EAD: Super Mario 3D Land Meant To Be An Entry Point For Mario Newcomers

Nintendo Enthusiast:

Koichi Hayashida, said during GDC:

“We thought of setting the difficulty level about as low as we could go realistically for this game because we saw this as an entry point to the Mario games for a lot of people. So the way we see it is someone would pick up Super Mario 3D Land and play that, and then maybe they would move onto Super Mario Galaxy or Super Mario Sunshine or Super Mario 64 after that.”

That would certainly explain the ease of play. Not that it wasn't fun of course. Easy or not, I love this game. Hope the newcomers do as well.

and let me guess, you used the tanooki tail to pass alot of stages.....

players that complain the game is too easy should stop using the items that are there to make the game easy for people that CANT play the gane well.

try passing the last stage (the one that unlocks after getting all gold with luigi and mario) using no power up, see how you do.

better yet, try passing stages as mini mario only, trust me its fun and challenging :)

Nah man, I just played each stage as best as I could. I also chose not to resort to the "tons o' lives" trick.

I loved 3D Land despite its easiness and I'm hoping for a sequel.

I'm not trolling. 3D land isn't a bad game. I actually played for almost an hour after I made that post to give it another chance. Don't just assume EVERYONE is trolling, even though many people are.

It's true that the first 8 worlds have been easy, especially with the power ups, but hopefully I will have time to check out the 8 unlockable worlds as well.

If i didn't need money for other things, I would probably keep the game. Unlike New SMB for DS, which I wasn't fond of.

I would give New SMB an 8 so far and I'm hoping the final 8 worlds are very challenging which would make the score so much higher for me.

Don't be so defensive. There will always be hater and trolls on n4g. I just get a little edgy when I hear devs talking about making games easier.

.... and IMO I would rather not have that OPTION.

This game made me trade my entire system in, complete with ambassador games, for a psvita. Idk what went wrong, but the game felt small, boring, and totally un-mario. Felt like I could play it on an iphone, which means it is too simple to be a real game. (1 step away from a point and click adventure.)

clrlite4414d ago

Funny coincidence, I just put this game on ebay an hour or so before this article popped up.

I think I stopped playing around the same time that I learned you could earn invincibility if you die a couple times.

I will probably play the game a bit more before I ship it to the ebay buyer.

It's definitely better than New SMB (IMO) which was also ridiculously easy.

live2play4414d ago

stopped playing after u got invisibility power up?
u have to die several times to get that
and you said the game was easy? if its easy why did u even get to that point?
and after u beat the game you unlock 8 NEW WORLDS not just a few levels. and THEY ARE WAY HARDER

and i bet you use the tanooki tail alot, that is a crutch for people that find it hard to play. DO NOT USE THE TANOOKI TAIL to make the game easier.

u make no sense, i smell a troll

live2play4414d ago

and another thing

YOU DONT BECOME INVINCIBLE AUTOMATICALLY!

you actually have to CHOOSE to become that. if you DONT want invincibility then DONT CHOOSE that OPTION

live2play4414d ago

try playing as mini mario and dont use chackpoints. its fun and challenging

TheFirstClassic4414d ago

I played super mario 64 when I was five, and I didn't have any problem with the difficulty then. Doesn't beating the game unlock a harder mode, or did I just make that up?

Nerdmaster4414d ago

Yeah, after you beat the first 8 worlds, you unlock the special worlds. They are more difficult and they can prove to be quite a challenge.

TheFirstClassic4414d ago

Well that's good to hear, I'm a little less worried about the difficulty now.

wingman32x4413d ago

3D land was pretty easy, but you can make it challenging.

Try clearing stage S7-4, collecting all of the star coins, and gold flagging it in one run with no powerups. Took me a long time to do that.

My top 3 are Mario 3, Mario World and Mario 64. Mario Odyssey is also excellent, and I enjoyed Sunshine but didn't care for the Galaxy series.
