It doesn't look like Pixar's CGI but it looks phenomenal all the same. I really liked heavy rain and I hope this will blow it out of the water in graphics!

No it doesn't, but the facial work looks believable, which is what is clearly important. My heart was pumping and heavy right until the end. What a fascinating concept, my imagination is already thinking of "what ifs" and "whys" and "how" questions and I'm filling those answers with all kinds of possibilities. That's the mark of a really good presentation.

Hope they do something with exactly this since they make it clear it's just a concept, but a game like this would be pretty interesting

Anyway, it's an amazing demo visually and story telling. When you get emotionally attached to a character in a few minutes, they're doing something right.

Loved Quantic since Indigo Prophecy and it sounds like they are really excited about the progress they have made since Heavy Rain.

Pretty sure this is a tech demo disguised as a short film. Now, that isn't to say they couldn't use this material in some larger game production, but...

It honestly works best on its own. It's a very strong, emotional short film. It doesn't need a plot of someone buying her followed by hijinks.

Very Asimovian though. Not something that's often seen these days.

Really though, were they to make this into some sort of game that would be great. A robot designed only to serve and please humans on the run from her creators and possibly the authorities as a rogue AI, escaping her enemies while carefully choosing those who she can trust. A little too spectacular, I know, but I think that would be awesome.

But after watching the video, I think they can pull it off. Wonder why the twilight movies have such awful acting.

Anyways... I have a feeling that this conversation or idea will come up as people will try and relate this to I Robot, the same way people tried to relate I am Legend with The Last of Us

as for the video...it's a video. i don't see why sony fans always get so excited about CGI. I learned my lesson before ps3 even launched with the KZ2 trailer, and so should all of you.

the terms "in-engine" and "real-time" don't have the weight they had a generation ago. you can take just about any current gen engine and accomplish something that looks way WAY better than you get in actual gameplay.

sure this game MIGHT look great, and the concept MIGHT evolve into something less been-there-done-that than 'robot gains consciousness.' we'll just have to wait n see.

The acting sucks because the script is garbage. I mean, yeah, they can try their best to make teen girl boyfriend/stalker angst interesting, but the best chef in the world can't make a good souffle out of bird shit.

Good example: Liam Neeson, Ewan McGreggor, Samuel L. Jackson, Natalie Portman, and so on were all featured at various points in a huge budget trilogy. They all appeared to be horrid, talentless shmucks, when everyone knows that they can be quite good.

If it wasn't completely obvious enough that this tech demo is what will come to form the basis of an exclusive PS3 game, this demo is already a year old so a new game is most likely coming very soon to PS3, within the next 12-18 months.

QD are contracted for 2 more PS3 exclusives: this... and one additional game, so yeah - tech demos --> exclusives.

what the heck, it seems like a irobot /heavy rain game. Graphically and the character look pretty much same as heavy rain too. Heavy rain was a great title for story and narrative and this just should it potential will do thr same. However what heavy rain lacked is replay value and gameplay elements. It was a game best for rental. As this game seems like it, although gameplay videos have to be shown to decide that if it is a heavy rain type of game with glorified qte throughout the game.

But wonderful video cant wait to see full game in action and add to my rental list. Hopefully quantic dream will make a better game this time and people actual cared about it. Heavy rain was not a game for everyone it as you dont play much of it but i enjoyed this change but again no way i advise anyone to pay full price for it. Once your done your done no replay value, i played twice got platinum but second playthrough was mind numblingly boring.

The mannequin graphics seem to have returned the character looked like madison paige abit. Is this the game or just a tech demo? As a sci fi heavy rain kinda game will be cool.

But QD hope you innovate and not fill the game with QTE inbetween narrative.

Heavy rain did decent with 87%% metacritic though.

Yep, I mean it really goes to show how little you know about Heavy Rain dude. Most of the game is fully interactive. Keep pretending that all you do is press QTE, when it's the same format and style as in Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy, which was on the Xbox, and it was praised. You get the same level of interaction and story from point and click adventure games on PC, which no one (unless people like you do) complains about. It's you Xbox console kiddies that only picked up a game pad this gen that can't deal with mature experiences like Heavy Rain and the fact that it's not meant to be like other games. It's not this developers fault that you prefer shallower experiences.

