i think there are a few problems with this, namely that emulation is tasking. they would need to test each game out and fix them individually, which will end up taking a lot of time to do. it'll most likely be a quick fix for each, but QA will need to be done, which is why i believe they opted for a pay model so individual developers can go through and perform the necessary emulation fixes

No, the PS3 can't emulate them "just fine" because the newer systems don't even have the GS and EE chips on the motherboards anymore, so it's 100% software emu. My other PS3 -- before it died -- was a 2nd gen PS3 with software BC, meaning that they kept the Graphics Synthesizer chip on the PS3 MOBO and opted to emulate the PS2's CPU (EE = Emotion Engine = PS2 CPU) with the Cell.

Even with that, some games ran fine and others didn't. I tested tons of my PS2 games, most RAN, but a lot of them had graphical problems and technical issues. SSX3 would run fine, but would crash at completely random times very often, making it unplayable. Tekken Tag Tournament ran at fullspeed in the menus, but slowed down to 2 fps during gameplay. Some of the Ratchet games I played had lots of framerate drops and graphical issues. The DDR games would also crash frequently.

When they did the PS3's with the partially software-based emu, the emulation percentage dropped from ~98% down to around 69% or so. So when they took out the GS chip finally, emulation was mainly a pipedream.

The reason there's barely over a dozen "PS2 Classics" right now is because those games have been tested and can just barely work at fullspeed with minimal problems. Otherwise there would be a new batch of games every week.

Don't understand why coryok got so many disagrees when he's right. PS2 emulation is really difficult because in order to emulate it, a typical processor has to emulate multiple components of the PS2 one after the other, as opposed to the PS2 itself which - due to it's crazy architecture - could run them in unison with little effort. That's why even on modern day PC's, you need a beastly CPU clocked at 3.4+ Ghz to get fullspeed on most games, even with speedhacks. Don't even count on PS2 emu to hit the Vita anytime soon either for those very reasons.

My PS2 is old and I have a lot of trouble with it, so the PS2 games I have are (almost) useless.

Also my launch PS3 bricked on me a couple years after release and was replaced with a non-BC model. So it wouldn't be pointless for people in the same shoes as me.

Granted I don't have many PS2 games left in my collection, but it would be nice to at least have the opportunity to play them without the hassle of a dodgy PS2, plus having one system set up makes things look a lot neater (my PS3 is tucked nicely under the TV, and then the PS2 is on the floor with wires trailing everywhere!)

The thing is that in 3rd world countries current gen consoles cost a LOT of money, I'm from Brazil, but came to USA in 2000, and when I go back home on vacation I still see consoles like supernes, negadrive been sold! Well Sony is a global company. They likely shifted a few plants over from PS2 to PS4 production for 2013 or are planning to do so or build new ones soon.

PS2 is still the new console in parts of the world. PS3 has yet to even surface in those regions. Still though many still make minimum wage and have yet to enjoy gaming. So PS2 is an easy quick option to jump into and its not a bad system.

I wonder if the PS3 was backwards compatible, if it would have sold a lot more than it did. It didnt sell bad by any means (slightly outsold the xbox year to year, still behind wii) but it went from powerhouse to competetitor in a generation

Sony didn't miss an opportunity at all, actually. When the PS3 launched, it had backwards compatibility for PS2 and PS1 games, and it didn't sell high numbers. Sony removed the PS2 compatibility hardware from the PS3 to cut manufacturing costs and give them room to drop the price to try and spark more interest in the console. It worked.

Consumers proved that backwards compatibility was not a required feature for PS3, since the backwards-compatible models did not sell as well as the newer models.

That said, I have a launch model PS3, and I don't use the PS2 backwards compatibility. I have a launch model PS2 for my PS2 gaming needs.

It was a lack of titles and the insane price that cooled sales for a few years until the signifigant price cuts took effect and the better titles started hitting shelves.

The backwards compatibility had nothing to do with the ps3 resurgence. And the backwards compatible ps3 was/is a highly sought after item.

I have a launch PS3 as well, which plays PS2 games and up-converts them to HD, so it's curious you say you prefer to use your PS2 to play PS2 games, especially since the PS3 fits them to widescreen and puts them is HD.

Anyway, imagine if you could get a PS3 slim that had BC for $249? I think those would sell like hotcakes. I still play PS2 titles from time to time and it's nice to have the option at least, less clutter then keeping 10 consoles out at a time as well.

I've always kind of figured this would happen to PS3 when new consoles come out.

Think about it. New hardware is always sexy, but it will be expensive and not have many games.

