AVerMedia Game Capture HD Video Review - ZGR

Zeitgeist Game Review says:
“Well the slow month of January is finally about to pass us and we can start to see some actual new video games being released quickly with a few big-name titles like Final Fantasy XII-2 and Soul Calibur V. Until then I’ve got one more hardware review for you to hold you over. AVerMedia contacted me last month and told me about their new Game Capture HD device stating that I could record game footage without the use of a PC. Being that I currently use a Hauppauge HD PVR that DOES require a computer connection, I was immediately interested, so the company shipped me out a unit to review for you”

Oh gotcha. Yup, that's going to turn off some people from purchasing it.

ZTGD | Game Capture HD II (Hardware) Review

Ken McKown writes: When Avermedia sent over the Game Capture HD II I was expecting yet another piece of hardware that captures game clips, offers commentary and has one or two quirks that simply annoy me. Much to my surprise, this device actually brings something new and interesting to the table. This is the first capture device that does not require a PC to function, making it much more appealing to those without hefty hardware who want to become a YouTube sensation.

ExtremeCap U3 Review | SelectButton

SelectButton: "The ExtremeCap U3 can be found on Amazon for the same price as its pocket-sized brother, Live Gamer Portable, and still cheaper than the internal Live Gamer HD. Having USB 3.0 should be a huge factor when determining what product to purchase. If the answer is yes, the ExtremeCap U3 should be the only product on your list, with incredible visual quality and the only way to record 1080p at 60fps videos with a consumer level device. The lack of video pass-through does hurt the product if your PC doesn’t have USB 3.0 due to the lack of video pass-through and Mac users are simply out of luck once again."

Sorry but how old is this review? It states that this device can only capture video @ 30Mbps if recording 1080p/60fps.....but I bought this device in the last week of January and when I installed the latest drivers/software, it allowed me to capture video @ 60Mbps when 1080p/60fps

Review is based on the current ones listed on their site. RECentral maxes out on 30Mbps on 1080p/60fps on the setup.

It is possible they didn't update correctly (I will re-test and update accordingly). This is a good reason why ALL updated drivers should have release notes. Or they could just bring back the forum...

I see, my RECentral is version 1.3.0.80 and as you can see below I can capture 60mbps/1080p/60fps

Rajman, do you mind me asking roughly what computer setup you use to manage your high bitrate videos?

rajman3724d ago

What you mean setup? if you're asking what kind of PC I have, its the following:
- intel Core i7 3770K (3.5ghz) overclocked to 4.4ghz
- EVGA - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti PCI-E Graphics Card - 2 GB
- ASUS P8Z77-V LX NEW Z77 Chipset Motherboard
- Patriot Viper Xtreme 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866Mhz
- 2TB SATA3 HDD
- OCZ ZS Series 750W 80+ Bronze PSU
- Thermaltake Contac 21 CPU Cooler

That was pretty much exactly what I wanted to know. Thanks for the info and a helpful bubble to you.

(I'm looking into buying a new laptop and I'm not sure if I should skimp on the laptop and build a new desktop, etc. Basically, I'm shopping around and gathering information about different setups.)

I created an account just to reply to your comment -
I have a Mid-2012 13-inch MacBook Pro with the dual core 2.9ghz i7 processor, 16gb RAM (8 was fine too), and Intel HD 4000 Graphics. I also have both Mac OS and Windows 7 installed (via Bootcamp) and I can use the ExtremeCap U3 perfectly fine using the recentral software supplied from Avermedia (recording 1080p/60fps @60mbps).

So there's my specs for reference if you plan on recording using Avermedia's software - if you plan on recording raw footage though (.avi), you will need a beefier computer to record full 1080p footage (though in my case I THINK all I need is dedicated graphics and I've seen people rig their own external graphics for macbooks around the internet which I may end up trying in the future unless I buy a desktop - I was also using premiere pro to try to record raw footage and I believe premiere pro isn't well optimized for laptops anyways, reason I say that is because using Final Cut Pro has been faster in my opinion, especially when rendering and exporting)

So last night I ended I completely uninstalled everything AverMedia and re-installed it from the 1/21 file they posted and it finally worked.

Tested it and was able to select up to 60Mbps just like the Live Gamer HD and Live Gamer Portable.

If you didn't comment, I wouldn't have known it wasn't installed correctly. Obviously, the review is updated to reflect.

Thanks!
