought about this but wanted to get paid for the DLC. But $#&/ got hot and they decided to release it for free.

I think you have to buy the game before then and register it to get the content for free since it releases in the summer. Good for me and those that have it, but lol at EA still finding a way to charge for it.

As to thoughts on the announcement itself...well, I'm hopeful. I guess I'll have to wait till summer to see if they actually wrap up the things that were bugging me or if they just draw out the bonkers stuff another ten minutes and leave things where they were to begin with. Personally would have preferred something like what the indoctrination theory folks wanted, but meh, I just want the game to be worth playing through again. At this point its just depressing knowing what all the hard work leads to. A DA:O slideshow would be enough if they did it right.

What the entire fan outcry has been about is that the current ending goes against what Mass Effect has been about. The number one issue is CHOICE. There should have been a number of drastically different endings, not just colour swaps. Your actions throughout the trilogy should have affected the ending in a significant manner.

What we got was a turd sandwich. And now they're just going to put some ketchup on it and call it a day. Gimme a break.

@justpassinggas: I agree with this possibility, but we don't know what the extension actually is yet. It might be a cherry on a turd, or it could be a proper farewell to the series with revelations as to what was going on (Forbes article pointed out they could still go Indoc Theory on this if they wanted its so vague). I just wanted to speak up and recommend patience until we see what it is. A retcon was never in the cards, but explanation and a look at what comes after or why things were happening could have a huge impact. Also, most choices were reflected in cutscenes throughout the game, not gameplay. A modified, cutscene heavy ending could show all those consequences we wanted. Sadly, we won't know till summer.

What about the fact that there is no choices in the ending? all three choices lead to the exact same ending (with a different explosion colour).... Bioware said before the game was released that the ending would not be consisted of an "A B C choice" and that it would take all the games of the trilogy into account... That is all a lie!

I know, and people need to appreciate this, because any "new gamers" from this gen wouldn't have gotten this luxury. When PS2 and Xbox were around there was none of this DLC shit and what not. Yeah Halo had map packs and stuff but it wasn't like it is today.

The whole DLC and Patch thing is a catch 22 on one hand it sucks cause we feel like we're getting cheated, but on the other things like this are possible.

Fans need to commend Bioware for this cause there are few if any companies that would give a sh@# about what the fans say and leave things as is.

I do not know if they will still be able to make this dlc or cutscene that will please all. Hopefully it is an involving cutscene and not just a clarity cutscene that has no choice, time will tell and fanboys will be angry no matter what. This will set the precedent for people to complain about any ending or any movie and have it redone so now I want to see Raimi fix Spiderman 3, want to see Xmen 3 fixed, 24 seasons 6-8 need to be redone and Bioshock 1's ending needs to be redone. I agree that the ending of anything that someone creates is up to them to decided how it ends. Even if Shepard had some cake and blew a whistle that what they would've gotten cause the writers chose to do it.

This is really all they could do. Obviously Casey Hudson and Mac Walters believe the pile of crap they created is masterful art, and it's their right to be so delusional. It would take way too much work to fix all the problems with the ending. An epilogue to fill in their plotholes might be enough to at least satisfy a lot of angry and disappointed fans.

In all honesty it shouldn't matter what the fans think, its what the creators make.

We all have our opinions on everything in life be it movies, games, what were going to do with our day, etc.. That doesn't change the fact that whoever writes,draws,creates something ultimately have the power to see it end as they see fit.

Bioware is doing something extremely rare, and as much as it might kick them in the ass, don't expect other studios to follow suit. This is so rare that a developer actually listens to their fans and tries to make it up to them in some way.

I actually agree.. I don't think foreign sites should be submitted (or even allowed) on N4G. Even if they are translated by Google or your browser, the sites are usually slow, and the translation is difficult to understand. This is exactly why people should think before they type. If you reread what I said, I referenced indoctrination. I didn't say I had a right for the ending to change. I was, and kind of still am hoping for indoctrination theory to be correct. Speaking of rights and "entitlement" yes, I have no right to have the ending changed. They can shit all over the masterful writing of the first game, and throw themes foreshadowed right out the window. Heck, they can even bring on a new character at the end of the game that makes no sense whatsoever. They however have to prove that my money is worth spending on their future titles. It's not our right to change the ending. It is our right to voice dissatisfaction with a purchase, refuse future purchases, and disavow our support; its called speaking with your money. We said that's what we'd do if they didn't want to address the ending. They decided it was easier/cheaper to try to please us than to start over with a fresh fanbase.