PS3 by comparison will be dirt cheap, have a huge library, continued support with devs getting more and more out of the hardware, and its reliable. After going through 4 XB360's, the first one being broken on launch night, there's no way I'm getting an XB3 in the first year this time.

I also think just having stronger hardware around and devs developing new techniques will actually trickle down to PS3 and improve its games. Every consoles games look better in their latter years.

Just ordered Digital Devil Saga II for PS2. I play PS2 games because the RPGs are infinitely better than most of the ones for the current gen systems. If you aren't a fan of FPS, especially online, the games for PS2 are the way to go.

I'm not really surprised, the PS2 was epic and is an example on how to do a console right. I happen to have a backwards compatible launch PS3, so I sold my PS2 a long time ago, still play some of the old PS2 library from time to time in upconverted HD on the PS3 though.

I don't think Sony will continue to make first party games for the PSP, how could they? They need to focus all efforts from their studios on the Vita, so that it can be a success. That doesn't mean third party games cant still release on the PSP though.

Sort of how Nintendo has stopped first party support on the Wii, but third parties will continue support.

The Sega Genesis had tons of third party releases all the way up till the late 1990's, like Vectorman, which was one of the better Genesis titles ever.

Nostalgia is always big with video games and lots of parents see the cheaper PS2 and PSP as the way to go for their kids and things like that.

My Dad and I work at the same place (Giant grocery store) and one day while gathering up the trash out of the trash cans from the parking lot he discovered a fat PS2! Surprisingly enough my Dad actually knew what it was and brought it home for me.

Its not as much people Here buying them to play, its people exporting them to other countries like south America where they mod them to play burned games. When I used to work in GS in Miami, people came in and bought ps2 and xboxs 3-5 at a time, each week.

Well just about every store I go to in my city I can find a PSP sitting on the shelf its just by sheer luck you can even find a PS2 still need to buy one mine just bit the dust. The Vita is the one console people are having trouble finding. I think its time Sony knocked the price of the PSP down a few bucks might generate more sales. Thing is PSP games are getting harder to find I can find the odd decent title but everything else is just crap for the PSP. If the demand is there maybe Sony can chug out a few PS1 consoles. Doubt they will do that in the near future.

And of course the PS2 is going to be popular in Latin America some of the countries are still playing a Master System and a Genesis a PS3 is to expensive down there to own.

I was saying it last year, I'll say it again. Production for PS2/PSP will end this year. And from there, whatever is on the shelves will be it. Sony has the PS3 to finish off with, now PSV, and making PS4. The shift has to happen sometime. It's been a long run though, no doubt.

You can buy PS2s for 20 bucks or less now...USED of course. They were practically giving them away a few months back in a Gamestop sale. Shouldn't be too hard to find one if you are looking.

The controllers and some games cost more than the console now. Just sold my orignal Xbox not too long ago but decided to keep my PS2 for MGS & the Hitman games.

Even though i bought the vita & own a PS3 i still am i proud owner of the original PSP 1000 & fat PS2. These 2 systems especially the PS2 is the pinnacle of gaming, people can argue that fact but for many of us some of the greatest moments in gaming are from the PS2 for me personally anyway.

The PS2 still sells cause countries of lower financial income the PS2 is a great deal & a awesome start into gaming cause of its massive library of games. The systems is still making money for Sony so there is no way they will discontinue the machine anytime soon.

All Playstation consoles have been BC with older ones, True though that PS2 cmpatibility was cut from later ps3 models but Sony were more or less forced to do it, it was the most sensible thing to take away to lower the price and people still moan even though a lot of people demanded a ps3 without ps2 BC. cant please everyone it seems. IMO they should have gotten Launch ps3's if they wanted BC like I did.

But now the VITA is out and it is BC with PSP, and we should be getting PS1 support on it also. Dont know if that is confirmed but it must come. simple software emulation on such a powerful platform as the VITA should be easy peasy.

Im sure Sony will have full BC with the ps4 seeing that using a CELL type CPU makes sense.
And even now, pure software ps2 emulation is possible even with a cheap laptop. so PS1, ps2 emulation is a given

And to me it seems likely despite all recent rumours (!) about SONY and AMD that sony will have "CELL" in the ps4. I think that some sort of POWER 8 based CELL is possible for the PS4, but only time will tell. I cant wait and either way; lack of ps3 BC wont stop me from buying a ps4. Ill still have a ps3. BC would be extremely nice though and Ill hapilly pay a few extra bucks for it.

But if ps4 aint ps3 BC, then I would hope sony will keep the ps3 alive long enough for me to get another one assuming that my current one dies, until PS3 games can be emulated well enough on a mid end pc.. but that looks to be pretty damn far away still.