I see on the other articles regarding Halo 4, you seem to go nuts about how "PS3 can't compete"? Why not? Because of no multi-player? It's boohoo I guess.

This tech demo was about two things in regards to the technology and "PS3 power" side of things:

Advancements in Animation and how that is affected by Emotion.

If game characters can "think" for themselves without OUR input, that would be a MASSIVE leap forward.

i.e. it's not all about processing power/graphics (: (think about it and relate it to games such as GTA and inFamous, where decisions influence the gameplay)

This is what Heavy Rain was about too.

Heavy Rain's faces, while good, had a sort of stiffness not present here. No, this isn't L.A. NOIRE smooth (although, that had body limitations that don't plague Kara), but this is Heavy Rain's engine with improvements. They are clearly apparent.

Agreed. As long as they stick to the same scenario, I believe that I would be fine with it. From what I remember, the original tech demo from Heavy Rain didn't have a lot of content hints. It was more of the facial expressions. However, once the game was coming close, we got that level with the taxidermist serial killer...which hinted more toward the game. At any rate, this tech demo was impressive as a piece of tech and also as (hopefully) a hint toward what could be a great premise for a game.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a gamer first.

Microsoft or any other company could buy them and make them a first party for all I care, I just want them to be praised for the great games they were able to produce, namely, Fahrenheit 451 (which was released on PC as well) and Heavy Rain. It's just they seem to be making it an occupational strategy to focus on a single hardware to get the best performance/visuals out of it. Maybe they think that by doing so, it becomes easier for them to tweak their games. If that's the way they want to work, I'll just respect that.

Being a first party studio could assure the continuity of their work and actually provide them more resources to work with. Unfortunately they choose to develop for PS3 only for the moment, which may change in the future, and for now, their becoming a first party studio seems to be possible only if Sony buys them. I just think that they deserve to be a first party studio and they already proved that with the great games they released. What better time than now? They're great at what they do.

As a 15 year old back in 2006 the original Heavy Rain casting demo didn't impress me at all due to rubbish animations and the fact that it had a PS2ish vibe to it with unbearable lip-sync animations and uncanny behavior.

Then the actual game comes out and I couldn't help but notice the crappy PS2ish textures on literally every surface in the game, including pale faced character models that looked lifeless and the skin textures looked kind of blurry.

Now QD shows off their "new" technology and what do we see? something that looks exactly like HR. I've come to the conclusion that QD are rubbish devs.

I didn't really like UC3 but I have to say that ND's character models look and act more realistic than anything QD has achieved and the funny thing is that QD's primary focus is Character realism in terms of emotions, behavior and looks.

I will definitely avoid their games for the remainder of this gen and the next. They have absolutely no potential imo.

AC3 is my idea of mature. Having a game with a good story that requires the player to have a deeper understanding is a mature game.

judging from the Heavy Rain tech demo (back in 2006)the main character from the tech demo wasn't an important character in the final game, rather she was just a side character but the worlds seemed similar in tone and setting. We can definitely be sure to expect the final title to this to be Kara and this person/android will most definitely be a playable character. This kind of ruins the whole "next game will take place during a war" rumor that David Cage was going to base the game on but that may still ring true...futuristic era, war torn society, androids...count me in!

While the character is still far from being indistinguishable from a real human being, I believe the strong point I got from this video were her facial expressions. The emotion from her facial expressions show that we are much more further along when it comes to conveying convincing facial emotions than I was aware of. For those 7 minutes are so I was, for a time, invested in her desire to exist even if it were small and brief.

If this is how I feel with even a proof of concept video in real time on PS3, then I look forward to what a finished product would look like in similar fashion.

Its certainly came a long way from Heavy Rain's ambitious venture. A long way indeed.

That was really refreshing to see. In a gen dominated by shooters it is devs like Quantic Dream that i really admire for doing something extremely different.

If David Cage & comp. do a game similar to this tech demo that will be something i wanna play. We get so few games that tug at you emotionally & make you really think. Games like Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Flower, Journey, Heavy Rain & others like it do not come around that often. When they do they should be cherished for what they try to convey.

A lot of credit go to Sony for giving devs like Quantic Dream the 'go ahead' to do games like these. They are not afraid to take chances knowing themselves it is a risk & maybe not financially a benefit for them.