Why is that bad? Because it messes up their artistic rights? Artists either cater to their client, keep their support and make money, or they stick to their guns, risk dissatisfaction and lose money; that is every artist's choice with every piece. Neither is wrong, but the artist isn't entitled to anything either. Bioware had the right to make the ending as it was, consumers had the right to protest it and withdraw support, and now Bioware has the right to ignore them or appease them in the interest of future products.

@pekolie: they don't say. It's vague enough they could do anything (including a cutscene ending showing the indoctrination theory playing out), but my thoery is that they'll show cutscnes/sideshows of the various races and characters their future based on your past actions. The current ending will stay, but they'll try to paint a less apocalyptic future than the cliffhanger currently implies.

All this extended cut is doing is to "clarify" and add "closure" to the ending. They've not changed it, therefore they haven't really listened.

They must have looked at the forums and the internet as a whole, saw that people didn't like it and probably thought "oh, they must need an extra cutscene or two just to explain a couple of things". Judging by the Extended Cut's description, it appears that they didn't read our specific issues at all.

I doubt this cut will make things much better. Colour me majorly dissapointed, again. However, we shall see what the few added cutscenes will do. Atleast the DLC is free.

I just came on here to laugh at all the conspiracy theorists out there who when this was first announced claimed "IT WAS ALL PLANNED FROM THE BEGINNING, ea and bioware planned to have a "sucky" ending (btw a story is completely subjective as in one person might hate it and another like it) and they plan on everyone reacting badly enough so they could release ending dlc to charge for. Well... damn. That's pretty much the best way I could see this working out now, short of building a time machine and fixing the ending before it shipped. I didn't want them to change what happened, just give better closure and cover up some plot holes, and that seems like what they're doing.

I still believe that they cut the ending short due to deadline restraints or something like that. If you watch it carefully it seems more like its edited to be something of an ending when there are many unexplained elements that all fit with things floating around the net.

To me the fact that the rest of the game was so incredibly well done, and closure on so many, if not all, other stories, mean that the ending was supposed to be something similar. I just don't see any other reason...well just one...

They pulled a molyneux and just couldn't fulfill the promises they made to fans over the years so went the minimalist and generic route, ignoring completely every single choice you made over 3 games and presenting some ridiculous and halfassed lore that made zero sense in a game universe that was meticulously crafted.

It is sad that a developer cannot end the game the way they wanted to end it... but then again I haven't played this yet, so what do I know right?

However, what I am saying is that I hope whining doesn't cause a developer to not make the game they want to make. After all, part of the joy of making games is to express themselves.

Will developers now think they need to appease "fans" of games? And will this "appeasement" sentiment in the back of their minds have a negative impact on development and creative direction?

This sets a dangerous precedent in today's age of whiny adolescents.

They are not changing the ending. They are simply providing information so people dont have to guess or debate on what actually happened.

In my opinion, they balanced their right to create with the fans right to knowledge excellently.

This is the perfect way to handle the issue.

On one hand, they WONT change the ending, which is the right thing to do. It doesn't matter if we think the ending was a let down (which I personally do, felt like a fizzle not a bang) they have the right to make what they see fit (as we have the right to assess it as consumers). They are mainting the right to create.

On the other hand, they are helping the KEY issue - clarification. We will learn more about what happened and it should make more sense. And it is free.

Hard to think how this could be in any way bad.

I feel Bioware made the right call and this was the best solution for all sides

well i would react in the same way i have acted now, which is insulted at how easily bioware has gotten with lying to their fans. I mean, they did said numerous times that this was the end of shepards story, and that they wouldnt have to worry about how ME3 ending would affect a future release.

So if thats the case, i would just add it to the list of lies bioware said before the release of ME3

well not really hit their wallets because for someone to complain about the ending, it generally means they already bought the game. Mostly i think they realized they screwed their fans and now they are trying to do something about it, though im not sure this is the right path

well i wont lie and say im not dissapointed... in a way im happy they are doing SOMETHING about the ending, but i doubt this is the way to go... but i wont pass judgement until i actually see it.

The thing is, if this is just going to be cutscenes about what happened to the characters (which most magically teleported to the normandy...) then it just sucks, 1st because it should have been in the game from the start, 2nd because it still doesnt correct whats wrong.

