They are each fantastic in every way. Personally, I like to think of them all as one giant game, one giant story arc, because I don't have a favorite. To me, it is the perfect game (the whole series) and everything about it is amazing. I do however think that the octocamo suit in 4 is one of the most genius ideas I've ever seen in my life. If military ever comes up with something like that...dang.

Personally 4 is my favorite.. Not because of the ps3 or some weird reason like that.. Guns of the patriots had some of the most jaw dropping moments i've ever experienced in a game.. Anyone who has played 4 knows what I'm talking about.. Shadow moses and of course outer haven.. Every single question I ever had about MGS was answered in the span of this game and for that it will hold a special place in my heart... 3 is a very very close second btw ;)

Absolutely. Going back into Shadow Moses was simply humbling. So much nostalgia playing the original game.

I remember when I entered shadow moses in MGS4 and had a flood of some of my fondest gaming memories.. It was a special feeling that not very many games help me achieve.. When the game ended I was sadened and overyjoyed at the same time.. Sadened by the fact that it was over, I didnt want that game to end. But I was happy because my biggest fear involving snake didnt happen... I'm sure you know what I mean, I dont want to spoil it for those who haven't played it...

MGS4 was great, but I think the execution of a lot of ideas could've been better. Like the explanation for Vamp's invincibility, the identity of the Patriots, the whole of Act 3 sucking, etc. The start of Act 5 was amazing, pure classic MGS stealth. Shame it was so brief, though.

My second is peace walker... by far the best PSP game I ever played

Well at my school, Im the only one who says Snake eater is their favourite. Most favour MGS4 or the original MGS...

Snake eater is amoungst their last because they disliked the survival mechanics

I did cry over 4.. Despite how much of a beast big boss is and the ending of 3 was one of the best of all time I will alwasy be a snake fanatic.. Metal gear solid was the first time I ever played a game that left me in awe.. So MGS4 is my pick, heck I'm buying a 1911 operator (they're real) handgun bc of 4 lol...

4 was pure epic, but to me 3 had more of an artistic touch too, and I like that. That one area where you climb that interminable ladder and the theme song starts playing A capella, that really resonated with me. One of the most memorable events in games I've played, for me.

4 for me was probably the best "game", but weakest story in the series, not that it was bad, just the others were better. Even 2, when people think of 2 they think of Raiden, but 2 was very important to the story and was actually a great game with some of the best MGS moments and memorable characters.

But yeah, as groundbreaking and memorable as MGS1 was, MGS3 is still my favorite. Like Blaine said, the ladder climb was amazing, the game had so many great moments, such as the greatest boss battle ever in my opinion, "The End", the ending scene with "The Boss" and "Sorrow's River" among others. Best series ever.

Oh shit, forgot Sorrow's River! MGS3 was actually the first MGS game I played (I got into the series late, finally got around to it when MGS4 was announced, and figured I'd do 3 first since it's a prequel) and I didn't really know you weren't supposed to kill anyone then. Took me over an hour to get across that river... Worst part is, I didn't realize you're supposed to die and use the pill when the gameover screen comes up, so I had to do it twice! (If only I'd known I could just drown myself and skip it...) I learned my lesson; it was fewest-kills playthroughs for me after that. How many games actually turn people into pacifists? MGS3 taught me a life lesson! (And although I'd forgotten about the river, the lesson stuck.)

Part 3 is my favorite as well but I do love all of them. Favorite game series.

I personally favor MGS2 as the best of the series. I know it always gets a bad wrap because Snake wasn't the main character, but it was a revolutionary game. The presentation values and level of detail in the graphics were insurmountable at the time... Excellent voice acting and cinematics, a fantastic musical score, and some of the most dramatic storytelling found not just in a game but any medium for that matter. All this wrapped around deep yet immensly satisfying stealth gameplay that never got old.

I very well have listed the qualities that were found in each of the other metal gear games as well, but for me MGS2 was just groundbreaking at the time for what was possible in a video game, in every regard.

Agreed. I actually thought Raiden was a good main character, I was disappointed when it was him, but he got better. Second to me would be Portable Ops, I liked having to drag people into the truck for recruitment, over the parachuting in PW.

It all started with Metal Gear (for the MSX) which I played when it got ported to the Nintendo Famicom in Japan.

But yes possible Metal Gear Solid was the start of something new with the change from over the top view and the nice use of the soliton radar.

But I still hold the original Metal Gear as one of my favorites as it was one of my early games that I bought with my own money and for my own system.

Totally agree. Snake Eater is by far the best Metal Gear Solid game followed by Peace Walker. MGS1 remains in my heart. The rest are beautiful too! I really can't choose :P

I guess I belong to the small camp of people who like MGS2. I played it so many times. It revolutionized the MGS experience. I still remember playing the demo of MGS2 that was packaged with Zone of Enders. Man, blew my mind. I think I was in 10th grade when it game out. Just about 10 years ago now. I'll always love MGS, but two just sticks in there. I think I almost collected all those f***ing dogtags from all the difficulties.
