Do we really need yet another Mario?

Roger Sandbakk: I know this sounds weird, but do we really need yet another Mario? Do we really need another 'Legend Of Link But It Sells More If We Have A Woman In The Title So Let's Name It After Zelda' game? Don't get me wrong, I do love Mario and Zelda - the problem is I had a lot of fun with them years ago, so how come we keep getting the same games over and over?

Mario will always be here to save the industry and push the industry in the right direction.

Mario is responsible for many innovations used in gaming today. Innovations that now span all consoles and genres. May it be 2D 3D or 120 frames per second in 4D. Mario will always be around to show developers how to do things the proper way.

Mario 64 alone is one of the, if not the most influential gaming Nintendo exclusive experiences of our time.

As long as they innovate like they did with the Galaxy games then yes.

People can say Mario is over-played all they want, but the reality is that since Mario 64, the games have always been so different compared to the previous game. Sunshine was different than Mario 64, and Galaxy was a lot different than Sunshine.

(Yes, SMG2 was essentially the same thing.......because it was a direct sequel lol)

And even Mario 3D Land was something we haven't seen before from a Mario game.

I can't imagine what a Mario game on the Wii U will be like.

I think you're right on the money with each 3D Mario experience being new and unique (save for the one direct sequel they did for Galaxy). It's like saying that the early 2D Mario games are exactly alike despite only sharing some basic game functionality and aesthetic design.

Until the day a Mario game DOESNT sell, it will always have another game in the series. Nintendo will never stop milking it. As long as they are decent, and make the mario fans happy, who is to complain?

Nintendo will still release another hundred Mario games for the Wii U regardless if whether we need another one or not.

"Need" might be a strong word, but "want" is certainly applicable. I keep having loads of fun with each new installment, so what's the problem? And they do change, but you can only take a game so far away from its roots before it might as well be a different game entirely. Would a modern day Zelda be cool? Sure, but does it need to be Zelda, then? And wouldn't that just be a graphical paint job, anyway? And would Hyrule Online be interesting? Probably, but what makes it a Zelda game? We can see the failings of Sonic and Crash Bandicoot as they strived to be all-new and different with later iterations, and those titles were met with disinterest or dislike. Perhaps they would have been better served with a new mascot, or perhaps they just sucked, but if you're going to make a Mario game, it had better have jumping and mushrooms!

Except for Half Life 3, do we really NEED any game at all? No, but as long as the demand for Mario is high, the powers that be will keep giving the people what they WANT.

Seriously..... I will by galaxy 3 on the Wii U. Could you even imagine how big they could make the plnets with that 25 gb game disc. Man that could easily be game of the year like previous galaxy game.

I doubt there will be a Galaxy 3, especially on Wii U. Every 3D Mario is always a unique experience. 64 was different from Sunshine and Sunshine was different from Galaxy. Personally I want Nintendo to branch out and do new things with Mario as they've been doing.

Nope, maybe "we" dont need another Mario game. As "we" I'm refering those who has "grown up in tastes" or as they call themselves "mature" and has played all Mario games since 1986. And by those, I'm refering to the "hardcore" gamer of N4G, and gamer journalist who are actually in the 25-30 years.

You know, those guys who think that all gamers have their same age, and dont believe they're younger gamers who doesnt even know about SM64. Now, new gens of gamers will need another Mario game, and will enjoy it like we enjoyed SMB 1, 3 and World. (no, I didn't like SMB2 that much)

Yes please, the last few have been great and pretty much untouchable in terms of both 2D and 3D platforming.

Does any Nintendo system need Mario........????? Well, look at how rough the 3DS started out, and then all of a sudden, 2 Mario games drop and the sales haven't stopped yet. Many may feel Mario is old and dated and Nintendo needs to put Mario on pause or retire him, but realistcally Mario is the face of gaming. It doesn't matter which systems you own or if you are a MS or Sony fan. Mario sets the template for every new generation. Without Mario there is no evolution in gaming period. The game industry as a whole waits to see a new Mario, to see what new innovations Nintendo has come up with in regards to gaming. Plus many new young gamers first gaming experiences are with Mario. I am sorry, but a good parent would start their kids with a Mario not a Call of Duty or GTA. He's the most recognized mascot in the world, how could we not need him?

I say yes. We need a mario Sabdbox game that spans all of his games.Something where he can hop on a Mach Bike and drive to the mushroom kingdom mario kart syle, getoff the bike and do some classic platformer, and have epic RPG esque battles with a fairly decent story and voice work.