I guess thats kinda my problem, there are so many wrong things in the ending, that its hard to imagine any explanation besides the indoctrination theory to actually fix them, otherwise i fear we are just going to get more cutscenes trying to make some sense out of something that just DOESNT MAKE SENSE.

I would actually respect bioware more if they had the guts to admit its bad, kinda like the director of Deus Ex HR admited they screwed up with the boss battles, it takes real integrity to admit when you are wrong..

But anyway, like i said, i will wait until its out to pass a final judgement, but based on what they have said it will be, im not holding my breath

please do enlighten us with your knowledge since you seem to understand all the nonsense, you probably wont even read everything below, seeing how big it is, but maybe you could share some of your knowledge and answer a couple of this questions with hard facts

-why does the alliance soldier says no one made it to the beam when they could have clearly seen you and anderson made it?
-Why does anderson show up 1st to the control panel when he entered after shepard and there is only 1 way to the panel?
-why does everyone die from harbinger's blast, shepards armor practically incinerated, and yet Anderson who is wearing a shirt survived with a bruise in his face???
-why would the reapers even have the beam set to take people right next to the panel?
-why would harbinger leave after he knocks out everyone? its pretty clear that beam has to be protected...
-why is the illusive man capable of controlling anderson and shepard? his research was to control indoctrinated people...
-why is shepard bleeding from the exact spot where he shot anderson?
-why is hacket calling out to shepard after the crucible doesnt work? to the alliance everyone was dead after the blast from harbinger...
-why if the citadel is a part of the catalyst they needed sovereign to stay behind?? certainly the catalyst could watch over the civilizations and activate the relay...
-why does shepard take for a fact what the catalyst says when you know (if played properly) that it is possible to have peace between organics and synthetics (geth and EDI)
-why is the control option(Illusive Man) the paragon option and Destroy (Anderson) the renegade choice?
-Arrival DLC showed us that the destruction of a Mass Relay causes an explosion equivalent of a supernova, which destroy everything in the system...so basically in every ending we are killing almost every civilazation in existence..
-if we asume this was a magical new type of destroying the relays, it still means we are leaving everyone stranded where they were(including that big ass army you brought) and they will all starve to death.
-HOW THE HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO BELIEVE SHEPARD SURVIVES IN THE BEST ENDING, WHEN HE GOES THROUGH THIS: 1.Tubes blow up in his face. 2.CITADEL blows up in his face. 3.He is in space with no armor and no oxygen. 4.He goes through earths atmosphere and crashes in at thousands of km per hour. AND IM SUPPOSED TO BELIEVE HE WOULD BE ALIVE AMONG RUBBLE???
-WHY IS THE NORMANDY RUNNING AWAY IN A RELAY???
-why is the normany affected by the blast when nothing else is affected??
-WHY IS MY CREW(supposedly blown up in London by harbinger) SHOWN ON THE NORMANDY?? did they magically teleported??
-if the normandy managed to get away in time from the explosion(that shouldnt have affect it), it means they are showing up next to a relay...you know, those that are blowing up and obliterating everything in that system...kinda hard for them to show up on a planet after that.

Because it was a dream? Or indoctrination, as some guys think? Because the writers' intention was to raise questions in your mind, not to show everything explicitly. They made a mistake because they targeted mainstream audience with too much allegory and symbolism. It should go as your Western crappy TV full of reality shows and similar crap, showing "da truth".

I assume you've never read a good novel in your life. SF novels are full of such plots, I could name at least five which end similarly. But this is for people who read more than forum posts. This is for people who have life outside of Internet and games. Even so, I also assume you've never played a good Japanese game with complicated story, twists, dreams, retrospections, vague imagery and so on. You demand everything explicitly shown in front of your eyes. Your imagination doesn't exist. You accept ancient flying machines which span kilometers and come to destroy the galaxy but you can't accept everything could be a dream or virtual simulation. They even give you a clue of that with Legion's mission in geth servers. They give you clues with Shepard's dreams. But you approach it all with your cold logic and it makes no sense. Of course it doesn't and it won't. Well, at least until Bioware spoil this ending with some crappy explanations.

I don't expect you to understand me. It's like explaining colours to a blind person. Now you can click disagree, take bubbles or whatever. I will pity you anyway.

Free DLC I'll take it. on my 2nd run through going for 100% this time..(dunno if this is a game spoiler but is the trophy twords bring all the assests to the final conflict, does telling Ashley to stay behinde go twords it?)
