CFD!'s Rob Rich takes a look at this odd indie PC title:
"It all started with a sketch on 4chan.
"On January 4, 2007, an anonymous poster uploaded an image by doujin artist RAITA. The illustrator credited it to a non-existent dating sim (a popular genre in Japan) called “Katawa Shoujo” or “Disability Girls.” 4chan being 4chan, people began talking. What if this were a real game? What would it be like? Serious? Light-hearted? Some sort of perverse sexual simulation? It wasn’t long before a number of posters took to the idea and got to work. Now, just about 5 years later, the game has been released and completed.
"The most shocking thing about it? Its actually really, really good."
KeenGamer: "We have the best visual novels to suggest to you, but we do recognize that many gamers don’t consider visual novels as games. Sluggishly leafing through dialogues, from time to time making choices. Additionally, many don’t like the anime style of the genre. Maybe we can change your mind."
Most games today are safe to play with colleagues and family, however, some games still have that “nope, I don’t want my mom to see me playing this”-feel to them. Christian has played most of this genre, and has made a list of his top 10 NSFW games.
“Most of the game is safe to play with family, but you can be unlucky and have your parents walk in on the scene that features dildo’s and the characters’ parents having sex.”
I think you mean kids walking in on dad fapping. Pretty sure the age group of South Park fans makes it the parents playing the game. Maybe I was supposed to quit gaming when I had kids though...
Disabilities aren't common in video games. But when they do appear, their portrayals are more realistic than one would at first believe.
Yes it is really really good. I was shocked as well when I downloaded it on a whim lol.
Been hearing so much about this lately. Guess I'll have to check it out so I'm not out of the loop when it's a cult classic or something.
After completing all the routes and got all the good endings, I must say I was very impressed. The script is very detailed and well written, yet it never tries to drag any scene out for the sake of increasing its word count, so the game comes out at just the perfect length. On top of that, each characters' personality differs greatly from one another, so no two routes feel even remotely the same. Overall, the game is definitely a must-play if you can enjoy a good piece of literature.
The game's good when you take into consideration the way it was conceived but compared to other "real" visual novels Katawa Shoujo is nothing more than a joke. If you really have that much time to waste then play Clannad, now that's a visual novel worth your time.
I love this.
